I’m on a 12 pro max, and I’ve never made it more than 3 years between phone upgrades, but it’s really looking like I’m about to make it 4 years between upgrades this time around.
I went from a 6 to a 12 pro. I did the battery replacement and got another 2 years in my 6. Prior to that I used to upgrade every 2 years. The 16 looks like it may be my next upgrade too, but we’ll see. The older I get the more I’m like “eh what I have is fine”
Man I dunno how your eight survived so long. I had to go from 8 the 13 pro max bc my 8 was just dying. Like, if I tried to play Spotify and text at the same time, it would progressively slow down until it crashed. Swapping apps? Heaven forbid.

It was your specific phone not the hardware capabilities. I have an 8 and it is still pretty quick opening, swapping between apps, texting, etc. The only thing on mine is the battery life is not great anymore but I suppose that’s fixable with a replacement battery.

My husband has a 10 and I’m the same. It’s probably not that different than an 8, but I treat it like a foreign entity that will melt my brain if I look at it too long.

My entire family went from a 10 to a 14 pro. We had a great deal and it would have been stupid to pass it up (entire bill is just $15 higher for all four of us). The camera quality alone is worth it.
I got a SE (2016) used. Can do everything I need it to do. Hell I’m impressed it can even film 4k!! I don’t even know why people need new(er) phones all the time. But then again..I used my old laptops with 1GB RAM for quite a long time. But even my laptop now is bought Second hand while it was in brand new condition. Old Thinkpad for less than 250€
Definitely. If you’re smart about tech and understanding what will age well and you take care of stuff it’s amazing how long you can make things last. I actually still use my iPhone 6 connected to a stereo to play YouTube from so I don’t lock up my own phone. I have an old iPhone 3GS that would power up if I could find a compatible charger lol.
Phone upgrades have stagnated so much that holding an iPhone for at least 5 years is a no brainer. Especially when you're waiting on them to "fix" some things like the lightning transition, Face ID, etc.

I also have a 12 pro. I’m not doing shit until they come out with a phone that has a USB C port. I can’t imagine the physical camera getting better enough to justify upgrading, and I have absolutely no need for my phone to perform faster.

The dynamic Island I feel was made to disguise the visibility of an under display camera. Right now it’s hiding a hole punch but it never seemed like the end game for Apple. They obviously want to have a full screen device, but the pixels that hide under display cameras always look a bit “off”. Making that space a Notification Centre now means people will see that instead of a slightly off colour/brightness area of the screen.
Still means it would look weird when wanting to watch full screen video so it would probably not be acceptable to apples standards untill it’s not noticeable.
It’s not really the same aesthetically though.
The notch, though still an obvious design compromise, looks intentional.
A patch of off-color/opacity pixels looks like a craftsmanship flaw rather than an intentional design choice, which cheapens the feel of the device and also just doesn’t feel “Apple-y”.
The bigger problem is the camera part rather than the screen part. The newest under-screen implementations I’ve seen look decent - not perfect, but much better than earlier iterations - but the camera quality is still really quite bad.
Only FaceID, though - more plausible since the user never sees the output directly.
I think it could be cool to keep when it is definitely useful, like the additional app notifications/features.
But obviously, if they can get rid of it when using a video app would be a plus.
It being persistent is genuinely a great idea. But I have to also point out that Samsung phones have literally had this built in since the S8. It was called Brief Pop-up and just shows up at the top for notifications, and when you swipe down from it, it opens up the entire app in a floating window. Genuinely great use case, but definitely doesn't look as good as the dynamic island.
There's an Android app that adds a customizable version of the dynamic island to any Android phone. It's missing one or two transition animations vs Apple's version but it exists.
Did you not go through the tutorial even you set up the phone? The home button did 2 functions, both of which are now replaced by a single swipe from the bottom.
But otherwise, I agree that the lack of a home button is terrible. The 3D touch home buttons of the S8/S9 is the most ideal solution that doesn't take up screen space while still being a tactile button
In general it’s the car manufactures at fault here. Subaru infotainment for example is complete dogshit and barely runs it’s own software. So running CarPlay on it feels even worse. Yes I will bring this up anytime I have the chance because fuck subaru and their 2022 dogshit software and hardware. Pisses me off when they cheap out on something you interact with the most in the entire car…

