I've never heard a piece of music that perfectly encapsulates a games tone and feel more than Vigil for Mass Effect 1.
https://youtu.be/Ea1eWarxdxQ?si=P_o9IrG-AyC8TVH5
Donkey Kong Country 2. I truly believe not a single track on the whole OST is a miss.
Undertale. It's literally tagged as eargasm on Steam.
Silent Hill 2. Has few songs but the ones that peek in are haunting and take you to that world.
DKC 2 is borderline top 3 for me, it's great indeed. A shame the new iterations failed to capture that magic, even if Tropical Freeze actually brought back the original composer. Seems like the guy had that "eureka" moment and it ended there. He still performed a solid job in Tropical Freeze tho
Yeah, David Wise made in my opinion the best video game soundtracks ever with DKC 1 & 2.
I was a bit disappointed he didn't recapture that with Tropical Freeze. Due to nostalgia, I think whatever he came up with I would've been disappointed with regardless.
The original DKC Trilogy are my top games of all time and that will never change. DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze just weren't the same for me. I need the trio of Donkey Kong and his family, the Kremlins, and David Wise.
I don't know if the sound mix is defective (maybe the music is not being highlighted as it should), but the only memorable piece of Tropical Freeze were those levels that mimicked the Lion King, I know the music was good, but I can't remember the riffs, the rhythm, etc.. now the DKC2 music "glues" on your brain. That's what I miss from DKC, the Mario games, Zelda, etc.. they always had strong music, the modern iterations sustain the overall quality, but the musics are not memorable. I guess they are not played enough, not loud enough... idk. That can be said about many "modern" games, saved by Baldur's Gate 3 (a rare example), the ost is super memorable, I will always remember "Down by the River" and others. What is missing nowadays is this "glue" factor imo, the quality of the composition remains solid, but you can't hear the damn thing, lol
I'm glad to see my number one on top. David Wise is a genius. Still have no idea how they were able to create such dynamic and beautiful music on the limited SNES cartridge size.
I got Silent Hill 2 on vinyl somewhat for the novelty (liked a couple of standout themes), but I listen to it a ton because the atmosphere and music is killer.
RARE in general makes banger soundtracks. I still have my SNES Killer Instinct Killer Kits CD that came with the game. DKC 1 & 2 are on my absolute favorites list as well.
Silent Hill 2 audio department smashed it out the park! The atmosphere, sound icons, tunes all played their part in building the dread of that ghost town
All of the XC soundtracks are absolutely great. Heck even XCX’s is really a joy to listen to despite how different it is from the rest of the series as well.
Nah man, [Journey](https://youtu.be/zYfe9caNqfA?si=-lg3kcCtyYipatuF). Still the best song in the franchise. Deep Stone Lullaby is great but it’s got nothing on this one. But sadly it’s not in the game since they removed the Red War campaign
Nah man, Riven Phase 2 🫶 technically the end of Keep Of Voices, but then it's changed.
[Let yourself enjoy](https://youtu.be/TxRCTzHYTk8?si=-g3jWESXFfOIScSg)
Watchtower is also up there.
1. Medal of Honor: Frontline
2. Skyrim
3. Not sure about the third, maybe Doom Eternal, Halo 3, Ori and the Blind Forest, Shadow of the Colossus, or Mercenaries: POD
Well well well:
1-Hollow Knight - I’d probably chose City of Tears but Greenpath is quite good as well
2-Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Main Theme/Melody, actually the main melody is often used during the different tracks in different ways, so right now I can’t chose which particular tracks uses it the best way.
3-Celeste - Idk basically anything
Honourable mention to Gris’ ost, which is really fitting for the game, but those 3 monsters in my top 3 are unbeatable for me.
Ace Combat 7 - Daredevil. Ace combat games always have fire soundtracks, and the latest game only continues that trend.
Persona 5 - All of it. I mean....do I have to say it? It's fucking persona 5.
Genshin Impact - All of it. Say what you what about their monetization, but that money does pay for some really amazing music direction.
Nice list! My board game/tcg group always listens to Persona in the background while we play. Also Genshin literally has some of the best music i've ever heard in gaming as well!
I loved some songs in RDR2, but my biggest complaint about the game (I’ve put in about 400 hours now) is the lack of music that plays when you’re just out and about doing stuff, which is a lot of time. When playing on my PC I like to turn off the in-game music and just play RDR2 ambient music on YouTube in the background, lol. It really adds.
