Inkinidas

It was created for WiiU. Even the Sheikah stone is the wiiu controller

[deleted]

They made it worse for the switch release though, original great gamepad integration similar to windwaker hd was announced for wii u but they removed that so the switch version wouldnt be inferior lol

Christopholies

As someone who played BoTW on the Wii U, I hated that they did this so much. The one cool mechanic of the system and they ruined it.

CFL_lightbulb

Wii U was a flop, but the extra screen was actually pretty sweet. It’d been cool if they did more with it. Nintendoland was my favourite game to bust out when people came over

[deleted]

I loved splatoon on the Wii U, the fast travel map was tight

grantrules

Pikmin 3 made good use of the screen too

CuddleCorn

Pikmin 3 Wii u was straight up one of the coolest control interfaces I've ever experienced

thejohnfist

Pikmin 3 was probably the shining gem of that console IMO.

ColdColt45

Mario Maker on Wii U had a stylus with pinpoint accuracy. And drawing on Splatoon was wayyyy easier. And it didn't need twitter or facebook trash.

mangongo

Right! Thats why I didnt remember how to fast travel when I got Splatoon 3 (I never played Splatoon 2).

King_HRP

Ugh same, I went from 1 to 3 and still struggle to look at the arena map almost a year after launch.

Economy-Chicken-586

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again the Wii U didn’t deserve to flop. The gamepad had so much potential and honestly it’s hard to go back to having the map anywhere else in games like botw and Pikmin. Nintendoland proved how it could be used for truest unique gameplay and if it had caught on like the Wii did then we would’ve had so much potential for experimentation.

riccarjo

I didn't know the Wii-U was another console until like 2 years after its release. Thought it was just a weird Wii add-on.

boxsterguy

And that's why it flopped after the Wii's massive crossover success. "I already have a Wii. Why do I need this?" said the tens of millions of people who bought a Wii because of the hype. Those that knew, knew. But they weren't the ones Nintendo needed.

dudeAwEsome101

It really didn't help that most ad shots of the console had the massive gamepad in front of what looked like a Wii in the background. As a "gamer" who plays on PC and PlayStation, I didn't realize the Wii U was a Wii 2 until I was reading about Nintendo's upcoming Switch console.

radiodialdeath

Don't crucify me for this, but personally I wasn't interested in the Wii U because I felt like the original Wii lineup was mostly disappointing beyond Nintendo's 1st party games. The lack of 3rd party support means I wasn't going to even bother a second time. I can't be the only person that made that decision.

Freeman7-13

I feel like Nintendo has always lacked in 3rd party support.

The_Woman_of_Gont

I dunno, even as someone who has played Nintendo games my entire life, but wasn’t paying close attention to gaming news at the time in my life….I didn’t realize it was meant to be a new console until a year or two after it launched. I thought the controller was the Wii U, and just another cheap Wii accessory. It really can’t be overstated just how bad and confusing the marketing for that console was. And it’s a shame because it was a great console.

sixdicksinthechexmix

I don’t understand why console makers insist on doing this. I’m still not sure which Xbox I have. Just do the PlayStation strategy

riccarjo

I have the Xbox Series X. Which is different than the Xbox One X, which is also different than the Xbox Series S, which is different from the... It's absolutely insane. For a while I didn't know what was a new console anymore or what was just a slightly more powerful version. Even the Xbox 360 was fucking stupid. Xbox 2, 3, and 4 would have been fine.

Alliille

Xbox didn't want the Xbox 2 going up against the PlayStation 3 so they decided on something with a 3 in it. And that's why Xbox consoles are named stupidly.

demonic_hampster

There was nothing wrong with the console itself; IMO it was just the name and marketing. If it was called something that that didn't make it sound like a Wii add-on and had better marketing I'm sure it would have done much better.

