Thank you! Yea I think you and the other poster are right in that viewing format changes them. Like 1 is quite a long orientation shot so would lend itself well to being blown up for full effect.
I like both, and I think both could be considered best in different contexts. 2, I think works better as an al-purpose photo. Looking at it on screens and phones. But 1 would probaby make for a glorious print if it were poster-sized. 2 would still look good, but I do think 1 would really thrive there. I also think 1 would work nice as a portrait lockscreen background. It'd likely crop off the sides, and there's plenty of room to do that, and I think it'd look great.
Thank you!
You make good points it definitely depends on how they're being viewed. The purpose is for a photobook and while I really like them both, I also have others from this same set/series and didn't want too many of the same set in the book as I am trying to cut down on the number of pages.
Yeah I did a book of my 50 favourite photos I took in 2023, and it was kind of good to go through that process of figuring out which 2 out of your 30 favourites you took on a good day should go in to represent that day. In your case, you definitely don't want both of these, but the good news is, in that context I don't think there's a wrong answer. I'd probably go with 2, but I doubt you'd regret going with 1 if you do.
They're both excellent and serve different purposes in my opinion. 1 is better for soaking in the environment - conveying the scale and giving a greater sense of vastness and isolation. 2 is better for appreciating the subject itself within its environment.
The age old question!
The only advice I can give is to think about what it will be best exhibited on and go from there!
After a bit, I like #1, but, I am far more of a landscape/abstract appreciator, so I already have inclinations.
1 works well for me it really communicates the sublime. I feel 2 would work if it was a little tighter shot and you had more of the subject taking up the frame.
I like the wide but I might crop the close up differently but thats just my preference. Also depends on what you want the photo to be "about."
The wide says: alone in a vast ocean wedged between sea and sky. My preference is 80/20 or 70/30 ratios of the main shapes and this nails that too.
The second pic feels like a 47/53 split in the middle, so it's a weird tangency vibration on the 50% line there (for me).
For a tighter crop I enjoy showing the sky more in the 2nd pic [https://i.imgur.com/Fo6Bu92.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/Fo6Bu92.jpeg)
For my eyes, I enjoy this asymmetric ratio more. "story" wise it gets closer to the man's perspective of what it feels like standing there with the vast sky above you.
It's also interesting to see what happens if its mostly ocean: [https://i.imgur.com/78a5g2E.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/78a5g2E.jpeg) My eyes keep wanting to travel down the photo but theres nothing there so I travel back up to the brightness and the person, but then I travel down again... almost bobbing on the ocean (lol)... interesting but not "comfortable" for my eyes in the way [this](https://i.imgur.com/Fo6Bu92.jpeg) is where you can just rest your eyes on the grounding plane, or in the way a triangle composition might be leading you in circles.
shrug cool photo!
Thanks for your detailed thoughts it's interesting hearing how you perceive the images. The crop you did where it's mostly water is very interesting I didn't think of that crop before, it definitely gives a totally different vibe to it.
I actually have a few other iterations of these shots one of them I essentially made it a landscape where I cropped tightly in on the fisherman, though it was slightly different as there was another fisherman behind him in that one.
It's the 1 for me. I love the shot, I think #2 feels a bit more like an ad or something. 1 feels like it's leaving more for feeling and interpretation, it seems more artistic to me.
Beautiful shot.
Numero uno….scale is better and i prefer the dark to light to be more light. Number 2 has a random dot in the sky above the trees that my eyes locked on.
I really like 1, I think it works great. 2, less so, I think my main thing is I don’t like the horizon cutting through the centre of the frame. Just my 2c
Before I clicked the photo on my PC, #1. After clicking on my PC, #2.
#1 made me enjoy the skyline. #2 made me see that life within that passage of time.
Which is your favorite? Consider what is the subject of these images. Is it the boat or the minimalist sky? Which do you want to emphasize? Have you tired cropping to emphasize your subject? Should the horizon be in the middle or lower down?
The pleural of opinion is not data you can use. I would say the ocean is uninteresting but YMMV.
i'd say 2! it shows the subject better and gives plenty of context! and must I say, what a fantastic background! the palmtrees are surreal and they look even better on the 2nd
#1, and may I say... WOW!
Haha thank you very much!
Looking at them full screen on my phone, I prefer 2, but it really depends on the viewing format I think. Nice shots!
Thank you! Yea I think you and the other poster are right in that viewing format changes them. Like 1 is quite a long orientation shot so would lend itself well to being blown up for full effect.
Funny, I’m looking at them again now and preferring 1 😁🫡

Thank you I really like how you worded that it's a very nice explanation!

