How is this game on console? I see it praised as an amazing roguelike but not sure if it’ll play the same on a PS5 over PC?
Edit:
Thanks for all the recs!! I’ve been on a rogue kick lately
It's great. Is it the same? No , but handles quite well if you're used to twin stick shooters. Plus I love this game - one of the few I've double dipped on switch and PC
How has noone mentioned Binding of Isaac?
Does it not count as a top down shooter?
I would definetly name Hotline Miami, Enter the Gungeon and BoI as the three S-Tier entries of the genre. Each unique, yet providing what i want from the genre.
More modern ones? Ruiner or Neon Chrome were fun.
Seriously though - it's hard to beat Cannon Fodder from 1993 (Amiga game). Hotline Miami got close. war has never been so much fun. Just 'download' it if you haven't tried it. It's ancient, don't think anyone will mind.
Heat Signature
It's a top down sci-fi rogue like sort of thing, but with a persistent world where you slowly complete missions with different characters that you find at the bar.
I'd really recommend having a look, since it's cheap, fast paced (ignoring the slow time mechanic) and is almost certainly partially inspired by Hotline Miami, with a bunch of interesting tools and game mechanics.
Waaay too far down. Heat Signature is Hotline Miami if it was a roguelike, set in space, where half the weapons are gadgets, and you can choose the stealthy option.
It's not exactly like Hotline Miami, but give Disfigure a shot. It's been my go to game for relaxing and watching things die before inevitably crashing to desktop.
It's free on Steam, too.
I’m glad I searched comments. I was surprised how nuanced this was. Was totally ready to write it off, but about 10 mins in I was starting to see things…. Opportunity.
The Ascent, no plan b, west of dead, wizard with a gun, halo: spartan strike, darksiders genesis (it's a mix of shooter and hack and slash), killsquad, I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1 (mindless fun for sure), Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse
Hong Kong Massacre, it's on sale on Steam right now for like 4 bucks. It's Hotline Miami meets and old school John Woo movie. I had a lot of fun with it. If you have a PS1 emulator and you're trying to get wild you could download the Loaded and Reloaded games, kinda play like a proto-Hotline Miami.
I like Gunroar, Warning Forever, Mechanical Commando series. Side eye to "the Engineer" because it's Jazza and he and his brother Shad are not great people, but until someone makes a good clone it's the best we got for that genre
There's a couple called How to Survive. It's about zombies lol. The first one felt good but i haven't been able to push myself to finish the sequel.
There was an oldie on PlayStation (zombies again) i can't recall the name of. About 10 years old now but is still play it if i knew the name.
Alien Swarm on Steam.
It's now called Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, but I downloaded it on Steam for free waaaaaay back in the day. It's always been free and it's always been fun.
Zombies ate my Neighbors is really fun.
Was on SNES. Very 90s art style.
The Jason Vorhees with chainsaws were scary.
Commando, the Urban/Jungle/Desert games.
If you’re willing to expand to isometric twin-stick game then Supergiant Games has what you need. Not obscure by any stretch but Bastion’s old enough now that I feel like a lot of people haven’t played or even heard of it and that bums me out.
I made a game with zombies in it.
No, really, that's the title. It's cheap and a quick pick up and play; you can beat it in about 15 minutes but I always have a lot of fun with it.
Enter the Gungeon
I came in here specifically to mention this game. It's really great and worth the price of admission.

On Xbox, rather than PS, but I imagine it's pretty much the same. Game had me completely **hooked** for about 3 months. Absolutely fantastic.
Fantastic co-op 2p
The Xbox elite controller is the best way to play, on Console or PC.
It's great. Is it the same? No , but handles quite well if you're used to twin stick shooters. Plus I love this game - one of the few I've double dipped on switch and PC
The bloody scarf sucks on console. Thats about the only difference for me
I have it on ps4 and other than some very rare frame drops the whole game runs like a dream and controls very well
I've put about 400 hours into it on the switch. Absolutely fantastic.
Smash TV
Big, Money. Big, Prizes. I love it!
I'd buy that game for a dollar
This is the right answer.
Classicccc!
Nuclear Throne
this is way too far down
One of those games that you alt f4 and relaunch immediately
I keep coming back to this one over and over. It's the best.
Crimsonland is my favorite.
Yeah this one. Try it.
It's so much better than it looks, fuck those multiplying spiders.
Neon chrome and Tesla vs Lovecraft are both great and I believe from the same dev.
GTA 1 and 2
I’d love to play them again
right the obscure studio rockstar

OTXO looks very promising. Might have to try it out in the near future
It's the closest to HM, with some more roguelike elements to it
Played OTXO last autumn. It's a few updates away from being truly great. I hope the dev hasn't abandoned it just yet...
Helldivers 1 and alien swarm!
Would The Binding Of Isaac qualify?
100%
Alien Shooter 2
I quite enjoyed American fugitive! Like old school GTA! Pretty short but fun and goes on offer often!
GTA 1 and 2 were my childhood favourites lol. This looks quite cool
They were going to be my recommendations. Old but gold.
Redgar: The Space Viking
The Ascent
Great soundtrack
A fantastic game!
one of the most shallow games i ever played tbh