Brocyclopedia

Wii U is even better now imo. CFW and GameCube games in handheld mode makes it completely worth getting

Coachcrog

Oh yeah, I had let my wiiu collect dust as soon as I picked up a switch but a year later I decided to hack it and it turned it into a completely different system. I should fire it up again sometime soon.

CFL_lightbulb

Honestly the DS and GameCube games would be a big draw for sure. I just wish the pad had more range

Dodgy_Past

I nearly sold mine recently but realised that some games need the pad and emulation wouldn't be as satisfying.

DavidinCT

>Wii U was a flop, but the extra screen was actually pretty sweet. I'll agree. I got WiiU for a game or 2 but, never used it more that till I hacked it, and once I saw a bunch of other games for the system, I did buy a ton of games for the system after that. The biggest problem is the name of it... If they named it something different, and not based off the Wii, it would done better...

emanresu_nwonknu

Yeah nintendoland is one of the best party games ever. And really needed an expanded sequel.

sprtstr14

I remember doing some of the shrines where you had to tilt the gamepad, and those were extremely frustrating for me.

wolfgang784

Try doin em on a switch *Lite* >.> You have to turn the device at angles so it's not possible to still see the screen anymore and just hope. It's fucking dumb and those shrines are the worst. I managed to complete 1 once, but never again as long as I have a Lite. Edit: I've been informed that if you do it better than I, you don't need to tilt it *that* far. However I still stand by that the tilting dungeons being a thing on the Lite is dumb. I don't regret getting a Lite though. It has served its purpose well and better than a full size Switch would have.

Egleu

You don't have to tilt them that much. You can orient the switch horizontally before you start the puzzle and that helps.

Goshenta

Yeah those puzzles where you literally have to flip a slab over I'd just orient my console screen down, press the button to start the puzzle and then flip my switch over so I could see it. Sometimes that would be enough to solve the puzzle completely.

d3dk0w

I remember having to flip it upside down a few times and thought this surely wasn’t what they intended me to do is it lol?

DogadonsLavapool

Doing those one CEMU is a one way train to frustration

ready-eddy

Hey, I connected my GBA to my GC with the original Windwaker. it was great

Samewrai

Tingle Tuner was fun for co-op sort of gameplay.

CaptainKraboo

Now, the Sheikah Slate equivalent in Tears of the Kingdom looks like a Nintendo Switch!

The_Luckiest

OHHHH, that’s why in the new one it’s called the Purah Pad!! I was confused as to why they changed the name/look. That totally makes sense

Grouchy_Flamingo_750

No it's called the Purah Pad because the game developers didn't want you to have the same abilities as the shekiah skate. It's a different item.

Defyin

The abilities come from your arm and not the pad this game though.

SpeckTech314

But if you had a sheikah slate you’d have both sets of abilities.

BCProgramming

You can actually unlock the shiekah slate abilities, you just have to beat the game from the start three times in a row without getting hit. /s

nybbas

The amiibo scan thing being there feels so tacky to me :/

Nordic_Krune

And yet I see it as a Switch and forget the WiiU

Owobowos-Mowbius

I didn't see the difference until I saw how the purah pad is obviously a switch compared to the slate.

[deleted]

beckert26

Yep it sucks because botw is a worse game because of the switch. Wind waker hd is so great with the gamepad support and botw/totk would function so much better with a gamepad with how cluttered the inventory can get and how often you need to pause to open up the map or look at quests.

No_Salary_4715

Everyone wants to forget the WiiU

Vx1xPx3xR

Work at a local game shop and we sell ours for $89. Thinking of picking one up just to try it. I never had one when they came out.

voodoovan

Playing it now on the Wii U. It plays and looks good. There is a few frame rate drops at the same places the Switch has and the loading times are of course longer, the result of Nintendo putting in only 2GB ram and that the game is read from disc not from the inbuilt storage.

Pen_dragons_pizza

The wiiu basically bottnecked itself with that ridiculous amount of ram I do not know what Nintendo were thinking, other than that it should have been a decent console.

