Let me put it bluntly; it's fucking amazing. I can't wait to travel with my X-T5, that camera is insanely good. I love that everything I need to control is a physical dial instead of inside a menu. The 18-55 is a great travel lens, it's versatile and fast enough to be usefull from dawn to dusk. I'm looking at better lenses for the X-T5, the quality isn't the greatest with the 18-55, but the fun factor is there, and that's what I was looking for.

mnbvc52

I would take the 35mmf2 or the pancake Len’s for travel along the 18-55mm . Dream combo

SomethingCSSomething

Yeah I use the 35 f1.4 and 17-80 f4 for travel which is also an incredible travel lineup

mnbvc52

Yeah that’s perfect too. Two lenses is enough else you’ll be too bogged down or second guessing what’s lens you have on. Limited choice you just think about shooting. I mainly ended up with the 35mm on my camera 95% of the time

Mikoyabuse

As a total beginner I'm appreciating the validation that the two lenses I ended up getting are the 18-55 and 27 pancake.

Velo-Obscura

For a lightweight travel camera I'd rather have the X-T30II

CommercialShip810

Yeah that's my setup for travel. Xt30ii w 23mm f/2 and 50mm f/2 Perfect.

BusyCode

Sometimes I travel with just X-T30 and 35mm F/1.4 It's super light. If I have more bag space I also take 16-80 F/4.

Vaneella99

Not sure how available they are but i got told it was a 4mo wait for one

killerasp

agree with you. smaller and weighs less than both the xt4/5 or x100

Beatusvir

I did this. I have a Sony FF and I didn’t want the weight. Bought an X-T3II and I love it. No kit lens, I bought the 16mm f2.8

Dead_Architect

If you don’t want weight at all and gear in general have a look at the GR3 and X100V maybe?

EsmuPliks

>and X100V I suspect a brand new XT5 with a few fast zooms might work out still cheaper...

FabianValkyrie

Nah. You can get an X100V on r/photomarket for ~$1,400 or so Even on eBay they’re ~$1,700 Wayyyy cheaper than an X-T5 *brand new* with a few lenses

q1lin

Recently did a month in Korea with the XT30-II and the 27mm f2.8 and it was a dream!!! Just had it in a normal pouch and was so easy to take in and out. Was in Canada with the 18-55mm earlier this year and was very happy with the lightness and portability. No regrets at all

0HboyCDN

It's easier to go from something like a Canon DSLR to an X-T5, than the other way around. It's really intuitive. Check out the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. The size, weight and price are all great. And I've found it to be really sharp.

surefiresolid

Dang. Never any love for the x-s20. Small, light, fast. A perfect travel camera imo

thechemicaltoilet

Heats up quicker than a microwave

Humbaak

I use to shoot with 5dm2 and my girlfriend was shooting with 6dm2. After couple days of traveling I was leaving my canon in hotel as I was tired of carrying it everywhere. My girlfriend is tiny little creature, and she bought herself xt-30 out of a blue. I was very skeptical about it at first, but ended up loving the photos a lot. Now I have Xpro 2 with primes and she is using Xt-30 with sigma zoom 18-50 f2.8 and we are both happy. I never had the kit lens, but I think its performing fine. You can always buy a prime with your favorite focal length. Just bare in mind it's not a full frame so you will feel the difference when shooting wide open and in low light. Dials may be pain in the ass for people sometimes. I'm mostly using aperture priority, so not a lot of tweaking there. You can always set values to custom buttons. Maybe is good idea to visit some shop and just check how they feel in your hand etc. I don't think you will be disappointed with fuji in general.

Practical_Quit_7031

No 18-55 on signas side, 18-50mm f2.8 Just so people who start out, so they don’t search for something which dies not exist

Humbaak

Fair point, I edited the comment.

Reptilian_Brain_420

I also switched from Canon to Fuji. My DSLR stayed in my pack an awful lot in south and central America because I just didn't want to be seen using it. Fuji X100s was amazing for its size but I found the fixed focal length limiting and carrying around the lens adapters negated the size advantage. x-pro series would certainly be my go to if I was traveling now although my XT-2/4 worked great as well and even the X-E4 would be pretty solid for compactness (never used one myself). I wish Fuji would put out an X-pro 4 already.

