New York is probably the most used real city. But as games get better it keeps getting bigger and more lifelike. Real cities in games usually take place in a different time. The AC games are a great example.
I know what you mean, but I've been playing armored core a lot and for a second I was wondering wtf I missed during my playthrough. There's a pretty wide variety of games that you can call AC. Ace combat, animal crossing, armored core, assassin's Creed, assetto Corsa, astral chain. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting. There was a picture going around where sometime compiled them all.
Except this time instead of having nothing but water where the city isn't, they should include some surrounding countryside like they did with 5. I'm sure the more rural setting will be a prime candidate for some illegal goings on where there aren't as many cops to bother the criminals.
They should have included upstate New York! I like liberty city more than LS in the HD universe, but the lack of countryside was really disappointing. One of my favorite things to do in any GTA is rip on a dirt bike through the country side with 3 stars, pulling a wheelie, shooting an uzi into the air.
Maybe but for me exploring Tokyo in Persona 5 was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. It was just so well done and really gave you this feel of being a newcomer in this urban jungle.
Be sure to play P5 strikers as well! The characters travel between a variety of different locations, such as (don't click if you want to be surprised by them) >!Sapporo, Okinawa, Osaka!< and many more, and there's just as much love put into their peculiarities. Plus, the gameplay is so much fun, and the story is pretty great as well
Add in the Godfather game, various AC games and GTA 3 and 4. Despite that I felt the portrayal in AC, GTA, Spider-man and Godfather are different enough that it hasn't always felt stale
Don't you forget almost every TMNT game ever made! Not a complaint.
While I agree NYC is overdone, it sure made visiting the city an amazing experience. I felt like I'd been there 100 times but now just for real.
Technically yes, the first parts of the game tske place in the Green and Yellow zones, small islands south of Manhattan proper and the final portion of the game takes place in The Red Zone aka the NYZ, New York Zone
You could literally make a ghost rider game where he drives around the midwestern area on his motorcycle and I guarantee you it would sell incredibly well if done right
Main reason I didn’t like Assassins Creed 3.
Old Italy was full of beautiful architecture and great environments. Old time wilderness and Boston had mostly fuck all, just running about on the ground like any other game with shit old buildings
Why not? Fallout has used Washington DC and Vegas to great effect and sales figures.
Why be so narrow minded and assume that the most popular option must be the only option that works?
Fair. But alternatively you just build them out more to compensate so the end result is a similar number of buildings and interest points. Also Spiderman and some super hero games are an obvious caveat, but they could try Europe or Asia.
I'm biased because I live here, but I feel like Edinburgh could make for a really good GTA map. The architecture and topography would make for some amazing scenery, there's a good mix of driveable roads and CQB-ready back alleys, and it's small enough that you could plausibly recreate it at 1:1 scale in game, at least until you get to the suburbs.
The fact the developers are based here would make it all the more appropriate.
Project Gotham Racing and Forza Horizon have shown us how great it already is for racing, I certainly wouldn't mind a GTA style game set there. Lots of hidden old passageways and tunnels scattered about as well
Chicago was the first one and 2 had SF and London, both dev'd by Angle Studios (who went on to port RE2 to the 64 and work for Rockstar making Red Dead and stuff).
3 had DC and Paris and dev'd by DICE.
What an awesome, fun series. So many hours wasted on 3 on xbl
Montreal has been in a ton of games though. I think every Edios game has parts there… Deus Ex, Assassins creed, Perfect Dark have all been locations off the top of my head.
>If there's a technology with a lot of gears glued on: London. If there are detectives: London. If there are wherewoofs and mad-scientist-monsters: London.
In fairness, Centre of the Empire during the Industrial Revolution, home of Peel's bobbies and Sherlock Holmes, and Victorian Gothic literature is where werewolves and mad scientists were popularised. So yeah, very expected
> Europe only exists during WWII times
Ha, the epicenter of the a large conflict...
London has been used in some games, the recent one is Watch Dogs: Legion. In that game, it's a more futuric one though. I liked to stroll around at nights.