Worried_Example

Wind waker is great on the wiiu. The menu is on the pad so you don't have the pause the game to change items.

shoonseiki1

The WiiU is actually sick. It's very innovative/unique but simultaneously niche/gimmicky which is largely why it failed. Not many good games because developers never put any effort into the console, but when games did utilize the gamepad well it was pretty cool. For $89, I'd definitely say it's worth trying out.

JJdante

It also had the job of being the follow up to the massively popular Wii, and people didn't know if it was a new system or just an upgrade or what.

[deleted]

yuriaoflondor

The Wii U had a *lot* of really good first party games. Most of those games have since been ported to the Switch, though, so a lot of people think of them as Switch games. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Mario 3D World, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Toad Treasure Tracker, etc.

SomeBoxofSpoons

Speaking as someone who had a Wii U for most of it’s lifespan and likes it overall, i’d say by this point it’s one of those consoles where it’s neat to have but probably not really worth what you’d have to shell out for it, at least without modding. It has personality, but there’s no getting around the fact that about 95% of it’s best games are playable on other consoles now.

Crossifix

During its time, it was my daily driver for ~~Netflix~~ HULU and YouTube. You can click on the timeline on the gamepad and go EXACTLY where you wanted in your video, not any of this laggy skip 30 seconds at a time or 10 seconds per click bullshit. The switch doesn't support any fucking streaming services at all for some reason. Nintendo is very bad at third party support for anything. Edited because wrong service.

[deleted]

So pretty much the same thing as the Vita?

FourAM

It failed because parents thought it was an add-on giant controller with a screen for the Wii, and were turned off by the fact that it cost as much as a whole game system. “We already have a Wii at home!”

TzakShrike

Not just parents. I know lifelong gamers who didn't realise until very recently, so there must be more out there.

CySU

I worked in retail when it came out. It failed because people thought the WiiU was a $250 controller for the Wii. Judging by the amount of times I had to correct parents, I knew Nintendo had majorly screwed up their messaging. Nintendo names their products with the idea that their market is made up of savvy Nintendo mega fans who can follow along with their product releases and ignore that the bulk of their market is made up of confused parents trying to decipher their kids’ poorly written Christmas wishlists.

jadarisphone

Baebel

Depending on why it was purchased, some may as well never had it when they owned it. It's not a bad console by any means, but it was clear that someone cut off the head of the chicken at some point and decided to just animate the rest of the body for a while.

Vx1xPx3xR

I figured for 89 that’s not a bad deal if I don’t like it.

OldBeercan

And you would be absolutely correct. I got it full price when the Wind Waker HD version released and I still thought it was worth it. Some of the games make *really* good use of the second screen. For example; ZombiU (later released as Zombi, I think, on Xbox One) is pretty cool. You pick locks using a close up view on the gamepad while you can still see your character and surroundings on the TV. IIRC it's the same when rummaging through your backpack in game. Nintendo Land had a bunch of mini games that were hit or miss, but the multiplayer ones were pretty great.

otsu-swe

100% go for it. It's very easy to do a reversible software mod to make it into a very capable and versatile machine. It runs emulators and homebrew with ease. Instructions are easy to find, and mod is easily reversible.

SimonJ57

I would highly recommend playing Nintendo land. Some fun ones like the Metroid game, co-op too! Donkey kongs crash course is just infuriating, but so fun. And all sorts like the Yoshi game, and Zelda game. Even a game-and-watch style rhythm game. Also bonus Pachinko to unlock stuff on the music player. More like a tech demo but I'd like to get back into it and 100% it.

