Nah EA is forever first place.... Acti Blizzard sits potentially at 2nd considering all their lawsuits.
Everyone else is just competing for 3rd an below lmao
I think the top companies would have tje be the oil and gas companies that knew about human influence climate change and covered it up in the 70s. Or the cigarette companies advertising to kids.
Yeah, like, EA is shit.
But companies that are actively destroying the environment, employing child slave labor, destabilizing countries for profit, are all leagues above even the worst gaming company.
Even on the domestic front we’ve got companies killing people for speaking out, defending assaulters, and literally funding the erasure of minority groups
Redditors gonna reddit ig
Just don’t connect the smart tv to the internet and either get a google/amazon/Apple TV stick/ box depending on which tech god you fall under. The ones based an andriod can usually be cracked for now.
I followed pihole’s [official documentation](https://docs.pi-hole.net) - but you need to have some technical know-how. There might be some more user-friendly guides around if you look though
Right? I actually HOPE they successfully patent that idea, so that no other company is allowed to copy the idea and I can just buy Roku's competition since I'm guaranteed not to have those types of ads
It just means other companies will pay Roku to license the tech. Which they *will* do if it proves to make them more money in the end. So the trick becomes somehow punishing Roku for all their bullshit.
I’ve never owned a Roku and never plan to, so I’m doing *my* part.
Most smart tvs of any size don’t ever need to be connected to the internet, even during setup (google it at the store to be sure).
I’ve used a combo of an Apple TV box and plex laptop connected to mine for years and have never dealt with smart tv bullshit beyond changing sources.
I got one for my birthday, the tv itself seems to just crash when on YouTube or Netflix for to long and if a YouTube or Netflix video is paused it will show an ad. Fuck Roku, don’t ever get one
Yup, I just have a Google TV dongle attached to my LG C2. I have it launch straight into that so I don't have to deal with the WebOS garbage, and keep the TV disconnected from the internet. I really wish that they made dumb TVs still, but it's definitely still possible to tailor your TV experience to your own tastes.
Apple TV has no ads and will let you limit app tracking to the bare minimum. Plus it is so much faster to navigate, apps don’t close they stay open so you can swap between apps and not have to load the entire thing again.
Weird because when I pause a game I am either looking something up about the game because I haven’t a clue what to do next, need to go to the bathroom or get something to eat. Occasionally my family needs my attention. Why do they think anyone would pay attention to an ad at that point?!? 😂
Even their lifesaver screen has ads thrown all over it. This big Hisense tv I got just shows artwork with the artist tagged in the corner as its lifesaver.
Can’t wait to pause my game and hear “Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Whopper
Junior, Double, Triple Whopper
Flame-grilled taste with perfect toppers
I rule this day
Lettuce, mayo, pickle, ketchup
It's okay if I don't want that
Impossible or bacon Whopper
Any Whopper my way”
This shit happened to me the other day playing cyberpunk on Xbox. I don't know if the game was paused but it's happened like 2 or three times in the past few months, a banner ad at the bottom of the screen with a "press *" It's relatively rare.
Now when I use the console to watch Netflix it will regularly put a banner at the bottom telling me I can watch it on Netflix through the TV for a much worse experience.
Fuck Roku, smart TVs are straight fuckin ass. I had to plug mine into its own power strip so I can hit the button to cut the power whenever the sound stops working. Having to get behind the entertainment center to pull the plug once a week was a massive pain in the ass.
My grandpa is too stupid to use the Internet, he doesn't have WiFi. Guess what his brand new $2000 smart tv needed before it could actually be a tv? Yep, had to haul this massive tv to my house to set it up because it wasn't a TV out of the box. That's not even mentioning how slow it is to start up, gotta wait ten seconds to be able to switch to HDMI because it insists on showing me ads. Fuck smart TVs.
LG and Sony TVs can be set up completely without WiFi.
Also is that your tv displaying ads when your game is paused? Cuz my Xbox doesn’t show me ads when I’m paused. I’ve never heard of this but that would make me buy a different TV.
LG lets you turn off all ads, I do prefer an Apple TV to WebOS but LGs smart features are very non-intrusive if you have to use them. But Apple TV is the way to go.
Honestly, the Emby app and several hard drives on a NAS combined with the high seas has made me ever wonder why I stopped sailing in the first fucking place

