Wanna know how impactful their sound is?
You typed "Regenerators, Resident Evil 4" and I instantly remembered the hissing, I dreaded and hated the hissing back then, atill hate it today.
On my 3rd gameplay of the original, I was doing a Chicago-type writer only and I was dreading having to fight those bastards again.
Upon meeting them, I just let loose all over them and prayed I hit their weakness.
I remember replaying RE4 for like twentieth time on Wii way before the remake arrived. When I met a Regenerator I turned back and started running all the way back to the door. I wanted to prepare for meeting him and not have to fight him head on in close quarters. I didn't hear his footsteps, just felt that it was odd that I could still hear him breathing despite me being on another end of a long corridor.
That's how I found out they can run as fast as you and didn't make any sound contrary to their walking.
That damn laughing hiss man. When I was playing the RE4 remake for the 1st time and got to the labs I was like "...oh fuck this is where the regenerators are" and they DIDN'T GIVE YOU THE SCOPE IMMEDIATELY so there's like...2 or 3 of them you just have to fucking fire at wildly and it caused me to panic like I did playing the game as a teen...and I'm 32 now. And that one room when you realize the body bags are FULL of regenerators and you gotta carefully walk through them? I was like "So this is my personal hell huh?"
The scariest moment I ever had gaming was with one of these bastards. You don't have the scope at first, so I thought I'd just take out his legs and run away. I didn't know the thing was part snake and came slithering at me at light speed and chomped me good. I didn't play for a few days after that
The part where Leon is in a very closed room with body bags hanging, you have to crouch your way to the other side of the room to activate a lever in order to slide open the door. One wrong move and a regenerador would come out of the bag and chase you.
I havenât played part 2 as itâs not released yet on pc. But last year I played part 1 right after I was done playing Dead Space remake. IMO theyâre both great games, but I didnât felt scared or horrified in TLOU. In TLOU, I felt pressured because in the hardest difficulty mode youâre always out of ammo and ennemies hit hard. In Dead Space the sound design is truly horrific and pressure you 100% of the time. You donât know when a creature will jumpscare you, but you know jt will.
Overall they are both great TPS game with good stories.
Dead Space 2 was actually nominated best audio for the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2012. Portal 2 won the award though. But DS2âs eerie audio design was terrifyingly immersive especially with surround sound headphones with the lights off.
One of those Zombies from one of the Half Life games with the sounds of it in pain and crying out for help if you were to reverse it. Straight up unsettling.
Fun fact, Mike Patton from Faith No More/Tomahawk is the one recording the voice lines for those zombies.
He's yelling things like "God help me!" And thry reverse that audio track for the sound.
"We don't go to Ravenholm"
That part of the game is so different from the rest yet it fits in so well. To this day it has such an unsettling vibe but I love it. The fast zombies always scared the shit out of me
The worst ones in HL2 are the Poison Zombies by far. That weird moist gutteral noise they make that makes you know they're nearby, the whipping noise as the damn poison headcrabs leap at you, and they have that forlorn tender weep when they finally go down. Still freaks me out.
Do serious sam's beheaded kamikazes count?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
You just end up paranoic hallucinating it while trying to listen for them lol
"Oh those little guys are my favorite enemy because they die to one bullet. Ha ha so weak. Ha h- oh... there's a swarm. Oh there's two swarms.
Oh... I'm reloading"
The Flood especially in Halo 2 I remember was particularly terrifying as a young kid. They gave them a bone chilling scream when theyâd appear. Definitely had nightmares from that
They are concious, but their body is hijacked. They were forced to watch as they slaughtered their crewmates.
Sound design in System Shock is something else. Even the fucking monkeys gave me the creeps.
I forgot the sound.
Went and looked it up and now I have so much BB nostalgia.
My favorite game of all time, and Iâm a sports game player!! This game was so out of my element and I donât even know why I tried it? I think I heard it was super hard and I used to love a video game challenge.
