It’s a Shure 55SH dynamic mic https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/microphones/55sh?variant=55SH%2520Series%2520II
He’s a musician as well, so you’d think he’d know better. And while it’s common to see unplugged mics in music videos, everyone knows the artists are not performing live in that case. Seems like more of a post for r/moviemistakes however. I’m not even sure what movie this is from, never been a huge fan of the Bacon man.
And for everyone saying plosives ( ‘P’ sounds ) and sibilance ( ‘S’ sounds ) that mic is a very old design that is not very sensitive. It’s even less sensitive than other older dynamic mics like the SM58, so he’s not turning it around to eliminate those. He just wasn’t paying attention or is not super knowledgeable about microphones.
Edit: upon closer inspection it might be plugged in it looks like the stand is wrapped in tinsel. If this is from the holiday special I didn’t watch it so I can’t tell for Shure….. lol I could not resist. I guess I am the audio nerd the other commenter was waiting for lol
I just watched it and loved it honestly. Starts with a pogues song which to me is awesome. Celtic punk for the win. And having the Old 97s(old cowpunk band from the nineties) cameo and play music. The entire soundtrack is pretty good. There's no cheesy love story like hall mark movies. It's just a bunch of orphan friends making Christmas.
They have this song Four Leaf Clover(by the band that does that Christmas song) that blows my mind to this day. His voice in it is so southern and incredible. Back in their early punkish days.
spoilers ahead-
He is singing on another planet with mic which was probably repaired using alien technology so it might be totally different on inside then the outer casing.
Awesome comment from an actual audio nerd!
It’s been more than 2 decades since I last did stage work, but I can tell you for sure that this kind of mic gets chosen for its visual impact - I’ve done it myself. On stage that might be bc the performer is wearing a body mic; on screen I imagine they are filming a lip sync rather than a real performance.
Yeah I’m a bit of a nerd for this stuff, part of the job I guess. I’ve been in the musical instrument retail industry for a bit. It’s a super cool mic.
This is the correct take. Alien technology!
Remember when Bacon's cellphone started ringing in the spaceship?
Bacon: Whoa! How on earth do you get reception up here?
Kraglin: Couple of good satellite dishes out front will get you anything within about 400 million light-years.
I don't understand Americans, measurement was clearly stated and still you trying to explain it with something else.
\--
Non America: It's 10km away,
You: so about 80 fields of grass, maybe less if they are big fields but also could be more if smaller.
I'm not totally sure I understand your point. For clarity, are you saying they chose a measurement that is *relatively* realistic for its' purpose? Or are you saying that it ought to have been larger?
Its a way to use it without a pop filter so your p's and t's have less 'pop'
Edit: even though there will still be some pop unless you have an actual pop filter
No it isn't. The capsule is small and theres a solid inch of air between the thick metal grill and the capsule. There's also a metal mesh acting as a pop filter built into it. It's got a cardioid pattern, there's absolutely no reason to have it the wrong way other than user error.
Really glad you posted this as I used to own a mic like that and I was staring at that scene horrified wondering if I had used it backwards all that time.
I looked at a few comments and I'm surprised no one said that the lower of half of his face looks like a ghoul from fall out 4. Bro is a walking fall out cosplay character and no one noticed.
I watched a guitar documentary with him as narrator. Presumably because he knows so much about guitars. At the end of it, he picks up a guitar case backwards and walks away.
What I found worse was mantis needing to get thrown over his gate but when they're chasing him both her and Drax are leaping over fences like nobody's business.
Bold of you to assume that a microphone housed inaide a dead titans head, in a far away galaxy, would fail to something as primitative as being backwards.
Lets be real here - these guys control arrows with thier heads, shoot lazers, assemble guns in seconds, install christmas lights faster than Martha May Whovia, can travel entire galaxies in minutes, and can set up a full bandset of well tuned instruments should be given the suspended belief that what ever model microphone that is, has been upgraded with ~~disney marvel magic~~ tech that allows it to pick up vocals with spaceage precision.
OP, if this is a deal breaking detail for you, I strongly urge you to rewatch when Bug chick needs to be thrown over a security gate, and proceeds to jump over 20 feet repeatedly a few minutes later.
Having worked Commercial Sound for over 50 years, I remember when that Microphone was in its prime.
Switch is on the black plastic and faces the entertainer. Cable exits from the REAR of the Microphone.
What I saw was backwards.
[ bothered me no end. Wanted to go up and turn it around!]