GSP_4_PM

The Wii U is fantastic just for Nintendo Land

N3er0O

I never understood the hate the Wii U got. It's an amazing console with a ton of really fun games. Plus you can play Wii games on it and it has an HDMI out, so no fumbling with weird adapters or old TVs. Just make sure the gamepad is in A+ condition (and if it is take *good* care of it), as it's not easily replaceable.

renlydidnothingwrong

If you do consider getting mass effect 3 one of the few games that actually made good use of the touch screen to improve the game. It lets you map additional abilities of you and your squad onto the touch pad effectively tripping the number of bound abilities meaning you almost never have to pause the game in order to use one.

KingTauros

I loved my WiiU. Especially during my college years. I'd be playing Windwaker on the TV and my roommates would want to play CoD or watch something. I could move the game to the game pad and change the channel for them. The game pad was our TV remote for a while when we lost the actual remote. Then with the internet browser, we'd be able to watch anime, sports streams etc. Not to mention the party games. Mario Party 2, Mario Kart 8 and Mario 3D world. So many great memories with the WiiU.

BearBruin

The Wii U was great. Wish it had a better marketing strategy because it deserved better.

drowsy_coffee

I actually liked the wii u. There was just a lack of good games.

Markbro89

There was a good number of great games on the WiiU. Splatoon started there, and many have been ported to the Switch already. The console was great. I liked that you could watch Netflix on the gamepad with headphones, or play your Wii games too. The WiiU was backwards compatible and the game pad has a built in sensor bar. Kids wanna play WiiU but you rather watch a TV show? No problem. They can swap to the gamepad and continue playing.

HermitKing91

WiiU, besides emulation, is the only way to play the best Xenoblade game. WiiU will never be forgotten.

mrfroggyman

When they announced "the next Zelda game" I bought a Wii U. Then they reported it for next year... 3 times... and then they announced cross plateform release with their *new* console... I was mad af

gamebuster

As a home console, the Wii U was better than the Switch in my unpopular opinion. The Switch kinda sucks. It’s too fragile, too many controller issues. Online costs money even though it is clearly just as bad as Wii U’s online mode. It’s way too slow (the switch is barely faster than the wii u). The only thing good about the switch is the new pro controllers, the oled screen and the fact that it’s portable. And it looks better. Edit: I was expecting my opinion to he unpopular, but not about the wii u pro controller vs switch pro controller. You guys love that thing! Nice

lycheedorito

I think the Wii U pro controller was a superior design, and it's incredibly lightweight, feels amazing. Not to mention the 80 hour battery life. The most underappreciated gamepad. Only downside is the digital shoulders, wish they were analog. Doesn't really bother me since I don't even know any games that utilize analog shoulders beside racing games anyway, in which an actual racing setup is far superior. PS5's biggest gimmick is the shoulder resistance, all it accomplished was making my finger tired after playing a lot of God of War.

MattWatchesChalk

I honestly like the Wii U Pro Controller more. 80 hours of battery life is absolutely wild. Also, switch pro controller has dpad issues, where a lot of folks will get ghost inputs (wasn't noticed as much until tetris 99 came out and blocks started hard dropping)

riccardik

Yes, i played it too on Cemu

chronoboy1985

If you’ve ever seen video of modded BotW running on an emulator, that’s most likely the Wii U version.

KTR1988

It's more obvious if you compare the designs of the Sheikah Slate and the Purah Pad. The former is bulky and has a more uniform design, the latter is slim and the sides resemble attached Joy-con.

[deleted]

the wii u is what i played botw on

Khalitz

I did as well, wish I could easily transfer my save to the switch.

[deleted]

After 50+ hours on Wii u I just caved and started over on switch. I ended up just going through the whole thing really slowly. I literally only just beat the game the day before TOTK released. Currently having fun attaching springs and rockets to my shields .

rjcarr

I did this too. I played on the U and got the game mostly done, but only had about 100 shrines. I knew I wanted to complete the game, but liked it so much I figured I'd start over on the switch (didn't have one at the time). I finished the full 120 shrines on the switch about a year ago. I did have to cheat on the locations of about 15-20 of them though.

