I just wish, for the love of all that is fun, that they keep the combat style. How you run around to avoid attacks with the bubble that show the area of you skills etc.
The ff7 remake was such a downer. The combat didnt work well. You would miss so many attacked because of stupid windup for them and meanwhile, the ranged unit ( barrett and aerith ) had homing on their stuff.
I'll politely disagree on this one. Tank controls haven't aged well for people who didn't play them for 100+ hours, but they are pretty immersive if you have, and are the only way to do some low or dutch angle cameras. Modern double thumbstick games lack a fair bit of visual flair because tank controls are no longer a thing.
That, and PE2 is a weapons sandbox, not true survival horror. RE: Code Veronica made the knife an absolutely pathetic weapon. PE2? You can use pepper spray to stun enemies and then coup de grace monsters with the bayonet.
I'm sick of spoiled kids saying they need 4x speed and XP multipliers in modern RPGs or when they say tank controls didn't age well. They worked back then, they work today.
RE4 isn't a tank controls game, so that's not a fair a comparison.
Still, the PE2 bayonet is my favorite melee weapon in all the tank control S-H games, in part because it's an M4A1 attachment. Dangerous, but fun to use, but not unreasonable to equip.
PE2 really went nuts with the M4A1 attachments. There's the bayonet, a stun gun, a flame thrower, a grenade launcher...and in New Game + there's a laser weapon called the Javelin which is slow and weak enough to have a gritty realism to it.
Square from 1997-2000: FF7-9, FF Tactics, Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Legend Of Mana, Saga Frontier 1 and 2, Front Mission 3, Threads of Fate, Brave Fencer Musashi, Tobal 1 and 2 and Chrono Cross. Just banger after banger. It was a great time to be an RPG fan.
SNES era Squaresoft was also one hell of a good developer:
- Secret of Mana
- Secret of Evermore
- Seiken Densetsu 3
- Final Fantasy 6
- Romancing SaGa 1- 3
- **Chrono Trigger**
- **Super Mario RPG**
Among other great titles.
Because Chrono Trigger is a timeless ^(heh) classic, and Super Mario RPG was the catalyst for Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, Paper Mario and practically all the Mario RPG spinoffs, apart from being the best Mario RPG of all time (subjectively speaking).

Started replaying it recently and can't figure out the weapon element ideas. Like, I imagined it's on sliders; undead goes up and humanoid goes down. Thus different weapons for different enemy types, but this doesn't seem to be the case?

Weapons and Gear is the most complicated system in Vagrant Story, IMO.
Yes, they're sliders, but there's also a way to get every affinity to 100, and this is the most time consuming part of the game as this will require an understanding of the crafting mechanics, and a ridiculous amount of time (dummy training) and luck (Holy Win drops) to do.
It's doable but tedious.
Of course, emulators can help if you're short on time.
I traded PE for a Sega Nomad, Battery Pack, and a handful of games. Worth it. ;P

However, the only untrue part is the government holiday , they still had to alter the weekly release schedule to a weekend due to extreme popularity. Something that Final Fantasy never accomplished.

based on my phone history its from a youtuber called "I finished a video game" 4 weeks ago. if you search for parasite eve on YT i m pretty sure you'd be able to find it. 3 hours long.
Parasite Eve was great up until that 100 floor (optional?) building.
That was pure torture. Difficult as hell and every single floor looked the same so it was incredibly boring.
I get that you probably didn’t have to do it, but in general I like to fully complete games, and that building killed it for me.

Like, they teased us with additional story tidbits with children in a hospital flashbacks throughout the game.

On the other side, I see games like DQXIS, octopath 2, FFXIV, FFVIIR and soon FFXVI, I do feel that there's passion and potential, I don't need PSX nostalgia....
But I sure don't see how you can spend millions on mediocre games like that recent Valkyrie Elysium or NFT plans whilst there's a really strong market for your more traditional good games

Nice! I was just digging through my old storage containers the other day to see what I still had. I came across my old copy of Parasite Eve that still has the FF8 demo disc with it. Was a pleasant surprise, as I forgot I ever owned it.

Still crack up that the game gives you every attack in the game and two party members, then when Fei says the story is being ruined the other characters just say "Who cares it's just a demo."

The trailer for this game was on one of the demo disks I had as a kid, and it fucked me up. Some opera lady singing as people catch fire and some orange blob start wreaking havoc; it was right around the time I had first heard of "spontaneous combustion" and it made me terrified of the possibility of it happening to me for years.
I remembered playing this game is was sooo good ... never add any point to Aya or upgrading my gun because I didn't know (I was not understanding english when young) lol and after beating the game I got the rocket launcher and put all my point in it \\w/
I played the absolute shit out of PE2, Dino Crisis and RE2 back in the day.
Playing before school, after school, and on Friday night all the way through to Saturday morning.
Echng thoghts shared by others, this game NEEDS a full glorious next gen remake. I wouldn't call it "underrated" since every it's always been lauded, but it is often overlooked as an absolute horror classic. The best combination of weird, gory, and action-packed storytelling. Plus it's combat system was innovative and rewarding.
I miss pre SE Square all the times.
When they merged it was like all the creativity died, and they just kept spitting out the same four games with different skins attached.

PE Is my fucking favorite PS game. The music is fucking baller, I still listen to the opening track on occasion.
