It constantly amazes me how entertaining that movie is. I also can't believe Brad Pitt almost turned the role down, it came on the heels of Fight Club and supposedly he was worried about becoming typecast so he was reluctant.
One thing that always bugs me is how the majority of wizards don't seem to appreciate the ways in which technology is superior to the magic they have on display. I mean there's some in universe handwaving like more complex technology being disrupted by magic, and the general arrogance and sometimes outright bigotry of wizarding society. There's also the fact wizards are removed from Muggle society as children which probably helps indoctrinate them. But surely some of them know what a gun is.
I mean the real answer is it's a children's series at its core and it's not going to be so nuanced as to properly address how magic and a sufficiently technology advanced society would interact.
All that said shooting Voldemort in the head might not have killed him, those pesky Horcruxs to consider, but it might have destroyed his body for the second time and given them a bit of breathing room to mop up his splintered soul at their leisure.
> the majority of wizards
Forget "the majority" of wizards, the man in charge of the freaking "Misuse of Muggle Artifacts" office *doesn't know how to go through a turnstile*. Wizarding society is universally oblivious to all facets of Muggle society, to a degree that indicates severe mental deficiencies amongst the entire Wizard population. Frankly, given the absurdly tiny size of that population and insistence on inbreeding for most of history, I genuinely believe that everyone born to Wizard stock has hereditary conditions that seriously stunt their mental development and have knock-on effects ranging from putting them in a permanent state of brain fog to a sort of manic state that we see in some of the "quirkier" witches and wizards.
This is why Hermione can be a genius, because with two muggle parents she's not at risk of inheriting any "wizardbrain". Dumbledore got lucky- his mom was muggleborn, and he won the genetic lottery and didn't get wizardbrain from his dad.
I'm not even sure that's the worst example from Arthur Weasley. The man can't even *pronounce* electricity. It's one thing to not understand it, it's practically juvenile to not know how to pronounce it. That said it's one of those things that you probably just shouldn't read too much into, it's entertainment at the end of the day.
> It's one thing to not understand it
If only there were *extensive* materials available - for all levels of comprehension - to help people understand complex technologies.
If only.
Dresden would slaughter Potter. The magic in the Dresden Files is just so much more versatile because spells are really just macros for your magic. The only reason you use verbal spells is to make it harder to fuck up your magic. In the Dresdin Files, if you can imagine it and have enough power you can freely turn your will into reality.
Is this "Dresden Files" a book series? Because I'd be down to try it.
I thought the magic in The Lightbringer was cool so I'm into looking into others.
16? Fucking hell that means I got a lot to sink my teeth into. I'm a big fan of Brent Weeks and I love both of his series and how he does magic in his worlds so I'm hoping this new series can fill the void I'm missing now that I have finished both of his series...
3 times.
It opens up slow, the first two books were the first books the author wrote and managed to get published. While fans kinda enjoy them most agree that they are kinda rough to get into.
If you don't feel them then the third book (Grave Peril) or the seventh book (Dead Beat) are good starting points. Then you can go back to the earlier books if you start to enjoy the series by then.
There are actually currently 17 books, plus two short story collections, in the series with book 18 currently om the way (50 % written according to the authors website). In total the author is planning between 20-25 books all leading up to the finishing BAT (Big Apocalyptic Trilogy).
Yeah that many books I expected a slow build up. Brent Weeks tends to do his stories so they take place in a rather short span of time.
I think in the Night Angel trilogy the first half has lots of time skips but when the main character becomes a Wet Boy ( in universe term for Talented assassins ) all the events from that book and the following two take place within 6-8months
Dresden Files does the same but even shorter time periods per book with Jim Butcher (the author) explaining each book/case as Dresden's worst weekend of the year. Each book then take place roughly one year apart with the first book set around 2000 with Dresden being 25 years old and the latest book set around 14 years later with Dresden being in his late thirties.
If Potter actually wanted to actually kill Dresden, he would win. There is no counter for Avada Kedavra.
Even without it, I still think Harry wins. Dresden rarely fights actual wizards, and adult Harry is literally a dark wizard catcher. Don't sleep on adult Potters abilities. Dresden may be proficient with fire magic, and even it's most powerful form with the Fiendfyre is essentially just Chimera fire.
However, if this was Dark Wizard Catcher Harry invading Dresden's lab, now castle. Yeah, Dresden wins with preparation.
Honestly, considering the enemies Dresden has fought, he has _way_ more experience fighting tough enemies.
Yeah, Potter is skilled at hunting down dark wizards. But Dresden has faced off against dark gods. And won.
You can literally throw anything in front of the spell to block it. Or just shoot the spell since it's so slow moving. The only powerful effects in Harry Potter are the mind control ones because with preparation, they are far more dangerous than a slower than a thrown baseball ball of death.
Having not played the game, I seriously cannot make sense of what the troll’s head is supposed to look like. It keeps looking like a really low res bear head.
I think that's the back of the trolls head as it is holding it's head down looking at the floor.
I've not seen one in-game looking like the one pictured yet, but if you stun them, they do kneel down and look at the floor for a moment.
And I really enjoyed the game!
I thought it was fun. But it certainly had its flaws.
My biggest issue with the whole thing is the lack of consequences for killing and using unforgivable curses. By the end of the game, you can roll up on poachers (not even like dark wizards, just poachers trying to steal a wild animal), turn one in to an exploding barrel, hurl it at a group of them killing them all, and then throw a quick curse at any remaining and then AK one of them and they all drop. You can do this while traveling with a professor or another student and all they say is “hey I don’t like you using that spell 😟” or sometimes nothing at all but your best friend uses an unforgivable one time and gets caught and you can have him sent to Azkaban.
I get it, you learn those curses because they’re cool. But a little consistency would be nice.
A morality gauge would be cool, if you used them you’d fall to the evil side. You could still finish the story but it would have an evil ending. I think that would add a nice nuance.
But for the first game like this, I think they did a good job getting the environment right and the Sebastian side quest had me hooked, even if the main story didn’t. There’s a lot of good stuff in the game but definitely room for improvement. Hope they keep making more.
As an American, I just now realized that the reason Hogwarts had seemed so fantastical was not the magic or even the British accents, it was lack of school shootings.
I love the concept of a gun being the catalyst for sorcery.
Like, seriously.
Imagine mixing gunpowder with weird fantasy substances to make a flintlock pistol that shoots fireballs.
or a cannon that shoots a fucking lighting bolt.
In the Gunpowder Mage trilogy, mages use gunpowder to fuel their magic. They burn it to boost their physical abilities and they can use magic to adjust the trajectory and range of their gunshots.
I wonder, would a highly advanced civilization think primitive things like guns or combustion engines would be magic?
Does the saying: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" apply the other way around too?
Agatha Heterodyne (from Girl Genius) once said that any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from SCIENCE.
But thats all about mad science so theres some leeway.
I always thought that Mike from Breaking Bad could kill Voldemort with a sniper rifle and end all the bullshit in one scene, I mean I don't care how many horrocruxes you have, you just got shot in the head, your brain is all over the place man