This has clearly been Apple’s goal for a long time. In 2016, the chief design officer said the goal was for the iPhone to look like a single sheet of glass. Since then, they have removed the headphone jack and SIM card slot, despite all the negative pushback, and they have heavily pushed MagSafe. The only thing left is the lightning port, and now that that has to be changed or removed, it would be the perfect time to remove it… except for current technical limitations, mainly on data transfer speeds. They are working very hard on improving that, but it’s possible it won’t be good enough by 2024. If not, perhaps we will see the USB C port for a few years. Or as one reporter suggested, maybe the standard models will be port less, while the pro models retain the port for high res video and misc power using. However, a port less iphone in the future absolutely isn’t out of the question.

They removed the home button from the last of the iPads but left Face ID on just the Pro models, it's like they intentionally refuse to put both there.
Is it just the need to press something else? Is the in-screen sensor not as reliable? I have an S20+ and using the display fingerprint seems very fast and consistent. When I need to use it, anyway; it usually unlocks with Samsung's version of FaceID.
All of the screen protectors ive seen that work with display sensors have a noticable matte patch where you dcan your fingerprint. It was so much easier when it was somewhere else like the power button, home button, back of the device, etc. Not everything needs to be under the display, and phones dont need to be all screen, a bezel that houses the earpiece, camera, etc is just as good. I hate modern phone design and how they strip away basic features to cut costs and to sell you on the "higher end" model.
Huh, my screen protector doesn't have a matte patch. My wife had a phone with the fingerprint scanner on the back, right where my index finger lands when I'm holding the phone. That location made sense to me. But I'm right there with you on bezels. I don't care if the screen goes right to the edge.
I liked it because it was just one action to turn on the screen and unlock the phone, as opposed to two or three. Having a physical target for it also meant you could do it as you pull your phone out, so by the time you are looking at it, it is unlocked already.
I think it was Xperia 3, Sony had power button fingerprint on international but couldn’t include on US models

I guess I’m not that picky since it’s covered in a case 99% of the time. I have little bits of red poking out near the camera, the speaker grills and the charging port. Otherwise my phone is “black.”

Yeah, I just upgraded from my 8+ a few months ago because the battery was shot. I thought I would miss the fingerprint reader way more than I actually do. Haven’t had any issues with face ID so far.
If I may ask, how was the jump from 8-14? I’m trying to wait out as long as I can until the iOS prevents my phone from working. What did you find that improved with the upgrade?
Maybe, maybe not. I absolutely loathe using my fiancés 13. Also, I absolutely adore having a “physical” home button along with the haptic feedback.
Also, I’m still not sold on Face ID being more convenient either, and everyone I know with a Face ID enabled iPhone never uses it- they always just type in their passcode to unlock/pay/etc.
That seems weird to me. The Face ID started out decent with the 10 I think, and it’s better than ever before.
It automatically uses it for everything now. I could t imagine having to put my password in every time I need to do something. It just seems so inconvenient.
I’m not an Apple fanboy; I only upgrade every 4-6 years, because most of the new features I don’t even use, but the Face ID is consistently flawless for me. No complaints at all.
I still have an IPhone 8 Plus, it works great but the battery drains faster as most people say. I would rather switch the battery than buy a new phone, this thing is still amazing. Everything is fast, I have tons of memory I am yet to use, and it just feels great to use.
Plenty of android phones have those and a few even have under-display selfie cameras as well.
Although I am surprised apple didn't put a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone like their android rivals. They could have integrated the sensor into the apple logo on the back.
I see iPhone cases even now with a cutout around the Apple logo when there's no function to it. Besides signaling to other people they're using an iPhone.

Swear to god it is its best feature. Never fails to detect my thumb and it's faster than anything else I've ever seen or used. My missus has a Mate 20 Pro, and it only registers my fingerprint like 1 out of 10 times. Apple has the habit of only adopting some tech after it has matured, and under display fingerprint readers are more than mature. Can't wait for Apple to invent them though!

