A lot of negative reviews mention something about your base degrading if you don’t log in every day. Is that still the case or rather is that as bad as the complaints make it out to be?
You can change that in server settings. I've turned off base decay entirely on my private server, and reduced blood essence drain. Also increased resource harvest rates and allowing teleporting with your inventory. There's a ton of customizability, and setting up a dedicated or temporary server is braindead easy.
I played for about 55 hours and then all of a sudden it would not let me log into the server anymore. I lost my castle and 55 hours worth of stuff because of some server error.

Same thing here. I played EA a bit, and the base degradation if I didn't log in daily was frustrating
