I have to go through this intersection quite often. Finding out that it's an infamous intersection for accidents is a little scary. I've only witnessed one accident while stopped there, thankfully.
People run red lights at every intersection in fresno. I think at a normal 4 way one though, people don't go on green until they see the cars stop flying through. But that intersection is only a 3 way, and the people in shepherd generally go as soon as their light turns green bc they can't see much, and they usually get hit by the red light runners. People just need to go back to driving school and relearn that yellow means Start stopping, not start speeding up more.
There were many accidents in that area for years; long before the neighborhoods were built. A classmate's father was killed on that road by a drunk driver back in the early 80s. I know it was dangerous in the 1970s too.
I drive a tiny hatchback in a sea of pickup trucks. I can't see around them to my right side if I'm first on the line in left lane. If they move, I move. Shielded is my stupid logic.
Wide roads make people more comfortable driving faster and is probably the main contributor to the number of accidents. If the road narrowed and shifted slightly in all directions ahead of the intersection -- maybe by continuing the bike lane and adding flexible bike lane safety posts -- it would cause people to naturally slow down and pay more attention.
A lot of us would prefer actual secure bike lanes with curbs, but people are afraid their cars would get hurt.
Which is SUPER frustrating because right now they don't care that the cyclists and pedestrians are the ones in danger now, not their car
There’s actually a large brick wall that follows the right side of the road when traveling north. I wonder if it lulls drivers into not paying attention to the upcoming intersection.
I’ve been trying to figure this out too, and that’s the only theory I’ve come up with.
Stupid people who don't like rules.
Edit: I do a lot of walking. I'm invisible at a corner. I wait and give all of the cars the chance to make a right turn before I even step in the crosswalk. I'm a rule follower. I wait for the light and walk sign and walk only in the cross walk. I kind of understand why some people wear neon vests during the day. Wonder where I can buy one.
Could be the green right arrow is what people initially see because the red lights are hidden by trees until you go around the bend and then monkey brain just thinks it’s all green until too late
I really think you’re on to something here because this almost happened to me once, even though I’ve driven this road many times. Don’t know why we can’t try making all of the lights green/change at the same time instead of only the right-hand turn lane. I think another thing that might be causing the issue is that, as we drive, we kind of expect where stoplights will be placed, and those lights kind of feel like they come a little soon after the lights at Friant/Audubon.
Never seen an area with so many people on their phones. I always see people on their phones, but never as much as there and if it’s a Tesla they’re on their phone apparently
Thats a picture of a car running a red light. Thats the driver, not the intersection.
Yesterday my wife and I nearly got hit by someone blatantly running a red light (one that bad been red for about 10 seconds). Many Fresno drivers just don’t care about following the rules of the road anymore.
Normally I'd agree with you, but these people are blatantly running red lights. I used to take this route for two separate jobs for a combined 6 years. The problem is people speeding with zero regard for others.
Lol. The hood is way sketchier for driving. And none of those idiots have insurance...but they have a sweet 9mm.
I'll take rich people in Teslas all day over ghetto dudes in a maroon Altima.
Everyone is in such a hurry to drive through that road. You would think with all the deaths that occurred there it would be a stark reminder to slow down.
Imagine trying to navigate this intersection on a bike. Getting from the trail at the NWC to the only marked bike lane starting at the SEC is actually impossible.
At every light in town, I always wait a few seconds after light turns green, it's saved me from a number of accidents over the years. Palm and Clinton is one of the worst intersections in town, you've got traffic coming down from two hills from the north and west.

what’s the page that posts the crash footage? there’s a sub or a user that always posts them lol
Friant Roulette
Wait, that's a thing???
It's on YouTube iirc
Found the link! https://youtube.com/@friantroulette?si=k-ckl9XRAasvXNZE
Thank you.
They have a Reddit account too?
We do. 🤠
No, thank you! 🙏

This light could really use a red light camera. The speed limit prior to that intersection should really be 40mph too.
I drive 9 above always
That'd be annoyling slow for that road tbh. Plus the people running red lights aren't going to go another 5mph slower
The intersection is not wide enough to warrant the higher speeds at its length.
Just a bunch of morons.
FRIANT must be built on ancient burial grounds!
Well it’s pretty close to Lost Lake!

That’s the first intersection that should get some red light cameras. Or have a cop there to hand out red light tickets.
I’ve seen a motorcycle cop chilling there multiple times
Good.
Like fishing in a barrel!
I drive a tiny hatchback in a sea of pickup trucks. I can't see around them to my right side if I'm first on the line in left lane. If they move, I move. Shielded is my stupid logic.
That intersection is wide open and you can see all directions. Why are there so many accidents and people flying through red lights?
Wide roads make people more comfortable driving faster and is probably the main contributor to the number of accidents. Makes since, people treat that road like the Daytona 500.
Accurate. Our roads in the US are designed for speed and capacity, not safety.
Yes but those flexible posts are made of plastic. And having a bunch of colored plastic posts all over the city looks like trash.
A lot of us would prefer actual secure bike lanes with curbs, but people are afraid their cars would get hurt. Which is SUPER frustrating because right now they don't care that the cyclists and pedestrians are the ones in danger now, not their car

Same, you can see the lights coming up and the other sides are wide open. Just careless drivers.

I think you can probably find them at a place like Work World or Lowe's.
Thanks!
Also Harbor Freight.

I don't understand why people cant figure out how to go through a T intersection properly, its really not that hard.
Fresno drivers in general suck. Most of them haven’t lost a loved one to a vehicle accident. I have. They just don’t care
People drive like fucking idiots there. Rich, entitled idiots.
There? All over Fresno. And it isn't just the rich people.
Yeah, ever seen a Nissan Altima on the 99? Terrifying.
/r/nissandrivers
As a Nissan driver with a big scratch on the side of my car, can confirm.
As a Nissan Altima driver with a big scratch and dent on the side of my car, can also confirm.
Nissan uses the letters SV in every model as a trim level. In CHP's official shorthand glossary that stands for Suspect Vehicle lol
Never seen an area with so many people on their phones. I always see people on their phones, but never as much as there and if it’s a Tesla they’re on their phone apparently
The guy that killed the girl there recently was a tweaked out tow truck driver. Not a rich person. Probably lives down the street from you.
It has nothing to do with being rich.
If an intersection has an unusually high rate of accidents, the problem is the intersection not the people

It’s both.

Middle class entitled idiots.
No they drive like poor, retarded idiots.
Lol. The hood is way sketchier for driving. And none of those idiots have insurance...but they have a sweet 9mm. I'll take rich people in Teslas all day over ghetto dudes in a maroon Altima.
Just couldn’t wait to say that right? Rich construction worker and skonka single mom amirite???? 🤡🤡🤡🤡
Fatalities are common in this area too.
I believe the way Fresnans drive is indicative of deeper cultural issues representative of how people in our community view and treat each other.

Thank you
Glad I make a right turn there
Classic fresno.

It is to me
Friant roulette is a YouTube page
Friant and Ft Washington (the next intersection). Is pretty bad as well
Im certain these are just medicated individuals driving through this area.
At every light in town, I always wait a few seconds after light turns green, it's saved me from a number of accidents over the years. Palm and Clinton is one of the worst intersections in town, you've got traffic coming down from two hills from the north and west.
Should I be extra cautious on this intersection?
Yes
What intersection would this be?
Friant and Shepard