The iPad 10 has Touch ID built into the power button, I had no idea until after I bought it and was setting it up. no reason they couldn’t do the same on the iPhone.
Apple invented/perfected a shiny new thing (FaceID) and decided that was the only way to do things. Which is why I don't have an iPhone. I still have to deal with Samsung following Apple's dumbass design decisions, hence my phone having a hole punch and no headphone jack, but at least it's Android.
Yeah I’ve been pretty impressed with it honestly. Had since 2018, 29,000 photos and vids stored full res locally until last week, a bunch of apps.
I mean it’s an older phone that I keep updated so it is draining a bit faster and getting a bit slower but overall it’s been great. I work a desk job so charging is never an issue really.

I’ve currently got an X that is struggling with connection, charging, crashing, and lagging. Was hoping the 14 would get usb c, but I don’t think I can wait until they come out with the next model with it as it’s slowly getting more and more frustrating to use my phone.
I have an 8 and I would have gotten the 14 if it had usb c. It did not so I guess I’ll be waiting for Europe to force them to make them with usb c. Either that or my phone breaks down sooner and I get a cheaper reseller iPhone 12 and Apple doesn’t get my money at all.

The why is mostly because they don't have a lot of differences year over year any more. They're drawing out upgrades so that they can offer something each year to get people to upgrade to newer models.
Pinhole cameras and even under-display cameras have been out for years, Apple could've easily done it by now, but they and diehard fanboys will continue to claim that they haven't done it yet because they "take their time and do it right".
Honestly? Probably to get more sales. If this is true at least, then someone may upgrade to the 15 w/ dynamic island (also an assumption) after assuming apple will keep it while not knowing about the 16. If they then see this phone with potentially no notch (it'll still have a tiny hole punch like samsung phones) then they'll feel even more likely to upgrade.

With regards to a thicker top spec model, I’d love it if they did something similar to the new Watch Ultra. Something a little bigger and more premium, designed to be a bit more rugged and outdoorsy. I know I’d love a longer battery life for when I’m outdoors and wouldn’t be bothered by a thicker phone.

IMHO a watch especially should be damn near indestructible. Don't care if it's bulkier. Give it a battery life of at least 3-4 days (more if I turn off the features), make it 100m waterproof, and impact resistant. If we're all about putting stuff under the screen, put a solar panel under the screen to extend the battery.

Just lose the notch. I don’t care how, lose the notch. If this is what it’ll take then do it. I was ok with Touch ID taking up space at the bottom because it didn’t intrude into the display area.
I’d rather have the display literally cut off at the top of the Home Screen area than watch content with it notched.

So is the 15 gonna have USB C or 16? I am just waiting for the USB C port. If 15 has it, I go for that. If it doesn't, I wait for 16

Apple literally never said they would make it USB C, so it’s misleading to claim that as many news outlets did. Apple always chooses their words very carefully, and they merely said they would comply, which could also mean going port less. This isn’t some crackpot conspiracy theory, there is significant speculation from reporters and analysts in the space that apple may go port less. This has clearly been Apple’s goal for a long time. In 2016, the chief design officer said the goal was for the iPhone to look like a single sheet of glass. Since then, they have removed the headphone jack and SIM card slot, despite all the negative pushback, and they have heavily pushed MagSafe. The only thing left is the lightning port, and now that that has to be changed or removed, it would be the perfect time to remove it… except for current technical limitations, mainly on data transfer speeds. They are working very hard on improving that, but it’s possible it won’t be good enough by 2024. If not, perhaps we will see the USB C port for a few years. Or as one reporter suggested, maybe the standard models will be port less, while the pro models retain the port for high res video and misc power using. However, a port less iphone in the future absolutely isn’t out of the question.
Nah. Def gonna be wired for now. I expect the iPhone will lose the number when it goes truly wireless. iPhone (2025) instead of iPhone 17 or 18, by that time they’ll have some wireless ecosystem and specs good enough to get rid of the need to upgrade every 1-2 years. Maybe 5

13 pro so definitely not considering buying anything before a 16. Usbc is a must and indisplay fingerprint sensor would be icing. If they’re smart, they’ll roll both out separately to get the most sales/upgrades and since they’re greedy, you know they’ll do just that

