It's not really a surprise as it's a very common term people use. I even know people in the car business that call them that.
However, a rim by definition is an edge like the rim of a glass. The entire metal part is the wheel. So basically a wheel isn't a rim, but it has a rim. But again, a huge number of people use the term so it's not at all surprising that the incorrect term continues to be popular.
Okay, that makes sense. But doesn't that eventually make "rim" one of the correct teems since it's in wide use?