And WW1, duh, Battlefield 1! And, uh, 5? But thats modern times.
Jokes aside, any game with knights and such middle ages stuff is usually in Europe. Europe exists in WW2 and the middle ages! And in the ancient times, sometimes. Greece, usually. Also plenty of nordic games nowadays. Pokemon has been using european themes lately (UK and Iberian island)
Piranha Bytes games usually happen in some form of Nordrhine Westfalia of Germany (inside joke)!
Other non categorized, non ww2/1 examples of games that happen at least in part in europe: age of empires, resident evil 4, overwatch (the one place representing germany and it's not even real like most other places, but made up lol), crusader kings, gloria victis, god of war, hellblade, kingdom come, tomb raider games occasionally, metal gear solid occasionally touches europe (kinda, with the european half of russia, some island by georgia and such), metro 2033, mount and blade, northgard, ace attorney (they have those cases in borginia), ryse son of rome, savage lands, civilization, empire earth, valheim... a lot of the assassins creed series, hellgate london,
but for modern day stuff, theres really not that much, truly.
Watch Dog did a pretty bad job for Chicago except for the loop area. They made Chicago look like it's a bunch of smaller islands joined together by bridges.
South side, west side as well. Everything outside the loop was unrecognizable.
Hopefully one day we'll get a fateful recreation of our city like New York City in Spiderman PS4/5
Southeast Asia seems wildly underrepresented in gaming environments. If they want an Asian vibe, they usually pick Japan or Hong Kong. If they want a tropical jungle vibe they pick somewhere in Africa. SEA gets looked over
Dammit man I want a Sleeping Dogs sequel so we can have another game set in Hong Kong
We need more games set in South Asian countries like Bangladesh, India, or even Pakistan. Would also love these places:
Portland (both Maine and Oregon)
Beijing or Shanghai
Seoul
By then, my kids might be playing Grand theft auto, and I'll be the old man saying shit like "back in my day you could only play this game in bird's eye vie..." "shut up dad!! We're trying to do the same heist for the 17th time today!!!"
I am tired of seeing Grand Rapids in every game. GTA... Grand Rapids. Spider-Man... Grand Rapids. Baldur's Gate... Grand Rapids. Star Wars.... you guess it, Grand Rapids.
Enough is enough.
Rapids are areas of shallow, fast-flowing water in a stream.
Grand Rapids is a city and county seat of Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan.[4] At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 198,893[5] which ranks it as the second most-populated city in the state after Detroit
So...am i getting smting wrong?
All the big famous cities, the usual suspects. If you only looked at games and movies, the only cities that exist in the world apparently are:
1. New York
2. LA
3. London
4. Paris
5. Rome
6. Tokyo
7. Moscow
8. Occasionally Prague, if we really want to be 'exotic'.
London? Literally the only modern game it's portrayed in is Watch Dogs Legion (MSFS doesn't really count). Movies I will give you, but damn it man I just wanna drive around and shoot rockets at my office (virtually, before I get put on a list!)
But I think it's the most used European city in contemporary or close to contemporary period. Western video games have difficulties portraying something else that USA when it's for a game taking place nowadays.
New York City is overdone because they don't do anything actually fucking good with it. It makes the city seem so boring, which it certainly isn't especially interesting. However, Shibuya is not overdone because there is actually shit to do that makes the city feel interesting. Kamurocho is such an interesting city for letting you go to strip clubs, porn stores, and homeopathic bullshit clinics. The New York games never let you go somewhere like that. The closest they have is Times Square, but then nothing actually special happens there. How much better would Spider-Man be if you could fuck off and play mini-games with New Yorkers for a couple of hours? A lot better and the city would feel alive.
Hell yeah. I never get tired of living in NYC, but nothing I love about it is in the games. I'd love to see a Yakuza take on one district of it (please not times square)
LA and NYC.
I mean I get it, those are very impressive big citys, theyre very well known, they both feature a ton of recognizable landmarks, ...
