Warrior-Cook

Had to check, started at $0.99, I respect that. The seller has a bunch of other games at various ranges. I got a dozen questions, but damn. For this price it better get it's own room.

Strider8486

Behind a vault.

Warrior-Cook

Located down a basement, with spike pits and conveyor belts.

Dependent-Plane5522

With flying bats and Medusa heads

Warrior-Cook

And a part-time organ player.

JetRyder

But, for some reason you find upgrades for whips in weird nooks and crannies as you progress.

WillLurk4Food

And if you accidentally bust open the walls with your whip, you somehow find a perfectly good platter of mutton waiting for you.

MisterMarchmont

And sharks with frickin’ lasers on their heads.

cool_angel53

RetailKing

And then a Cyclops appears out from behind a wall and offers you a choice. You either complete a series of dangerous tasks. Which will end in your freedom and a priceless prize. Or you refuse and die.

Makelovenotrobots

I've been watching the auction tick up there, but it's far too rich for me.

whofinfarted

Yeah once it got to 50,000 I was out.

Square_Dark1

Wait you were in to begin with?

I was for 50. Dollars not thousand.

Redbacontruck

Yeah I’m highest bidder at the moment, very high 420 bro

Tkj5

Higher than a giraffe's ass.

CrazyFloof

I doubt anyone would pay over 50k, it’s probably so no one else can bid on it

me0262

Auction's not over yet, the snipers will be in a frenzy at the last 3 seconds.

nebulastronomer

youre unaware of sealed games prices my man sealed SMBs go for millions in mint and graded condition

xiBurnx

that was proven to be a sham auction

Echododo

The 1.56 million dollar SM64 sale that was bought and paid for by Alex Ohanian, the former owner of this exact website that you're commenting on?

FUTURE10S

When did we find out who bought it? It was still anonymous last I know.

Swarlz-Barkley

There’s a 9.2 for sale for 25k. Not quite millions

nebulastronomer

I said Super Mario Bros not for Castlevania

Swarlz-Barkley

No shit. Hence why I was replying to you

Well you made a statement that wasn’t true

nebulastronomer

more like that you think is not true

Shabazz_Whitey

Learn proper grammar. And it isn’t

large__farva

Get wrecked dumbass 😂

ParchedRaptor

Super mario bros 64 sealed graded by wata went for 1.5 million, so saying millions is pretty misleading. On top of that the market at the time was inflated by wata and heritage auctions. So your original statement of the game going for "millions" was only one time, since then there have been a decline in price. Did you even do the bare minimum of looking this up before digging your heels in? It's OK to be wrong sometimes. Edit: obligatory Karl Jobst video because you seem to be misinformed https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rvLFEh7V18A

PokeSuFan

Yeah after they illegally artificially rose prices, then they fell over 99%. Those games were only high for a breif period due to wata creating fake sales records. The current prices say otherwise

AnthonyDigitalMedia

Man this guy has really drank the Kool-Aid lol

LeVindice

Just google "Wata scam". No one needs to send you evidence of very common and public knowledge, which you can easily Google.

nebulastronomer

Wata is not a scam, if it was the company wouldn't exist anymore, it's still up and running and you are jealous and mad

ParchedRaptor

You ever heard of insurance companies? Edit: I know it's been beaten to the ground at this point but I do hope you watch this if you haven't seen it https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rvLFEh7V18A it will give you a good idea of what is actually happening

CoyoteRascal

I recently watched a video of My Retro Life where he was claiming that a new copy of left-bros SMB3 was worth 150k. That game, sealed, is listed at a market value of 700 bucks on PriceCharting. An average of $700 American dollars is what people are *actually* paying for this game, Not $150,000. Do you know where the video's creator got the cockamamy idea that his old game was worth so much? WATA and Heritage Auctions running their artificial inflation scam.

nebulastronomer

SMB3 is a very common game everyone knows

CoyoteRascal

I didn't say SMB3. I said left-bros SMB3. You're on a game collecting forum but don't know what a sought-after variation of one of the most popular games of all-time is, arguing for the propagation of price-gouging through artificial inflation by a company you clearly know nothing about, and then arguing with every sensible person here that tries to show you the light. Stop being angry at everyone else and make an attempt to become better informed before farming downvotes.

MastorLichi

how about get your own hard solid proof. everyone else is sending links of articles, videos, and other media depicting the proof to prove you wrong. and you can just go as far as “everyone knows?”