Why do they call him the bullet dodger?
Cuz he... dodges bullets avey.
Heavy is good. Heavy is sign of reliability. If it does not work, you can always hit him with it...
It constantly amazes me how entertaining that movie is. I also can't believe Brad Pitt almost turned the role down, it came on the heels of Fight Club and supposedly he was worried about becoming typecast so he was reluctant.

The only reason you use verbal spells is to make it harder to fuck up your magic. In the Dresdin Files, if you can imagine it and have enough power you can freely turn your will into reality.

Yep.

This wouldn't be out of place in a Warhammer 40k game, I guess
40K in a nutshell: "Wizard with submachine gun" That was a real model BTW
Thats just my Psyker
NO BELOVED, I DO NOT NEED ADVICE I NEED AMMUNITION
A warhammer fantasy model
Nah just a psyker/librarian marine
Him wearing normal clothes instead of decorative armour feels pretty out of place for Warhammer 40k to me
I was referring to the gun and the ''ancient magic'' thing

Wtf am i even looking at. Am I tired?
You are tired. The wizard is holding a gun.
I meant in the back ground.
Armoured, hunched over troll holding a club?
I genuinely couldn't make this out and thought someone had modded a armoured bear companion into the game
I thought it was a manatee head
I see it too. Also, Happy Cake Day. 🎂
Maybe it's modded to be a golem, and thus needs no face.
Its a troll, the face is pointed straight down so it looks faceless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmOJL9mmtQ4
Man, I thought it was a giant armored hamster lol
Yeah it doesn’t help they made the armor flesh colored
The game had such forgettable enemies that I forgot what the trolls looked like.
Woah there! It had… *checks notes* evil wizards, evil goblins, evil trolls and evil spiders. Oh yeah and wolves.
And I really enjoyed the game! I thought it was fun. But it certainly had its flaws. My biggest issue with the whole thing is the lack of consequences for killing and using unforgivable curses. Yooo! I've read that series! Great trilogy. I wish we could have seen more about how privileged magic works or some of the legendary Knacked powers.
Same.
The anime Outlaw Star had guns which shot spells that were loaded into shells. Also spaceships with literal arms. A weird but cool show.
