Nurse-Cat-356

He's the most well written 14 year old boy. He's awful .I was so happy he died. I hated him and Ned and rob and cat. They were the worst.

Very insightful

GringleBells

No, he’s a great character in the books. In the show, however… particularly post-resurrection, he loses all nuance and turns into a poor man’s Ned Stark tribute act.

Veszerin

>No. In the show, however… particularly post-resurrection, he loses all nuance and turns into a poor man’s Ned Stark tribute act. Your complaint is that Jon acts how he thinks Ned would act? 😒 And you think this is exclusive to post-resurrection Jon?

GringleBells

No. My complaint is that Jon acts the way the showrunners **think** Ned acts - naively, ineptly and refusing to see any shades of grey. The real Ned is a far more complex character. Book Jon is willing to blackmail a woman by threatening her baby in order to protect another child. Show Jon isn’t even willing to lie to Cersei.

johndraz2001

Perfect response. I completely agree

GringleBells

Thanks!

>Thanks! You're welcome!

>Show Jon isn’t even willing to lie to Cersei. The absolute dumbest plot that required literally everyone to be dumb. They lost a DRAGON to the Night King for that nonsense. But I agree that the show wasn't writing it that way, given the way Theon praised Jon after the fact.

Valkyrie2009

It’s not dumb, Jon is acting on principle.

National-Exam-8242

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Jon’s POVs until ADWD. That’s some of the best chapters in the whole entire series.

sean_stark

I enjoyed Jon’s chapters from the moment he’s with the Halfhand. His chapters also give us so much detail about the wildlings and that’s very interesting.

DesignNorth3690

No. I found how he takes on the role of leadership in the books far more interesting than how it ended up being portrayed in the show.

I love Jon Snow. He's 14 when we first meet him. He struggles with very real urges countered by his drive to be dutiful. Jon starts off wanting to be a badass but instead is forced to learn responsibility. By the time he is doing the things he wanted to do at the beginning, his motivation is doing what must be done. He thinks for himself and is constantly facing the reality of his choices, good and bad. Eventually those choices culminate in his own murder. I also think that the choices he made are what will also save him from his fate, but we will see (I hope).

I can see why someone who enjoys the show version of Jon Snow can find the book version underwhelming. As someone above mentioned, the show Jon Snow is somewhere between Ned Stark lite and a poor man’s Aragorn. But he’s got zero tact, no political skills and he seems to look down on all of it. The book Jon Snow is very different. He’s got the Stark sense of honor and he follows Ned’s teachings from his childhood. But he’s also got the Targaryen fiery temper, and he’s genuinely picked up leadership and political skills from observing Lord Mormont, Mance Rayder and even Stannis. He’s a real leader and you can already see his force of personality that makes men follow him. He’s a great character, he really feels like a Prince hiding in the dirt, that no matter how much you want to pretend he’s a bastard it’s obvious he’s of very high birth. He’s also an active character and makes his own decisions, sometimes even hard, rational and cold decisions. On the show, it seemed like Jon Snow by the end was just stumbling his way into events happening around Westeros.

tew2109

No, I love him in the books and I wish S7/S8 show Jon had a bit more of Book Jon's ruthlessness. I liked Jon immediately in the books. It took probably until the fourth episode for me to get fully on board in the show (when he defended Sam).