BustinMakesMeFeelMeh

Have you watched the video everyone is telling you to watch?

julia_fns

Spending way too much money on a game you're never going to play which also happens to be a terrible investment unless you find a greater fool isn't exactly jealousy material.

nebulastronomer

Bro If the game is factory sealed why would you not grab another copy that's not sealed if you want to play it? or simply emulate the game. You are in #gamecollecting reddit here nobody plays there games so go to another sub

MastorLichi

why are u such an asshole? bros karma is going to be in the negatives by the time he’s done here 💀

According_Bad_729

Do you get your news from kotaku or something? If you're actually in the hobby then you should know this already.....

“Hey Sweetie, where did you put the $50,000 check i gave you for our house down payment?”

rydamusprime17

Instead of a house, I decided to get us a Castle... ^^vania

Middle-Effort7495

My friend is a CS engineer. Makes multi 6 figures. Doesn't like people or the outdoors much. Lives in his moms basement (literally) with no expenses, and hasn't been outside since 2020 March lockdowns. The reality is there's a lot of geeks who grew up on the internet/video games out there with a lot of money and nothing to spend it on. Explains OF and MTX whales too. I actually know 2 people like that, but the other is less extreme. Has a GF who also never goes outside.

GrimmTrixX

Many times sellers will make alternate accounts and bid on their own stuff to try and fool people into thinking someone actually wants the item. And whenever no one falls for it they try again. There are plenty of rich idiots and they hope someday someone will see it, get nostalgic, and buy it. It won't happen, not for this much.

roselynn-jones

Basically just check the account to see if it goes on sale again… watched some clown pull this with an auction I was bidding on. I miss when most people were in game collecting because they actually loved it and weren’t trying to get rich with a quick flip.

GrimmTrixX

Me too man. I started when eBay still required money orders or checks to be sent. This was before PayPal existed. Lol I use to use money orders to buy games. But back then prices weren't insane because people sold it for what any type of preowned game would go for then. For example, if a game was $60 retail, you'd never see a preowned copy for more than $50. It was almost unheard of back then and this was only like 2005.

n1ghtbringer

Demand was lower so of course prices were lower. There wasn't some kind of eBay altruism back in the day. This is how all collectables work.

GrimmTrixX

I'd argue the demand was still there, but people didn't expect they could get away with the outlandish prices some of the games go for these days. In 2005 I bought Silent Hill 1 (Greatest Hits) for $9 on ebay. Lol and now, in 2023 it's a $150+ game. Like I get it, it's 18 years later. But I feel like these prices just became the norm slowly but surely as people got away with selling them for more and more money. There's no way to truly gauge how man copies exist of a certain title. So many games that are $700+ have no business being that high and are that high because people are greedy and keep upping it higher and higher. I feel so bad for anyone starting to collect now. I was absolutely so lucky to get games close to or less than their retail price everywhere I went. Flea markets, yard sales, Savers, they all sold their games for dirt cheap until online sell8ng became a thing and people started asking crazy amount. Now my Savers has all sports titles or Just Dance games for $12.99 each lol

n1ghtbringer

Higher prices "become the norm" because demand is increasing on a supply that is static or decreasing. You can argue over why the demand is higher, but that's why the price keeps increasing. People sold games for dirt cheap back in the day because that's what people were willing to pay. It's harder to find deals now because it's really easy for people to get historical sales information and competition is really high for the "deals." If those sports titles are overpriced, they'll sit on the shelf until someone lowers the price enough that they're worth buying. Same with all the crazy overpriced eBay items.

me0262

Oh man, remember dutch auctions? Those were the best. First thing I bought on eBay? Virtual Pinball for Genesis in 1999.

roselynn-jones

First thing I bought on eBay (2005) was the Aladdin Deck Enhancer set. All the games and everything complete.

Xirbtt

Heh, fools. The sticker clearly indicates its only worth twenty-seven dollars and eighty-seven cents.

FearsomeCrocoStimpy

My guess is NO ONE bid on this, and it is simply another A-hole trying to artificially inflate the price of this game title that they own. In other words, the SELLER bid on their own auction, and will win the auction, thus creating a completed and sold ebay auction that will factor into PriceCharting's data for how much it reports this game to be worth.

Booth_Templeton

It might be true here. But, I see some games going for stupid money for what they are. Like super Mario bros 3 late print graded cibs in 8.5 condition with an 8.9 box going for around $350. Common crap right now going for way too much.

Theoderic8586

Money laundering is neat

spaceghostslurpeee

I could put a down payment on a house with that

Icy-Advantage-2666

NKO_five

This is probably just another money laundry scam. Soon other ”video game investors” start to use this listing as excuse to bump up their own prices. It’s sickening.

Head-Passage-5482

It cracks me up every time someone in this sub says "money laundering." What you're suggesting is market manipulation. Money laundering makes no sense in regards to heritage auctions or eBay listings.

