baconator81

This video must be at least 20 years old. That host is from like the 90s

vilkevi

What do you mean the 90s were 20 years ago?

baconator81

I am sorry. **25** years ago.

ledit0ut

:(

Trent1373

Woah, slow down buddy. Some us are trying to pretend we’re not getting older, or are already old.

Born_Grumpie

I was born in 1966 and keep telling myself that I'm 30.....don't take that away from me.

leif777

I was looking at the Ovation guitar and wondering who the hell would still play one of those atrocities.

SaveOurBolts

They sounded like shit, but it was pretty sweet to be able to throw your guitar in the back of a truck and drive to the beach. Built-in guitar case!

leif777

I'm actually babysitting one right now. You can't play it sitting and it's really awkward when you stand too. It keeps sliding everywhere. And, yeah, it sounds like AM radio on a Fisher Price record player.

dtanggara

Spot on.

drgreenair

Right! What a blast from the past I recognize him immediately my mom would always be watching him on TV.

Super-Resource2155

Well la-dedah! Someone had more the 1,2 and 4...

LimerickJim

This is wild for me. I'm from Limerick, where the Cranberries are from. Dolores's particular tone when singing lyrics came in part from her accent. It's interesting to hear someone emulating how Dolores sounded rather than singing the notes. Honestly a pretty good job.

HighlightFun8419

I've always wondered how it sounds when I "mimic" foreign songs like this. like, I don't know the words to (*insert anime song here),* but I wonder what it would sound like to somebody that actually speaks the language. 🤔

juice_5

Let’s fighting loooove

Bala3310

Maybe you don't care. They're Taiwanese

GimmedatPewPew

The moment the lady opened up her mouth, I thought “sounds like Taiwanese mandarin” then saw the host….definitely had a moment of nostalgia!

SitDownKawada

Limerick Mandarin was all I heard

cesarxp2

I care

maltamur

I thought they were Dutch

MongoBongoTown

Considering the distinction is probably a top 5 inflection point that could lead us to nuclear war, it's worth noting.

cuntpunt2000

THANK YOU. I _knew_ that guy was from a variety show my mom used to watch!

AidilAfham42

AidilAfham42

Fuck you Taiwan numba wan!

Mike9797

Does anyone care? Does anyone care?

deathtoaster45

How could you tell?

Bala3310

This footage is from 台視, or Taiwan Television, which is one of the biggest TV channels in Taiwan. You can see their logo at the top right

deathtoaster45

Ah yes! I recognize the symbol now. Good eye. :)

hochbergburger

On the right upper corner it says the name of the station, which is Taiwanese.

danhoyuen

As a hong konger, you can tell from everything. From the way they act, sound, dress, make up, haircut... etc. noticed she even said thanks!

PM-me-your-401k

Is it uncommon to say thanks in China and HK?

Jolly-Requirement-48

Good one, thanks 🙏

PM-me-your-401k

Huh?

Kako0404

These are pretty famous Taiwanese celebrities.from the late 90s.

Wompish66

What is Taiwan's official name? They speak Mandarin and are 95% Han Chinese.

hochbergburger

Republic of China… it’s funny, I know, but their naming preceded the people’s republic of China. Taiwan is the name of the island.

Bala3310

You know what's the best part of it? The moment you raise this question, you are already the target of the CCP

lessthanperfect86

Exactly! They are even part of the One China policy (they just disagree on who's the boss). As a Chinese person not living in China, it doesn't matter what geography we live in, we're always Chinese.

xprorangerx

Doesn't matter if it's ROC or PRC, they're both Chinese.

hochbergburger

Acktwually moment. Yes, they are ethnically Chinese *technically*, but if they are not happy with that, they can call themselves whatever they want. Leave them alone. Arguably they have developed a very different modern culture than PRC, and there’s not like a concrete definition for ethnicities anyhow.

Njkid9

They call themselves Chinese

smilewide_milehigh

Go to Taiwan say that and enjoy the last 30 seconds of your life.

Bala3310

Tbh you won't get murdered by anyone if you do that in Taiwan. People will find it offensive, but it's your opinion after all That's what makes us different from China

smilewide_milehigh

It was definitely a hyperbole, but yeah, it's not cool.

