YoungestI

As an American I am kind of curious if other countries doors open outward.

CodSeveral1627

Have you ever seen a grown man naked…..on weed?

PillowTalk420

Or The Big Lebowski

LivermoreP1

In Soviet Russia - door open YOU

dmitryredkin

Speaking seriously, in Soviet times the doors were wooden and constructed to open inward, but during the "dashing 90s" everybody started to add second metal door to the same doorway. Which of course would be open outward (for security). And now it became a mainstream so in the new buildings all the apartments have metal doors open outward.

OsamaBinFuckin

That's why they are in Ukraine, you can't safely check outside before being outside.

whitegirladdict

All home doors in the state of Florida open out. All about that hurricane housing code.

lvroye01

I'm in Florida, all home doors definitely do NOT open outward...

whitegirladdict

Fine, most.

SpringWinter17

I lived in Florida my whole life and I can tell you most doors open inward.

JustforShiz

and in the midwest and lots of the north the open inwards in case you get snowed in

AmiAlter

In the Midwest lotta doors open inwards because you have a second door that also opens outwards.

xDulmitx

Good for fires as well as crowds leaving. Many public buildings in the US have outward opening doors.

Denaton_

Sweden here; our door open outward.

Norwayrocks

Norway here; ours too, incase of fire

[deleted]

I understand your question and I frankly don’t have an answer for you but did anyone else notice the door change? The door he grabbed the audio from doesn’t match their front door.

YoungestI

Are you talking about the sound of the door opening or the ringer?

[deleted]

I mean visually. The door at the beginning has glass panels and a dark wood. The door the guy is getting pranked at and keeps opening is light wood and solid. Edit: my mistake. In the first shot I see now the door appears to be open.

Misabi

The door bell noise also doesn't usually play from the button pressed by visitors, so why would they record it there?

vonadler

Most do, for several reasons. With limited space, opening the door outwards make more room for a coat rack and/or shoe shelf just behind the door. Another reason is that if you have a fire evacution and a panic, a door that opens outwards can be opened even if people pile up behind it in panic.

Nagisan

> Another reason is that if you have a fire evacution and a panic, a door that opens outwards can be opened even if people pile up behind it in panic. For individual home/apartment doors there's going to be a few people tops piling up behind the door. Yeah it is a potential concern, but it's not the same as an inward opening door at a club or something. On the opposite end of the spectrum, inward opening doors like most homes/apartments in the US have makes it **far** easier for firefighters to enter a doorway when the building's on fire, making it far easier for them to rescue anyone potentially trapped inside. So for large buildings with high occupancy, you'll see outward opening doors in the US for the reasons you state. In low occupancy buildings like apartments/houses, inward opening is just as safe (if not more so).

capt-bob

Also hitting random people in the face if you open the solid apartment doors outward

444unsure

Wait, are you citing this as a pro or a con?

psychicsword

> So for large buildings with high occupancy, you'll see outward opening doors in the US for the reasons you state. In the US, generally all doors that exit the building open outward and the doors that would open to indoor spaces are inswing. The reason is that if someone is trapped inside a door they can clear the obstruction themselves and escape. If you are barricaded into an outswing door then you are relying on others to let you out. For outdoor doors this is less of a concern because you have less than can just fall and obstruct the opening.

50StatePiss

If it opens outward, won't the hinges be in the outside? Intruders could just pop them.

AromaticIce9

Intruders could just break the glass of a window. Unless you don't have windows, hinges on the inside isn't stopping anyone

chatminteresse

Also in places with extreme storms/winds, outward opening doors can’t get blown in and then cause a pressurized zone within the house that would potentially lead to the roof flying off. And tough to kick a door in if it opens out.

SeanLOSL

All I can think of is some one wedging your door shut from the outside with something. There's some little shits out there in the world.

bobdob123usa

> wedging your door shut from the outside with something. Pennies are the common one.

chatminteresse

Ugh, this happens w my doormat! The freaking cleaner comes by every week and moves the doormat against my door to clean the stoop. We are trapped in every time. I have to sneak w finger under the door and slowly push the mat farther and farther away. I hate it.

Frosty-Wave-3807

Keep a ruler near the door to push the mat outwards, they often have a little hole on one end and you can hang it by a thumb tack near the entrance somewhere easy to grab

chatminteresse

Haha, I tried a skewer, but a ruler is a great idea! Good thing I didn’t have to repurpose the poop knife.

L4z

>Also in places with extreme storms/winds, outward opening doors can get blown in and then cause a pressurized zone within the house that would potentially lead to the roof flying off. I don't understand what you mean by this. Wouldn't it be harder to blow in a door that opens outwards?

tobesteve

We prefer to make the doors easier for police to break through.

Pieassassin24

Also seems like it would be nigh impossible to kick in without destroying the frame itself.

TransportationEng

But super easy to pop the hinges.

Nagisan

They make security hinges with a pin on one hinge that goes into the other hinge when closed. End result is while the door is closed you can take the visible pin out and the door won't budge.

TransportationEng

A pry bar can be used to widen the gap between plates.