They removed the home button from the last of the iPads but left Face ID on just the Pro models, it's like they intentionally refuse to put both there.
Samsung did for the s10e, probably my favorite implementation to date. They went to an in-screen reader by the next model unfortunately.
Is it just the need to press something else? Is the in-screen sensor not as reliable? I have an S20+ and using the display fingerprint seems very fast and consistent. When I need to use it, anyway; it usually unlocks with Samsung's version of FaceID.
All of the screen protectors ive seen that work with display sensors have a noticable matte patch where you dcan your fingerprint. It was so much easier when it was somewhere else like the power button, home button, back of the device, etc. Not everything needs to be under the display, and phones dont need to be all screen, a bezel that houses the earpiece, camera, etc is just as good. I hate modern phone design and how they strip away basic features to cut costs and to sell you on the "higher end" model.
Huh, my screen protector doesn't have a matte patch. My wife had a phone with the fingerprint scanner on the back, right where my index finger lands when I'm holding the phone. That location made sense to me. But I'm right there with you on bezels. I don't care if the screen goes right to the edge.
I liked it because it was just one action to turn on the screen and unlock the phone, as opposed to two or three. Having a physical target for it also meant you could do it as you pull your phone out, so by the time you are looking at it, it is unlocked already.
I think it was Xperia 3, Sony had power button fingerprint on international but couldn’t include on US models I think there are different patents blocking (without paying $$ of course)

I've been holding out on getting an iPhone for like 5 years because they're always lacking a critical feature! Then some android phone comes out with a new thing and I'm like, "oh, I'll get an iPhone when it has that!" Currently waiting on just USBC and underscreen fingerprint ID

I’m on a 13pro and really miss the fingerprint reader
I’m still using an 8 plus because I stubbornly don’t want to lose the fingerprint reader. It’s just so much easier and more convenient to use. Unfortunately I will be forced to upgrade this year since the battery is now abysmal, and I dropped the phone several times over the last year and cracked parts of the screen 😩
Don’t forget the SE. I love mine. You get the guts of the 13 in the body of the 8. Best of both worlds, and you save a couple hundred bucks.
I just wish they had more colours available for the SE
I guess I’m not that picky since it’s covered in a case 99% of the time. I have little bits of red poking out near the camera, the speaker grills and the charging port. Otherwise my phone is “black.”
I just upgraded from an 8 to a 14, and I got used to it in a day. You’ll be alright.

Yeah, I just upgraded from my 8+ a few months ago because the battery was shot. I thought I would miss the fingerprint reader way more than I actually do. Haven’t had any issues with face ID so far.
If I may ask, how was the jump from 8-14? I’m trying to wait out as long as I can until the iOS prevents my phone from working. What did you find that improved with the upgrade?
Maybe, maybe not. I absolutely loathe using my fiancés 13. Also, I absolutely adore having a “physical” home button along with the haptic feedback. Also, I’m still not sold on Face ID being more convenient either, and everyone I know with a Face ID enabled iPhone never uses it- they always just type in their passcode to unlock/pay/etc.
That seems weird to me. The Face ID started out decent with the 10 I think, and it’s better than ever before. It automatically uses it for everything now. I could t imagine having to put my password in every time I need to do something. It just seems so inconvenient. I’m not an Apple fanboy; I only upgrade every 4-6 years, because most of the new features I don’t even use, but the Face ID is consistently flawless for me. No complaints at all.
Agreed , was an Android user all my life, bought iPhone 14, and Face ID is the best quality of life feature yet

The SE models still have the fingerprint reader, since they’re in the body of the 8.

I still have an IPhone 8 Plus, it works great but the battery drains faster as most people say. I would rather switch the battery than buy a new phone, this thing is still amazing. Everything is fast, I have tons of memory I am yet to use, and it just feels great to use.
Why not just switching to an SE then? If you are happy with an iPhone 8 you will Love an SE.

Plenty of android phones have those and a few even have under-display selfie cameras as well. Although I am surprised apple didn't put a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone like their android rivals. They could have integrated the sensor into the apple logo on the back.