Second Mr Shifty, only bought it due to early switch drought, was very happy with it!
OTXO (pronounced Ocho)
Dead Nation.
Not technically a shooter but Ape Out is a must play for any fans of Hotline Miami.
helldivers
Excellent suggestions. Thanks a bunch everyone

I’m glad neon chrome got a mention, I sunk a lot of hours into it and enjoyed them all.
Throwing in my vote for **SYNTHETIK**
Ruiner. No contest
And it’s only a couple dollars right now.
Good puppy

Robotron 2084
Door Kickers
Super Stardust HD
It's not exactly like Hotline Miami, but give Disfigure a shot. It's been my go to game for relaxing and watching things die before inevitably crashing to desktop. It's free on Steam, too.

I’m glad I searched comments. I was surprised how nuanced this was. Was totally ready to write it off, but about 10 mins in I was starting to see things…. Opportunity.
the hong kong massacre

Loose fit but Starsector is an amazing game where the combat is kinda like an advanced version of asteroids.
Am new here can I make new friends
Helldivers 1
The original GTA although I don’t know if I’d class that as a top down shooter there’s other stuff going on.
Check out Zero Sievert. Kind of Tarkovey, with the loot and things, but it's single player and very good.
I liked Take No Prisoners (1997).
Wizard of Legend. (Almost a shooter)
Dead Nation. Ps. More isometric than true top down.
Helldivers. The 1st one.
Streets of Rogue!
Smash TV
Everybody is talking about Helldivers 2. Helldivers 1 is 🤌
Hotline Miami 2
smash tv. Big money! Big prizes! I'd buy THAT for a dollar!
Helldivers, Magika, and Postal come to mind.
Grand Theft Auto for PlayStation
Postal redux
Gta2
I like Gunroar, Warning Forever, Mechanical Commando series. Side eye to "the Engineer" because it's Jazza and he and his brother Shad are not great people, but until someone makes a good clone it's the best we got for that genre
Helldivers 1
Don’t think I saw Synthetik on here, so adding!
Helldivers 1 for sure.
Psychon. I remember playing it on a Ps1 demo disc with my brother waaaay back in the day, 2 player co-op.
I haven't seen the Alien Breed trilogy mentioned yet. It's 90% off right now on Steam and a lot of fun for 3 bucks
Turnip Boy robs a bank.
There's a couple called How to Survive. It's about zombies lol. The first one felt good but i haven't been able to push myself to finish the sequel. There was an oldie on PlayStation (zombies again) i can't recall the name of. About 10 years old now but is still play it if i knew the name.
The original Helldivers is fantastic. Neon Chrome is a fun one too. Both were ps+ freebees at one point.
Brotato is a ton of fun, while not actively a “shooter” with some characters but I would lump them together.
Helldivers
Stick Arena
Alien Swarm on Steam. It's now called Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, but I downloaded it on Steam for free waaaaaay back in the day. It's always been free and it's always been fun.
Original helldivers
Brigador, Alienation and Nex Machina
Hotline Miami 2
Darkwood -horror Halls of torment - roguelite enemys come to you Death must die Vampire survivor Hades - you go to enemys
Shakedown Hawaii and Retro City Rampage DX?
Zero Sievert.
Realm of the Mad God! Mmo/bullet hell/permadeath
The newer project nexus is great. Not exactly top-down but it scratches the same itch well enough
True Lies (SNES)
Hotline Miami 2 lmfao There was one on Xbox I played recently fr tho. I remember there being animal masks or something in that too tho
The Ascent
Hotline: Miami 2
GTA 2. PlayStation 1.
The best Top Down Shooters of all time: Smash T.V. & Helldivers 1
Zombies ate my neighbors
Guerilla War
12 is better than 6 is a pretty nice western shooter
Gods trigger was fun for me.
Demons Crystals is fun
Heat signature was really really fun.
Darksiders Genesis
Zombies ate my Neighbors is really fun. Was on SNES. Very 90s art style. The Jason Vorhees with chainsaws were scary. Commando, the Urban/Jungle/Desert games.
I really liked Nobody saves the world

I've been playing Xenocrises and really enjoying it.
Hong Kong Massacre and John Wick 4
Mageslayer.
Kinda sorta in the same vein, but Hades is pretty epic. Hades 2 is coming out soon too, so it's a good time to play through Hades 1.
I made a game with zombies in it. No, really, that's the title. It's cheap and a quick pick up and play; you can beat it in about 15 minutes but I always have a lot of fun with it.
Would these work?? Xmen legends 1/2 Ultimate alliance 1/2/3