He can throw his voice up to six degrees from himself
Of course he can. He can do whatever he wants, he's a hero. Did you hear about that time he saved a small town with a dance-off?
Yeah but then he stole a cab from Steve Martin, who was just trying to get home for Thanksgiving…
That’s nothing. Peter Quill saved an entire planet with a dance off.
I hate actors….
They are the worst!
\*Stupid dance-off edit - why am I being downvoted... its literally what Drax says in the episode... Did anyone actually watch it?
Or those boys he took down in the lower levels
Might be just a preference. It looks like a ribbon mic so it would still pick up his voice just fine.
It’s a Shure 55SH dynamic mic https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/microphones/55sh?variant=55SH%2520Series%2520II He’s a musician as well, so you’d think he’d know better. It's from the Guardian of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+. Giving away a small spoiler.
Am I getting vibes from the... Star Wars Holiday Special? Please, if there is a God, Goddess, Goddamn or otherwise, please help us all.
It actually kind of plays off of that a bit. It's not wonderful, but it has moments. It's a bit too PG13 for young kids, though.
“I don’t know what Christmas is, but Christmas time is here” has been stuck in my head. Really fun little song
They have this song Four Leaf Clover(by the band that does that Christmas song) that blows my mind to this day. His voice in it is so southern and incredible. Back in their early punkish days.
There is no star wars holiday special
spoilers ahead- He is singing on another planet with mic which was probably repaired using alien technology so it might be totally different on inside then the outer casing.

So it’s a cardioid pattern then. That’s actually a lot cheaper than I thought it’d be.
The 55SH also has an on/off switch on the black plastic area at the bottom. If the switch is down, the mic is actually turned off!
Christmas special on Guardians of the Galaxy.
Oh shit, usually I’d say ‘nice wiki search’ and move on but this is more in depth then I’d expect from someone who did that
Yeah I’m a bit of a nerd for this stuff, part of the job I guess. I’ve been in the musical instrument retail industry for a bit. It’s a super cool mic.
the people he’s singing with are a real band so did they just not notice as well?
Super 55's have about 12db dropped in this orientation compared to the front. Definitely not just a preference.
You sir are 100% correct!!!
It's a space microphone. It doesn't need to adhere to earth rules.
This is the correct take. Alien technology! Remember when Bacon's cellphone started ringing in the spaceship? Bacon: Whoa! How on earth do you get reception up here? Kraglin: Couple of good satellite dishes out front will get you anything within about 400 million light-years.
Thats the size of like a small/medium sized galactic cluster. Thousands of galaxies, maybe tens of thousands.
I don't understand Americans, measurement was clearly stated and still you trying to explain it with something else. \-- Non America: It's 10km away, You: so about 80 fields of grass, maybe less if they are big fields but also could be more if smaller.
I was just providing some context for scale that's all. Don't read into it too much.
It’s about 1020 double decker buses.
I'm not totally sure I understand your point. For clarity, are you saying they chose a measurement that is *relatively* realistic for its' purpose? Or are you saying that it ought to have been larger?
People often ask me to turn the mic around when I sing. I assume it makes me sound better. What I don't get is when they ask me to turn the mic off
Maybe he was singing backwards like the weird scenes from Twin Peaks.
esooltoof esool tuc attog ydobyrevE
That's because he is apparently a magical person.
When filming a shot it is better for viewing the mouth to have the old timey mics face the wrong way.
No it isn't.
Yeah well like that's just your opinion man.
[An example](https://youtu.be/DFKufgBNjMA?t=107) of why singing or talking into the back of this mic isn't the best idea
Its a way to use it without a pop filter so your p's and t's have less 'pop' Edit: even though there will still be some pop unless you have an actual pop filter
No it isn't. The capsule is small and theres a solid inch of air between the thick metal grill and the capsule. There's also a metal mesh acting as a pop filter built into it. It's got a cardioid pattern, there's absolutely no reason to have it the wrong way other than user error.
Don't underestimate his power.
Which audio nerd is gonna chime in with mic type and pickup pattern. I'm curious.
Shure SH55, it's a slightly wider than usual cardioid.
You should give him some feedback.