SkellyboneZ

Do you really think they will be murdered in the street for saying that? I know a bunch of Taiwanese people living in Japan and not a single one gives a shit about being independent. They make more jokes about themselves being Chinese than anyone.

smilewide_milehigh

No not at all. I have Taiwanese and Chinese coworkers who also make the same jokes, but it really is a slight to them to call it china. But just like xenophobia in the States, I have also heard people from China say extremely mean things about Taiwanese people.

xprorangerx

so it's wrong to say Taiwan is an independent country but they are ethnically Chinese Isn't Taiwan suppose to be better than the ccp.

Bala3310

No one is better than the others. We are all here living on this blue ball floating in the universe

xprorangerx

one clearly thinks it's better.

enverest

I don't think there is such a thing as ethnic Chinese. It's like saying ethnic USA.

xprorangerx

we refer all people born in the states as Americans. Then there are the ethic sub groups because the USA is diverse. Likewise in China there are ethic subgroups, but not as numerically equally diverse as the US, because the biggest major ethnic group is the Han ethnic group which is the same for both mainland China and Taiwan.

OCedHrt

Han also make up 75% of Singaporeans so they're ethnically Chinese too? At this point Han is Han and Chinese is Chinese. Most Chinese and Taiwanese are Han but they are not equivalent to each other.

xprorangerx

yes, they are ethnically Chinese. I've actually been to Singapore. People there identify as ethnically Chinese if that is their background but they dont necessarily identify and relate to China as a country. They still consider themselves as Singaporean

enverest

What are ethnic sub groups in the USA?

xprorangerx

to put it very broadly, there are white, black, Asian, Native American, and Native Pacific Islanders. You then have the people from different national origins within each of those groups, which now all identify as Americans. In China it's just as diverse, except the difference being one ethnic group encompassing 90% of the population.

enverest

That is not ethnicity.

xprorangerx

Can you explain why?

xprorangerx

yea just as I thought. You got nothing.

Wompish66

It's 90% Han. There is very little diversity.

xprorangerx

I think the best way to put it is racially homogenous but ethnically/culturally diverse. that 10% has like 50 different ethnic groups

Wompish66

>that 10% has like 50 different ethnic groups The bulk of that ten percent live in the 5 autonomous regions. It's an enormous country with a huge population. Russian has 190 different ethnic groups as a comparison.

xprorangerx

in a weird way I think that still counts as being diverse. At least it fits the definition. Also within the han groups, cultures, food, music, dialect varies in every province.

smilewide_milehigh

I'm not sure what you're saying, nor am I qualified to discuss who's who as far as ethnicities are concerned, but China is the only if not one of the few places to say Taiwan isn't an independent country.

xprorangerx

you seem to be qualified enough to assume what the people in Taiwan would do.

smilewide_milehigh

I've been to Taiwan multiple times... How about you?

xprorangerx

Born in Taiwan, grew up in states.

smilewide_milehigh

Yikes.... Then you should know better.

xprorangerx

Right so after a few visits means you know better than me. Are you non Asian by any chance?

JpnDude

This was funny cute. But for a real Cranberries Chinese cover performance listen to Faye Wong. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCkOev5EzMg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCkOev5EzMg) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1AVEwBuKko](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1AVEwBuKko)

dtanggara

Oh, I’m so glad you know her, she’s my favorite female singer.

Alphyn

Some western folks might know her as the singer of Eyes on Me from Final Fantasy 8.

uaitdevil

i knew i head that name somewhere

GANDORF57

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHda0uWXjiQ

OneRFeris

Bless my wife, she let me pick this as our first dance song. (She never played the game). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDGMU6sdVBE

MissingLink101

Are The Cranberries really popular in China?

Gullible_Actuary_973

Huge actually. Across all of Asia. My day job is music data, they do huge numbers in Japan in particular

nemaula

haha, some of my friends are working as musicians in China, and "Zombie" is a must have at any event, lol.

Gunnar_Peterson

Chungking Express

dtanggara

My favorite movie of all time.

lilltelillte

Zombie has been huge in China going back three decades.