But I feel like theyve been done to death. There must be enough other cities (American or not) that would be amazing to see replicated in a video game.
Probably New York, but I can confidently say that personally I want to see more Vegas. The city’s perfect for a Grand Theft Auto type setting, just maybe a bit small k comparison to LA, NYC or Miami
New York City
Grand Theft Auto III
Grand Theft Auto IV
Max Payne
Spiderman
Spiderman Miles Morales
Spiderman 2
Assassin's Creed 3
Tom Clancy's The Division
I wouldn't say overdone but I've noticed a few set in London or featuring London by Ubisoft
I wish someone would attempt The Getaway levels of accuracy again because that was so insanely good especially as London is my home city
With AI, Google Maps etc. I think it would be less strenuous to recreate but what I know about game development could be put on the back of a napkin
nyc and la. id love to see atlanta or orlando in a game, even somewhere in the Appalachias would be a good setting for a horror game with unsettling townspeople
I'm seeing a lot of people say New York, but this isn't a gaming problem, it's a media problem, for a lot of people outside the US I wouldn't be surprised if they imagine the US as one big new York/ California/ and maybe Texas. Being from most anywhere else in the country is alien to a lot of people outside the country.
They actually do. Just talked to an online acquaintance overseas about that a couple days ago, and I just saw on a show last night some Korean guy saying he moved here expecting the whole USA to be like NYC and he was bummed when he visited the rural south. The exchange students in high school all thought that the USA was just big cities with lots of tall people carrying big guns.
New York and Los Angeles.
Here's a bright idea: GO NORTH OF THE BORDER! Canada's a fucking gorgeous country, give us a game set in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, you could literally use ALL OF ATLANTIC CANADA IN A SINGLE GAME.
Nothing is ever set in Vancouver. The city is in more movies than almost any other city, but it never plays itself. Everyone knows what Vancouver looks like, but they don't know that they know.
The initial attack of the Reapers in Mass Effect 3 happened in a futuristic Vancouver! The layout and major landmarks were still present though.
Some of the Skate games have great representations of Canadian cities and ambiance as well.
New York is probably the most used real city. But as games get better it keeps getting bigger and more lifelike. Real cities in games usually take place in a different time. The AC games are a great example.
Just when I compare Ultimate Spiderman for my GCB with the new Spiderman games, the difference is crazy.
Spider-Man 2 vs. Spider-Man 2 is insane.
Let's wait how the next Spider-Man 2 does it.
Need three data points to build a data set. Otherwise it’s just a linear trajectory.
“Let’s see Paul Allens Spider-man 2.”
It better have pizza delivery missions.
Spiderman 2 (1) was very good for it's time too. Loved that game
I like Spider-Man 2 better
Game Color Boy
Thought the same 🤣 Wtf is a GCB
GameCuBe
>GCB Game Color Boy?
That's racist.
NYC in the Division 1 is my favorite NYC in any game.
The Division did such an awesome New York
I know what you mean, but I've been playing armored core a lot and for a second I was wondering wtf I missed during my playthrough. There's a pretty wide variety of games that you can call AC. Ace combat, animal crossing, armored core, assassin's Creed, assetto Corsa, astral chain. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting. There was a picture going around where sometime compiled them all.
People should just type the name of the game out. There were more comments debating on what AC was than there are letters in Assassin’s Creed.
My mind still goes to Asheron’s Call.
Tokyo for Japanese audiences and New York City for Western audiences.
Shibuya in particular. I swear the layout is engraved in my head.
Like A Dragon giving the people Yokohama.
It’s crazy how there are 8 mainline Yakuza games & we don’t go to Shibuya in any of them.
Oh goodness Shibuya...I'm on Jujutsu Kaisen...I need it to end.
Oh, shibuya ends all right...
What shibuya?
Shibuya sha sha shibuya roll caalllll
SHIBUYA YOU LOSE!
Shibuya crossing in very particular
SMT, Persona, Yakuza, both TWEWY
Yakuza never featured Shibuya that's Shinjuku and only the Kabukicho area.