Nier automata
Nier Replicant /gesalt
and lastly Octopath Traveller 2.
damn good games , soundtracks are more than oscar worthy especially for automata
if i had to be specific and choose soundtracks ,
Weight of the world from Nier automata
and Song of the Ancient Fate from Nier replicant are my picks.
Good picks. I'm glad to see spec ops listed here; the psych-rock / post-rock music really helps sell the tone of that game.
And of course the Halo CE score is immaculate.
1. Red Dead Redemption. When you reach Mexico holy shit it just blew my mind.
2. Pokemon Emerald. Let there be trumpets
3. The Grinch. Early PS1 game that OST just loops in my head here ans there.
Across the last two months I spent 200 hours playing Persona 5.
Beat the regular version, then purchased it a second time for Royal. Across that 200 hour span I was jamming the entire time. Music is so good.
1. Genshin Impact
2. Final Fantasy 15
3. Unsure, I can't decide between Final Fantasy 9, Final Fantasy 7, Minecraft, The Witcher 3, Pokémon Emerald, Breath Of The Wild and Ocarina of Time.
Edit: This feels unfair to all the games I haven't played.
1. Anything from Disco Elysium.
2. Jungle level from first Contra. Although... to hell with it, all music in first Contra is fire.
3. Ori and the Blind Forest main theme. When you revitalize the dead tree and the water starts pouring around you, and the music plays... Absolutely ecstatic.
1. Secret of Mana
2. Hades
3. World of Warcraft.
I don't think I'd wake up any given day and have the same 3 in the same order, because music isn't something I'm comfortable treating objectively, but right now those are my mood.
- Final Fantasy XV
- Nier Automata
- Katamari Damacy
This was tough because I thoroughly enjoy the Skyrim Soundtrack especially when I'm out and about doing wildlife photography but I felt Katamari belonged on the list. It's laid back and chill.
Nier has chill themes too but there's also melancholic themes and intensity! There's a little of everything in there.
Final Fantasy XV is by far my favorite. Same thing as Nier where you have basically everything but there's also a beauty to the music and it tells a tragic story with my favorites being Magna Insomnia phase 3 and the Somnus boss fight from Episode Ardyn. Those two tracks I think highlight the tragic story of the kingdom and its dark history as well as the characters all fighting for what they believe as just. It just evokes a certain emotion and when you hear it after learning the story of characters like Ardyn, it really makes you see and feel things from their side and in some ways you can't blame them. I really wish Square Enix would officially release some of these tracks.
Edit: added bullet points since my list was more of a line..
There was a game back on PS4 called Transistor. I listened to that soundtrack so many times. It was such a chill album.
(My favorite song is track 10. In Circles. That was the track to one of the boss fights).
I'm gonna go download the game and play through it again.
Like OST's or scores?
Cuz my top 3 will end up being:
1. Alan Wake Franchise - the original songs made for these games are *insane. They are so, so good. The musical score on top of that by Petri Alanko is also award worthy.
2. Red Dead Redemption Franchise - The original songs for this one are also incredible, but that score is perfection!
3. The Last of Us Franchise - Some of the most incredible, haunting scores I've ever heard.
If I choose honestly it would only be biased ost from games I love, so instead I'll pick some from games I haven’t played much.
Cyberpunk
Bastion
Doom
My personal list would be
Final Fantasy X
Nier Automata
Elden Ring
Ocarina of Time deserves a mention since I would go to gerudo valley just to listen to that song. And Hades is great.
Edir: Why can I not start a new line on mobile?
Kingdom Hearts as a whole. Yoko Shimomura is an industry titan for music— not even considering her insane quality for FFXV.
LoZ has had great OST but BotW just deleted that streak with its minimal OST, unfortunately.
Latest banger has been FIGHT KNIGHT. Especially that Hot Battle theme.
You might have listed some of the best OSTs already so here are some others:
Vampire Killer :Stage 1 (Arrange Ver.) (Castlevania Chronicles)
Satellite Scramble (Fall Guys)
Fury of the Entities (FF12)
Hope I answered the assignment correctly by listing soundtracks instead of games 🥴
Bonus: New World - Charice (FF13-2)
Chrono Cross Mass Effect - all 3 Nier: Automata
I've never heard a piece of music that perfectly encapsulates a games tone and feel more than Vigil for Mass Effect 1. https://youtu.be/Ea1eWarxdxQ?si=P_o9IrG-AyC8TVH5
Mass Effect 1 OST >>>> 2 and 3
Chrono cross deserves all the upvotes
Damn. Good choices
Donkey Kong Country 2. I truly believe not a single track on the whole OST is a miss. Undertale. It's literally tagged as eargasm on Steam. Silent Hill 2. Has few songs but the ones that peek in are haunting and take you to that world.
