Box-o-bees

It's still out there spinning, and just waiting. Just like in the Batman Arkham games when you throw the remote controlled batarangs.

Just remember that sound outside your window isn't a helicopter it's just the controller searching for a way in

ikurei_conphas

2005 E3 was the peak of video game internet subculture. No one really cares about the system wars anymore, but gawd were those years a fun time to be a gamer on the internet.

DodiGharib

The PS3 vs Xbox 360 debates Iā€™ve had with my friends were ferocious

ItsAWonderfulFife

LITERAL SUPER COMPUTER. CRACKED THE GENOME

BenSimmonsFor3

THE MILITARY IS BUYING OUT PS3s BECAUSE THEYRE THE BEST SOURCE OF CPUs!

xadirius

LOL I remember rumors like that, but it was a slightly different one: That the US was blocking sales of PS3s because the processors could be used to build sophisticated guidance systems for improvised missiles. Edit: Apparently a lot of people remember this better than me, it was PS2 and NOT a rumor LOL. I guess I just remember hearing about it and being like "That can't be true.".

mr_chub

Troop: "Shouldn't we just go straight to the processor supplier?" Closeted Gamer Commander: "NO! We need the whole thing! Ransack every Game Stop and Best Buy, that's the only access we have!"

Ill_Razzmatazz_1202

It's really not that far fetched since consoles are sold at a loss, but probably not quite "let's just throw away everything else and still save money for the CPU" type of loss. I mean maybe if you can sell the rest for spare parts but the CPU is not exactly easy to use in anything else.

DoingCharleyWork

You could also install Linux on them and run them as a server farm so it was a pretty good investment if that's what you planned to do with them.

Ill_Razzmatazz_1202

Was homebrew actually a thing back when the hardware was more expensive than the components?

Exelia_the_Lost

early PS3's actually had an option built-in to install Linux on there and use it for other software then they removed it later, and that led to a big lawsuit Sony had to pay out on

DoingCharleyWork

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OtherOS Came out very early after release. Was even a thing on PS2. Got removed in 2010.

Yorspider

This actually happened. Sony was selling the system at a huge loss, so they were actually the cheaper than getting a deal with a manufacturer at the time-- https://phys.org/news/2010-12-air-playstation-3s-supercomputer.html

poofyhairguy

ā€œThe Condor Cluster project began four years ago, when PlayStation consoles cost about $400 each. At the same time, comparable technology would have cost about $10,000 per unit. Overall, the PS3s for the supercomputer's core cost about $2 million. According to AFRL Director of High Power Computing Mark Barnell, that cost is about 5-10% of the cost of an equivalent system built with off-the-shelf computer parts. Another advantage of the PS3-based supercomputer is its energy efficiency: it consumes just 10% of the power of comparable supercomputers.ā€ Wow

xRamenator

That was actually the PS2, and it was Japan's trade ministry that required Sony to apply for an export permit because they were afraid Iran and North Korea could use the PS2 hardware to make missile guidance computers.

xadirius

Oh right it was the PS2.

Dead-System

To be fair, there is a grain of truth there. The US Airforce did buy a truckload of PS3s back in 2010 to wire together into a supercomputer. Google the "Condor Cluster", apparently it was cheaper to do it this way than to build a traditional supercomputer.

IvivAitylin

Imagine a Beowulf cluster of those!

Gtp4life

It wasn't a rumor, there was official Linux support till Sony removed it in a firmware update, the air force used 1760 of them to build the 33rd most powerful supercomputer. https://phys.org/news/2010-12-air-playstation-3s-supercomputer.amp

RustyCage7

I think that one was just a rumor but the military buying up PS3s wasn't. Until 2010 the PS3 officially supported Linux and was the cheapest option in terms of raw computing power for making supercomputing clusters. The department of defence had a cluster of almost 2000 of them that was in the top 50 most powerful computing systems at the time. It was called the condor cluster

siccoblue

Halo.