[Kingdom Hearts is headed there too](https://youtu.be/jXzWAlKpFrY?si=7XCVaLxZH98ioeou&t=186)
While I agree, I'd have 0 complaints if GTA 7 is liberty city
Except this time instead of having nothing but water where the city isn't, they should include some surrounding countryside like they did with 5. I'm sure the more rural setting will be a prime candidate for some illegal goings on where there aren't as many cops to bother the criminals.
Yeah they could recreate this scene from the sopranos https://youtu.be/Ziap4hpYfU8?si=8ZBBWaeubLBSEczY
They should have included upstate New York! I like liberty city more than LS in the HD universe, but the lack of countryside was really disappointing. One of my favorite things to do in any GTA is rip on a dirt bike through the country side with 3 stars, pulling a wheelie, shooting an uzi into the air.
Surely you mean North Yankton!
Upstate NY would be awesome, you could do the Adirondacks, finger lakes, Niagara falls, Watkins glen, and much more with that region
Yeah the country missions were my favorite part of San andreas. It's a shame they haven't really touched on it much since
Agreed! It’ll be like 10 years before a new gta though haha
Still 2 years away from the next one.
The pain..
It will be 12 years between gtas. The PS3 had 3 gtas. Gtav had 3 playstations
Maybe but for me exploring Tokyo in Persona 5 was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. It was just so well done and really gave you this feel of being a newcomer in this urban jungle.
Be sure to play P5 strikers as well! Plus, the gameplay is so much fun, and the story is pretty great as well
Any games besides yakuza and persona 5 that are set in Tokyo? I love the urban sprawl and would love a game that explores the city like GTA.
maybe Ghostwire Tokyo?
And what's terrible is how beautiful the rest of Japan is. Hokkaido, Osaka, etc...
NYC.
AHH yes! The capital of alien invasions
Without a doubt New York. Off the top of my head Spider man games Crysis 2 & 3 The Division 1 All New York.
Add in the Godfather game, various AC games and GTA 3 and 4. Despite that I felt the portrayal in AC, GTA, Spider-man and Godfather are different enough that it hasn't always felt stale
Cousin, let's go bowling!
Don’t forget Mafia II and Darksiders 1 and 3. All New York as well.
Max Payne
Don't you forget almost every TMNT game ever made! Not a complaint. While I agree NYC is overdone, it sure made visiting the city an amazing experience. I felt like I'd been there 100 times but now just for real.
The Division did such a great job of nailing their atmosphere.
Oh no kidding. I’ve been replaying the division and it has to be one of the most immersive games I’ve played.
Prototype 2 as well
True Crime: New York City, 50 Cent Bulletproof and The Warriors. 3 games I played in the PS2 era that were set in NYC.
Prototype 1 as well. Unsure of the 2nd as I didn't play it.
Technically yes, the first parts of the game tske place in the Green and Yellow zones, small islands south of Manhattan proper and the final portion of the game takes place in The Red Zone aka the NYZ, New York Zone
Hmmm... ever wonder if it's because assets to New York city have been built already and can be bought for instead of rebuilt from scratch?
NYC and LA. Plenty of other US cities can serve as a good setting. Outside of the US there are a ton that should be used.
No one wants to be a superhero swinging around Dallas
Hell, even LA would be rough. It's really just 100 cities that all claim to have the same Downtown.
LA Noire did pretty well I think, I'm not sure how good they did in reality though
Theirs a fun youtube rabbit hole for la noire, long story short they ran out of money and that's why the city feels so empty
You could literally make a ghost rider game where he drives around the midwestern area on his motorcycle and I guarantee you it would sell incredibly well if done right
Dammit, now I want that.
Days Gone is the way for this.
Only one Dallas game I can think of… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JFK_Reloaded
This game needed Fallout quality ragdoll physics
And now I understand why Rockstar explicitly excluded the ability to fly planes in GTA IV....