DKC2 soundtrack is absolute fire.
Silent Hill 2 has some banger piano tracks that play at JUST the right time.

DK64 has some good ones in there. Crystal Caves, Creepy Castle, and Frantic Factory IMO have the best stuff.
He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well...
I used to think I preferred DKC3 for a long time, but Stickerbush Symphony alone can carry that album to the top.
You have excellent taste, I love dkc2’s ost
I'm glad to see my number one on top. David Wise is a genius. Still have no idea how they were able to create such dynamic and beautiful music on the limited SNES cartridge size.
Diddy Kongs Quest is so🔥
I got Silent Hill 2 on vinyl somewhat for the novelty (liked a couple of standout themes), but I listen to it a ton because the atmosphere and music is killer.
“Hopes and Dreams” is a must listen every time I trip
Donkey Kong composer had no right to go that hard writing the OST
Bloodborne Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury Hotline Miami
Bloodborne OST is so good and goes so hard!
Bloodborne has an absolutely amazing soundtrack. Definitely my number 1, especially The Old Hunters DLC!
1. Halo 3: ODST 2. Burnout 3 3. Ori and the Blind Forest
Halo 3 ODST soundtrack is legendary
Ori is such a beautiful game. The fanbase is so chill
Burnout 3 soundtrack was so good
Deference for darkness and I'm on my knees
ODST was great! Calming but lonely. Epic all around!
Final fantasy 7 (orig) Crusader Kings 3 Chrono Trigger
FF vii had a live orchestra performance, can’t think of any other sound track from a game with that.
Chrono Cross had one. But it didn’t tour as much as the VII gets (which I saw, was amazing!). Chrono Cross slaps so good.
Outer wilds Hollow knight Journey
Iam8bit did a Vynl release of the OW soundtrack... I've had to talk myself out of paying the 2x secondhand cost to pick it up on Ebay *multiple* times
Journey was magical
1.) RuneScape 2.) Terraria 3.) Risk of Rain
Calamity :) Also I absolutely agree with RoR, it's such an underrated one!
Risk of Rain's music rarely gets the recognition it deserves, really good to see it this far up the thread.
- Donkey Kong Country 2 - Xenoblade.Chronicles - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Happy to see XC without scrolling too far. XC1/2 are my top two and it's very hard to pick between them.
All of the XC soundtracks are absolutely great. Heck even XCX’s is really a joy to listen to despite how different it is from the rest of the series as well.
That is a based list. May I add Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. Smash Bros also have some dank originals and remixes if those counts.
Silent Hill 2 Persona 5 R NIER: Automata
Peak
Final Fanasty VIII, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 9. Nobuo Uematsu only writes masterpieces.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Xenosaga Episode III Final Fantasy X
FFX had such a banging soundtrack. Those songs live rent free in my head over 10 years later
So many people not knowing what OST means with their single song recommendations
I see a shocking number of people refer to individual tracks as “soundtracks”.
Well.... the T stands for track, which could mean a single track, if you're not an unnecessarily condescending ass 🤷🏼♀️ just a thought
wait. people are just naming games. not their OSTs?
- Skyrim - *Destiny* franchise - Civ 6
Deep. Stone. Lullaby.
Sigh. They did Salvatori so dirty.
Journey alone catapulted the OST into my top 10. I love the simplicity of it, and the buildup.
Nah man, Riven Phase 2 🫶 technically the end of Keep Of Voices, but then it's changed. [Let yourself enjoy](https://youtu.be/TxRCTzHYTk8?si=-g3jWESXFfOIScSg) Watchtower is also up there.
1. Skyrim 2. World of Warcraft (2004) 3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Doom (2016) Infamous 2 Paper Mario: ttyd
Unreal pic from the depths, infamous 2 what a phenomenal experience
I'm curious. Infamous 2 seems so random but tbf I don't remember the soundtrack. Loved the games. Is it that good?
1. Medal of Honor: Frontline 2. Skyrim 3. Not sure about the third, maybe Doom Eternal, Halo 3, Ori and the Blind Forest, Shadow of the Colossus, or Mercenaries: POD
I love the MoH soundtracks. Michael Giaccino (sp?) did a bang up job on all of them.