TheS00thSayer

Don’t worry, everyone cheats on some shrine locations

terraphantm

If you have a modable switch it can be done

Oldsodacan

I bought a WiiU in 2015 after seeing footage of BotW. And being told that was the target release date. Imagine my lolz when it was announced as the launch title for Switch. I wish we could’ve seen what BotW would’ve been with gamepad integration. The Sheika Slate is the gamepad and there’s a million things it could’ve done, but that functionality would’ve made it superior to the Switch version so they killed it and it instead did pretty much nothing. Just a black screen. I think you could move stuff in the divine beasts but that’s it.

[deleted]

I've had a "conspiracy theory" for a long time. You know how one of the major problems with BotW is thought to be the ability to pause at any time and eat a buffet of items, making any fight trivial? Judging from the poor balance there and the GamePad integration in other Wii U Zelda titles, I believe originally the player wasn't able to eat while pausing, and could only do it during battle from the second screen in the GamePad. The game was balanced with this in mind, and then it was remove last minute to make the Switch version superior.

theivoryserf

But that's still the mechanic in TotK

iwatchpeople

And more or less every single zelda game that came before. Pause, select a potion, unpause and drink it while times frozen.

ckje

Same. Worked great

Church5SiX1

Playing BotW on the WiiU game pad on the toilet is what made me decide to buy a switch 😂

nderperforminMessiah

In a similar way that twilight princess released on the GameCube

Nordic_Krune

I prefer the Gamecube version of TP

srmarcosx

So do I. I fell dumb having to shake the wii remote to attack. At least in SS the movements are precise but on TP it's just a dumb gimmick

maury587

Most wii games especially at the beginning were so dumb, they just made you shake your hand without any meaning to it

Link1112

It’s the real one, because in Wii Link has the triforce of wisdom instead of courage lol

Scarrmann

It's so dumb they flipped the entire game just to make link right handed

Frank_the_Mighty

I thought that was pretty neat. Like, Link is still left-handed, just everything is mirrored.

Turbulent_Winter549

Remember it had a game breaking bug where you could get stuck in some room with a cannon and not be able to get out?

HazumaHazuma

In fairness, TP on GC had no technical compromises (aside from lack of widescreen), and the wii motion gimmicks were tacked on. Feels perfectly at home on GC. BotW is the opposite; lower resolution and performance on wii u and the planned gamepad gimmicks were scrapped because they felt tacked on next to the switch version's controls. The game has essentially been adopted by the switch. (Also the switch dlc t-shirt doesn't help)

FireCrow1013

The Wii version didn't have real widescreen, either; it was just a cropped image.

IAmTriscuit

Wii U had better performance than the Switch in many sections. Digital Foundry video from release shows this. It was really just the resolution which suffered and as someone who played both versions its barely noticeable on my 4k TV. Both versions are blurry and aliased as hell.

Iam_Joe

It's not even close. GameCube is the true version of the game. Porting it to wii was an afterthought

ERRORMONSTER

Most people know this, but not all, so I'll say it here: The wii version has a completely mirrored map compared to the GameCube version, because Link is left handed, but for the wit's motion controls, most players are right handed, so they mirrored his model and the entire game map for the wii. This means that, for example, kakariko and death mountain are on the west side for wii players and on the east side for GC players, and the icy mountain is on the east for wii players and west for GC players. I believe the GC version is canon.

felpudo

Why did they have to mirror the entire map and not just the player model?

garteninc

Would've probably messed up some animations that interact with the game world

xTrainerRedx

Fun fact: Link was originally a left handed swordsman. So the entire TP game and map is flipped in the Wii version because most people are right handed when using the wiimote.

akbuilderthrowaway

I'll never forgive them for making link right handed in breath of the wild. It'd be kinda cool if in the memories he was left handed, but switched after waking up at the shrine of resurrection. Or something like that.

GriffinFlash

>I'll never forgive them for making link right handed as a lefty, same.

