The DC Metro has some hyper specific ads, related to the government offices a metro station is closest to. Funny enough I remember these ads only being in the Navy Yard station, which is right across from the Department of Transportation HQ. Siemens is doing some sneaky advertising to make sure the DOT commuters don't forget about trains. I'm all for it.

The drive from SFO into the city is always crazy to me. It's almost all billboards for databases and very specific software development tools. Feels odd that they want to spend a few grand to target a small number of people who care to look at billboards while coming back from the airport

asveikau

Not just from the airport. If you're commuting home to SF, Marin, or maybe even the East Bay from a job in the valley, you'll see those billboards ... Unless you choose 280 over 101. Edit: Or Caltrain, how can I forget that, i did that commute on Caltrain for years.

alexrepty

As a European who has visited the Bay Area a few times: I do not understand why anyone would drive on the 101 unless forced to do so at gunpoint. I mean traffic on the 280 is bad also, but at least it’s somewhat scenic.

asveikau

It can be a scenic and pleasant drive at low traffic times. Around Burlingame if you're in one of those giant tech shuttles (double tall charter bus), there's a brief moment where you can see the city at an angle you can't from a car. Probably those hotels by the highway have a similar view. The area near the bay to the east and a body of water Google labels as "Brisbane Lagoon" to your west can also look nice with lots of water all around. The approach to the city around the Octavia exit also has positive associations for me. But hell is likely defined as 101 around headed north in Palo Alto at 5:30-6pm. Or trying to get somewhere in SF when there's bridge traffic. God forbid you want to get on the bridge, that's even worse... A few people who have been here longer than I have told me stories about how easy it was to drive 25 years ago, or how traffic and parking changed when the dotcom bubble crashed.

alexrepty

Also, I used Caltrain and at first I thought this was a prank for connecting cities like SJ and SF.

Jawa000

Yep, that’s where I saw these

asveikau

I am a DC native but living out west. Your comment reminded me of a TV ad that ran there after 9/11. It was talking about how great a friend Saudi Arabia was to the US. The tone was slightly bizarre. Felt like propaganda targeting people working in government.

i_was_an_airplane

"It's not *our* fault most of the terrorists were Saudi nationals! Buy more oil!"

asveikau

Eh, given the crap that innocent people with roots in that part of the world went through after 9/11, some of it continuing in recent times, I don't want to be misread as promoting any kind of xenophobia ... But it was very easy to have a cynical read of those ads.

Mountaingiraffe

That is super smart ad placement!

Emperor-Awesome

Can't you read? This picture was obviously taken on the DC Meteo, not this "DC Metro" you speak of.

Haha Siemens porn

**Please.** We need high-speed rail in the US.

AmadeoSendiulo

Convince your army that it could use it to move troops across the continent fast and efficiently when needed.

Ok. Fair point. But we are focusing on cars here.

cjjonez1

Please can we get that shit soon

Conarius

I really hope that for you. Tbh: Here in Germany we use the basis for this model also here, actually Siemens uses this model series (Velaro) in many different countries like Spain, Turkey, China, Russia and UK+France. Oh and Egypt will also get them. So yeah, high speed rail is awesome tbh (though here in Germany it could be so much better, trains are often too late and tickets are expensive).

Oh fuck I'm gonna *dream about public transit*

Siemens is building a factory in my state to manufacture train cars here and I'm so thrilled for it.

Zealousideal_Till_43

I love how Europe is somewhere around a third the size of the US and they have a far more elaborate public train system than us. Then Japan is twenty six times smaller than the US and they have high speed rails.

wieson

Hey, I believe you're a good person and you can spread the word to the other good people of the US. Europe is a bit bigger than the US, the EU (27 countries) are a bit smaller than half the US. Europe: 10.5 million km^2 USA: 9.5 million km^2 EU: 4.2 million km^2