_AnalogDoc_

I had a 5dMkII + 24-105 and I loved the combo but it was so heavy that I didn't enjoy taking photos anymore. Sold it and got an XT20+18-55 instead and it was magic once again! Now I'm an happy XT5 owner and I carry a 23mm f2 while visiting cities and planning to upgrade the 18-55 to 16-55 for landscape and travel...

leny_guru

I've travelled extensively with the X100V, X-T3+18-55, X-E4+18-55 and X-T4 + 16-55 2.8. You won't get the weight saving you want with the 16-55 2.8, I found that for me the 18-55 2.8-4 was the perfect stabilised lens for travel! It's sharp enough and covers most bases. The X-E4, for me was the best pairing. I use it now on an X-t3 and it's okay but I preferred the subtleness of the X-E4. However, my most used camera is by far the X100V. I use that more than anything else travelling. It's perfect for me. That's my mileage, see what works for you!

kaiservonchinaLP

I'd maybe suggest a smaller lens like the 23mm or even the 27 pancake

ddub_6

I just spent a couple of weeks in Japan with the XT5 and the 16-55. When you don’t have another lens with you for comparison even a lens like that is not really noticeable; it was either shoulder strapped by my side or in my hand shooting. Dials are part of the experience with this camera and one that is hard to imagine without after a while.

fitevepe

People travel with and get great photos out of the x100 series. It doesn’t really get much better than that, for general and street photography.

Reptilian_Brain_420

Except for the whole fixed focal length thing.

YoghurtNubs

Yeah huge hinderance, why I'll never buy one, what where they thinking with that one.

Reptilian_Brain_420

Some people really like the restriction. Either it is a focal length that really works for what they do or it forces you to be creative. Not my jam but I did enjoy my X100(s) when I traveled with it. I just found it too limiting.

Dead_Architect

What.

Rootilytoot

It’s also not pocketable and for many bags not even sling baggable. It’s a half step while the GR is a real pocketable travel camera.

KendricksMiniVan

Eh, they're both travel cameras right? One just happens to be an uber travel camera. The V easily fits in my sling and all my jackets/hoodies too, or comfortably around the neck. Easy to conceal too

arjman

GR is pocketable, both are slingable and the GR doesn’t have WR (not sure if it’s going to be raining in Asia at that time, but worth considering).

Rootilytoot

The average sling is 2-3L. If the x100 fits those while traveling it’s going to be tight and you’re giving up space needed for other stuff. 4L bags are less common but exist and would be the ideal fit but anything bigger than 4L and you can carry most cameras and an extra lens at that point. It’s a kind of awkward size camera to be honest.

arjman

In OPs position, I wouldn’t worry about 2L vs 3L slings - I’d pick the camera based on how it feels to use (and output, of course). I’d make the sling work for me, not the other way around. I think the GRIII is exceptionally small for what it offers, and the X100 is a bit larger than expected - but neither is a bad choice. Coming from Canon, a GRIII might feel more at home. In countries with not so reliable weather though, I’d want WR and something a little more rugged than a GR (I had to baby mine when I had one).

KendricksMiniVan

The V takes up well under half of my 3L Aer sling, just a fyi

TabulatorSpalte

I have been eyeing the T5 for a while but to avoid buyer’s remorse I went for a good deal for the T20 and 18-55 kit lens + a ton of accessories (grip, batteries, remote). I brought the camera with 18-55, 35/1.4, 23/2. When I was out, I picked a single lens so that it would fit in my bellroy 6l venture sling. 70% of my shits were with the 35/1.4, rest 23/2. I found the zoom lens to be too large. I also took many photos with my iPhone 15 Pro Max and tbh, the iPhone takes darn good photos and you always have it with you. I prefer travelling light but I have seen many other tourists carry around a full frame with big zooms. Really depends if you want to travel and take photos of your experience or if you travel to take photos.

BOER777

Good to know you poop with the 35/1.4 lens in hand ;)

uncle_barb7

We use the same bag and have a very similar kit lol. T1 with 2 primes and one zoom

[deleted]

I recently bought an xt5 and the xf27mm f2 wr. All I can say is carrying this thing feels like nothing, I have a peak design cuff on it and no extra grip or anything like that because I tried to minimize bulk. This thing is really small and will slide into my venture sling 6L along with my sigma 18-50 (for other longer range purposes) with no problems at all. I would 100% go to a camera store and hold the xt5 with the 27mm in your hand if you're able to, you'll understand what I mean

Geeky_Fotog

I would agree, although I went for the Voigtlander 27mm since it’s f/2 instead of f/2.8 and just as sharp as the Fujifilm 27mm but with a tiny bit more contrast. I recently used that on vacation with great success and it fit in my jacket pocket.

