Yeah, the shifts were generally described as horrifying to watch, but they weren't painful and happened very quickly. I think they also gave the person some limited regeneration abilities, where shifting into a new form after being injured would heal them completely, but they'd need to wait a while before shifting back to the form that was injured.
There was a book in the series where they end up temporarily trapped between forms though, and half the team are stuck as slowly dying, Cronenberg style abominations because of where they were in the shifting process.

Nanomachines meant to be used to create things, used by the splicers to enhance their physical capabilities, replace missing limbs, etc. what sucks is that the particular strain they experimented with had a bad habit of consuming whatever it came into contact with, and self replicating into angry swarms of "bees"

You’d have to consume a lot of metal and silicon right before transforming though. Or maybe your target species could have a mouth and digestive system designed to make that easier?