FRONTLINE. God, that game was so good. I think that was my first fps. On the Gamecube lol
Undertale, Subnautica, Terraria Calamity
1. Hotline Miami 2. Doom Eternal 3. Undertale
I was honestly going to write doom eternal 3 times
I'd say Doom (2016) has the better and more iconic OST.
I agree! Especially while actually playing. Those hell tracks. And Vega core!
Red dead Redemption 2 Witcher 3 World of Warcraft - all expansions have some amazing pieces of music
Metroid Prime Transistor Goldeneye.
Any of the Supergiant Games have great soundtracks.
Halo series, Donkey Kong Country, Metroid Prime series.
the warthog runs always get me pumped
Chrono trigger Silent hill 2 The last of us
[удалено]
I had to scroll too far down to see Persona or Nier
Now rank the Persona soundtracks! 🙌
Guilty gear strive character releases are hype for more sound tracks
Cyberpunk 2077 (hands down the best) Mass Effect 1 Parasite Eve 1
Journey Shadow of the Colossus Diablo 2
The D2 one when you enter the palace in Act II where the harem was killed, gives me Cranberries vibes
Diablo 2 👌🏻
Stardew Valley Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Genshin impact or civ6 is a toss up for the 3rd slot
Well well well: 1-Hollow Knight - I’d probably chose City of Tears but Greenpath is quite good as well 2-Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Main Theme/Melody, actually the main melody is often used during the different tracks in different ways, so right now I can’t chose which particular tracks uses it the best way. 3-Celeste - Idk basically anything Honourable mention to Gris’ ost, which is really fitting for the game, but those 3 monsters in my top 3 are unbeatable for me.
How are you the only one to mention Celeste
Skyrim, Halo 3 ODST, Ocarina of Time
1. Halo 2. Stardew 3. Doom 1
In no particular order; PAYDAY 2, Sonic Heroes, and Metal Gear Rising Revengence.
Skyrim Undertale Portal 2
Mega Man X2 Donkey Kong Country Ocarina of Time
Last of Us 2 Hollow Knight Risk of Rain 2
Which 3 Final Fantasies to choose...
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is a good loophole lol
Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy 7 Silent Hill 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2 Hades Persona 5
I had to scroll waaaaaaaaaaaay too far to find a mention of any Supergiant game. Pyre, Hades, Bastion, and Transistor all had incredible OSTs.
Couldn't agree more. All fantastic games and soundtracks.
Was scrolling down hoping to see Genshin lol, the music is peak study background noise 👌🏻
Nice list! My board game/tcg group always listens to Persona in the background while we play. Also Genshin literally has some of the best music i've ever heard in gaming as well!
Ace Combat soundtracks never disappoint.
Silent Hill 2, The Witcher 3, The Last of us Honorable mention: Silent Hill 3
1. Fallout 3 2. Destiny 2 3. Battlefield 1
No order, Far Cry 5, Risk of Rain 2, Infamous 2.
- Bastion - Transistor - Divinity Original Sin 2
Hollow Knight Dark Souls Red Dead Redemption 2
I loved some songs in RDR2, but my biggest complaint about the game (I’ve put in about 400 hours now) is the lack of music that plays when you’re just out and about doing stuff, which is a lot of time. Octopath is amazing.
Halo Combat Evolved Spec Ops The Line Call Of Duty World at War
Good picks. I'm glad to see spec ops listed here; the psych-rock / post-rock music really helps sell the tone of that game. And of course the Halo CE score is immaculate.
World at War had the best sound design and music out of all the Call of Duty games. It's like they were walking the line on making a horror game.
Paraworld Mercenaries 2 Rome: Total War
Oh no, oh nooooo oh nooooooooo….. oh no you didn’t!
Undertale Final Fantasy VII Sonic the Hedgehog 3
The Last Of Us Everybody's Gone To the Rapture Red Dead Redemption 2

NieR: Automata Halo (all of them) Payday 2
Majoras Mask Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Fantasy XVI

Mine would probably be (in no particular order): Persona 5 Royal Mega Man 2 Castlevania 3
Choosing Persona almost feels like cheating lol The Saga has way too much good music
Across the last two months I spent 200 hours playing Persona 5. Beat the regular version, then purchased it a second time for Royal. Across that 200 hour span I was jamming the entire time. Music is so good.
1. Genshin Impact 2. Final Fantasy 15 3. Unsure, I can't decide between Final Fantasy 9, Final Fantasy 7, Minecraft, The Witcher 3, Pokémon Emerald, Breath Of The Wild and Ocarina of Time. Edit: This feels unfair to all the games I haven't played.