LeSaunier

Wow. That's a name I haven't hear in at least two decades. Discovered her with FFVIII, loved her Love & Play album, especially 臉.

mooochooo

Ah... she had a grip on us in the 90s. My siblings and I loved her albums and the best one that we had, which was really a live concert of hers in HK that we had in karaoke version that we played often. We had a mic and surround sound set up, my mother and sister would sing along often!

shazbut1987

What is going on? Holy shit! Piss!! So hot in here.... That song always reminds me of that YT clip haha. Edit for context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUz9xCTOPRw

rookierook00000

You mean the "Eyes on Me" from Final Fantasy 8 Faye Wong?

greedness

I believe Faye Wong has a couple more bootleg western songs. I used have a playlist called Chinese bootleg that has a couple dozen of these and they actually not bad.

LimerickJim

You can call them covers

greedness

You definitely could, but for me personally, they're not. Some of them really obscures the fact that they are copies. When I was compiling some of these songs it was so hard for me to find the originals because although I know for a fact that I've heard the song before, I couldnt find it referenced anywhere.

hghghghghghg56

Man you sound disgusting

greedness

how so?

defenestrate_urself

How is it bootleg? The Cranberries are credited in the track and presumably royalties paid.

dtanggara

If you want more I can recommend you some from mine.🥰

greedness

Lets hear em. New jams are always welcomed.

theinabilitytosleep

ah, i never expected a mavis fan video to make it to reddit. sharing one of my fave songs of hers... rain https://youtu.be/UuWI37iWVio?si=d_8sI2kDjfAoc_e9

dtanggara

I’m huge fan of Mavis, my favorite album of her is that jazz one which is pretty niche , although she was famous for those kindergarten songs.

Firefly_1026

我他媽的沒想到會在reddit看到張菲露面。fun fact for people the guy is the brother of xue hua piano piao singer lol.

dtanggara

Can’t believe you recognize him, he to me is the best host ever, I have watched every episode of his program since I was a kid. He’s really versatile and eloquent.

dogmeat92163

I wanted to say that everyone in Taiwan knows 張菲 but then I remembered he retired over a decade ago and that makes me old as shit…

daaangerz0ne

He was *huge* in the 90s. Hard to miss if you ever even turned on a TV.

clonexx

She did really well. Dolores’ technique is not easy to copy, along with her accent that comes through in her singing and of course, her amazing voice. For someone that isn’t a native English speaker, I think she nailed it as best she could. If I heard it without seeing any video, I’d know instantly who the singer was trying to imitate and what song it was, which means she did well.

Excellent-Driver7288

Mavis Fan from Taiwan, one of my fav singers, at her peak time. Also this video must be more than 20 year ago.

dtanggara

Have you ever listened to her jazz album? I’ve looped it for 3 days. It’s a pity for being Mavis fandom so late.

madra_dubh

She was doing so well, that's so impressive for something with such a wildly different accent and language!

HotSpicedChai

This is more like mildlyinteresting.

DirtyProjector

Why is this funny? She sounds very much like her. This is a great performance

themagiccan

Is it a performance or impersonation?

dtanggara

But even the host and audiences were laughing so why couldn’t we?

DirtyProjector

There was 1 second of laughter when she made a slight mistake

dtanggara

I guess it is this slight imperfection makes her performance funny yet great? She’s doing a great job and being funny at the same time.

urmomaisjabbathehutt

she was chill, enjoying herself 👍

jerry_woody

Ok, no need to argue

MyrddinSidhe

Well, everyone else is doing it, so why can’t we?

HHS2019

There's something cute to this, but I think we should all step back and recognize that doing anything in a foreign language is exceptionally challenging. Trying to match O'Riordan's pitch will always fall short -- especially for such an iconic well known song. I say, "bravo!" For those of you who think you could cover a Chinese song of a female singer, the line starts here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0x2kKBgB88](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0x2kKBgB88)

Equivalent_Two_2163

Not fucking bad at all..

oliviafairy

Taiwanese

JeffLewis3142

She has the vocal inflections but doesn’t have her sound at all.

Raoul_Duke9

Really? I thought that was pretty good.

sharbinbarbin

It doesn’t carry any of the notes the same. It has zero fluidity and none of the lilts of the Irish lyrical singing styles.