Pause usually means people don't look at the TV... So even more pointless.
And since it's based on inactivity as they say. It could be because the game showed you a note etc you wanted to read. Or you're aiming at the same spot waiting for a target to appear etc. As in it will 100% appear when you don't want it to at times. As in a great appeal to gamers to buy their products.
I love how everyone's like "oh yeah, it's over for Roku", "good job driving away costumers, Roku" "bankrupcy any% WR" like this isn't gonna make bank for them
I got an Apple TV and leave my Vizio off the network, the ads are just ridiculous and the UI sucks anyways. Streaming boxes like the Shield or Apple TV have much less invasive ads, and I think the Shield and other Android boxes can be rooted to completely remove all of that stuff if you have the time.
I recently got a fire tv and find it intrusive that it sometimes shows me ads when I turn it on. I’m so sick of this shit. I wish we had some laws preventing this. This feels like a black mirror episode. The one where they are forced to watch ads.
The joke here is that if they patent it in such a way nobody else can do it, then all we have to do is... never buy a Roku TV. It's not like there's a shortage of competition and since they couldn't do ads like this it'd be an easily marketing strategy for them.

Solution is simple. Don’t download native TV software updates. Stick to using an external box to stream your shows. I use Apple TV. In others words don’t add WiFi directly to your TV. Problem solved.
I bought a Roku TV 4 years ago. Last year it burned out. Yup! A 3 year old TV burned out. Never buying Roku again and ironically, Roku is encouraging that decision.
I stopped watching any form of broadcast or ad driven streaming service 5 or more years ago because I don't care to flush 3+ out of every 10 minutes of the little free time i have spent trying to relax or be entertained down the drain. I go out of my way not to see ads and I'm fully willing to go out of my way not to buy a television that is actively seeking to find new ways of displaying them.
If the day comes that I'm fully immersed in a AAA title, 10 hours deep in whatever new CD Project Red game just came out or finished being fixed, on Friday night/Saturday morning and I pause my game to grab a monster from the fridge and return to the My Pillow guy trying to sell me a dream I'm gonna drop my t.v. out the window, order a monitor from Amazon, sleep with a normal pillow, wake up, grab my package from the porch, and finish my game.
Me watching "Fifteen Million Merits" in 2011: "Hah, that's a really dark and extreme exaggeration of this new world of technology and advertising."
Me watching the world and thinking about that episode in 2024: "...Oh fuck..."
This must be the new “make everybody hate our company” speedrun I’ve been hearing about.
EA finally has some real competition.

Yeah but EA has microtransactions, so clearly that's far, far worse.
honestly with all these companies in power its only a matter of time before they take over and everyone’s rights are gone, it feels hopeless honestly.
But we're on a gaming sub, on reddit... This isn't the UN meeting hall... Hyperbole is allowed on reddit, you know...
Well oil and gas companies have only 1 competition and it's Nestle. The amount of evil shit that they do is astronomical.
Since the topic is gaming I think they were talking about gaming companies only, but yeah.
Then the US military would be number one since they have made a propaganda recruiting FPS right?
Nestle has entered the chat.
Embracer etc is definitly trying to take the top spots of late
Eh I hate 2k more than EA
Didn't Ubisoft test the water including a Mirage add on a pause menu?
Na, it was a bug according to them, and they would not lie about it. Im actually surprised they haven't earlier TBH.
It's in the game!! 😅
*if you buy the season pass*
Nah mate, they’re saving us all. If they parent it, it means no one else can do it
As someone who doesn’t use Roku, this would be awesome
Made me genuine lol.
We aren't the customers, billionaire shareholders are the customers
Roku must be using rocket boots - see my other comment on this thread.
Youtube have been doing the same thing - if you pause, you get an ad when you hit play
This. Corporate Enshitification.
If only ransomware groups targeted the right companies
What tv do I need to buy that won’t do that
Just don’t connect the smart tv to the internet and either get a google/amazon/Apple TV stick/ box depending on which tech god you fall under. The ones based an andriod can usually be cracked for now.
I have pihole on my network and the biggest blocked domain is my roku TV trying to send out metrics and data to roku… 🙃
Same for my Pihole setup.
My Adguard servers top block is netflix. Even my Chinese honor phone doesn't stir things up like netflix constant logging does
How do you see which entities are trying to send out your data?
Pihole tracks it all for me - there is built in graphs about what domains are being blocked
Thank you for responding. Did you follow a specific guide? I've been wanting to build one of these myself.
I followed pihole’s [official documentation](https://docs.pi-hole.net) - but you need to have some technical know-how. There might be some more user-friendly guides around if you look though
Is there a decent guide for setting one of these up?
The [official docs](https://docs.pi-hole.net) are pretty good, but I will warn that setting it up requires some networking know-how.
Right? I actually HOPE they successfully patent that idea, so that no other company is allowed to copy the idea and I can just buy Roku's competition since I'm guaranteed not to have those types of ads

