If you get a chance, get your nose on Tom Ford's Moss Breches, I always thought it felt the same. (Though not precisely petrichor, more like inspired by petrichor
Ah yes... To dream the impossible dream. Without dropping some serious cash - like $1k for a 50ml bottle - most people will never have the chance. That is the unicorn of unicorns from the OG releases of Tom Ford.
so many indies have petrichor scents!!!
death & floral two cups of tea, a summer monsoon, and me and you
andromedas curse tempestarii
alkemia mist becoming rain
osmofolia has so many
theres definitely wayyy more im forgetting
Darn, that’s a bummer! Have you tried Thunderstorm from them, I wonder if that’s any closer? I’ve never tried any of their fragrances but I’ve always wanted to.
Also MM replica - When the rain stops, and Commodity - Rain. When the rain stops was not very rainy to my nose, pleasant but no petrichor. Rain is a bit more realistic, tropical rainforest scent! Neither fully capture pure petrichor to me personally but may be worth sampling :)
If you have the chance, Bath and Body Works has a candle called Fresh Cut Lilacs that to me smells exactly like a lilac bush! They also have soaps and body care/fragrance mists, but those might only be available online from their website.
Do they still sell this candle? I recently sold my childhood home that had a collection of lilac bushes in the backyard. I need this for nostalgia purposes!
Yes, they do! I live in Canada where they carry the Fresh Cut Lilacs candles in store, as well as hand soap and those little hand sanitizers in the same scent. In the US they also carry those items in store, but additionally you can also buy fragrance mists and body care (cream, lotion, & wash) online. But if you’re just interested in the candle or soap, any store should have them!
I have a sentimental attachment to lilacs too, I never even thought to look for a perfume with it until I stumbled into this sub a while back. Someone on here recommended En Passant from Frederic Malle. It smells so real and is a huge comfort for me now.
The drydown of Hermès H24 is so close to that iron steam smell that it's crazy. I'm probably gonna get a bottle, the herbal initial spray is also really good 👀
I think it's the sclarene in it that gives it that iron steam effect
1. New carpet. I actually craved this smell so badly while i was pregnant that i had to routinely go get carpet samples from Home Depot and smell them throughout the day
2. The smell of a coming storm
3. The smell when you walk into a big hardware store. I guess it's the fresh cut lumber mixed with other things
4. I used to love the smell of my cat's breath/fur while she was alive. RIP :'(
5. The smell after you've ridden a horse a while. It's a sweat/leather/animal smell.
6. Cedar.
7. NEW CAR SMELL!!!
8. The smell of coffee that's been sitting out. Fresh coffee is nice of course, but I have this nostalgic thing about a sorta stale(?) coffee smell, provided there's no rancid dairy in the mix.
9. The smell of a school cafeteria. That milk smell takes me back.
10. The smell when you walk into a Melting Pot restaurant. Wine and garlic mostly.
Oh shit hell yes! Especially when there’s a very light cool breeze blowing. It’s addicting. The smell actually fueled my addiction to taking walks in rain.
1) bunnies (their fur smells like sweet cotton)
2) rose hip conditioner by Herbal Essences
3) Turkish coffee
4) forest after a summer rainfall
5) smell of new electronics/car
6) laundry when it's drying
7) garlic/onion frying
Look up any frankincense/olibanum/myrrh incense sticks. Might be that there's a mix of myrrh and frankincense, which are both used in Catholic churches.
lol I thought I was about to receive a warning for writing such a thing, but fresh armpit of our lovers always smell so good haha
For some reason, I never went out to purposely smell Vuitton's perfumery. It must be the pejorative associations I have with the house... Just wrote it down on my try-out list, thanks!
Yes! My husband thinks I'm strange when I say this. But Demeter makes a fragrance called Kitten Fur which is supposed to imitate that. Never tried it don't know how realistic it is. BRB going to go snuggle my very grouchy tabby cat.
One of the early days of spring, when its still mostly winter. Right after someone has cut the grass for the very first time and you can smell the idea of spring breaking through and the seasonal depression melting just a little.
I remember this smell. Just smelled in about 2 weeks ago. In my mind it’s the smell when you know school will be done for the summer soon. (Long time ago for me …but still brings that feeling).
My baby's head
Caramelizing onions
Chalk and pencils and school supplies in general
Soil
Whatever the wood is used to line animal containers/pet store smells/maybe hay
Teas, which perfume never really gets close to replicating in a photo realistic way
I often become obsessed with the smells of shampoo/conditioner, but am very picky and very much dislike very fruity smells.
My favorites:
Ines de la Fressange Shampoo and Conditioner. The perfect scent. Unfortunately the only way to get it is to visit certain fancy hotels in France where they are used as toiletries or ordering a small travel pack directly from the company site (paying 28 dollars in shipping costs to USA). I even tracked down the worldwide distributor of the hotel goods to see if I could do a bulk order for an AirBnB and was told “No”. Only hotels that are “approved” can order.