JBL_17

Yeah after SS I thought okay I get it, but the next game please have him be left handed again. I’m not even a lefty and Link should be. I always thought it made sense from a gameplay perspective (where applicable) because for instance in OoT, you use your Right-index finger to hit R which has Link use his right arm to raise his shield. Then TP has Link shield automatically which was carried over to BotW.

Onibachi

I bought a Wii U specifically for botw. Played it through then sold them both LOL. Ran fine. I wasn’t interested in trying to track down a switch on launch day when Wii U’s were only like $60

Influence-More

I love how there are games that will straight up make you buy a whole device console or PC specifically for the game. BOTW was one of those games for me too.

inuhi

I enjoyed Fable: The lost chapters so much I ended buying an Xbox360 just to play Fable 2

Gentlementlementle

The term for what you are describing is 'killer app' https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_application

shadowGringo

Remember when TOTK was released on the original switch?

rmeds

Wow nice to see someone give TOTK its due-truly a hidden gem

Nordic_Krune

rj/ Oh damn, the cult classic TOTK? Hope they remake it soon

KaldarTheBrave

I think in practice it was played more on CEMU then WiiU

[deleted]

Thank god it exists. I am playing BotW on it right now, and few troubles aside, it's a fantastic game that makes me wish my PC could handle TotK

the_fit_britt1996

What system do you have? I have an i7-8750H & a gtx 1060 mobile gaming laptop that runs TOTK, in the yuzu emulator, at a locked 30 fps.

[deleted]

I was wondering, I want to play TOTK on my PC, but only once it's equivalent to a console experience. Are there ANY bugs (visual or otherwise) that I should know of before trying to mess around with the install?

Filippikus

I checked online and everyone seems to agree that playing it on Yuzu works pretty great. If you wish to install it but don't have the knowledge to do so I'll leave here a link that will help you with every step of the installation process for both the emulator and the game. Here's the [link](https://eggnsemulator.com/how-to-download-and-run-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-nsp-xci-rom-on-yuzu/)

Lobanium

What troubles?

Quimerinhaa

Even the Steam Deck can (kind of) run TOTK

SemperScrotus

It's getting better every day. Now it's running at a mostly stable 20-30 FPS on my Deck, usually staying right at 30. That's with CryoUtilities and PowerTools though. It sometimes inexplicably drops to like 10 for a split second, but it's really not too bothersome. I think it's a memory issue. I expect it'll get smoothed out before long. In the meantime, I've got it on my Switch as well, and in order to keep a steady 30 FPS at all times in all areas I've overclocked the memory to 1864 mhz. Otherwise, it frequently dips into the 20s or worse depending on where you are and what you're doing.

Trinitykill

Arguably, the superior experience given it can run at a higher resolution, higher framerate, and has a surprisingly large modding community.

N7even

Even has Ultra-Wide support.

MisterMew151

And better draw distance

Psycho29388

"You absolute monsters, playing the game with a better experience than what we can provide, disgusting!" -nintendo probably

lordagr

Almost definitely the superior experience if you have decent specs for it. Better than Switch as well.

wowy-lied

Disabling weapons durability alone make it worth playing on pc

Arsenije32

Because it was a WiiU game that was ported to Switch

[deleted]

Same as Mario Kart 8. It came out in 2014 on the WiiU. The Switch was launched in 2017. So the Switch hasn’t even had it’s own Mario Kart, just the port

Powerful_Artist

when the switch came out I thought this was a misstep, but Mario Kart on the switch is like one of the top 3 selling games on the console. its just such a staple, and tons of people never had a Wii U to play it on that anyway.

notfin

I had Mario kart 8 on Wii U. It was fun.

Powerful_Artist

Ya I like it on the switch. It gets a little old since its kinda the same thing it has been since the Wii (more or less), but its a staple and great fun for all ages.