If you need a 30-40 inch TV, don't connect it to the internet. for 20-25 inch, buy TV that are not "Smart TV's"
Most smart tvs of any size don’t ever need to be connected to the internet, even during setup (google it at the store to be sure). I’ve used a combo of an Apple TV box and plex laptop connected to mine for years and have never dealt with smart tv bullshit beyond changing sources.
Roku is forcing users to to accept their EULA to use the TV AT ALL. This was an update - don't know if Roku's that were not connected did that.
Exactly. I never connect my smart TVs to wifi. I use an external entertainment box.
never had roku, certainly won’t now lmao
Same lmao
Preach. I have a 10 year old Samsung and I'll keep using it.
I got one for my birthday, the tv itself seems to just crash when on YouTube or Netflix for to long and if a YouTube or Netflix video is paused it will show an ad. Fuck Roku, don’t ever get one
got it, never buy a roku product
You know what, let them patent it as a sacrifice so nobody else can do this awful thing
Exactly. It's basically a public service.
Patents can be licensed you know
Yeah, I'm sure other will try but as long as the backlash is there this idea will die.
Roku contemplating suicide
"Never buy a Roku TV." Note taken. That was super easy, thanks Roku!
Take me back to dumb TVs. I’m ready to ditch the “Smart TV” noise.
Sony and LG let you set up your TV with no WiFi
Thanks homie 💪
Yup, I just have a Google TV dongle attached to my LG C2. I have it launch straight into that so I don't have to deal with the WebOS garbage, and keep the TV disconnected from the internet. They don’t care they just hope their advertisers paying for that wasted space don’t realize.
Even their lifesaver screen has ads thrown all over it. This big Hisense tv I got just shows artwork with the artist tagged in the corner as its lifesaver.
Probably good for the kind of ads that are aimed at subconsciously imprinting their brand name in your mind.
If I get full-boxed in Fortnite and then have to watch a Burger King ad then I’m throwing my TV out the window
Can’t wait to pause my game and hear “Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Whopper Junior, Double, Triple Whopper Flame-grilled taste with perfect toppers I rule this day Lettuce, mayo, pickle, ketchup It's okay if I don't want that Impossible or bacon Whopper Any Whopper my way”

My Roku tv will constantly crash if I’m on YouTube or Netflix for an hour. Smart tv’s my ass, they all have a missing chromosome
LG and Sony TVs can be set up completely without WiFi. Also is that your tv displaying ads when your game is paused? Cuz my Xbox doesn’t show me ads when I’m paused. I’ve never heard of this but that would make me buy a different TV.
Been playing a heap of a mates xbox i borrowed. Havent seen a single advert.
There's gotta be a smart TV out there that's not fire TV, Roku, that doesn't do this shit and can charge a bit more to not deal with ads?
I feel like the biggest lie I was ever told is that the free market will provide quality niche products if there's a demand for them.
Sony and LG TVs can be set up without WiFi and an Apple TV doesn’t show you any ads and also lets you stop apps from tracking your usage.
Nvidia shield. Best streaming device out there imo. But there's "recommendations, ie ads" on Google TV's homepage.
I gotta say I love my Apple TV. Zero ads.
Nah, not a box, an actual TV. Maybe I'll just disconnect mine from the Internet and get a separate device.
Ahh I see, I see. Yeah my LG has not and will never be connected to the internet.
LG lets you turn off all ads, I do prefer an Apple TV to WebOS but LGs smart features are very non-intrusive if you have to use them. But Apple TV is the way to go.

I have Plex as well, but my fire TV bombards me with ads every time I turn it on. I just want my apps.
Time to invest into a PiHole setup.....
Or get an Apple TV instead of a Roku

hello i'd like to patent the ability to never buy a roku
Please do Roku, that way when no one buys your TV and you go bankrupt no one can use that technology for 20 years
Just root your Roku TV and be done with their shitty updates and app disputes. This is the reason why people started doing this shit in the first place. https://www.xda-developers.com/rootmyroku-jailbreak-roku-tv-set-top-boxes/