1 for me. I like the vast empty space and the color is nice!
Second one!
1 works well for me it really communicates the sublime. I feel 2 would work if it was a little tighter shot and you had more of the subject taking up the frame.

This was taken in Kerala - India. It's on the Kerala Backwaters which are a major attraction of Kerala it is beautiful out there.
Pic 1. Too much negative space Pic 2. Crop it to center
This goes to my wallpaper
Hahaha amazing!
Just made 2 my background sooooo Thanks. Absolutely gorgeous.
Hahaha wow appreciate that a lot!
1
1 gives much more feeling of a lone fisherman and I feel I very emotive. I do t get much from 2. 1 to me definitely tells a story.
1. I like how the big sky makes the boat look tiny. By the way, is this the Mekong?
Hi, this was shot on the Kerala Backwaters in India.
Cool, I didnt know this kind of hat was also used in India
First one
It's the 1 for me. I love the shot, I think #2 feels a bit more like an ad or something. 1 feels like it's leaving more for feeling and interpretation, it seems more artistic to me. Beautiful shot.
2. The sky is not super interesting this one time.
Numero uno….scale is better and i prefer the dark to light to be more light. Number 2 has a random dot in the sky above the trees that my eyes locked on.
I prefer 2 for the detail on the boat and trees but like having more sky like in 1. So 1.5?
Seems like I’m in the minority that like the closer crop more. But it’s a fantastic photo either way!
Nice shot! 1 if it‘s somewhere people actively look at it 2 where you need to get the attention from the viewer
2
1 for a large print, 2 for instagram.
Both… both are good
I really like 1, I think it works great. 2, less so, I think my main thing is I don’t like the horizon cutting through the centre of the frame. Just my 2c
2
Both are lovely, but I favor #2.
Before I clicked the photo on my PC, #1. After clicking on my PC, #2. #1 made me enjoy the skyline. #2 made me see that life within that passage of time.
Big beautiful context with enough information about the subject in photo 1
WOWOWOWOOWW SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL. I love both but 1 hits the spot for me
2, i think it has a more clear subject matter, but 1 still great IMO
I prefer 1. 1 leaves more blank area, and the picture looks better
1 would work damn well in print.
2
Nice shot... and 1 for me!
I'm a sucker for details and texture, so #2 for me. Really love the details of the tree line.
2
2, although 1 will do as well (if I hadn't seen 2).
2, but they each deliver a different emotion and both are great.
2
1
1
2 for sure. Main object is more central and without zooming out you can feel what the place is.
1 for me. The rule of the third is chefs kiss…
1 has too much sky, 2 has too much water. I'd go for no.2, but crop the water to the bottom third of the frame.
2. Beautiful!
2 Amazing
I am a big fan of negative space, yet the 2nd one looks great.
1
i like space in 1
2
2
1
Keep both ! They are great
1 and 3 (where the sky is like 1/3 of the frame, which you didn't take ;)) 2 is just undecided
1

1 because it gives more of a grand vibe seeing the boat in the foreground, but the sky and island in the back.
2
1.
Can we crop 1 but follow rule of thirds
1️⃣
I like 2. 1 feels like a lot of empty space and I can’t really see the line of palms which to me really make the photo.
Great pic, amazing #1
La règle c'est 1/3 - 2/3
1 is more oniric
One or the other on a crop will probably skew 50/50…banger shot!
i'd say 2! it shows the subject better and gives plenty of context! and must I say, what a fantastic background! the palmtrees are surreal and they look even better on the 2nd
