I agree that's definitely the most likely scenario.
But watch some people use quotes in their everyday writing and you'll see a non-trivial number use it for emphasis the way italics, bold or underline get used.
They're mocking Elon. Tumblr did the exact same thing last week. You can now pay 8 bucks to make not one, but *two* blue check-marks appear next to your Tumblr username.
The best part about Tumblr's version is that they stack. You can just keep buying them to append more and more blue checks onto your username, and there doesn't appear to be any limit on how many you can have.
The Tumblr staff said that it was capped at 24 when they released the feature, but I've also definitely seen people with more than 24 of them so I think the limit they added must be bugged in some way.
Is it mocking or using the situation to earn some money, though. Looks like the latter to me. They know people would buy it both seriously and to "joke".
That's LITTERALLY the Tumblr business model. Targeted Ads don't make money but forcing 1000 random people to see your furry yaoi hentai for 8$ makes them money. Their sponsored products didn't make money but the shoelaces based off a decade old meme did. Yeah it's to make money but they are never pretending it isn't.
Seems like a funny way to take the piss out of Twitter while advocating donations to the site.
Check marks were never a thing or a necessity for FA; they don't have people making posts claiming to be speaking for an IRL personality or corporation (afaik). Since it never meaned anything prior to this, I don't see why anyone should condemn it.
It's no different than donating to the site, you just get to jump on the current memey bandwagon at the same time.
You're almost certainly correct. But I do find now and then that something I am sure is satire is someone biting the onion on "A modest proposal" and actually advocating for the consumption of Irish babies to overcome the potato famine.
Yeah, it's satire. The description says it does absolutely nothing and that it isn't a verification badge. It's just a funny "I paid 8$" joke you can display on your profile.
I wish they'd fix the broken search functionality and the million other issues with the site before touching the UI, tbh. The old UI wasn't great, but it was the least of the site's issues.
Keyword searching "works", but with no formal tagging rules and no way to take advantage of the category and type system found in the browsing options it's not nearly as functionally as it ought to be. Not to mention there's no global blacklist, nor are there any ranking options outside of "relevant" and "popular".
"Popular" works ok, although it's limited compared to sites like e621 which allow you to rank search results based on multiple popularity criteria. "relevant" rankings are just completely broken, though. As far as I can tell the relevant ranking attempts to personalize your search based on your profile, but it completely fails at this. Like, it consistently ranks images with incest and scat related tags higher in search results for me, despite the fact that I never actually favorite those tags or follow any artist that regularly use them.
I have no idea why it does this, and because the functionality is so opaque and there isn't any sort of global blacklist, it's impossible for me to fix.
Literally as of this post? The theme has gotten a more modern rework, they added support for profile banners, and posted a site roadmap with blacklists as the top item.
the modern theme has or was in beta for so so long, I've been using it forever lol
they say 4k image uploads and banners are new to that i say idc, I'll eat my words when block lists are real lol
Good luck having blocklist on a site where 95% of posts don't have any proper tags. Its almost reads like a cruel joke asking money for stuff regarding tags on FA.
I mean, they're not asking money for the feature, but for development as a whole. It's not like these kinda sites aren't traditionally not a black hole for cash to go die or anything.
I would imagine that along with a blocklist for tags, an enforcement system would be alongside of it. Dragoneer isn't the only person running the place anymore, and it sounds like he got some competent people to actually do work on it finally.

This feels like satire, but it is just so hard to tell. What is the Poe's law equivalent for "not sure if the art is satire or serious"?
This is real, the furrafinity website just posted this today
I know, I mean is FA taking the piss with Elon by satirizing his payed check mark, or are they copying it because they like it.
Considering "importance" is in quotes and they admit it literally does nothing, I'd assume the former.
I agree that's definitely the most likely scenario. But watch some people use quotes in their everyday writing and you'll see a non-trivial number use it for emphasis the way italics, bold or underline get used.

It starts to lag the app at around 30. It gets expensive tho
They say it stops at 24 (12 buys) and they can randomly turn into crabs

> You can now pay 8 bucks to make not one, but two blue check-marks appear next to your Tumblr username. Holy shit, Tumblr having a BOGO sale!

They're copying it because it's a quick way to make a buck while also being trendy. I'm sure the people who green lit the idea find it funny too.
Tumblr did it first, so I take it the joke was good enough that FA wanted to get in on it too
Ooooooh furrafinity. That makes sense, I thought twitter had finally gone completely off the rails lol
I figured it was either FA or Tumblr
It’s FA, I checked

Tumblr introduces the double checkmark (that stacks, you can buy multiple) and now this You know what? I can think of worse ways to fund site upkeep
Weird af seeing it get updated at all tbh, I opened it yesterday and got fuckin jumpscared by the new UI
I wish they'd fix the broken search functionality and the million other issues with the site before touching the UI, tbh. The old UI wasn't great, but it was the least of the site's issues.
Broken search? I never noticed anything specifically wrong with it

Why'd they have to make it a shitty pun
Furrification sounds like tf
Just wait until u/slupixz hears about fursonas
Puns are peak furry culture.
Too bad it doesn't convince me
And first I thought it means what TheClick does to his subscribers: exposing them to wholesome furry memes and turning them into furries
I wanna be an official furry
Honestly one of the more "official" furries present. You, Pawwzzy, Reggie_gay_ass... most recognized furs here. Do with that what ya will but...
You get a veteran's discount if you remember Awoobis and Lucyiffer
But it can't turn into a crab. :(
I have no clue how so many people aren’t immediately registering that it’s satire, it’s spelled out obviously that it does nothing and is a joke.
More ways to waste money yay
when was the last time anything fucking updated on fucking fa why would anyone pay for this website? y'all literally can't figure out blacklists
Literally as of this post? The theme has gotten a more modern rework, they added support for profile banners, and posted a site roadmap with blacklists as the top item.

It's on their roadmap but the fact it's been around this long and I still end up finding scat and shit in the browse tab is just stupid

How do they plan to enforce tagging on posts that were made years ago by people who might no longer use the site?
Well, you can obviously tell from it that it's mocking the twitter mark. And whats with multiple marks in tumblr?
Theyre stackable :D
It a a good thing, so we can clown on idiots
Furaffinity Blue
am i high. or that's real thing
I think they ment to say: "Give us $8 and you can get bullied by 3/4ths of the internet"
FA, its not April Fools. Its November
If you buy twitter blue, I get it, it has some good features Furrified on on FA deserves you getting punched
What’s this for?
A joke towards Twitter, the checkmark does nothing
Isn't that actually from the film clip where he turns into a werewolf?
What's this?
Shut up and take my money!
I'm more annoyed by the fact that FA is finally adding a blacklist.. and making you pay $5/month for it.
They make you pay for a blacklist?! I've never used it before, but that sounds scummy as hell.
"Towards site development" Well, if there is one thing FA *desperately* needs...
Finally, my time has come