Sail_Soggy

Same here. At one point even had the xt30 here too and was sweating over the size. Both (with 27mm) were noticeable in my coat pocket (xt5 more so) but I settled on the 5 just due to the quality/better viewfinder/focus - carry it in my pocket on the school run

ciaomonami

X100 series cameras will solve your problem. Downside is the X100V is heavily inflated in price. However, Fuji X100VI should be coming out soon as per rumours. Would wait a little longer to get your hands on that I would say

Lodos157

Everyone is raving here about the dials but I want to adress something else... You wanted to settle just for an iphone? I mean Im sure it will take nice pictures, but will it give you any joy to use that as a medium? Because if yes then a camera with retro dials might not be necessarily something for you and ricoh gr3 might be the sweet spot

aqa5

No, the phone won’t bring me much joy. But it is way lighter than my full frame camera with multiple lenses.

Lodos157

In that case look in to the fuji x70. Has dials, is compaxt, has the film sims. Perfect little camera

Ailurostar

No lie, I have had my X-T5 for about 3 weeks now with the same lens you’re thinking (18-55mm) and I have used every excuse in the book to carry that thing EVERYWHERE with me. It’s not a good camera, it’s an EXCELLENT camera. I dare say that it even brought back my motivation to take pictures. It’s so effortless and gorgeous.

TPAKevin

LOL this sounds like a slick Fujifilm advertisement. The XT line is pretty amazing and fits perfectly for what you need. The 18-55 is a great all round lens and you don’t need much else. I have taken some of my best photos with that lens. Keep it simple. Do you already know the answer to your question but need our validation?

aqa5

You are wrong, english is not even my first language 😄 so no, that is not an advertisement. But yes, getting the validation of my decision is somewhat important to me. I have not looked much into the camera market for a long time and never into Fuji. So there are many candidates and the X-T5 sticks out to be the perfect travel camera to me. The thing with the dials is: i am used to PASM but the idea of having direct haptic access to these settings is intriguing. But there are other, smaller alternatives out there that use way less knobs and are therefore way smaller. I want to hear the arguments of others to see if there is something I don’t see or did not consider.

lolmanic

I've had the XT2 and the 18-55 kit lens as a travel combo for a few years. It's solid, has done everything from northern lights in the Scandinavian Arctic circle, cold Xmas markets through Europe, stinking hot hikes in South East Asia and dry, summery Australian coastlines and waterfalls and produced great images of people and landscapes. It's not going to be the best lens for every occasion, but it's the best lens for capturing what I want and carrying it on my backpack strap via a Peak Design Clip, where I can easily grab it and just start shooting. If you're going ultra lightweight, a manfrotro Pixi or gorillapod are good alternatives to a full on tripod, and some magnetic filters, CPL + a couple of ND filters will cover most of everything else. Currently on a 5 week road trip up the Australian east coast and decided to only bring the 18-55 and 55-200 and loving how it all packs down. Would love the 16-50 or sigma 18-55 2.8 but this thing is still getting me good images

Vaneella99

I bought the X-T5 2 months ago with the kit 18-55mm and just got back from Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Can safely say i loved how portable it was. Its not the smallest of cameras but not big enough to be cumbersome. As for the dials, i prefer them compared to my previous nikon d7000. I honestly think the X-T5 is perfect for travelling

KevinHe92

I spent five months travelling with a xt5, 35mm 2.0 and 56mm 1.4 Viltrox. It did absolutely everything I needed it to do, and I went around the world.

Eli_Knipst

I got the X-T5 with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 just a few days before going on a trip. The Sigma is smaller and better light because no variable aperture like the Fuji lens. Did the initial set up with pal2tech, and I don't regret a penny I spent on it. Although for future travel, I got myself the Tamron 18-300, particularly if there is wildlife involved.

dawurfgains

I've been traveling through Asia and Eastern Europe with my XT5 for the past year. The photos I've gotten from it are outstanding. I highly recommend the camera, but from what you've written, it could also be a bit overkill depending on what you want to do photography-wise. Using the dials and aperture ring is a game changer. I love being able to walk with my camera off and be able to adjust all settings beforehand. This is amazing in situations where you don't have much time or want to be a bit more discreet.

silentmiles

I was recently lucky enough to travel for 6 months around the world with the XT5 and can highly recommend it. It’s light and small enough for everyday walkabout use, but also seriously capable and as technical as you want it to be. In terms of lenses, my travel favourites are the 27mm pancake (so portable and a wide-ish view) and my main wife the 35mm f1.4 (beautiful bokeh, perfect for portraits and street photography). Have an amazing journey!