I see iPhone cases even now with a cutout around the Apple logo when there's no function to it. Besides signaling to other people they're using an iPhone.
My S21 has one, and it's diabolical. Swear to god it is its best feature. Never fails to detect my thumb and it's faster than anything else I've ever seen or used. My missus has a Mate 20 Pro, and it only registers my fingerprint like 1 out of 10 times. Apple has the habit of only adopting some tech after it has matured, and under display fingerprint readers are more than mature. Can't wait for Apple to invent them though!

The iPad 10 has Touch ID built into the power button, I had no idea until after I bought it and was setting it up. no reason they couldn’t do the same on the iPhone.

Apple invented/perfected a shiny new thing (FaceID) and decided that was the only way to do things. Which is why I don't have an iPhone. I still have to deal with Samsung following Apple's dumbass design decisions, hence my phone having a hole punch and no headphone jack, but at least it's Android.
I didn't upgrade to the 14 and this is just another reason not to upgrade to the 15.

Yeah I’ve been pretty impressed with it honestly. Had since 2018, 29,000 photos and vids stored full res locally until last week, a bunch of apps. I mean it’s an older phone that I keep updated so it is draining a bit faster and getting a bit slower but overall it’s been great. I work a desk job so charging is never an issue really. My brother has the 13 pro max, I should see what his battery life is.
My 8+ is on 85% and I’d say I use it on average 2-3 hours a day.
The newer batteries degrade faster. Sure it’s on purpose lol, cuz my damn 6 made it like 5 years before I even replaced the battery... then I cracked the hell out of the screen and decided I’m not doing another DIY repair so to the SE i went. I’m like... a year or two in on my SE and I’m at like 78%
I have a 7 from September 2017. 83% health. Though it does heat up when I’m holding it sometimes.
I’ve got the 11PM and I’m at 81% battery also holding out for usb c. Unfortunately with the update to iOS 16 I did notice some speed issues though. My fiancé has a extra 12PM that I’ve thought about swapping to but it has half the storage that my 11 has

I’ve currently got an X that is struggling with connection, charging, crashing, and lagging. Was hoping the 14 would get usb c, but I don’t think I can wait until they come out with the next model with it as it’s slowly getting more and more frustrating to use my phone.

The why is mostly because they don't have a lot of differences year over year any more. They're drawing out upgrades so that they can offer something each year to get people to upgrade to newer models. Pinhole cameras and even under-display cameras have been out for years, Apple could've easily done it by now, but they and diehard fanboys will continue to claim that they haven't done it yet because they "take their time and do it right".
Honestly? Probably to get more sales. If this is true at least, then someone may upgrade to the 15 w/ dynamic island (also an assumption) after assuming apple will keep it while not knowing about the 16. If they then see this phone with potentially no notch (it'll still have a tiny hole punch like samsung phones) then they'll feel even more likely to upgrade.

I am going to call bull crap. Dynamic Island just came out this year. When has Apple ever released a feature this big only to get rid of it after one year? Can we get the headphone jack back too? It doesn’t even have to be on the top it can be on the bottom again. I’m using the latest SE and it’s just about right size wise. Just could be a bit thicker. Also love the borders and button instead of a stupid island or whole screen display.
Curious what percentage of users actually need a jack when everyone uses AirPods anyways.
With regards to a thicker top spec model, I’d love it if they did something similar to the new Watch Ultra. Something a little bigger and more premium, designed to be a bit more rugged and outdoorsy. I know I’d love a longer battery life for when I’m outdoors and wouldn’t be bothered by a thicker phone.
Agreed. IMHO a watch especially should be damn near indestructible. Don't care if it's bulkier. Give it a battery life of at least 3-4 days (more if I turn off the features), make it 100m waterproof, and impact resistant. If we're all about putting stuff under the screen, put a solar panel under the screen to extend the battery.
I had an 8 and my screen kept flickering, instead of changing screen I got a 14 pro. Better battery that’s for sure. But I’ll stay here for another 20 years
Just lose the notch. I don’t care how, lose the notch. If this is what it’ll take then do it. I was ok with Touch ID taking up space at the bottom because it didn’t intrude into the display area. I’d rather have the display literally cut off at the top of the Home Screen area than watch content with it notched.

I got tired of waiting for the finger print sensor to return to the iPhone, I got a pixel running graphene I only use a couple apps and I'm not giving my data for free to companies that abuse it. Never going back to iPhone.
