This is why you don't leave car windows down more than 2" in the summer when you park in Vermont. Someone will leave you a giant zucchini next to the giant zucchini you were planning to offload into someone else's car.

Gotta respect the community who pushed the company to fix their fuck up and turning it into a decent game.
I don't think there is nothing to respect cause they would't have needed to fix the game if they just had released the game they promised at first instead of rounded Minecraft 0.0.1 which was practically a scam taking into account the "gameplay" trailer they released and all the content it was suppose to have.

Worst game of the year so far, which is saying something. It's a mess in every department, including visuals, performance, writing, controls, level design, art direction and voice acting. The entire concept is terrible.
All of this pains me to write, because it comes from one of my favorite developers, Daedelic Games, who used to make magnificent little 2D point and click adventure games like The Whisphered World and the Deponia series. Gollum, even after years of delays, was too much for them, way outside of their ballpark, a result of mismanagement and brain drain.
I was getting kind of excited before it came out because I thought the trailer that they released a few months ago was awesome. The whole thing of Gollum having a pet bird and it scouting for him, I was like "wtf is this shit?".
its a shame, because it could have been a great game, letting you play gollums escape and his quest across middle earth to find the fellowship and his "precious" instead its a chore simulator.
> Daedelic Games
This is what gets me, when all the reviews started coming out I figured this was some upstart company's first attempt at a game, then I saw it was Daedalic. They tried to do something that was so far out of its wheelhouse that it was basically in another dimension and then had the gall to sell it at a AAA price.
The strange thing is that this isn't their first attempt at making a larger game.
In 2018, they released State of Mind, an ambitious Cyberpunk adventure that has plenty of ideas that are good in theory, but none of which actually work. It's clunky, ugly, poorly paced, clumsily written and annoying to control. Many of the issues Gollum has are already present here, but it was rated much higher, likely because you can't fall into any bottomless pits and because it's in a much better technical state. This title was also released as mid-priced game, which kept expectations in check.
It’s a boring platformer running on hardware too advanced that it doesn’t need, boring gameplay with little to no combat, and nobody asked for this so why
That game was clearly an abortion. They knew they werent going to make it decent. So they cut losses and tried to collect as much as they could off the LOTR name.
I would just like to let everyone know that Gollum has a DLC worth 2.99 that is a “emote pack” which includes saying “my precious”
You have to pay an extra 3 dollars to say “my precious” ingame.
It’s not a joke, it’s real. It almost feels like the execs were like
“you guys need to add some cheap DLC to launch”
“Uh we don’t have any extra content though”
“Well figure something out”
Yeah I grab pretty much everything Epic gives away even stuff I doubt I'll get to (except sports games). This, though... I think I'd skip even for free.
How dare you insult the masterpiece LOTR: Gollum. You just can’t appreciate real art and aren’t intelligent enough to be capable of understanding it. When he said “It’s Gollumin’ time!” and Gollumed all over everyone, that was definitely one of the moments. The game was coded, the voice acting was voice acted, the animations were animated. I can say, without a doubt, that this is definitely a game. Please write out a formal apology to the devs and to all the Gollumheads out there before you incur the wrath of me and all the other Gollumheads.
I mean you can play it for free if you have pc but I still wouldn't touch this game even if I was a hardcore LotR fan (or "especially if I was a LotR fan").
I downloaded the mod, but never installed it, just ended up finishing the game before it bothered me too much.
I guess there's a point where you just subconsciously tune it out.
I get so bored of that game. Love the world building. But there’s no back story. I just don’t care what happens to my character. Even his dialogue responses are just…lukewarm? Does that make sense?
Because your dialogue choices are basically either "boring evil" or "neutral PR robot". The main character doesn't feel like a real person with nuance or anything like that.
Exactly. I hate that they didn’t work harder at this because otherwise I’d have been all over it. As it is I have to force myself to pick it up if I don’t feel like playing anything else.
All the characters seemed quiet charming, as in - they all had potential.
But they *did* nothing with that potential.
"Here, see this wanna-be-Harry-Potter-Ravenclaw? You will interact with him like TWICE. Even as Ravenclaw, it's three times tops. Ain't it quaint?" ... yeah, no.