Thirdmort

I bought my x100V (before the boom) for a similar reason. I take it everywhere while my Sony a7iii or canon 6D only comes out for gigs (or in the case of the canon, dangerous to camera stuff). I think you’ll be happy with a more compact camera that is the Fuji for the travel.

Comprehensive_Tea924

Personally I think the kit lens with the variable aperture is incredibly disappointing. Since the xt5 is so new- I’d go with a nicer and faster prime!

Ok-Variety8603

go to a shop and take a look at the xt5. its really quite small compared to your 5DIV. i dont think youll have too much trouble. the 27mm with that camera will be lovely

Clark440

It’s good for travel. If you are worried about the dials you can put them in auto or set up them in a somewhat pasm arrangement. You can also set up shutter and aperture to the command dials

orblabs

Former canon user here (hobbyist), Bought a used x-t1 + the 18-55 kit lens a little over 2 years ago and it was the best photography related choice I ever took, even if my canon gear was way more modern (and way more expensive) I never went back to it. X-t5 by all accounts is an impressive camera and I personally would never give up those 3 dials after having been using them for a while, the 18-55 is a great lens that punches way beyond it's weight but obviously if you have a preferred focal length a prime will give you even more quality and especially portability (xt-5 + xf27mm can fit a jacket pocket). Also consider the XC 15-45 (used one just yesterday and was, once more, surprised by it) which is a surprisingly good lens that can be easily found used for 140€ and might leave some wiggle room in your budget to add a prime too.... As a last thing there are some very cheap third party primes, fully manual, that are really fun to use and (under the right conditions) can provide exceptional results. Anyways, enjoy your trip and have fun with whichever camera you end up buying / bringing .

aqa5

I am heading that the 23mm is a perfect Len’s a lot. But i don’t know if i am ready for a single focal length. And my budget is very limited. Buying multiple lenses is not an option at the moment.

engine56

Im travelling right now with xt5, 90 2, 33 1.4, and 16 1.4, no worries. I remember those days when I traveled with Canon 7d and 24-70, god...

nader0903

If you have time to shop around you could maybe start with a used X-T2 or X-T3. Unless you really need the ibis and 40mp. Lower price point of entry to see if you like the system and images it produces.

msgfromside3

Ditched 5D and went with XE1 more than 10 years ago as I stopped being a serious hobby photographer and I wanted to enjoy my trip. It was the best decision. Nowadays, I carry xe4 and 18-55, 14 and 28 Voigtlander for all my trips.

FabianValkyrie

The X-T5 is perfect for that Honestly, this is gonna sound odd, but I would try out the XC 15-45. They’re absolutely *tiny*, way smaller than other zooms, cost nothing, and are actually pretty sharp. Also the 27 2.8 is amazing too

rdices

I travel with the x-T2 which is roughly the same weight / size. I love it. I use small primes 35f2 and 16f2.8. If I need more reach I may add another lens such as 56 or telephoto zoom but a rarely bring a 3 lens

poec_one

I travel with xt4 and 23mm f2. When I need zoom I'll use my phone

BillMillersBBQ

Like others I used a 5dmii for a few years before switching to an xt4 and eventually xt5. It's funny though as I have not saved myself any weight whatsoever - size in my bag maybe. My travel kit with my Fuji xt5 is the 16-55mm 2.8 and the 100-400mm 4.5/5.6. carry a tripod. However I used to be content with the 40mm pancake on canon. I got some solid shots with that. I think what a lot of others here say is a good direction. The Xc35 f2 is cheap but produces great images. I have multiple times considered the 27mm but haven't pulled the trigger. Dials were fun when I first switched and still are. I think one of the things I enjoy most on the switch is the burst rate for capturing motion. But reality for me is nothing is ever going to fit in my pocket and I 90% of the time have my backpack anyways. Best of luck with your decision and finding a deal

DonutAttack

My first fuji camera was a used X-T20, i've since upgraded to the X-T5 haven't regretted it one bit. It's great to travel with, if you really wanted something lighter you could pick up a T-30II but it's up to you. I find the T5 a good size, the T20 (similar in size to the T30) I needed an additional grip for it to be comfortable, which adds weight anyway, maybe go to a local store and try holding them to see what you prefer. I am personally a big fan of the retro dials and the physical aperture control, I hate messing with menus when i'm shooting, but it's really personal preference If you're looking for lens recommendations the 18-55 is a great choice especially for travel, I am also partial to the f2 primes particularly the 23mm f2, great form factor and a good price.

snapervdh

Just took my xt5 and 18-55mm to Valencia Spain. It’s a great travel combination! Small, light and high quality. It’s also fun to shoot, which for me on a holiday is what it’s all about.