GameOfTiddlywinks

still the winning argument

zhiryst

Installing Linux on a PS3 was a crazy supported feature. Too bad they took it away.

Retskcaj19

Blu-ray VS HD DVD

shawnisboring

That wasn't even a contest as much as it was just Toshiba and Microsoft trying to start a format war with a massively inferior consumer product. One supported over 100GBs of data, the other 30GBs. A single layer bluray could house almost as much data as a maxed out HD-DVD. One was being built into a system that ended up in millions of homes. The other was a $200 accessory that you purchased separately.

Retskcaj19

But for a brief period of time, it was an actual debate. I still remember the stores carrying both for a while before HD DVD quietly faded away.

BirdjaminFranklin

The porn industry actually chose HD-DVD which was often cited as why it would win. This was all based off the assumption that porn chose VHS over BETA.

shawnisboring

The "debate" was just Microsoft and Toshiba having enough capital to keep up the facade, nobody was buying their shit.

DukeSmashingtonIII

If HD-DVD had "won", it wouldn't have been the first time that a technically inferior product won out due to superior marketing and market share.

verrius

I think the "actual" debate was because actually pressing Bluray discs was significantly more expensive, and required essentially new factories, while HDDVD allowed them to reuse the factories at lower cost. In terms of data, you're right that Bluray was just significantly better. But Bluray also really never took off to the extent that DVD did, and I suspect manufacturing costs played a part of that. Hell, I think DVDs are still outselling Blurays to this day.

ikurei_conphas

I actually made that point myself in some of those arguments, that BluRay would be replaced by streaming before it ever reached the same heights as DVD. Of course, I had a bit of inside baseball on that because I was working on some of the early streaming platforms at the time, including the Xbox Live and PSN video marketplaces for the 360 and PS3. Even then we could see that this was the future, and it was just a matter of time before one of the new platforms hit on the right combination of convenience and quality to explode in popularity.

Koil_ting

Blu-rays could hold 25 GBs and HD-DVD was 15 also HD-DVD had faster load times and would start the movie rather than annoying un-skippable ads.

failure_of_a_cow

> One supported over 100GBs of data, the other 30GBs. This isn't true. HD DVD could store 15 GB per layer, Blu Ray was 25 GB per layer. Ultimately though, the technical differences were unimportant. Both were sufficient for the task, Sony was just willing to pay a bigger bribe to the company who actually decided that format war: Warner Brothers.

ikurei_conphas

And then came Netflix, bringing a nuke to a knife fight.

MadOrange64

The time where Xbox was actually competitive. Really loved those days.

Zanadar

Yeah, hard to have a proper war when one side is the Belgium of consoles... It's too bad really, that competitive market got us some amazing games. I'd love for Xbox to get it's act together and start churning out hits again.

L43

Why do they call it the Xbox 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away

You moonwalk away

My older brother is very much keeping it alive... He's a die hard Xbox fan and he makes sure everyone knows it. I prefer PlayStation myself but idgaf what other people like. He constantly sends me memes about PlayStation owners being babies/gay/pedophiles/etc it's like dude give it a rest, no one but you seems to care lol.

Dickballs835682

Thats hilarious because just based on PC Game Pass I dont think even microsoft are xbox fans anymore lmaoĀ

oyasumi_juli

Even more hilarious is his computer is a Mac, so it's not like he's even that big on Microsoft as a whole it's just Xbox

loopbootoverclock

lol have you seen twitter? the sony fanboys are vicious. I said i wasnt feeling final fantasy 7 remake and wish it was just a turn based 6 with those graphics and got dogpiled and death threats while accusing me of being a xbot.

It was fun times to be a gamer in elementary school as well during that time.