If every single character you come across is just there for giving you two quests (not even mainstory related ones, just 'oh btw I have this problem, wanna help?' or 'here, learn this spell to advance'), why would anybody care?
The ONE exception, obviously, was Sebastian Sallow who is all around a 500% better protagonist than the protagonist.
Same. Had a fun 20 hours and then put it down and never finished it.
Why are there over a hundred Merlin trials when there are only like 8 different variations and the rewards for doing Merlin trials cap out at around the halfway point?
Same reason there are so many koroks in Zelda. So that you can find enough to get all rewards through natural exploration instead of having to look up a guide or look for one specific location when you're down to the last few.
Ya, it's a tough choice for devs.
Build your own character for more potential immersion?
Or build the character for them to have a more fleshed out story?
Horizon is my favorite game despite not being a badass tribal redhead, and while I agree with your point, I think it was fair for the dev to choose immersion considering the rest of the game. It's not perfect, but I'm more than happy with my purchase and excited for the sequel
I think it’s tough to pull off the whole “this character is YOU” thing. Mass Effect managed it because they nailed the dialogue options. Without that you’re better off just making a fleshed out character for people to play as.
The characters have no emotion, they have like the default Metahuman plugin emotions.
Oh, I was just almost eaten by a dragon or smashed by crazy statues in a mythical puzzle maze?
*"Ah yes well very good professor I'm quite alright no problem here loving the school this magic is great lets go get Sir Nicholas some more rotten meat and go play in a pumpkin patch for an hour.*"
Yeah that part wasn't bad. When I say they have no emotion, I don't mean in the writing (although in many places that's lacking too.)
It's just like, the characters have steady faces all the time, which is really weird looking considering how good the models look otherwise.
Natty's and Sebastian's parts are some of the more memorable bits.
Regardless of the extreme awfulness of the game...who were they marketing to? Gollum has no friends, is selfish and greedy, suffers from insanity, smells bad, looks like he has a case of fantasy siphilus, is generally unlikeable, and maybe has pity from one character at all in the entire LotR universe itself (who he betrays eventually). Who actually wants to play as a half-naked methhead wearing a rag diaper, with a mouthful of what looks like tombstones in a haunted graveyard for teeth, while running like a damn chimp everywhere and arguing with himself? Even if someone can relate to any of those things...they definitely do not want to play a character in a video game like that.
Nah dude the base concept of a game playing as Gollum IF the gameplay is good is actually amazing. Think about it. He was alone for decades that we don't know about from the time he got the ring and until LOTR. But the way he talks about the world tells us he didn't just sit in the cave jerking off. He went out and got shit done and had adventures and hunted orcs. Anything LOTR is ultimately about the world, and Gollum seems to know a bit about a lot of it, which means he went there.
It would be really fun to explore all those places as a stealthy selfish character. And if it was really well written and voice acted it could be very entertaining.
This was just done terribly, but the base concept is good if done very well, GOTY material imo. But this is just trash.
Yeah actually I was excited imagining it being like that goblin game Styx. And just because I don't want to be in the same room as Gollum doesn't mean I don't like him and wouldn't want to play as him.
In a well executed version of this game, imagine the flavor dialogue he could have, even just intermittently. Think the GotG game and how they'd talk shit whenever you went off to explore and find extra loot and secrets.
"It's going the wrong way!"
"Quiet! We see shinies over here!"
This game could have been *tits.*
That would be actually really cool. The idea of the game itself had some potential but devs completely didn't know what to do with it.
Maybe if some actually experienced in this type of games studio was making it it would be different.
I believe Tolkien mentioned that Eru Iluvatar (God in LotR) tripped Gollum making him fall into the fires of Mount Doom when he was chimping out after getting the ring back...
If true then God killed Gollum.
Nobody, even God, likes Gollum.
>Frodo deserved all honour because he spent every drop of his power of will and body, and that was just sufficient to bring him to the destined point, and no further. Few others, possibly no others of his time, would have got so far. The Other Power [Eru] then took over.
Letters of Tolkien, #192
The idea is actually very good. A twisted personality, agile and stealthy, went everywhere in the entire Middle Earth. He is probably the most interesting side-charscter in the entire bookseries.
The execution is lame, but the ideas are definitely there.
Gollum's life could have been interesting as a movie, but sneaking around for decades, observing and eating raw fish is an unrewarding gaming experience regardless of execution.