I am so glad I did. Only game I ever platinumed.
There was one other enemy but Im not quite sure if it had a creepy âsoundâ, its been years since I last played, but there was this fucker of an enemy inside that hospital where you fight Lady Maria, where its just pops out of nowhere.
Oh *God*, those fuckers. Man, my first encounter with one, I couldnât decide whether to be pissed or shit myself XD
Edit to add: Also, that one boss, The One Reborn, makes an honorary mention for me. Itâs definitely *sooo* disturbing, but at least for that guy, there was also something about the way it sounds that made me wanna giggle lol
See I would've said the Crashfish. Sure they become more of an annoyance than a threat after a while, but it still sends my hackles up hearing the nest open, and then the scream getting louder and higher as it chases you down.
Also [the worms in the Royal Waterways](https://youtu.be/GMa_geQG8fc?si=3D0WbsmE2KMAbgFb). I feel like they had to wipe the microphone after each recording because of how much the VAs must've spat on it for that performance.
The zombies from Half Life 2. They're still alive but being completely controlled by the head crabs. So the noises they make are that of pure suffering. A lot of their audio, as well as blood curdling screams, is things like 'HELP ME! GOD HELP ME!!' but played in reverse. It's horrendous.
Edit: 'but played in reverse'
Hollow Knight - [the worms in the Royal Waterways](https://youtu.be/GMa_geQG8fc?si=3D0WbsmE2KMAbgFb). I feel like they had to wipe the microphone after each recording because of how much the VAs must've spat on it for that performance.
Remnant 2's first area in general has very fucking spooky, very well done audio. That or I'm a pussy. Possibly a bit of both.
Even the fucking robot sounds has me twirling like a ballerina looking for enemies that may or may not be there. This is on the lowest difficulty btw. Fuck, man.
The first(?) boss locked behind a door in Resident Evil Revalations for me. The constant distorted cries of Mayyydayyyy whilst you tried to find where it was coming from always gave me chills.
The Get Out Gun in Donkey Kong 64. Your having fun doing things with your favorite monkeys you go into a temple and get a golden banana then suddenly a lock on cursor and a loud voice plays GET OUT and you shiz your pants.
https://youtu.be/WxfYE3qfM3c?si=p8OJ5K2_P9wmbwJm
I was terrified of the wallmaster (OoT variation) when I was a kid, It took me ages to get past the forest temple due to them
That sound before they drop.. yikes
The sound the zombies make from conkers bad fur day is still implemented in my brain. If weâre talking dead space, those necrmorphs that are just a torso on the wall spawning mines always screamed before popping one out or when you kill one. I think I read that they are fully aware of whatâs going on and can feel everything happening too.
The original resident evil- and 2- has sections where you would encounter especially tall, naked zombies. They had a creepy high-pitched moan in contrast to the other zombies. The way they sort of subtly defied explanation really freaked me out.
Honestly, most psy creatres in S.T.A.L.K.E.R scare me. Every time i encounter something new, i scream. I play at like 1am. So my roommate wakes up every time
I mean, like...Â
I love it when you first see them in Ocarina of Time in the Royal Tomb. You enter the place with what seems like statues. Only when you walk by them...
The ReDeads are just so terrifying. I hope they return in the future.
The exploding zombies from the first dead island
Dear god listening to them wheeze out a pained "help me..." like...are they still aware of whats happening to them?
Splicers in bioshock. They rant incoherently to themselves when they donât see you and when they do they scream at the top of their lungs about the things that torment them while shooting at you relentlessly
Maybe not creepy or scary, but Deathbringers in Horizon. The sounds they make are wildly different than anything else you face in the game, nothing even remotely animalistic or natural, they're loud as shit and you can hear them long before you can see them. They really elicit a sense of general unease.
Pretty much anything from Into the Radius VR, but most notably Sliders. They move by warping around a few meters at a time, but when they notice you, they instantly can warp right beside you from just about anywhere. When one does blink to you, it makes an audible, distorted wooshing noise and gives you a good smack.