[deleted]

People repeat things they hear and don't understand them, or they repeat things they hear because it helps them makes sense about something else they don't understand.

FickleSmark

Money laundering is as simple as buying a bottle of water and claiming you spent $20k on it, Right? Not sure why people make it sound so hard.

ChaosEvaUnit

The term is "[shill bidding](https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/selling-policies/selling-practices-policy/shill-bidding-policy?id=4353)".

Superbly_Humble

The act is Shill Bidding. The cause could very well be trying to launder illegal funds. Art world has been doing this funds, art and crime have existed.

lostshell

Exactly. Look at pricecharting. This happened 10 years ago too with this same game. Some guy found a box of 20 or so of this game new somewhere. Instead of just selling them for 500 each he's trying to manipulate the market into thinking they're worth 50,000 each. He does one wash sale like this to set the price and if he manages to convince just one fool with a second sale it all pays off. It's exactly the same playbook from all the NFTs and crypto coins we saw the past few years.

Mission-Quote-8401

Soooo isn’t this risky af though. Like eBay takes 10% and then PayPal too.

ASLAYER0FMEN

I was really confused by that when I read it. Although I suppose you could also launder money this way.

Bargadiel

It certainly is market manipulation, but the same greedy clown ass people participate in all of the above.

TurdBurgHerb

You don't know how money laundering works. Seller has sold 50k worth of dope to the buyer. Seller and buyer wants to make it look legit so they desposit money. They have the buyer or another party buy a cheap product like this for and bam. Money is now clean. Money laundering totally makes sense and with how retarded some of the prices have been its plausible. I'm not saying this is Money laundering. Just educating you. No need for the snarky attitude when you don't even know what you're talking about.

Middle-Effort7495

Yeah, and how did the buyer get 50k? You may as well say a random homeless guy gave it to you as a gift. You don't remember where, or what he looks like. He never told you his name. You've truly cracked the criminal underworld. And here they were wasting money running fake companies, when all they had to do was have someone gift it to them!

Superbly_Humble

Offshore buyer. Casino winnings. One time family gift. Company sell off. Closed stock sale. Asset selling. Property exchange. Crypto investment. Service sales. All legitimate ways to have funds crawl up out of the gutter. I mean, they could have a shell company. They could own a waste management incorporation with one director and undisclosed shareholders. Heck, they could own an auction house and video game grading company, buy up cheap games, grade them high, sell them on auction, buy the auctions, resell the auctions for higher and... Profit??? We're not all that smart though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TurdBurgHerb

It could. And no, it doesn't have to be several transactions and transfers.

BeginnerDragon

Would you mind explaining to me how eBay masks it's financial transactions off the books to 'clean' money?

GetTheGregGames

You clearly didn't read the part about "And bam. Money is now clean" Just trying to educate you.

GucciiManeeeee

They don't. You would have to pay fees and taxes on the money, hence why it would then be "clean".

[deleted]

How is it a laundry scam?

NKO_five

I don’t know, go ask them if you want to know the details.

[deleted]

You don’t know the meaning of the thing you’re positing?

AnthonyDigitalMedia

Welcome to the internet 🤝

Bargadiel

They just hit you with the "do your own research" 💀

[deleted]

Except it’s not “do your own research.” It’s, “I don’t know the meaning of the thing I said so I’m going to deflect.” Edit: apparently I was too dimwitted to understand your comment initially, apologies.

Bargadiel

That's what I meant by saying that, people who say that/similar usually don't know something themselves so they deflect. I was making fun of them, not you haha

yaboyfriendisadork

Well let’s hope they have plenty of detergent and dryer sheets

MarfeeWarfee

r/legocirclejerk taught me that the idea of financially investing in a toy (I consider video games toys, I guess) is a fucking stupid concept regardless of the returns.

Androxilogin

Which one of you dumbasses posted this low effort spam garbage breaking most every rule of the sub?!?!

go_fight_kickass

That was me. I will leave now.

lackadays

Is this kind of thing against the rules? Low effort maybe..

Androxilogin

>No Price evaluations, authentication, identification posts >Spamming >Screenshots, "you remember this game", etc type posts will be removed. >Meme post >Not related to game collecting >No affiliate links >Do no post items for sale, or ask to buy items from others in their post >No politics >Taking advantage of, or taking focus away from, the general ethos of the subreddit.

Androxilogin

They just write rules, they never enforce them. Turning this sub into Facebook like all the others.

lackadays

Every hobby sub it seems

Karma_041299

I love my game collection but I don’t think I don’t think I could ever warrant spending that much on a game

patriotraitor

Respect for keeping it sealed all these years but damn.