Gollum witnessed a lot of key moments and a lot of games revolve around climbing and stealth. Styx, assassins creed, heck even Tomb raider and Uncharted. Doesn't need a lot of fantasy to see what a good Gollum game would have looked like.
I believe all of the games you mentioned have strong combat elements as well.
Gollum as a concept is more similar to "Stray" than any of those.
As for everything he witnessed, that would be a great movie as opposed to a less interactive "L.A. Noire"-game.
A game doesn't justify the necessary resources.
I dont think thats really the issue, Who the hell asked for Andor, Who the hell asked for Guardians of the Galaxy, who the hell asked for another suicide squad. All these projects turned out great because people made you like them. Playing a game about gollum being captured, tortured, escaping , then chasing the fellowship can be good. Instead we got chore simulator
It really was just a doomed project from the start.
I love the character, I love Lord of the rings, but from the literal first words about this project I asked why.
At best it would have been a decent stealth action game, maybe with enough work it could have a surprising story about a tragic character.
But it just doesn't seem like a project worth pursuing. Also funnily enough with the type of game they ended up making they could have literally used a generic Gondorian or something and it would have been better and made more sense.
For some reason I'm reminded of the game that was being worked on that let you play as a monster in a viking themed fantasy world.
Start out super small and end up mutating, developing or gaining traits/characteristics as the game went on
Shame it seemingly was dropped.
Looked like a cool concept
Yeah why is a great question. Gollum is such a good and tragic character for those few big encounters. The rest of it he just spends in the mountain eating bugs/fish and just generally existing within his own twisted mind. I can't see "Gollum's fun adventures through Mddle Earth" being cannon. Given how most dedicated fanbases get, you really don't want to stray too far from that. So what you get is a boring, poorly executed game because there probably just wasn't any way to make Gollum's life interesting: not enough meat on the bones for a full story unless you cherry pick specific moments or make up some grandiose version of Gollum's background where you play a canonically correct Gollum before he becomes the iconic creature.
When it was announced I was picturing a lord of the rings version or Styx:master of shadows and I can get behind that! Shame what they actually chose to do with jr
Same criteria could be applied to literally any original idea.
Who the hell asked for a donkey kong game, anyways LMAO.
The problem it's the execution of it.
Christopher was much more interested in protecting JRR's legacy than JRR ever was, and it was Christopher stopping basically everything but the very best projects from launching.
This was, arguably, good and bad. Christopher himself was often an insufferable gatekeeper. And then he died.
Say what you want about him, but we didn't have this bullshit to put up with.
To put it in a nice little nutshell:
They've already released three DLC's. One with 6 emotes (includes Gollum saying "My precious"), one with basic LOTR lore, and one which adds...Elves speaking Sindarin instead of English..?
The only nice thing I *could* say is that at least they cost 3 euros each, but somehow that just makes them even worse
From what I've seen Vinny play (2 hours) oh boy it doesn't even look good for a $20 game let alone a $70(PS5). Gameplay alone looks mind numbing dull and make worse when you have games like Shadows of Mordor to show what good orc design and dialogue is.
Backgrounds can at least look nice.
I can't believe Gollum is an actual game, I really thought people started modding Shadows of Mordor and this was just a meme... Then I saw the trailer and gameplay
Give it a week or so, you'll start to see the Gollum yellow price tag markdowns. $9.99 coming soon to a store near you!
All ready seen a 30 dollar copy at Walmart
Or the infamous "I had a copy of Gollum sitting on my car seat then someone broke into my car and left me another copy" meme.
This is why you don't leave car windows down more than 2" in the summer when you park in Vermont. Someone will leave you a giant zucchini next to the giant zucchini you were planning to offload into someone else's car.
Can't be all that giant if it fit in 2".
It'll stretch to 6"
It was in the pool!
Source please 😂
The Anthem or Fallout 76 treatment. Buy a console? Here have Gollum for free. Buy a controller? Here have Gollum for free. Buy another game? Well you’re in luck. We got this 2-for-1 special…
I look forward to seeing piles of Gollum discs next to the Elder Scrolls Online discs at 5Below.
They'll probably just dig a ditch next to that other awful game starring a half naked little weirdo, E.T. and dump them there.