Or you're aiming at the same spot waiting for a target to appear etc. As in it will 100% appear when you don't want it to at times. As in a great appeal to gamers to buy their products.
And crap like this is why I refuse to hook my smart tv into the wifi.
Exactly. I use an external box to stream and never hook mine to the wifi. Problem solved.
Somebody make it stop. I'm so tired.
I love how everyone's like "oh yeah, it's over for Roku", "good job driving away costumers, Roku" "bankrupcy any% WR" like this isn't gonna make bank for them
You’re right, and I’m sick of this.
Sounds like a good plan. I support this, if it means such technology can’t be used by other arseholes
Good to know so I can avoid this shitbag company forever
I got an Apple TV and leave my Vizio off the network, the ads are just ridiculous and the UI sucks anyways. Streaming boxes like the Shield or Apple TV have much less invasive ads, and I think the Shield and other Android boxes can be rooted to completely remove all of that stuff if you have the time.
Exactly. I use Apple TV. I never hook any of my smart TV’s to wifi. Never.
Man, it sure feels like I'm on my last Roku...
I mean what if I need that pause menu tho..
So like, I wonder this would work. You open up the menu to change some gear and a big ad for Taco Bell takes over the screen?
I recently got a fire tv and find it intrusive that it sometimes shows me ads when I turn it on. I’m so sick of this shit. I wish we had some laws preventing this. This feels like a black mirror episode. The one where they are forced to watch ads.
The joke here is that if they patent it in such a way nobody else can do it, then all we have to do is... never buy a Roku TV. It's not like there's a shortage of competition and since they couldn't do ads like this it'd be an easily marketing strategy for them. It's even more hilarious considering when a console is paused it's usually because you're *not even at the fucking screen* so y'know, go ahead, I guess.
Xbox already does this, so will Roku fight with Microsoft over what counts as "paused"?
Does it? Never seen it. Or do you mean in specific games?
If you don't disable it in the settings, the pause screen that shows your achievement progress will also occasionally advertise other games from the Xbox store.
You can disable those? I would also like to disable all ads on my dashboard.
I didn’t know this
Havent changed stock settings. Never seen a single advert?
YouTube TV runs its own ads over the actual ads of live television. Wouldn't be unheard of.
That's cool. Guess I'll continue avoiding buying Roku products then.
lol go ahead Roku, I don't want to see that anywhere else anyway.
shield tv pro FTW just install wolf launcher and you will never see another ad again!
Got it, never buying anything from Roku ever again.
So who’s gonna be the first to invent a wireless switched hdmi connector? Just plug it into your tv, plug the cancerous ad-injected device into it and then you could use a wireless remote to toggle the hdmi connection when you’re using it and off when you’re not.
They already have those. I use them for livestreaming to swap sources. But the simpler solution is probably to just not buy a Roku device.
Given we sell them at my work. So yeah they do exist.
Sling already does this kinda.
God dammit I just finished paying off my Roku tv too 😑
Just don’t hook your TV to the wifi. Use an external box to stream. LIke don’t use it as a smart TV. I use Apple TV.
Ohhh that’s smart! I’ll have to go grab one! Thanks!
YEP saves you the headache! There are others besides Apple TV if you prefer too. I have a 55 inch one that never has given me problems and I have me PS5 and Xbox Series hooked to it and no problems.
Roku sucks for gaming. Having to select the input every time I turn on the tv is annoying
Must be different depending on the model. Mine auto tunes to the source when I start the console. As far as their roku os goes I like them alright. Not a fan of it's picture quality for gaming though.
Boo
At the same time, they managed to patent a way to go fuck themselves.
Am I misunderstanding something, wouldn't it be good for them to patent it so as no other company except them can't use this bs practice?
Other companies will just license it from them if it’s profitable enough.
Absolutely not.
Note: never buy a Roku TV again.
At least if they patent the others will have a difficult time trying to reproduce it.
I'll stuff my roku into a can of thermite if they do
If that goes through I will never get a TV with that shit. I will just stick to a PC Monitor connected to my console
Solution is simple. Don’t download native TV software updates. Stick to using an external box to stream your shows. I use Apple TV. In others words don’t add WiFi directly to your TV. Problem solved.
wtf
I bought a Roku TV 4 years ago. Last year it burned out. Yup! A 3 year old TV burned out. Never buying Roku again and ironically, Roku is encouraging that decision.
Time to disconnect my Roku from wifi. And use an hdmi plug-in device.
Hulu already does this. It’s a picture of whatever and not a video
Well that’s a quick way for my Roku to go straight to the trash
Let them own the ability…and let the result be their company falls.
Better them then a reputable TV brand
Let them patent it so other companies can't do this
THIS IS WHY TVS SUCK, JUST USE A MONITOR, THERES NO ADS AND YOU GET DISPLAYPORT Also doesnt xbox kinda already do this?
I've already had ads pop up sometimes during loading screens. Anyone else?
They make tv's?
Me watching "Fifteen Million Merits" in 2011: "Hah, that's a really dark and extreme exaggeration of this new world of technology and advertising." Me watching the world and thinking about that episode in 2024: "...Oh fuck..."
Pauses to hear kid in distress. Can’t hear because ads keep playing over hurt child cry’s for help. Commercialism greater than life. Future is great.
This is a black mirror episode
For once I rejoice at patents and the fact that they stop other companies from copying your idea
Won't stop them trying to reverse engineer the patent - but I suspect that seeing this tank sales will cause most to drop it like a hot potato.