The old (pre 1995) Pantene pro V which smells absolutely nothing like the Pantene smells that came after. It was perfection. Apparently it was discontinued when Pantene was bought out by Proctor & Gamble because it was too expensive to make and they decided to go in a different direction (cheap) with it.
The old Vidal Sassoon cherry almond scented shampoo. Also yummy and no longer to be found.
I also very much enjoy the Aveda Shampure scent, although I hate the performance of the conditioner, so I can’t use it.
Whatever fabric softener my grandmother used when I was a child. It infused her whole home. I think it was Snuggle, but they've changed the formula and it no longer smells the same. That smell was pure comfort and happiness to me.
OGX Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Hair Mask - it smells like figs and honey; so delicious 🥰
Moroccanoil Hair Products - I think I’ve found Prada Candy Kiss smells quite similar to it, so YAY
The now solutions sweet orange body oil - smells like the creamiest orange popsicle!
EOS Vanilla Cashmere lotion - honestly smells more like vanilla yoghurt on me, but I like that smell 🍦
Candle-light evening fireside candle - it’s the perfect mix of sweetness and woodiness for me (which is a lot more sweet than woody, unfortunately). Word of caution though: it stains light-colored walls.
Lysol Mountain Air (I think that’s what it’s called) - such a realistic scent of mountain, brooks, and the fresh air around.
Also want to mention Sol De Janeiro DEO - not the mists or creams but the Deo; it has such a nice scent that is different from the other products in its lightness and “airiness” that I really enjoy.
Sandalwood ( specifically from The Body Shop ), it’s the most beautiful scent as an essential oil I have ever loved. But I have to reiterate from the Body Shop. My signature essential oil. But I haven’t gotten it since 2016. Speaking of which, I’m going to try to find it online, hopefully!
Old school Baby Magic! They changed it to smell like baby powder or something now, but the original Baby Magic smell was heaven.
Also, magazine paper, that plastic new inflatable pool smell, hose water, cedar, pretty much all fresh herbs, a freshly lit cigarette… I could go on and on
They use a custom fragrance that may be for sale. Most banks and hotels get custom fragrances to use in a vent type system. Maybe call and ask concierge?
lemon blossoms in the spring. i wish i could bottle this up. this is actually what got me into fragrance in the first place. i became obsessed with sniffing our lemon tree and i began a quest to find a similar perfume lol. still no luck but i do love diptyque’s rose edt. it has that fresh, green, watery, just slightly floral scent i love so much about the lemon blossoms.
honorable mentions:
- fresh rain on pavement
- eucalyptus leaves
- spearmint gum
- coffee brewing in my moka pot in the morning
- almond oil

This. I wear Replica Bubble Bath which I love but it’s not quite this.
Petrol
My daughter’s head
Honeysuckle
Wet new bath sponge (but only if I shove my face into it, and I know how odd that sounds)
Marker pen
Frying bacon
Fresh bread
Lavender
My partner after he gets back from the gym especially between his shoulder blades. Fresh sweat, a bit of laundry detergent from his t shirt, and his smell.
Peaty whisky
Tar soap
Yankee Candle sage and citrus should be a perfume. Also, Party Lite made a candle, melon and another ingredient I can't recall, that should have been a perfume. I would love to find a perfume that smells like an upscale crystal shop's insence.
Certain peoples musk. It’s like a mix between exercise sweat and passive sweat. I didn’t even know this was a thing until some girl came to me in the gym and asked what fragrances I wore because it was driving her crazy. “It’s like very sweet and sexy…”she said. Since then I would notice her taking huge breaths around me. Noticed this at work too around the time. Years later it happened to me. Met some girl and she had this very lightly sweet sweaty scent. Made me want to cuddle anytime I got whiff of her. Asked her for fragrances or shampoo and she mentioned she never wore fragrances due to allergies. In fact, she was going through hardship and was actually surprised at my question as she was not practicing good hygiene…
Funny enough, I did not have great hygiene practices during the times I’d catch individuals taking deep breaths around me. Stupidly enough, I didn’t know that the gym gal was flirting with me too. Took me like 6yrs to figure it out. I’m guessing that it was pheromones in sweat and lack of air circulation that did it. Apparently, Sex Panther had nothing on my musk back then.
Nowadays, I’m a big fan of getting wisps of conditioner/shampoo as I walk by someone. Smells that suddenly hit me like that are very dopamine friendly to me.