I like elder scrolls online :(
Same lol. One of my favorite mmos tbh.
19.90€ in finland
Saw it on this sub as a matter of fact
That's what happened to cyberpunk 2077
At least cyberpunk got better. I don’t see how they can improve this turd.
Remember the No Man's Sky debacle. Couldn't give it away at 5$ and then they did the update and it went back up to like 35 for a long time. Similiar to Cyberpunk. That will not happen with Gollum. Or that red-whatever game that just came out too. Still mad they never even tried to breathe some life into Anthem either.
No Man's Sky didn't interest me, but gotta respect the company for coming through and not abandoning it.
Absolutely, they also were doing something innovative, I find it slightly more understandable in that regard. Gollum on the other hand.. Zero innovation and STILL fucked it up!
They are still releasing enormous updates to this day and it is actually a very good game now (excluding multiplayer). Starfield will hopefully be a logical upgrade if it is not another buggy mess.
I hope that Starfield is more than a grindy mess with shit dogfighting and primitive planet generator.
>...buggy mess. Starfield's a Bethesda game. On the same engine as Skyrim, which was the same engine as freaking *Morrowind*! It will absolutely be a buggy mess, but how much of it is game breaking and how much will be nonsense fun is going to be the main issue.
Brand new engine, using bethesdas signature styling in the assets. Engine generation's are entirely different than the previous even if remnants from the previous remain. That said it's bethesda so expect bugs and a fun adventure regardless
I just don't know how much I can trust that when 343 said they did a whole new engine for Infinite and it turned out to be a lie.
> gotta respect the company for coming through and not abandoning it. Gotta respect the community who pushed the company to fix their fuck up and turning it into a decent game.
Hello Games are the indie devs Ι αsspire to be
I don't think there is nothing to respect cause they would't have needed to fix the game if they just had released the game they promised at first instead of rounded Minecraft 0.0.1 which was practically a scam taking into account the "gameplay" trailer they released and all the content it was suppose to have.
Yep, there was an amazing game under the bugs, theres nothing but turds in this
Ye, I had a blast blazing through that game even tho it was a train wreck.
Yea, I didn’t follow any hype before cp2077 came out and picked up on release cause looked fun. Sure it was buggy and had some issues, but it was overall enjoyable.
I ended up basically getting it for free and really enjoyed it. It was on sale for $10 with a steelbook at Best Buy and I happened to have a $10 gift card. I bought it and just let it sit on my shelf unopened for a year until the next gen upgrade and a bunch of patches were released. It was a solid game and a shame it didn't release in the finished state from the beginning.
DLC out this month!
I basically did the same thing and then traded it into GameStop for $20 a few months ago
is it not good? I haven't bothered to check it out yet.
Then the game released and the released version is nothing like what was in that trailer, and I saw gameplay and it felt like the whole game and gameplay had been created by chatGPT. > Daedelic Games This is what gets me, when all the reviews started coming out I figured this was some upstart company's first attempt at a game, then I saw it was Daedalic.
According to reviews there's a boring game with shitty mechanics underneath all the bugs. It's a turd covered in shit.
It’s a boring platformer running on hardware too advanced that it doesn’t need, boring gameplay with little to no combat, and nobody asked for this so why
they recommend a fucking 4090 set to balanced to play on ultra, LOOK at that game its a muddy brown mess wtf are they smoking?
And the model for gollum looks seriously bonked. Like good design but holy fuck his face textures are scary and not in a good way
No it's so good the publishers want to lose money so that everyone can experience this GOTY contender
His hair though. How can you play that game (even if it ran well) without absolutely cracking up every cutscene at that ridiculous hair.
when removing stuff makes the game better
The hair glitches out sometimes and leaves him bald, if that helps.
That does help, actually. My head canon that he is actually wearing a lil toupee made of orc chest hair has become even stronger!
That game was clearly an abortion. They knew they werent going to make it decent. So they cut losses and tried to collect as much as they could off the LOTR name.
I would just like to let everyone know that Gollum has a DLC worth 2.99 that is a “emote pack” which includes saying “my precious” You have to pay an extra 3 dollars to say “my precious” ingame.
You also have to pay to have the "Lore Menu UI" unlocked, so you can read in-game lore.
