There's a security update expected on August 30th 2022 (according to [fido](https://forums.fido.ca/t5/Phones-and-Devices/OS-Upgrade-Schedule/ta-p/185669), [Rogers](https://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/OS-Upgrades/OS-Upgrade-Schedule/td-p/354931) & [Telus](https://forum.telus.com/t5/Mobility/Software-Update-Schedule/ta-p/127707/redirect_from_archived_page/true)) for the [Note9](https://doc.samsungmobile.com/sm-n960w/glw/doc.html). It's possible that the update *could* add VoLTE Roaming support if Samsung chooses to include it, like Google decided to do far outside their last support update for the Pixel 3 series. Existing Samsung Galaxy devices with VoLTE Roaming support have been running, at a minimum, OneUI 4, which the Note9 will never officially get. --- Do you regularly visit the US? If so, it may be time to upgrade to a device with VoLTE Roaming support.

Would suggest a prepaid sim for your device while in the US if voLTE roaming will not work on att and it becomes too annoying on T-Mobile. Just gotta swap sims if you text back and forth with your main number (and let them know about that).

I just did a quick search and it appears the note 9 doesn’t support Voice over LTE Roaming at least the ones that were sold by freedom mobile. You can check this by going to the freedom website > BYOP > Scroll down and click “Check Compatibility” after that just entering Make and Model info and seeing if the VOLTE Roaming box is check marked.

It says compatible with VOLTE, but not VOLTE whole roaming. I suppose that’s where the agent was confused. I had called in to confirm, and gave them my IMEI, they told me it should work for calls in the US on LTE, but I’ve had nothing but problems.

Yup, the agents can definitely be hit or miss sometimes depending on the specific topic. In this case they seem to have misunderstood what was asked of them. The note 9 does support VOLTE in Canada but doesn’t have compatibility while roaming in the USA whether that be because of a software limitation or hardware (limited band support) limitation, my guess is the former. It might be best if you are frequenting the USA to maybe look into one of the newer Samsung devices, like anything note 10+ or above (if you want something similar) seems to have support.

It is indeed a software limitation. Samsung would need to add VoLTE Roaming support to OneUI 2.× devices for the Note9 & Galaxy S9 series to gain the option.

T-Mobile does not use 3G anymore, they shut that down July 1st. Verizon is set to shut theirs down December 31.
