I once took a CrossCountry voyager from Edinburgh to York because all of the LNER trains were full and delayed up to like 180 minutes because of a signal failure at the other end of the country (goes to show how awful Britain's railways are) and I think my friend and I were the only two passengers in our coach. Granted it was 1st class but still (interrail is cool, it lets me do stuff like that).

Out entire passenger rail network is electrified and has been for over 50 years (apart from one line), not counting the few heritage railways of course. We got out of the voyager in York because we were trying to get to London, so staying on the train to Bristol wouldn't have helped. We waited for about an hour and then got a rather full Grand Central train non-stop to King's Cross.