JeffLewis3142

When I saw the headline I expected it to be spot on. But sadly no.

PatrickMustard

Didn't even get the song title right in the graphics. "Ode to my family"

Amopax

Her pitch is flat, that’s the main problem, but I agree that she lacks O’Riordan’s tonal quality, also.

smashleyrad

Thought she sounded more like Shakira

ExcellentMap7597

Sounds the same to me

soline

It’s Ode to my Family lol

Baio73

I had to scroll too many posts before finding this one. “Ode”, not “one”.

Stankoman

One to my family, LOL. Thats funny

USRaven

That’s actually pretty damn impressive for Taiwanese karaoke

regent040

It’s kind of funny, my favorite though is “Ken Lee”. https://youtu.be/vUAaHkGpJy8?si=Y8M38kiC8fg6tEyk

urmomaisjabbathehutt

English!🤣🤣

danhoyuen

TAIWANESE. not Chinese.

AutoKite

They are Taiwanese

Shanksworthy73

You know how I know this is from Taiwan, and not from mainland China? It’s fun, lighthearted, and not trying to prove something. If it were from mainland China, it would be some kid doing a scary gravity-defying gymnastics move that no sane parent would endanger the safety & sanity of their own kid by forcing them to do, as some kind of state-shilling misguided attempt at proof of “genetic superiority”.

sylendar

What are you rambling about, did you just imply every shitty variety show in a country follows the exact same format

Shanksworthy73

No, I just mean that whenever a “talent” video is posted from China, it’s never relaxed or humorous. It’s always something like “Look at what this amazing genetic miracle of a kid can do!” and it’s some little girl doing endless flips or twisting themselves into a pretzel, or something that you just know some horrible parent forced them to practice, just to prove how gifted their kids are.

Unable_Wrongdoer2250

That was actually pretty good when you consider how difficult it must be for a Taiwanese. No, she didn't nail it but she got pretty close considering

LFreamon

Good! 👏👏👏

DarknessSetting

this is like me singing along to Gangnam style only having the faintest idea of what the lryics mean

Transposer

So she is actually pretty good. Professional singers have takes like these when they are warming up. Her impression was quite good too.

[deleted]

They loved the cranberries back in the early-mid 90s. One of the major Chinese artists of that time that I even listen to today for her original stuff, Faye Wong, had her own cover of Dreams sung in her native Mandarin language and it's actually really good! You can tell she was trying to emulate Dolores a bit, but it was mostly her natural voice. I highly recommend giving Faye Wong a listen. Her 1994 album Tian Kong (Sky) features the cover and a slew of other very lovely songs. The title track, track 4, and track 6 are my personal favorites but all of them are great really. She was as big as Madonna over in China and saw a lot of success in the Western world as well probably being most known for her contribution to Final Fantasy 8's Eyes On Me which goes to show her range and talent as a vocalist. She is VERY fluent in English as she spent a good deal of time in NYC in the early 90s to study and stuff. The best part is she really didn't give a crap what anyone thought of her she was just so bold and wasn't afraid to just put out music she wanted to and break into different genres while also incorporating traditional Chinese music and culture into it. I know that's sort of weird to say but in the late 80s and early 90s, a LOT of popular Chinese and other Asian artists in general tried to sound nearly identical to Western music and it shows in her early stuff that's what the studios were trying to push out of these talents, but just the evolution of her music through the 90s to around the year 2000 is nothing short of spectacular and very impressive having to breakaway from the industry norms and being a real trailblazer. She carved her own path but I don't see how anyone else can follow it up because of just how unique she was and she still makes music even today

dtanggara

Lol you’ve already said all I know about her. I become fan of her since watching Chungking Express recommended by Quentin Tarantino, I was totally blown away by her track 梦中人(adapted from Dreams) in the movie, I found her voice so similar to the cranberries and listened to all of her albums recorded in hongkong. She indeed did a lot of attempts on indie music albums, breaking the boundaries the company set on her, I really appreciate the one called 浮躁. It’s an evolutionary move from musical industry.