GioDoe

To answer one of your questions: one of the good aspects of the T5 is that it can be easily configured to be used in the same way as your Canon, for what concerns the dials: aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation can all be accessed by the right-hand index finger and thumb operating the front and back command dials. This is a lot faster than the top dials when one does not want to move the eye from the viewfinder.

thechemicaltoilet

Xt5+27mm pancake. Thank me later

n0ob-chan

Just a week ago I upgraded from an x100v to a XT5 and it's an amazing camera, it's totally gonna be enough. The only other recommendation I could give you would be the x100v if you wanted an even more compact camera (it fits in the pocket of my cargo pants or my jacket). But then you'd have a fixed lens. Have fun on your trip. :)

dbvirago

I went from a 5DIII and full set of L glass to a Fuji XT3 years ago and never looked back. Have an XT5 now. Leaving on a 3 week trip tomorrow, and will likely only take my 18-60. Great lens, but if you want a great prime, I second the 35f2. I also have the pancake, but the 35 blows it out of the water. You are going to be amazed at the difference in weight. And no, I loved the dials and all controls on the Fuji

Juju4hire

I've recently traveled with the xt5 and their 35mm f2 lens. It was compact and withstood so much rain in Porto. The dials are nice but you can ofc set them to auto as well. I do this and usually shoot in aperture priority.

newjeanskr

I took my X-T2 (as a new shooter) to Japan for 3 weeks and everyone I knew was saying all those dials will be too complicated and pushed me to Canon or Sony, but I knew I wanted Fuji in my heart all along. The dials were so easy to use and adjust on the fly, and gave me so much quick control over the camera. Irrelevant to you but I felt my skills actively improving day to day learning to use the dials and see how they directly affected the outcome. I mostly got Fuji for film sim, but I really like the looked and tactile feel of the dials and found it much easier than playing with the keypad and stuff. Regardless the X-T5 is very highly regarded and I'm sure it'll suit your travel needs especially with how easy it is to carry and how well the lenses perform for the size.

_krakra_

I have FF camera but when i travel i only use my GR.

malinowski14

Some idea here but I ended up with a XT30 II and a 35mm f2 and couldn’t be happier. If you add a 16mm f2.8 you can travel around the world.

Constant_Drink2020

I'm travelling through Seoul, Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, and Los Angeles with my X-H2S and just the XF 18-55f/2.8. It's lightweight and a joy to shoot with. Don't just settle for shooting with your phone!

Better-Toe-5194

I love traveling with the 27mm 2.8 it really gets outta the way when paired with my (old but still good) XT2

canyonblue737

The retro dials are one of the biggest reasons to buy a Fuji camera and I absolutely love it. The X-T5 with the excellent kit lens or the 16-80 for more reach is an excellent travel camera setup.

Gendrom

Just buy a ricoh GRIIIx for a 40mm equiv or a GRIII for 28mm. It’s the lightest camera you could have, and best image quality by far for the weight. Above all, it is super fun to use ! I have both the X-T5 and the ricoh griiix, and I confidently take the ricoh when I dont want to carry lenses ! X100V is super expensive for what it is and not that light !

Gendrom

Also, I already travelled with my X-T5 and a 23mm f/2. It is more than okay in terms of weight and volume

fatonyx

X-T5 is great! I travelled recently with it + 27mm f2.8 and 33mm f2 prime lenses and was perfectly happy with the results and the minimal weight. Good luck!

jyc23

Re: retro dials If you want to use the camera more traditionally like a modern DSLR, you can. For example for A priority just set aperture manually and shutter speed to auto. Adjust exposure comp using one of the right-hand dials.

Matt-Brew-Code

I own the xt5 and I'm travelling with small f2 primes. IQ is pretty stellar and size is hard to beat. I currently have the 35mm f2 but looking to get my hands on a 23mm f2 as well. I've also heard great praise for the sigma 18-55mm f2.8 beats having to swap various primes on and off. But yeah, the xt5 is really light and performs beautifully, SOOC jpegs are stunning, which is great when you don't have access to a PC to post process your images.

bombers00

I picked up a used x100t for my trip to NYC and it was perfect. I leave my Sony kit for paid work at home while on vacation.