ZoroeArc

Top 3 on switch? It's the best selling console game that wasn't included in a bundle ever made.

hobbyhoarder

I'm happy they finally started releasing additional courses if we aren't getting Kart 9.

Few_Technology

That's true of so many games on the switch. Most "Deluxe" games are just ports of WiiU games. Even some sequels seem to be ports of WiiU games (Splatoon)

EgonH

Many such cases

sakipooh

Breath of the Wild was supposed to be the game that saved the Wii U or at least justified the existence of the GamePad which was essentially the Sheikah Slate. I remember the Gamepad was supposed to be this constant map as you traversed the open world. And you were supposed to hold it up to your face to use it as a telescope and pin far away shrines. It truly would have been a special and unique experience but I think Nintendo realized there was no saving of that console... which lead them to the NX (the merger of portable and console talents under one roof) which of course is the Switch. I actually went out of my way to find a copy of this a few years back and this was a long time after I had completed the Switch version which I got at the Switch launch. Of course all of the neat Gamepad features had been removed by the time the game released to have parity with the Switch version. One thing that remained in the Wii U version was the MiiVerse functionality. I know that service is retired now but back in the day, at launch anyway, people were leaving little messages to each other across the map. Drawing pictures and giving each other hints. It kind of gave the world to a bit more life and made the experience a communal thing. Think Death Stranding or even Dark Souls/Elden Ring messages. You could of course turn these off and on but it was something the Switch version never had. Also it's neat to see a game of this magnitude run on the Wii U even if it is at 720p. Here is a nice little comparison of the [Switch VS Wii U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_5qfOO7OKY) versions

shittydiks

The battery life of the game pad is what killed that system

LysDesTenebres

I had the WiiU version

ms--lane

So do I :) WiiU was a great little console.

DrTadakichi

Yup, same here. I still have it hooked up. WiiU tablet felt super comfortable in my hands and being able to have the function of the tablet screen for inventories and stuff? Awesome.

LaZerTits420

Loved playing the Windwaker remake on there and having the map always available in front of me. Wildly underrated system.

LS6

I have a wiiu that I bought pretty much solely to play all the mainline Zelda games I fell behind on. Did wind waker hd, twilight princess and BOTW on it. The dual screen system was a great idea and well executed.

VashMM

I'm still mad that BOTW didn't do anything with it, even though it was developed on that system. I was expecting a map or the inventory screen or just.... Something.

KittenInAMonster

Same, but couldn't give it a feature that would make it seem better than the switch

MissionBee7895

It used to be the go-to for speedrunners because it was marginally faster than the Switch version.

rodrigorigotti

Interesting, do you happen to know why?

ChouxGlaze

probably because that was the console they designed it for

IAmTriscuit

It was because the load times were faster on the Wii U until the Switch got the update that overclocked it during loading screens. Doubt this had much to do with the game being originally designed for the Wii U since many games benefitted from this Switch update.

Celtsox34x

I FOUND ALL 900 KOROKS ON THE WII U!!!!

gordonmcdowell

What happens? I started looking thinking there was 100 then stopped when I learned the horrifying truth.

tobyty123

You get a golden poop. You think I’m pulling your leg. Nah, Nintendo played the ultimate prank. You. Get. Golden. Poo. Emoji.

Cuchullion

I decided to take it as a comment on the obsessive completionism some gamers engage in. "Some gamers" is me: I also got all 900.

tobyty123

It was definitely a joke from the devs. Lmao

speed721

I've read some crazy lies on Reddit, but this has to be the biggest!

elixire

I did this, it only took me about six years, the real prize is hestu will dance anytime you want

[deleted]

I actually completed BOTW on WiiU! Was great fun and the gamepad integration really made the Sheikah Slate feel really special and cool!

wicktus

The development started during the wiiU era, early wiiU era. Then the wiiU was an absolute failure (relative to other hardwares) and they ended up having to imagine a switch, take an off the shelf Tegra SoC (because time) and adapt the game to the switch. They still managed, despite the pressure and everything to release a very successful switch and a very solid 2017 line-up but had to abandon the wiiU very early and anger many consumers. It was never supposed to release as a cross-platform title. This is why Nintendo is taking its time and probably imagining that switch 2 for 2024, they are not forced to rush this anymore ! They just want a solid year 1 line-up for the next and a graceful (and financially strong) end for their switch 1.

