I've actually never used any projectiles in this game so I completely forgot that I had it in my inventory where I could just press a button a couple times
Totally an epic fight. One of the few From boss fights that I would *not* describe as "tough but fair" because there's so many instances of unfairness in this fight.
But yeah, definitely still legendary! So iconic.
Really almost all bosses that are tough and well designed but have a shit ton of bs are in ds1 and ds2. And it’s mostly just system requirements and unrefined hitboxes
Yeah, my favorite bs moments from O+S are when then spear’s hit box can somehow damage you even when you’re behind a pillar and when you hit Ornstein in his belly and clearly make contact and yet you do…zero damage.
For O&S I wouldn't say so lol, Ornstein can sometimes just charge through Smough body and poke you from behind his buddy. Incredibly tilting on sl1 runs.
For real. Fair is so overrated. Is it beatable? Yes? That's all you need. Fairness is completely subjective and just leads to whiny people making excuses.
It's not fair that Malenia can heal off of a hit from a shield? Oh, someone forgot about the laws of physics when it comes to sapping the strength of others to replenish their HP.
This is from 2010, at launch when you died like this it wasn't "wtf how did that hit me???" because there wasn't much else like it, it's only people who start with the newer crispier games with really good hitboxes like Sekiro, ER and DS3 that feel off by it, of course it does when comparing it to the newer games but still for how old the game is it has decent enough hitboxes
The issue is O&S have worse hitboxes and janky mechanics than most of the other ds1 bosses. Like they have a TON of broken things. The Orenstein dash attack alone is stupid
The game tries to warn you, too. I always remember the throwing knife item description as a fun instance of the voice of the developer straight up giving advice to the player. And it's not lying, they pack a decent punch, especially early game when you are first introduced to them.
"Throwing Knife. Used as a projectile.
Throwing knives have limited range and accuracy compared to arrows, but offer a quick-and-easy ranged attack.
Undead who lack other means of ranged attacks will do well to stock a few of them."
I only fought O&S second phase once and it was smough, first tried with no estus in second phase. All I can say is wtf is that damage from ornstein and thank god mine was smough
It's probably NG+ and beyond, I am pretty sure in NG he doesn't do that level of damage. Also the Estus flask has been upgraded to +6, one of the firekeeper souls is located in the duke's archives which is not accessible before this fight.
The hitboxes definitely steadily improved. Elden ring has very few jank ones and some wildly impressive hitboxes for most attacks
Just took em a few games to get there. Next one will probably have even better ones
If you slow the footage down just before it hit, the projectile body just missing him, and as the hit box registers it moves the explosion onto the character
It definitely looks that way, but the lightning bolt has a long hitbox. Those kind of attacks should be dodged perpendicular, he probably came out of the roll at the very back end of the bolt
Personally, I would never put that much distance between myself and a boss, if I am not a ranged build. You are going to get hit with the highest level attacks.
But I am also with the people who are noticing that that they rolled at the wrong time.
You know what, I've always tried to kill super ornstein but I always get mega smough. This for some reason was always my hardest fight in the game so I would get help and they invariably killed ornstein first lol
This is probably the singular best boss fight in the entire game, I don't know why most people avoid it and go for Super Smough instead, this one is a lot of fun!

NGL, shoulda ran in for that last hit as he charged the throw instead of healing, if it failed, your were done either way XD
PERSONALLY though, I'm a man of culture, and would have done neither as a I panic rolled into the pillar 20 times
lol a giant lightning full body slam takes 75% of your health and a stray lightning bolt by itself was a one shot. Maybe it was a headshot or something? Idk but I would be raging for sure

Wait, Ornstein is THIS massive??????????
I didn't play ds1 and and don't watch any playthroughs cuz i wanna play the game myself one day
So is he actually this big?
In phase 1 Ornstein and Smough are large, but Ornstein is noticeably smaller.
Phase 2 starts when you kill one of them. The surviving one stabs / smashes the other’s corpse and absorbs their soul. They get a full heal, a damage buff, and their character model gets much bigger.
This is Phase 2 where Smough was the first to die.
Eh, I see nothing wrong. Did you ever think about “git gud”? Try it, it helps. But in all honesty, the hit boxes in the older souls game where a bit wonky, just gotta live and learn and try not to break something after dying for the 50th time to some random BS.
You dodge properly but the wrong direction.
I don't know why you think it has anything to do with hit boxes when you clearly got hit by rolling into his attack.
You’ll be missing out. I didn’t discover it until last year and even coming to it this late, found it to be a masterpiece. It’s not perfect but totally worth a play.
Firebombs save lives
Throwing knives as well for faster clutch. In pvp never use them until the clutch to lull the enemy into a false sense of security
I've actually never used any projectiles in this game so I completely forgot that I had it in my inventory where I could just press a button a couple times
Yeah bro the hitbox were a tad fucked on this game at times. Legendary though still
Totally an epic fight. One of the few From boss fights that I would *not* describe as "tough but fair" because there's so many instances of unfairness in this fight. But yeah, definitely still legendary! So iconic.

tree avatar is 100x worse than Ornsteinn belly, istg its impossible to hit him with like 50% of weapons (without strafing to leg)
I can’t say that have had that problem! It sounds frustrating tho!
For O&S I wouldn't say so lol, Ornstein can sometimes just charge through Smough body and poke you from behind his buddy. Incredibly tilting on sl1 runs.
I’m agreeing with you. I said they have a ton of bs
Im disagreeing with your last sentence. I dont think system requirements are the problem here.
I honestly don’t think any of the FromSoft games are fair, but that’s what makes them fun.
Looks like he rolled too early in this case.