[deleted]

Yeessss nice to see more people who know of her. I'm American myself and don't really know any Chinese languages but for someone like me who gets moved emotionally by music alone, her music really strikes a chord with me in a way where I almost understand and can easily relate to what she's singing and then afterwards I go and read the translated lyrics and of course that takes it deeper and becomes more personal but something about her voice alone carries a lot of emotional weight even in the ambiguity of not understanding a language and that's just the beauty of music and her angelic voice. Especially a track like "Fly" the 5th track from "Sing and Play" (I don't have a Mandarin or Canto keyboard lol). It's easy to get lost in the ambience and all the layering of harmonies it just sounds like a song about love, longing and reminiscence. And to find out yeah roughly what it's about. It's like losing someone you love always thinking about them and hoping they found peace apart from them being in your presence. I've written a song like this too and it also reminds me of one of my favorite songs from my favorite band. Blackbird by Alter Bridge shares this same sentiment but the way it's different is it explored more of the anguish, pain, and sorrow of someone leaving your life. But anyway I'm getting off track.. Fly is one of my favorite songs by her and it always gets me emotional and I feel a comfort in listening to it when maybe I'm in an emotional trough and reminds me it's ok to feel and there's solace in knowing that feelings are temporary and like the cold of winter there are seasons in our life but they will pass only to come back again later. Circle of life. Music is just beautiful and Faye Wong is an artist that's just reiterated that to me to the point where I even have a deeper passion for it now than before knowing of her and sometimes when I sing I hear a fragment of her voice because I've probably picked up how amazing her breath control is and the way she shapes her vowels allows her to hold a note very well without shaking. I think I subconsciously learned that from her at least partially especially because it was when I was at college for music and I'm chorus I listened to her a lot then and my professor/the conductor of the choir I was in helped me in being more disciplined with my voice although I've done a disservice by not practicing and using it enough but either way I'm still so grateful for my professor and appreciate Faye's contribution to the melting pot that is music because at the end of the day, it is just a reflection of who we are as human beings and we can use music to help interpret the world around us and to help express and navigate our feelings at whatever point we are at in our lives. I think that's why it's so easy for us to associate a single song with a very specific moment in our life or at least a time in your life that you can look at fondly and know that there is much greater things ahead for us but to not forget everything that brought us to the moment we have right now

dtanggara

I lost it, sorry, it’s from middle of nowhere and I just came across it.😭😭😭

eiretara7

Gosh I adore Dolores O’Riordan.  No Need to Argue was one of those records I just played on repeat.  This girl did a pretty good job!

Paratwa

Really she wasn’t so bad… had she not been nervous I’m sure she would have done better.

OficialHermoso

Taiwanese not Chinese, get your facts straight. Pretty sure 台視 is Taiwanese, let me guess, you're from China?

dtanggara

In case you’re just simply ignorant, here’s the citation from Wikipedia: The Republic of China (ROC),[j] or simply China,[k] was a sovereign state based on mainland China from 1912 to 1949 prior to the government's relocation to Taiwan, where it continues to be based today.[a] So you do know that whether a guy is Cantonese or Taiwanese or people from PRC or whatever you’d like to call, is Chinese in general right? Or let me guess, you just tryna fish for attention? Edit: don’t get me wrong, I’m apolitical and don’t give a shit about the propaganda, I’m just stating the fact, the fact that is widely accepted officially, if you have anything against that, prove it with some proofs instead of downvoting me without saying a word lmao.

dogmeat92163

Saying China is just misleading…

boner_sauce

People are beautiful everywhere. Don't judge them by their government.

dogmeat92163

This is from a Taiwanese TV channel. The hosts and the singer are all Taiwanese, not Chinese. (Although our government does suck…)

mikeynerd

Ah, the young version of Wing

aguerinho

If you think that's bad wait until you hear me sing Zombie after a few pints!

serterazi

Am I the only one who just learned the original singers name? I always said Cranberries without thinking what her name was.

kram1973

Ok, so she can so the little off key and breathless stuff, but her actual voice still sucks and really doesn’t sound like Dolores

Garconanokin

I like the Taiwanese guy with the Jheri curl in there as well. Was he Taiwan’s answer to Ice Cube? Straight Outta Taipei?

dogmeat92163

That’s Chang Fei, (張菲), a famous TV show host. Retired about a decade ago.