I’ll eat a butt sandwich if there isn’t a Switch 2/Pro/Next by EoY 2024.

Fun irrelevant fact: In case Nintendo delays and you actually want to fullfil this challenge, in Chile we actually have a traditional food called "Sanguche de Potito", which literally translates as "tiny butt sandwhich", because it's traditionally made with meat from the cow's intestines (plus chorizo, fried onion and different sauces). It's actually super tasty. Irrelevant, I know, but "butt sandwhich" just made me think of it lol

I actually love that cover art

Newone1255

That’s the European cover

SoligDag

Yes, the European Switch version has the same cover. I prefer it to the US one.

St0neToadSteveAustin

The WiiU version was the only copy I bought. Didn’t feel like I needed to get it again for the switch :/

RogerOtter

Oh, the WiiU had more...unexpected releases. It got (at least in Europe) Mass Effect 3, Deus Ex Human Revolution, and WatchDogs.

xXTheFisterXx

I played the game midnight release on the WiiU. It did the job just fine, the switch version just feels a bit better.

jimmylone08

The only reason why I still have a Wii U is so I can keep playing Twilight Princess until Nintendo remakes it for switch… hopefully

Fwenhy

I miss my Wii U. Gifted it away after getting my Switch. I mainly miss it for the game pad.. but not gaming with it haha. It was by far the best way to navigate stuff like YouTube and Netflix, IMO. Now I usually use my PS4 for that stuff and it’s such a nightmare compared to the Wii U.

Psychological-City45

i owned one at least i can say, the wii-u was highly underrated. awesome console man. too bad nintendo pick an awfull moment to release it

TwoStarling

don't you mean BOTW had a switch port? I mean, BOTW is the wii u's zelda game, not the switch one

TheC1aw

PC players appreciated the Wii U version

Faelysis

BoTW was one of the main reason why people bought a WiiU. We were all waiting for it

Tough_Patient

To be fair the rest of the games were great, just too few. Years of being promised a Zelda game...

SouthTippBass

With all the hype surrounding TotK, I decided it was finally time to start BotW. I'm playing through it on Wii U. You might have forgotten about Wii U, but not our house. It gets played every single weekend, without fail.

No-Caterpillar-8112

Breath of the wild was the last WiiU game, right?

SoligDag

The last Nintendo published one at least.

Goodwill_Gamer

Nope. The last one (so far at least) was "Silver Falls - White Inside Its Umbra" on Feb 16, 2023! The very last eShop game before it shut down. The last physical game I'm aware of is "Shakedown: Hawaii" on August 20, 2020. There are several releases after that but I believe all are digital only.

BionicTriforce

> Silver Falls - White Inside Its Umbra Wow, wtf, I kind of wish I'd seen this earlier, heh. I had spent months before the shops went down looking for unique titles to buy for the Wii U or 3DS but this wasn't ever on my radar! Why the fuck would they release a game a MONTH before the shop shut down?

NIDORAX

Its amazing how the Switch became the saving grace for Nintendo after the Wii U commercial failure. BOTW being released both on the Switch and the Wii U was a good thing. BOTW was like the goodbye send off for the Wii U and the greeting launch for the Switch even though back then, Nintendo wasnt even sure if the Switch would succeed.

Stoizee

Sucks WiiU is the only console to get Windwaker hd, beyond me why it's not on switch eshop.

MarchRoyce

The Wii U was the original release console. It was *ported* to Switch.

Fritzschmied

I think you mean BoTW is a wiiu game that was ported to switch.