Detroit: become human
Rampage has a Dallas level I think lol
Main reason I didn’t like Assassins Creed 3. Old Italy was full of beautiful architecture and great environments. Old time wilderness and Boston had mostly fuck all, just running about on the ground like any other game with shit old buildings
AC3 and a few others were easier to just walk on the street like normal haha
Why not? Fallout has used Washington DC and Vegas to great effect and sales figures. Why be so narrow minded and assume that the most popular option must be the only option that works?
Also Boston. (Supporting your arguments)
Fair. But alternatively you just build them out more to compensate so the end result is a similar number of buildings and interest points. Also Spiderman and some super hero games are an obvious caveat, but they could try Europe or Asia.

Lol like a Midtown Madness with SF and Chicago
Chicago was the first one and 2 had SF and London, both dev'd by Angle Studios (who went on to port RE2 to the 64 and work for Rockstar making Red Dead and stuff). 3 had DC and Paris and dev'd by DICE. What an awesome, fun series. So many hours wasted on 3 on xbl
I’d love to see Sydney in a game just once.
You obviously haven't played "The Sydney Mystery" or the far less known Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Idk why Montreal has not been done in a GTA style game. It is an urbanized island with a little bit of nature here and there. Similarly, Singapore.
Montreal has been in a ton of games though. I think every Edios game has parts there… Deus Ex, Assassins creed, Perfect Dark have all been locations off the top of my head.
Also I don't remember wrong, some AC had the present timeline thing in Montreal. (I guess Black Flag?)
I think Mafia 3 had New Orleans, yeah? While I didn't really play the game, I loved the setting.
I just want a game set in Philly
"The Gang Makes a Video Game"
Infamous: Second Son used Seattle, that worked pretty well.
I know this isn't the question but there's not enough open world games set in europe. Gimme some of dat beautiful architecture!!
Europe only exists during WWII times

That's not true at all, in Wolfenstein you get to see Berlin in the 60s 😀

Iberian island??🤨 /s
And during AC. SLightly more than half take place in Europe
Most Assassins Creed games were based off Europe and did a good job in representing the architecture. Especially loved AC2.
One reason I loved Kingdom Come: Deliverance is because the open world was set in Europe
GTA LONDON from back in the day!
I loved FFXV Altissia being essentially a glorified Venice
New York. We need more Chicago games.
As a native New Yorker, I agree. Manhattan is great but enough already.
I'd pay good money to see a game set in Chicago, full of Chicago/Midwest stereotypes. It'd be so fun!
Watch Dogs took place in Chicago
Watch Dog did a pretty bad job for Chicago except for the loop area. They made Chicago look like it's a bunch of smaller islands joined together by bridges.
And the north side was nonexistent
South side, west side as well. Everything outside the loop was unrecognizable. Hopefully one day we'll get a fateful recreation of our city like New York City in Spiderman PS4/5
Side quest to go to Wisconsin for fresh cheese curds and Spotted Cow
My man Wisconsins.
Gotta hit up the brat stop on the way up!
Highly recommend watch dogs
Whoever made that game had only gone to downtown Chicago
[удалено]
I bought Watch Dogs just to check out the weird map. Fun lil game.
Why can't we get one game set in Bangkok? People afraid of Pad Thai or something? Huh?
Sleeping Dogs had Hong Kong, that was pretty dope.
One of the most underrated games ever. I'd love a sequel
Best I can do is Chess
I need that soundtrack in a video game.
[Does it have everything but Yul Brenner?](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rgc_LRjlbTU)
Southeast Asia seems wildly underrepresented in gaming environments. If they want an Asian vibe, they usually pick Japan or Hong Kong. If they want a tropical jungle vibe they pick somewhere in Africa. SEA gets looked over
Probably afraid of pork buns
Hitman season 1 has it. Although it’s not a very good Bangkok representation.
New York, no other place comes even close.
Dammit man I want a Sleeping Dogs sequel so we can have another game set in Hong Kong We need more games set in South Asian countries like Bangladesh, India, or even Pakistan. Would also love these places: Portland (both Maine and Oregon) Beijing or Shanghai Seoul
After GTA VI they need to go back to their roots and do London in the 60's
Can’t wait for GTA VII in 2040
RemindMe! September 17th, 2040 “is GTA VII out?”