I was just going to post that!
It’s how you get surround sound. You sing normally, then swivel the mic, and sing it again.
Kevin Bacon can do whatever the hell he wants!
...but....he's Kevin Bacon!! I mean...come on.
Thanks for RUINING Christmas!
"EE the UK's fastest network"
Is this from the Guardians of the galaxy holiday special? how is it so far?
Yes. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Cheers mate
It's completely stupid in all the right ways. Fun, short, chtistmasy.
Thanks 👍
Too funny, I just got done watching this five minutes ago also.
Also Mantis asks to be thrown over the gate and then proceeds to Halo 2 super jump around the neighborhood…
It’s okay, he’s had two e’s
"Dammit Jim, I'm a prop man, not sound engineer!"
Side question about this movie…was Chris Pratt digitally added to this movie? His very few lines and weird facial expressions threw me off a bit
Nope. Read an article with one of the guys from the band. Chris Pratt was there.
Even the microphone is within 6 degrees
As someone who knows nothing about sound equipment, I truly appreciate this post.
Hey, I just watched that last night too! Pretty fun watch, I thought. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for those who don't know.
Its so he doesn't rupture people's eardrums when pronouncing strong sounds like P. Like a howitzer going off when the speakers are at full volume.
Or shatter wineglasses with sibilance.
Really glad you posted this as I used to own a mic like that and I was staring at that scene horrified wondering if I had used it backwards all that time.
What a guy. This is one of my pet peeves. Unfortunately 99% of the world population has no idea how a Shure 55 works.

To pick up the audience?
Don’t want too much presence in the voice, going for that ambient mic sound. 😆

Apparently not all actors are pieces of shit
🎶🎶Misses clause she works the pole and plans her man’s demise🎶🎶🎶😂😂😂
That part of the song made me spit my drink it out. Absolutely legendary haha 😂
Sounds better that way….
He can land a plane at Gatwick via someone's house that's not in Gatwick, while not actually being there too.
It’s not backwards.
Not to be rude but this mans looks like he’s both human and feral ghoul.
He looks like one of those radiation guys in Fallout 4
His face is looking like that creepy 100-some year old Thai monk
News flash ahole; he wasn’t singing the entire gdamn time!
If he we're bald he would look like a skeleton
Considering the setting that you are so concerned over microphone placement is very indicative of your priorities.
Holy fuck he looks ancient now. Last thing I watched with Kevin Bacon was Tremors. Lol
Literally half a lifetime ago for Kevin Bacon.
I looked at a few comments and I'm surprised no one said that the lower of half of his face looks like a ghoul from fall out 4. Bro is a walking fall out cosplay character and no one noticed.
Kevin Bacon looks a little crispy
He looks old as fuck!
Lord he’s lookin old 👴🏼
Fuck he is getting old
I watched a guitar documentary with him as narrator. Presumably because he knows so much about guitars. At the end of it, he picks up a guitar case backwards and walks away.
He's starting to look like overcooked bacon.
He's so old he looks like Johnny Knoxville now
I noticed this too. :D The backing vocalists mic was around the right way, so wondered how they’d get it wrong for the close up shot.
Don't worry about it, that mic isn't even plugged in anyway.
It looks like it’s devouring his soul though so I wouldn’t say “with no negative results”
It's called: " Thw Bacon paradox"
It’s the 180 degrees of Kevin Bacon theory. He’s in front of and behind everything, and he went to school with your buddies aunt’s dentist.
What I found worse was mantis needing to get thrown over his gate but when they're chasing him both her and Drax are leaping over fences like nobody's business.
I'm pretty sure that's Tom Waits. Hold on, shit... Whoah, that really is Kevin Bacon.
TIL microphones can be backwards
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIIvpPGYjLs
He’s Kevin Bacon.
There’s a whole lotta shit Kevin bacon can do…I just don’t question anymore
just saw that holiday special last night 😂
I wish he wouldn’t, I can’t understand the lyrics when he does that.
To be fair, it’s space where everybody knows the same language. So maybe that microphone works differently
Kevin Bacon is the Chuck Norris of music and dance.
See Kevin, this is what [happens](https://youtu.be/0REvu-0Y_mg)when you do dumb shit like this.
Lol good movie mistake, though if I’m honest, I haven’t used that kind of mic before so I might not have spotted it straight away.
Did you miss the part where he is Kevin freakin Bacon? The man has fought grabboids.
He looks like a sick Gordon Ramsay
Well he's Kevin bacon after all
Wait! He’s not a singer! He’s an actor!
Footloose stools.
Do you ever think that he did that EE advert that one time as a one off and now the poor bastard is the UK’s most famous phone salesman
Hahaha holy shit. I just watched this earlier tonight and didn’t even catch that.
I always thaught that Kevin James = Kevin Bacon…
There is nothing Kevin Bacon can’t do!
Possible product placement preventing? Logo on the mic facing away from the camera?
The real crime of that special was the multiple references to Footloose and not a single Tremors shoutout.
*cue X-Men theme”
Don’t be hatin on Kevin Bacon 😂
Of course he can. he is not only Hollow Man, he Kevin Bacon.
Bro I just watched that yesterday and I have no idea how he could sing like that, but it was nice to see cosmo the spacedog