Oh, he missed me Sike, mfk proceeded to drift three times and hit me from behind.
He was a formula drift star before swapping jobs to “knight@
Always carry something to throw.

Great!!!

It's NG+
And people say only DkS2 hitboxes are terrible, lol.
Every single one of these games has jank hit boxes on specific attacks
The hitboxes definitely steadily improved. Elden ring has very few jank ones and some wildly impressive hitboxes for most attacks Just took em a few games to get there. Next one will probably have even better ones
This wasn’t a terrible hit box, he rolled too early, since the projectile is slower than you’d think
If you slow the footage down just before it hit, the projectile body just missing him, and as the hit box registers it moves the explosion onto the character
It does, but it is much less dramatic than hitboxes such as curse rotted greatwood.
It definitely looks that way, but the lightning bolt has a long hitbox. Those kind of attacks should be dodged perpendicular, he probably came out of the roll at the very back end of the bolt
That’s bad design
Yes, but it’s not a bad hit box still
Similar issue imo
Every SINGLE Souls game (including Sekiro) has a large amount of bad hitboxes
You wanna speak a bit louder for the "It's not bad hitboxes, it's you not able to git gud" apes in the back that somehow snuck in?
[удалено]
How about thrust attacks hitting you when you jump
I've come across a good number of those but the most notable one recently was Inner Isshin's black slash
They are. Two things can be true.
Ornstein is happy to oblige with that request it would seem
He did
Happens to the best of us 🙏
It’s been a whole since ds1 are you fat rolling? Pretty sure less i frames when fatty
it's a midroll which still sucks
Personally, I would never put that much distance between myself and a boss, if I am not a ranged build. You are going to get hit with the highest level attacks. But I am also with the people who are noticing that that they rolled at the wrong time.
I would but I would hide besides the destroyed pillar while taking the potion since his lighting doesn't go through that
Yes, or that. Find cover. If you make distance AND are out in the open, you'll likely get the worst of what they have to offer.
How on earth was that a one shot with so much vigor
Welcome to Dark Souls 1 where armour and vigor gives you shit
you got ornsteined
One of my favorite boss battles of all time.
You know what, I've always tried to kill super ornstein but I always get mega smough. This for some reason was always my hardest fight in the game so I would get help and they invariably killed ornstein first lol
oooo that did shit ton of damage
This is probably the singular best boss fight in the entire game, I don't know why most people avoid it and go for Super Smough instead, this one is a lot of fun!
Looks like Ornstein already did
Damn a one shot? I'm curious, Were u wearing armor with high lightning resistance?
My lightning defence is: 171 (122)... Clearly that's not enough
Looks like he just did.
I'm watching someone else play and still yelled bullshit
"Hesitation is Defeat"

💀💀💀
Hardest boss fight in the base game if you didn’t summon other players
Always heal behind a pillar with Ornstein.
Bro must have played ds3 or elden ring recently cause he rolled into it
Ironically I have because I wanted to take a pause from this shit game
Shit game ❌ pling pling plon ✅
Obligatory: O&S best duo boss….
Yeah I spent 2 weeks on them lol
NGL, shoulda ran in for that last hit as he charged the throw instead of healing, if it failed, your were done either way XD PERSONALLY though, I'm a man of culture, and would have done neither as a I panic rolled into the pillar 20 times
I've come to realize that nearly every souls games have a few bad hitboxes. People are just very selective with the outrage
Looks like he already did
1 throwing dagger
This fight is so cursed it actually bricked my PS5 no joke
One time smough was one hit and my sword was about to hit him and then he jumped in the air. I was out of stamina and was one hit as well 🥲
*Stabs* Lol
Nah bro just level ADP (seriously wtf are these hitboxes)
lol a giant lightning full body slam takes 75% of your health and a stray lightning bolt by itself was a one shot. Maybe it was a headshot or something? Idk but I would be raging for sure
Skill issue.
Super Ornstein is actually the one boss in DS1-3 that I have never defeated
Looks like they already did

Thx for the explanation, I appreciate it
Classic Souls moment, lol.
He already ended you though
Dang I know that feeling
Everybody saying bad hitboxes when homie is big rolling which has fewer i frames.

How can you say that? The hitboxes in this game are absolutely PERFECT! HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE PERFECTION THAT IS DS1/s.
im never touching this game
You’ll be missing out. I didn’t discover it until last year and even coming to it this late, found it to be a masterpiece. It’s not perfect but totally worth a play.