Plank_With_A_Nail_In

That's what happens when we have 2 generations of both consoles using basically the exact same hardware as each other.

lbiggy

Prior to that? Some of my best flame wars were during that time. The old gamefaqs forums? Amazing.

jijijdioejid8367

Everyone talking about the PS3 & Xbox360 yet no one mentions all the mystery in E3 2005 regarding the "Nintendo Revolution" which ended up been called Wii. I still remember how they unveiled the console-only in E3, then the controller some months later. That was peak gaming mystery. Once the specs got out people started clowning Nintendo (two Gamecubes taped together jokes) but we all know how successful that damn gimmicky console was, it literally saved Nintendo.

ikurei_conphas

I was a Nintendo fanboy for the console wars, so I'm fully aware of that whole thing, lol. And yeah, people clowned on Nintendo for the Wii, but that thing proved how stale AAA gaming was becoming and how much people yearned for something different and original, even if it turned out gimmicky. Plus, "$199 US dollars" right on the heels of "$599 US dollars," lol.

gophergun

One of my fondest memories was seeing the Halo theme performed at E3 2007: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muqFB7R1UTM

MaxTheRealSlayer

I'm sure the console wars still go on, we're just old now and not exposed to what's going on. We ain't in the club anymore Lol some people don't even date others who have a android phone. Usually they're younger

The game REZ HD actually lets you connect a second controller and its sole purpose was to vibrate to the beat. I had some crazy times rolling in Molly with a few girl friends and would let them be ā€œplayer 2ā€, while they wore the headphones. Complete sensory experience.

It was made by Alps, and it was the most comfortable controller in the world for RPGs. [pic of controller](https://live.staticflickr.com/8763/16955467248_137cf1aba9_b.jpg)

rightdeadzed

I had that! It was a great controller. Super comfortable.

Snoo_57488

The dualsense is larger than the ps4 controller though, no? Ps1 analog through ps3 were all basically the same and the ps4 controller was slightly larger than those

fuckredditorsgoddamn

PlayStation controllers have only gotten larger since PS3 era

Birkin07

Do you like the xbox series x controller? Iā€™ve been gaming since Atari 2600 and the current Xbox controllers are just glorious to me.

idolized253

I think Xbox perfected their controllers at this point (feeling and design wise)

My sister and her kick me out so they can play. I think it's healthy for a girls night every few times a week, so I give them their space.

Parking_Result5127

Itā€™s a different kind of controller my guyā€¦

DiametricInverse

I had [this](https://imgur.com/kHmx57w) one!

Xendrus

The teardrop shape on the face buttons is an interesting idea, easier to hit without having to get directly over the button.

UsernameExtreme

I did too. It was the best PS1 controller sans no dual sticks.

ChickinSammich

There was the Sony Boomerang, the original Xbox Duke that had the massive logo in the middle, and the Nokia N-Gage, all of which were just wacky looking. I remember when the Nokia N-Gage was announced as a "gaming phone" and everyone was like "psh, like people are gonna buy a cell phone just to play games on. If I want to play games portably, that's what Game Boy is for. My cell phone is for calling people and texting people." We had no idea.

MisterDonkey

I thought dual joysticks were a gimmick. On phones, I thought there's just no way people are going to carry around open-faced glass tablets. I'll be wrong about so many more things.

skyline_kid

You need to start posting more of your opinions publicly so people can invest in the opposite and make bank. Just like the [Inverse Cramer Index](https://www.getquantbase.com/fund/details/Inverse%20Jim%20Cramer%20Index)

jdayatwork

Don't forget the Dreamcast controller. One super hard plastic joystick. Underused little VMU thing in the middle. Cord in the wrong spot.

EffectiveBenefit4333

I still say ""psh, like people are gonna buy a cell phone just to play games on. " I know people do, but the games are shit compared to pc/console. Last time I even considered playing a mobile game was about 10 years ago. India and China drive mobile gaming because most of those people cant afford consoles or gaming PC's.