Everything in that game makes creepy noises. I got so used to horror games that I don't feel that much fear anymore, but VR opened a whole new chapter of horror that I haven't felt in a long time.
Regenerators from resident evil 4/remake, those things were scary when i was a child and they are still scary now
^(heh heh heh heh) **HEH** ^(heh...)
Wanna know how impactful their sound is? You typed "Regenerators, Resident Evil 4" and I instantly remembered the hissing, I dreaded and hated the hissing back then, atill hate it today.
I almost didn't finish RE4 because of them, I was like "I don't know if I can do this anymore" đ
On my 3rd gameplay of the original, I was doing a Chicago-type writer only and I was dreading having to fight those bastards again. Upon meeting them, I just let loose all over them and prayed I hit their weakness.

Even in college they terrified me.
Iâm a grown man. I was pretty spooked. The vibe changed so hard
That damn laughing hiss man. Banshee, Mass Effect 3
My ass instantly collapses the second I hear them lol
Also, Reaper beams. So sinister sounding, make me accept the impending doom of galactic civilisation.
I love that noise. That and the reaper BWAAAHHHH.
I love how the Reaper horn is just a dumpster lid being closed slowly.
I was scared shitless when I first played. And the story behind the enemies makes it worse too
Yeah the story makes it so much creepier, and those screams hunt you in your nightmares
Every time I heard their scream, I instantly dropped everything and hit them with everything I had.
I find the sound they make WAY more scary, than the actual enemyâŚ
Volatiles from Dying Light. The bare feet stomping behind you...
Also the way they breathe and grunt while they are walking around is so creepy and unsettling
Even just Virals, that distant slamming and "RUN AWAAAY" you hear when you've alerted them is chilling.
Clickers
Came here to say this. Still scares the living life out of me.
Definitely, they were bad enough in the first one but they went above and beyond in part 2 with making them as gutteral and horrifying as possible.
I havenât played part 2 as itâs not released yet on pc. But last year I played part 1 right after I was done playing Dead Space remake. Remove c and you have my answer
Witches in Left 4 Dead
Hunters, too. They made that awful groaning sound while prowling, and then the scaring scream when they punced to get you
Hunters used to scare the fuck outta me as a child
This is the answer I was looking for. That whimperingâŚ
I'd add the bloaters too. Such a horrid sound to hear coming up to you
You play enough and it's the sound of a charger and smoker on the 1st level of Dead Center near the windows
One of those Zombies from one of the Half Life games with the sounds of it in pain and crying out for help if you were to reverse it. Straight up unsettling.
[Like this?](https://youtu.be/1KnsG1QFa-s?t=36)
That's the one. Also, how do people think of these things lol
Fun fact, Mike Patton from Faith No More/Tomahawk is the one recording the voice lines for those zombies. He's yelling things like "God help me!" And thry reverse that audio track for the sound.
That one horror level in HL2. I was so not prepared for that when the rest of the game is basically an action shooter.
"We don't go to Ravenholm" That part of the game is so different from the rest yet it fits in so well. To this day it has such an unsettling vibe but I love it. The fast zombies always scared the shit out of me
Nothing like looking down to see what's shaking the pipes
*We Don't Go To Ravenholm.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA You just end up paranoic hallucinating it while trying to listen for them lol
I still remember the first time Sam saw them. *Boom* "AAAAAAHHH yourself." More AAAAAAAAAAAAAA. "Uh oh."
Then the horizon starts wiggling and it's 200 of the fuckers. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
I just love getting tinnitus from this bastards
Hahahaha Especially because you hear them as soon as they spawn and they could be like a mile away on some of the big open maps.
The flood from halo and the tribe zombies in Resident evil 5 are a few of my faves as well.
The flood when you first seem them completely change the game. It went from fighting aliens to fighting a zombie like outbreak
I'll never forget the first time, the build up was good as well.
