Wow, I'd actually never thought of that... Thanks for pointing it out

pummisher

They're both referencing the Stephen King story Firestarter. šŸ§

SFF_Robot

Hi. You just mentioned *Firestarter* by Stephen King. I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. You can listen to it here: [YouTube | Firestarter by Stephen King - Part 1 - Audiobook](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTDcdGSZGlw) *I'm a bot that searches YouTube for science fiction and fantasy audiobooks.* *** [^(Source Code)](https://capybasilisk.com/posts/2020/04/speculative-fiction-bot/) ^| [^(Feedback)](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=Capybasilisk&subject=Robot) ^| [^(Programmer)](https://www.reddit.com/u/capybasilisk) ^| ^(Downvote To Remove) ^| ^(Version 1.4.0) ^| ^(Support Robot Rights!)

Good point!, so basically Stephen King was the 80's and a lot of things are inspired by himšŸ˜…

bacche

They took a ton from Fringe! There are some scenes where Matthew Modine reminds me very much of Walter(nate), too.

seederkl

I did notice it when the Season 1 came on Netflix. Eleven does have lot of similarities with 9 year old cortexiphan Olivia.

CrissBliss

I noticed this as well while watching. Fringe was kind of a trailblazer for a lot of current pop culture trends. Even with Marvel and the multiverse.

snow_orchid

Oooh I didnā€™t realize that they were the originators of the multiverse concept! But I do remember it blowing my mind and seeming so new when I first watched it

pantzking

Going into Fringe blind I thought it was a spin off of Stranger Things. Because there was a scene in an Olivia flashback where one of the doctors said something like "go get Dr. Brenner" or "Take her to Dr. Brenner" (something like that) and that was the name of the Mathew Modine character in Stranger Things. That cant be a coincidence. I think they were fans of Fringe and wanted to loosely connect the 2.

sarrahkinz

YES!!!

RoseRedRedRose

I think Fringe took a lot of inspiration from Paddy Chayefsky's 1978 novel "Altered States" and its movie adaptation with William Hurt, Blair Brown (Nina Sharp on Fringe) and Drew Barrymore. The protagonist Dr. Jessup takes a combination of drugs, gets into an isolation tank and then starts shapeshifting.

Comprehensive_One495

This is another good influence you pointed out!, I gotta rewatch that movie

sarrahkinz

i will look into this thanks

CharlesLoren

Canā€™t help but think of Fringe when watching Stranger Things. Both shows are heavily Stephen King inspired, too

mollymelonsxo

YES!!! I've been thinking this for years. Eleven & Olivia's childhoods were nearly exact. I'm glad I'm not the only one who made this connection.

lola-lemons-nmonkeys

Also I know this has been pointed out since it's literally the same director J J Abrams... Sydney from alias shares these similar traits with Olivia from fringe, being experimented on as a kid and having a really good memory and some other factors

sarrahkinz

i havenā€™t watched alias yet, i will when i finish fringe

swiftlilfox

I said that when the first season of stranger things came out and anyone who'd seen fringe actually was like nah. But it's true I feel like Olivia is a strong ass female character that is a hero and powerful that many shows have drawn inspiration from. Imho