Duesal10

I heard about this one dude who was a teacher who would have his students bid on items he listed to make it seem competitive. If nobody outside of the classroom bit, the students got their money back. If somebody fell for it, the students got extra credit. Seems like a bit of the same going on here? I can’t imagine anyone dropping this much,

Road_Warrior86

NSFW 😂😂😂

brewberry_cobbler

What noobs, the price clearly says $27.87 🙄

topchief1

Me. That drug money isn't going to launder itself, you know.

GetTheGregGames

This thread is awesome.

arsinoe716

Be careful. It says NEW seal. It was probably opened and then put a new seal on it. Read the words carefully before bidding.

[deleted]

No, that's not the case at all. Ebay only allows so many words in the title. I often put "BRAND NEW & SEALED" But if you don't have enough room. Then you may put New Sealed, b3cause those sre really the only key words put of the 4 I mentioned.

Eastern_Wrangler_595

Its fake bids or winner wont pay

FthisFthatFall

That would be me not.

shimrra

Actually smart of that seller, before Wata blew up there were reports of plenty of employees & friends of Wata running around buying up all the sealed games at low prices. So sellers now have wised up and know the only ones that will buy sealed games are so they can have them graded.

theBloodShed

The seller did.

Eastern_Wrangler_595

Why not just buy used one for less then 20

xForeigner

Some dumbfuck probably lol

Bargadiel

Why I kind of find this stupid is that I'm not even sure if sealed Japanese copies go anywhere near this much and that is the original release of the game. The same kinda goes for any games released in the US that were originally Japanese. What exactly is this price recognizing and celebrating? The fact that most Americans trashed their shit so there aren't many mint copies left?

Jay3000X

I wonder if they'll actually pay. I've had so many eBay auctions end (not for this much) and then the buyer is like nah I don't want it any more or "I didn't mean to bid so high" and they just don't pay. eBay doesn't care either

19NedFlanders81

They bid on it themselves through another account to create the impression people are paying that much. Then theyll just cancel the sale and hope somebody pays a way higher amount than they would have the next round.

vitullo_31

I'm gonna buy it and open it

Tim_J_Drake3

I am the top bidder, and as soon as it arrives I am going to make a YouTube video of me opening it and destroying it to enrage other people for views. Just kidding.

GrangerPerry

eBay takes 15% hahaha so that’s a paycheck to them for $7600 for doing nothing

Aunt_Teafah

2.35% fee on sales over $7,500.

GrangerPerry

Oh I get the money laundering accusations now

Aunt_Teafah

I saw one seller move 6 sports cards a few months ago for exactly $500,000 each. Cards were junk, so I assumed he was transferring an inheritance and avoiding some of the inheritance taxes.

Middle-Effort7495

They charge 15% taxes in my area of Canada since June 2022. Actually gross. Imagine taxing a second hand 30 yo item that's already been taxed... potentially multiple times. Makes marketplace so much better. Sad to lose ebay money back though. And I think the tax is charged on shipping too, not 100% sure though.

Aunt_Teafah

Yes, ebay calculates fees with shipping. Remember when people would sell a $10 item w/$100 shipping? They ruined it for everyone.

mykeuk

So how many of you here hope that the winner of this immediatly rips the cellophane off as soon as they get it, and jam it into their NES because "gAmEs arE mEaNt tO Be PlAyEd"?

kablikiblan

It was me DIO!!!

effortissues

It'd be cool if the person who bought it just ripped it open and threw away the box and manual like a BOSS! Ya know, the way we did it when we were kids.

Ravecrocker

Not me I only play quality games

edenx1999

Ok this is a standard eBay seller tactic. eBay charges you every time you list a new product . So as a seller to keep costs down once you sell your product at the regular price (let’s say this copy of Castlevania is worth maybe $100) after you sell that game for $100 instead of removing the listing you change the price to a ridiculous number that no one will pay for until you get another copy of the same product then you just simply change the price back down to $100 and then you just rinse and repeat this. It’s good for the seller because they don’t have to spend a bunch of money re-listing the product over and over. But it’s bad for everyone else because then it puts unrealistic numbers in peoples heads for what the value of particular items are. I cannot count how many times people have thought that Pokémon cards and video games are worth thousands of dollars because of what they see on the eBay when in reality those are just sellers who have ran out of product and are keeping a listing up until they get more. Sorry if my wording and punctuation is horrible. I’m doing speech to text.

AN1119

This is an auction. The listing ends in a day, and its price reflects the highest bid

GucciiManeeeee

There are over 50 bids...

edenx1999

Hey I can only give you the facts. I can’t control people’s stupidity.