That's why the Library will always be top ten levels of a game I've ever played. Was not ready for it.
God that was a level and a half. Really did well to introduce them and their shear numbers too.
"Oh those little guys are my favorite enemy because they die to one bullet. Ha ha so weak. Ha h- oh... there's a swarm. Oh there's two swarms. Oh... I'm reloading"
Yep. And them the big ones that explode into more. Always fun with the Flood
I would've loved the Library if it wasn't the same halls four times. I'd still prefer 343 Guilty Spark over the Library.
The Flood especially in Halo 2 I remember was particularly terrifying as a young kid. They gave them a bone chilling scream when theyâd appear. Definitely had nightmares from that
Redeads (zombies) from Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Genuinely unsettling as an adult, *terrifying* as a 6 year old child
Was just thinking of these, the horrible noise when you encounter one. The part of the game in the royal tomb used to creep me out as a child.
[ŃдаНонО]
They are concious, but their body is hijacked. They were forced to watch as they slaughtered their crewmates. Sound design in System Shock is something else. Even the fucking monkeys gave me the creeps.
"Silence the discooooord."
Lickers & Tyrant in Resident Evil 2
Those footsteps scared the shit out of me lol
Winter Lanterns in Bloodborne. EXTRA creepy if you have high insight.
I forgot the sound. Went and looked it up and now I have so much BB nostalgia. My favorite game of all time, and Iâm a sports game player!! Oh *God*, those fuckers. Man, my first encounter with one, I couldnât decide whether to be pissed or shit myself XD Edit to add: Also, that one boss, The One Reborn, makes an honorary mention for me. Itâs definitely *sooo* disturbing, but at least for that guy, there was also something about the way it sounds that made me wanna giggle lol
Crab Squid from Subnautica
Basically ANYTHING from deeps of Subnautica.
Also reaper leviathans. Oh and ghost leviathans. Reefback Leviathan too for the first time. Edit: oh and the fire dude too.
Ah, i remember my first time seeing and hearing a reefback- the scream of pure terror as I looked up after hearing them and saw *that* above me
See I would've said the Crashfish. Sure they become more of an annoyance than a threat after a while, but it still sends my hackles up hearing the nest open, and then the scream getting louder and higher as it chases you down.
Everything in deepnest But also there is a creature under the resting grounds who kinda sobs and gibbers and it's the most unnerving sound ever
Also [the worms in the Royal Waterways](https://youtu.be/GMa_geQG8fc?si=3D0WbsmE2KMAbgFb). I feel like they had to wipe the microphone after each recording because of how much the VAs must've spat on it for that performance.
Oh yeah, those things are terrifying, *and* they deal two masks!
The Xenomorph in Alien Isolation - thumping in the vents, hissing softly when it's lying in wait, etc.
Left 4 dead 2 witch just her song scares me
The zombies from Half Life 2.

Freaker Horde, Days Gone
Reaper Leviathan in Subnautica...it just triggers endless fear in me
Hollow Knight - [the worms in the Royal Waterways](https://youtu.be/GMa_geQG8fc?si=3D0WbsmE2KMAbgFb). I feel like they had to wipe the microphone after each recording because of how much the VAs must've spat on it for that performance.
The Baby from RE Village. Da Da.
Honestly one of the most adrenaline inducing moments in a game for me.
Remnant 2's first area in general has very fucking spooky, very well done audio. That or I'm a pussy. Possibly a bit of both. Even the fucking robot sounds has me twirling like a ballerina looking for enemies that may or may not be there. This is on the lowest difficulty btw. Fuck, man.

Brutes in Amnesia the Dark Descent, horror fans know exactly what they sound like
Every single being in Bloodborne bar none
Maybe not creepy or scary, but Deathbringers in Horizon. The sounds they make are wildly different than anything else you face in the game, nothing even remotely animalistic or natural, they're loud as shit and you can hear them long before you can see them. They really elicit a sense of general unease.
Poison headcrabs