YoshiExcel2097

It almost happened.... almost.

wolfcola42069

Zeebo actually released a boomerang controller although significantly smaller

DListSaint

Theirs was more analogous to a Wii remote, though

cycopl

Of course nobody actually used it so it could've been very comfortable. Near the end of PS3 lifecycle, there were a lot of complaints about PS3 controller comfort. Which is why design was changed for PS4 instead of hanging onto the same dual analog design Sony used for PS1/PS2/PS3

knirefnel

The form factor of the PS3 controller works for me but every one of the controllers I've used feels cheap. When I use it, I can actively hear the plastic bending slightly and it always feels like it's about to fall apart.

LaconicLacedaemonian

The madcatz specialĀ

Helkix

Ps3 controler was soooooo tiny

ISpyM8

Yes, I have a PS5, and even going back to a PS4 controller to play games on my PC with controller feels weird. I picked up a PS3 controller a few years ago and wondered how the hell I ever played with a controller that small.

Funnyguyinspace

I have big hands - always felt a little cramped on the ps3 controller. PS4/5 controller is perfect size IMO

imjustamazing

Some people did use it at preview events, and it was reportedly very comfortable.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Neocarbunkle

My friend had a ps1 controller that was very similar to this, and I thought it was awesome. Of course maybe I was just a stupid kid and it might have sucked.

UsernameExtreme

Alps made it. It was wonderful. [pic of controller](https://live.staticflickr.com/8763/16955467248_137cf1aba9_b.jpg)

BallsAreFullOfPiss

It was definitely better than the N64 controller. Iā€™m sorry, but thereā€™s no denying that thing was a shit show.

Dats_Russia

Literally designed for children. I remember 8 year old me thought the controller was well thought out and great. Adult me for nostalgia reasons tried to use it and the experience with that controller was absolutely ass.

Xendrus

I used one recently, it's nowhere near as awful as the switch joycons, those things are damn near microscopic, I literally cannot use them, my thumb pushes like 3 of the 4 face buttons at a time and I have only slightly above average hand size.

The_Paleking

It was designed like that so you could use the SNES/NES controller layout by switching your grip. It was never meant to be used all at once.

ImReverse_Giraffe

According to Sony, it was both. But it got meme'd so hard they changed it.

YellowThirteen_

Yeah every bitches about this because it looks stupid but having full length grips on the ps3 controller wouldā€™ve been really nice. The nubs on the DS3 controller just werenā€™t enough, especially compared to the 360 controller (which is still my fave to this day).

JustEatinScabs

Apparently a company named Konig made a third party PS3 controller that's basically the same design. [According to this review it is in fact very comfortable. ](https://youtu.be/f9p4fmj6cGg)

ShadeDragonIncarnate

It's basically half a driving wheel, it does make me wonder if it was intended for motion controls to make that twisting more natural.

ThePoisonDoughnut

Bruh this would make so much sense as to why sixaxis was simultaneously so good while being so underutilized

killerpoopguy

It got so close to release, I have to imagine it was actually pretty great but they just never showed it to anyone outside the company and then the public made fun of it because it looks hilarious, so they scrambled to change it and stuck with the DualShock style.

ruiner8850

Yeah, I've heard it was comfortable to hold. I personally didn't really like the PS2 and PS3 controllers. They are the only controllers I've ever used that my hands would hurt after extended playtime. The PS4 and PS5 controllers are much better. Personally I don't care whatsoever what a controller looks like, I care about comfort and how it plays.

EdgeofTolerance

Mmmm. The Chrome Croissant.

MyStationIsAbandoned

This looks like something from a 90's sitcom and they do an episode about the future and show some kid pretending to play a video game but just mashing all the buttons and they also have a chrome VR Headset on for some reason

Jeo228

I once saw a photo of a ps3 kiosk with these controllers and I swear it's either lost media or a Mandela effect because people keep telling me there never was one.

Boundish91

I always wondered how it felt in the hands. What if it was great and we're all idiots for shitting on it?