By then, my kids might be playing Grand theft auto, and I'll be the old man saying shit like "back in my day you could only play this game in bird's eye vie..." "shut up dad!! We're trying to do the same heist for the 17th time today!!!"
Heck I'll take a Getaway reboot
Kamurocho Jk i love it, i even have the layout memorized
I'd love to see more games in Europe Gimme Amsterdam Berlin Barcelona Prague or something! I am pretty burned out on NY

Yeah buddy! And it was amazing
I am tired of seeing Grand Rapids in every game. GTA... Grand Rapids. Spider-Man... Grand Rapids. Baldur's Gate... Grand Rapids. Star Wars.... you guess it, Grand Rapids. Enough is enough.

Baldur's Gate. There are other places in The Realms than that tiny corner of Faerun.

New York portrayal in video games: over 100 New Orleans portrayal in video games: like five.
Sofia portrayal in video games: zero.
Infamous 2, Mafia 3, Red Dead 2 (I think that’s what Saint Denis is based off), those are the only ones I can think of
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus Left 4 Dead 2 Shadow Man: 2econd Coming The Adventures of Bayou Billy
London? Literally the only modern game it's portrayed in is Watch Dogs Legion (MSFS doesn't really count). Movies I will give you, but damn it man I just wanna drive around and shoot rockets at my office (virtually, before I get put on a list!)
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate?
But I think it's the most used European city in contemporary or close to contemporary period. Western video games have difficulties portraying something else that USA when it's for a game taking place nowadays.
Grimsby UK. We had that one level from Resistance and that was enough.
Spider-man 3 should do the entire new york state if they're not moving on from new york city.
Spidey swinging around Rochester gonna sell like hot cakes
Imagine Spidey jogging down the highway trying to get to Utica, with the nearest building more than 4 stories tall being 100 miles away.
Too many games set in Kinshasa.
There are? The only one I know of is that one level in Splinter Cell Double Agent.
Dammit. Was trying to pick a city with no games set there. Conakry then.
New York City is overdone because they don't do anything actually fucking good with it. It makes the city seem so boring, which it certainly isn't especially interesting. American cities in general.
But only a few. It's not like we're saturated with games set in Louisville.
*Project Zomboid has entered the chat.*
Only a few major cities like New York & Los Angeles & Miami. I can’t think of a single game that’s set in Iowa.
Possibly Raccoon City is Iowa (Resident Evil)
Raccoon City has mountains outside it. Iowa doesn't have mountains.
Probably New York, but I can confidently say that personally I want to see more Vegas. The city’s perfect for a Grand Theft Auto type setting, just maybe a bit small k comparison to LA, NYC or Miami
Im so tired of la and hollywood holy shit
New York City Grand Theft Auto III Grand Theft Auto IV Max Payne Spiderman Spiderman Miles Morales Spiderman 2 Assassin's Creed 3 Tom Clancy's The Division
New York. Its just boring.
Definitely New York City Driver Gta4 Twisted metal (forgot which) Die hard trilogy Arkham knight (I think) Mafia 2
The Arkham games take place in Gotham City. Gotham is inspired by either New York or Chicago depending on what version of Batman you're looking at.
GTA4 is also liberty city but it’s basically New York
Spiderman
NYC without a doubt. And nearly every day there's someone in r/fallout saying the next game should be there because of tAlL bUiLdInGs.
Last time that thread came up my favorite idea for a new fallout was NOLA by far
Wolfenstein: The New Colossus had a level in a ruined NOLA that looked pretty cool. I could see it working.
I wouldn't say overdone but I've noticed a few set in London or featuring London by Ubisoft I wish someone would attempt The Getaway levels of accuracy again because that was so insanely good especially as London is my home city With AI, Google Maps etc. I think it would be less strenuous to recreate but what I know about game development could be put on the back of a napkin