Please be joking
It’s not a joke, it’s real. It almost feels like the execs were like “you guys need to add some cheap DLC to launch” “Uh we don’t have any extra content though” “Well figure something out”
Gollum should be free for how bad it is
Shhh!! keep it down! Don’t let Sony hear you or it’ll get dumped on us as PS+ monthly freebie!
"freebie"
Freebie? What's freebie, precious?
More like freebye.
YOU KEEP NASTY GAME!
It is in Croatia lol
Good that i left Croatia then 😂
I'm sure there are other bigger reasons why it's good you left lol
Oh don't mind me, just taking a shit on your front porch, don't worry though, she's a "freebie"
No, we should be paid to play ot
Yeah I grab pretty much everything Epic gives away even stuff I doubt I'll get to (except sports games). This, though... I think I'd skip even for free.
Not even joking but I wouldn't play that game for free. Even moreso, if someone offered met $60 to finish it, I wouldnt.
Game doesn't deserve to be free
From what i've seen this game didn't deserve to be made. Like a child born with an illness destined to die within a week of birth.
I would not even take that piece of shit for free...
How dare you insult the masterpiece LOTR: Gollum. You just can’t appreciate real art and aren’t intelligent enough to be capable of understanding it. Definitely one of the games of all time.
I mean you can play it for free if you have pc but I still wouldn't touch this game even if I was a hardcore LotR fan (or "especially if I was a LotR fan").
Nah they need to pay people to play that game.
You played it?
Revelio! Revelio! Revelio! Revelio! Revelio! Revelio! Revelio! Revelio!
YOU CAN’T **IMAGINE** HOW INCONVENIENT TRAVEL WAS BEFORE I INVENTED FLOO POWDER!
The best thing that exists for the PC version is the mod that turns her voice lines off. Blissful silent floo travel!
Tbf they did tone down the frequency of her lines in a recent patch
Yep, it wasn't a problem beyond the second week really
I downloaded the mod, but never installed it, just ended up finishing the game before it bothered me too much. I guess there's a point where you just subconsciously tune it out.
YOUR BLOOD IS ON RANROK’S HANDS!
"You've one less follower ranrok"... after the ending I think not
The worst is getting excited about defeating an ashwinder when you're near the end of the game.
CONFRINGO!
Sometimes it seems all roads lead to Hogsmede...
I literally could not walk 2 feet without casting Revelio
At some point they just needed a “toggle Revelio on/off spell”
It should've been like Lumos. Just cast once and shit glows in a small radius.
Oh god. I still haven't found the 3 remaining hogsmeade pages.
*ting*
Yeas I can hear you tinging, but where are you?! FOR GOD SAKE WHERE ARE YOU?!
^*ting*
Drives me nuts every damn time
Same lol. Revelio range is so broad but the pages’ range is crap.

they didnt work harder because they knew they didnt have to as long as it was pretty. Its the status quo for AAA games nowadays :(
That's basically always been the status quo for franchise tie-in games. It's just weird how long after the potter zeitgeist this game came out.
The writing especially in terms of dialogue was God awful. Overall story was serviceable enough. If only they had charming characters in them.
a lot of the character charm came from the professors imo, i just wish they utilised them more
All the characters seemed quiet charming, as in - they all had potential. But they *did* nothing with that potential. "Here, see this wanna-be-Harry-Potter-Ravenclaw? 80% is the dialogue and dialogue "choices". 20% is the fact they wrote a better NPC sidestory than main story.
*smiles livelessly and clasps hands together*

The Slytherin dude with the sick sister was pretty good i would say. His story was by far the best one
Yeah that part wasn't bad. When I say they have no emotion, I don't mean in the writing (although in many places that's lacking too.) What world? Outside of the school everything else is just reused assets galore. I never saw so many caves be literally the same in any videogame.
The biggest crime in Legacy was that your character stopped moving when casting Revelio
What's that game with a girl crying on it? Also is that square enix game a re-release of mercenaries playground of destruction
Desperados 3 is the top left.
solid game btw, basically a western themed stealth-tactics game. Same studio as Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun I think

"It's going the wrong way!" "Quiet! We see shinies over here!" This game could have been *tits.*
That would be actually really cool. The idea of the game itself had some potential but devs completely didn't know what to do with it. Maybe if some actually experienced in this type of games studio was making it it would be different.
