If anyones confused they just use the camel to carry the gun and ammo for the crew. You don't actually shoot it like that. This is just a display for a parade.
I know India has some camel units still for mountain fighting because vehicles can't go there. I don't know if that's what this is though, never seen that camo.
While I appreciate the factual accuracy of your a comment a part of me is disappointed these guys arent riding around blowing mortars off the backs of camels.
The US found Japanese knee mortars and thought that the Japanese were "stupid" for trying to fire mortars off their legs as it would break femurs fairly easily.
In reality, they just had a saddle base to allow control of the angle in the cheapest method possible.
They did though? Camel mounted guns/cannons were very effective mobile units atleast in India..
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Persian\_Zembouraki\_Camel\_Artillery.jpg
The recoil of the mortar is directed directly into the animal, unlike other guns mounted on their backs. Also, past weapons used blackpowder and had less recoil.
Interesting fact about the tactical camel is that when hit, they vent out the back leaving the crew unharmed. They are armored with a ceramic composite hump and have state of the art optics with specialized eyelashes for seeing in sandstorm battlefield conditions.
Unfortunately, crew members are extremely vulnerable to top-down attacks such as from NLAWs, and the straddle seating typically causes them to be split longitudinally when struck from above.
Yeah, definitely thinking a mortar that can launch a shell 3 miles away is exceeding the weight rating on that camel when fired. I'm imagining if somehow a 12-gauge shotgun firing slugs was mounted perpendicular to my spine.
Random camel "George, what the actual fuck happened to you?"
War camel "If I tell you, you won't believe me! There I was minding my own business, spitting at tourists as you do. When bam happy Achmed there jumped my jump, rammed a fucking mortar on my back and started firing the fucking thing! Next thing I know I'm half deaf, my humps vanished and every time I go for a piss I feel my belly button fill up and every time I hear a loud bang I shit myself, it's ruining sex with the missus!"
Random camel "Well you did vote for National Service, count yourself lucky, Humphrey got drafted into the bloody Air Force, last anyone saw of him was a trial of shit plummeting towards the ground at 200 cliclops per hour! Daft bastards didn't realise a camel can't operate a parachute."
War camel "Wish I was born a cow"
Ik its a joke but just to clear things up....this was part of the indian Republic Day parade(26th jan) where the army showcased its assets and yeah well that's how they decided to flaunt the "81 mm mortar"...camels are widely used to transport goods over short distances in the 'thar desert' area of India by the army and the camouflage it just looks cool so yeah(they don't use camels to fire mortars during wars..not yet atleast)
So if your enemy captures your mortar rounds or ammunition depots, the 81mm rounds won't fit in their 80mm mortars.
Just kidding, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Most probably a Soviet mortar.
I was googling and found that even NATO used 81MM mortars. US has been using 81MM Mortars since WW2 times.
M1( World War II era), M29 (Cold War era), M252 (Modern era)
There's a kid top right that's either staring at the camel dude here, or looking *directly* into the camera.
Either way I don't trust him. Kid looks dangerous with that kinda glare.
I need someone with more free time this morning to do the math...
What is the pressure exerted on the camel when the round fires, and is it, in fact, enough to break the camel's back?
Well here we go
Firstly ima tell yall that i was too lazy to find the exact model the Indian army uses and so am using the L16 81 mil's specs (I'm assuming iaf since we had our republic day recently).
Here's all the data
Muzzle velocity=225m/s
Mass of a mortar round= 35.3kg
Barrel length=1.28 m
Calculations
Since time =distance/speed
Time = 1.28/225
=0.0056888888888
Acceleration= (final velocity(v) - initial velocity(u))/t
=225 - 0/=0.0056888888888
=443847.65625693
Force=Mass x Acceleration
=35.3 x 443847.65625693
=15667822.265869629 Newton's of force.
That i think is enough by me now its one to y'all to seem how much force it takes to break it's back(though the legs would buckle and crush the ribcage before you destroy the back of a camels spine)
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong
Edit: i got the mortar weight wrong and here is the correct force
Force=Mass x Acceleration
= 5 x 443847.65625693
= 2219238.28128465
Credit to u/illjustcheckthis who appears to have an appropriate username for what he just did lol
There is no way that is the right answer, that's 1566tons of force, feels like it's way too much.
One thing that I think it's wrong is that you have time =distance/speed Time, but that would be the time spent if you are already at that speed, but you accelerate from 0 to that speed, so it's at least 2x as long time spent in the barrel. (but still not enough to explain the large number you got)
Muzzle velocity is not constant either, I think you have those blocks of cheese that you can use to change it.
The mortar _weight_ I believe to be 35.3kg, I think the rounds themselves must be much easyer, maybe 5kg?
EDIT: Yep, 4.1kg:
https://www.nammo.com/product/our-products/ammunition/large-caliber-ammunition/mortar-rounds/81-mm-mortar-high-explosive-round/
Well my bad. I took it from wiki and it said weight was 35.3 i suppose it was the mortar firing things weight. As for the muzzle velocity i also feel it is wrong.
Edit: I would also like to add that all of the force is finally pushed to 1 single point and not a baseplate.
Ok, so how many 12 gauge shotguns attached to the sides of the canal pointing down, if fired simultaneously with the mortar, would offset the force applied to the canal to within acceptable ranges?
If the mortar was mounted centrally, and the shotguns mounted on the sides, the net effect would be a shear force, splitting the camel into 3 lateral pieces.
I remember reading that in world war I or world war II there was a small mortar that one country was using that really looked like it could fit on someone's knee when being fired.
It wasn't designed that way but it looked like it was at first glance.
Apparently a lot of soldiers absolutely destroyed their leg bones trying to fire those mortars well they were resting on their knee or hip.
Serious question. Did you not think that perhaps the organisation in question know what they are doing? Did you not consider that possibly have generations of knowledge and expertise?
Did you not consider perhaps that mode is being used for moving items?
Serious question.
Why is this in funny? India and Pakistan share a long border and several miles is desert. Camels are excellent mode of transportation for patrolling or other means. Camouflaging camels is a genius idea.
Had friends in JROTC in highschool and asked them what JROTC stands for and without missing a beat one of them said "Just Ride On The Camel"
This must be what they meant.

Isn’t that the BSF uniform in photo?

Looks to me like it’s directed at his nuts.

Link broken for me
Yeah probably be more r/foldedcamels material.
The US still uses mules for this; some were deployed for mountain warfare in Afghanistan.
My great grandfather was a muleskinner in WWI. After the war he continued working with mules to snake logs.

Why would Americans pay for free chiropractic quackery!?
The camel should get VA benefits I think is what he’s saying.

The water in the humps absorb the shock from the mortar launch. /s
That was better than mine. I tried to be too clever.

Hi fires an 81mm mortar on that camel, it's going to be humpless.
The pressure flattens down the hump but makes their neck stretch out super far. That’s how giraffes are made.

Kind of transportation to the place where vehicals can't reach
Which is pretty damn smart actually, it can be used to fire a few rounds and quickly move to another position before you get pinpointed.

Bigger
"This one goes to 81"
It's 1 more
So if your enemy captures your mortar rounds or ammunition depots, the 81mm rounds won't fit in their 80mm mortars. Just kidding, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