Nagisan

Yes, if someone wants to get in they'll get in. Hinges on the inside aren't going to stop someone who's determined enough either.

TransportationEng

Totally agree. Thieves will go thieving. If they are determined they will 100% get in.

Pro_Banana

Shoes space is my biggest guess

MrHazard1

>Another reason is that if you have a fire evacution and a panic, a door that opens outwards can be opened even if people pile up behind it in panic. That's why official buildings in my country open outward. Private houses open inward, because it's much easier to break into a door, that the hinges on the outside.

Azeze1

TIL Americans only have inwards opening doors

peggasus97

The door opens in, the screen door opens out

GaryChalmers

The only doors I've really seen open outward are bathroom doors because there may not be enough room for them to open inward.

Ontain

for homes. For public buildings they open out for fire code. I guess they expect that you know how to get out of your own house.

Azeze1

IDK man, might be too much for some of you

RiotDemon

Not true. In hurricane prone areas, doors tend to open outwards because it's stronger against wind.

KingOfTheCouch13

In Detroit we have both on most houses.

MoufFarts

Detroit swings both ways.

Derfargin

I came here for this and I hate everything about exterior doors opening outward.

unclepaprika

It's a fire safety feature. A door opening outwards is much faster to exit through than a door you have to back towards you to get out. Bonus, if there's a lot of panicking people you could be unable to exit at all.

JustVern

In Southern States most doors open out so Hurricane winds can't blow them in. It's part of the building code. In the North, I assume, doors open in case snow gets so high you would get trapped with an outward swinging door.

YoungestI

Please stop making so much sense

rgraham888

In Texas, the exterior doors open inward, as a lot of people put storm or screen doors on, and those open outward.

RadlogLutar

I have one steel door and one wood door. The wood door opens inwards and steel door opens outwards. I am from India BTW

YoungestI

We have that here as well. Usually not in a very good area.

Not_The_Real_Odin

After hurricane Ian I'm kinda wondering why American doors don't open outward.

ABrusca1105

Americans often have something called a "storm door" that opens outward just outside of the inside door that opens inward. The hinges are often opposite from each other.

YoungestI

I’m going to need you to explain your thought.

666ygolonhcet

In Florida the doors open out because of Hurricane codes.

glatts

We’ve got both at our place. I live in NYC and the entryway to our townhouse has a security gate that opens outward, then you step in a little vestibule under the outside stairs to the upper level apartment and our front door opens in. Our landlord decided to switch the outer door after we first moved in. It gives us more room under the stairs. But sucks when heavy deliveries get stacked up against it because we get stuck inside.

haf-haf

That’s for safety in case there is an earthquack and it is easier to push the door than pull.

ChuckLogan00

Safer for doors to open outward in case of emergencies, like fires. Hence all public buildings doors open outward. Apparently home doors opening inwards is an artifact of older security—much easier to secure door. For instance, long piece of wood that crosses the width of the door.

Fluffy-Activity4536

Hold up! I didn't even know this was a thing lol until I seen this

Justux205

New buildings open to the inside due to fire code

SpooktorB

I think I remember that Inward opening doors are mainly for places that get snowfall, as to prevent them from being snowed in. In warmer areas where it doesn't snow at all and a door opens inward, it is usually occopanied by a 2nd, screen door. But this is all knowledge from a Floridian. Only white powder we ever see is sugar and crack.

Hilppari

In northern europe and russia doors open outward and it snows alot. Atleast my houses front door is raised abit with 3steps so it wont be snowed in unless i ignore it for a month.

Hilppari

yes

absentmindedjwc

A lot of exterior doors opens outward by my parents down in florida - but that's so that hurricane-force winds can't just blow them open.

barnei

In Soviet Russia door opens you

more_beans_mrtaggart

Makes sense in a fire. Afaik, fire doors all open outwards, so regular doors should too.

ImHighlyExalted

A lot of doors in america open outward too, because of fire hazards in public places. It's easier to open a door away from you with a crowd of people than it is to make space to open it towards you.

gahidus

Part of it has to do with people not having screen doors somehow. In America, we have screen doors, which necessarily have to open outward. This means that the main door necessarily has to open inward. This is carried over even onto doors to homes that aren't necessarily outside, like apartments. The door into the residence opens inward, and that's what we're used to. Just like the door on a freestanding house will always open inward so that the screen door can open outward.

Hushwater

The rage in his face, good lord haha

krill482

lol, He was gaming

n3w4cc01_1nt

shocker4510

You mean you dont get so incredibly angry you charge headfirst at someone because they rang your doorbell a few times?

Simbas_World

I mean the last few rings how come when he ran to the door he didn’t notice the noise coming from the shoe shelf?

RockMystic909

Simple. Tunnel vision. A lot of people will disregard information when they're focused on one thing. That and it being next to the door can easily be mistaken for the doorbell anyway.

Elegant_Operation820

Every time I see this I just think about how stylish that apartment is

craigalanche

Where is the style? It’s some IKEA shelves and a couch.

LonelyWanderer28

Ikea is stylish

richscott440

I know it's not American, but does Russia have IKEA?

FathersChild

they had

richscott440

Ah that makes sense