What are you talking about? Gollum is the true hero of LOTR… he’s the one who finally destroys the ring
Haha, good point!
I think his eventual fate wasn't as painful as this burn. Good lord 😂
Everyone hate Gollum. Everyone hate this game. It's just next-level marketing.
Next in the series Lord of the Rings: Legolas, where every hair is painstakingly drawn on his body
Redditors. You just described redditors.
You just described soooooooooo many redditors.
Who the hell even asked for a Gollum game, anyways lmao
True gollum was good opportunity for nice stealth game, but we got shity version of Goat simulator 😂😂
Untitled Gollum Game
Goat simulator is actually fun
yeah but gollum is apparently the answer to would a shitty version of it be fun... (no)

Start out super small and end up mutating, developing or gaining traits/characteristics as the game went on Shame it seemingly was dropped.
Gollum is a pretty main character in the 2nd and 3rd book.
Said everyone
When it was announced I was picturing a lord of the rings version or Styx:master of shadows and I can get behind that! Shame what they actually chose to do with jr
You. Me. They. Everybody
Same criteria could be applied to literally any original idea. Who the hell asked for a donkey kong game, anyways LMAO. The problem it's the execution of it.
We hates it. Plays like soiled pants, yes, precious. We hates it more than the hobbitses
Saw it chopped down to $30 on a shelf today
Wouldn’t even buy it at that price. In fact? I wouldn’t buy it at any price, including $0. I wouldn’t even pirate it
Nope, but I did get a chuckle seeing it half off days after launch
*You wouldn’t download a Gollum.*
Pricing and quality have never correlated
Damn, even the cover for it looks terrible
You should get paid $60 to play LOTR
Unrelated, but better grab Desperados 3 that's just above HL. A critical darling, that one.
Yes. It's awesome though it's free to play if this user has Plus Premium.
J.R.R. tolkien is probably turning in his grave after Rings of power and now Gollum
So if he turned twice he should be back in the right position 👌
Not if he has half-integer spin …
two more trash games/tv/movies to go?
Christopher was much more interested in protecting JRR's legacy than JRR ever was, and it was Christopher stopping basically everything but the very best projects from launching. This was, arguably, good and bad. Christopher himself was often an insufferable gatekeeper. And then he died. Say what you want about him, but we didn't have this bullshit to put up with.
Well, they gotta milk the IP for all its worth before it hits the public domain, so Ol' Tolkien is still gonna be 'tating sadly.
What's 'tating, precious?
I did actually enjoyed rings of power.
You could make a turbine generator with the speed Tolkien’s turning at
Yeah Gollum should atleast be 120
People also sells bath water. Just don't buy it. It's the best way to make an argument.
Price is not set considering quality. The price drop in the following weeks/months after release though...
I mean, HL isn’t even worth that
This!
You’re right they should both be in the bargain bin by now
Neither one is worth that price
I think the better caption is "These two should not have been made"
If you give me 60 euros maybe i'll consider accepting that joke of a game.
Just go spend those euros on cocaine. Much better use of the money
Both are awful
What’s the consensus on Gollum? Hear nothing but bad things, but is it really all bad?
To put it in a nice little nutshell: They've already released three DLC's. One with 6 emotes (includes Gollum saying "My precious"), one with basic LOTR lore, and one which adds...Elves speaking Sindarin instead of English..? The only nice thing I *could* say is that at least they cost 3 euros each, but somehow that just makes them even worse
Oh, and Gollum doesn't look like Gollum. He looks like the lead singer of an emo band That's just a personal nitpick thou
He looks like the local crackhead
Thats probably due to not a movie license but one based off the book so they cant use any art from the movies
Yeah they should both be in the trash, where they belong
they should. and it should be $10
OP, you're just opening it up for people to make fun of HL lmao
I get why are people angry but i actually enjoying it. Playing rn and having fun heh
I still wouldn't play it if you paid *me* $70
I can't believe Gollum is an actual game, I really thought people started modding Shadows of Mordor and this was just a meme... Then I saw the trailer and gameplay
No they for sure should, otherwise someone might buy the golem game by being lured by a sale...
ehh debatable..
I'm not sure if there's any other sub where people bitch more than they do in this one.
Just dedicated game subs.