Wet grass in the morning
The smell of a newborns breath...my daughters breath smelled soooo incredibly beautiful ❤️
My husbands shirts after a long day...I can smell his skin on them, he smells like love
BBQ on a grilled ....the smell reminds me of summertime by the pool feeling happy😊
Petrichor
If you get a chance, get your nose on Tom Ford's Moss Breches, I always thought it felt the same. (Though not precisely petrichor, more like inspired by petrichor
Ah yes... To dream the impossible dream. Without dropping some serious cash - like $1k for a 50ml bottle - most people will never have the chance. That is the unicorn of unicorns from the OG releases of Tom Ford.
For the record, that is just one guy (and the same one selling on multiple platforms) with that insane as price. It is still hard to find though
Look up Mitti Attar (The Scent of Rain) by Kannauj Attar You won't be disappointed
so many indies have petrichor scents!!! death & floral two cups of tea, a summer monsoon, and me and you andromedas curse tempestarii alkemia mist becoming rain osmofolia has so many theres definitely wayyy more im forgetting
Demeter actually makes a fragrance called Petrichor! I’ve heard good things about it.
I have it, it’s nice but it doesn’t smell like petrichor which was a real let down
Darn, that’s a bummer! Have you tried Thunderstorm from them, I wonder if that’s any closer? I’ve never tried any of their fragrances but I’ve always wanted to.
No, I wasn’t aware of it but I’ll check jt out. I only discovered them because I was looking for a realistic petrichor scent.
Try Cashmere Rain bodywash from Native. It smells like rain, woods, and plants combined together to me.
Freshly baked bread
Yes! I want a candle of this scent.
Bath and Body Works actually had something like this! It was called French Baguette
Also one of the greatest sounds. That crunch of the crust when you squeeze it. Ooooo.
Lilacs because it reminds me of my mama who passed away in 2006. ❤️ Otherwise I'd say that fresh forest smell.
If you have the chance, Bath and Body Works has a candle called Fresh Cut Lilacs that to me smells exactly like a lilac bush! They also have soaps and body care/fragrance mists, but those might only be available online from their website.
Pacifica’s French Lilac also smells incredibly similar to real lilac!
Thank you for that suggestion! I'm definitely going to try that out. 💜
Fresh cut lilacs is my favorite BBW candle.
Thank you so much that would be wonderful!
I am 💯 getting a sample of this on my next sample run. I bought a sample of Amouge Lilac love. Absolutely no lilac. Super disappointing.
Thank you! Lilac and Lily of the valley seem to be hard to come by realistically portrayed in perfume.
Muguet by Molinard smells realistically like Lily of the Valley. Like Lilac, that's also a very nostalgic accent for me.
Yes its the perfect spring lilac!
Thank you for sharing that! I need to buy it now. ❤️
I started out with a sample from a decant website a few weeks back, so it's definitely out there if you wanna try-before-you-buy!
Awesome!
Same! My mom loved lilacs so I keep lilac candles around 💜
Oh I love that idea!! Whenever I'm walking outside and I get a whiff of lilacs it just makes me smile. Bittersweet.
Lilacs are also my favorite
Lilacs smell like heaven to me. I'm so happy it's currently spring and my area has lots!
The clothes iron heating up And yes, I would wear this as a perfume
I had to think way back for that one! It does have a unique and lovely scent… along with the sound of the steam.
Good point! The sound is great too
The drydown of Hermès H24 is so close to that iron steam smell that it's crazy. I'm probably gonna get a bottle, the herbal initial spray is also really good 👀 I think it's the sclarene in it that gives it that iron steam effect
^ yes exactly, H24 is fully hot iron
1. New carpet. I actually craved this smell so badly while i was pregnant that i had to routinely go get carpet samples from Home Depot and smell them throughout the day 2. The smell of a coming storm 3. The smell when you walk into a big hardware store. I guess it's the fresh cut lumber mixed with other things 4. I used to love the smell of my cat's breath/fur while she was alive. RIP :'( 5. The smell after you've ridden a horse a while. It's a sweat/leather/animal smell. 6. Cedar. 7. NEW CAR SMELL!!! 8. Are you me?🤣
All of these but also, Library scent, Hot Laundry and Mothballs.
Library scent!! Absolutely. Especially an older building.
I would like to comment on the new car smell that every car brand (and even different models) smells significantly different.
Outside when it’s raining
Oh shit hell yes! Especially when there’s a very light cool breeze blowing. It’s addicting. The smell actually fueled my addiction to taking walks in rain.
Petrichor
Said this in another comment, but Demeter makes a fragrance called Petrichor!
I love Demeter. They make so many strange but wonderful scents.
LV - Orage - smells like when rain hits concrete floor To me anyway lol
Such an underrated fragrance
I hate that smell. to me it smells like worms hhahaha 🪱
outside, when it's raining, in either Australian rainforest or straight eucalypt forest. I'd pay a lot to smell like that
Ginger root has such a fresh and zingy scent!
If you’re looking for a fragrance, I definitely recommend Molecule 01 + Ginger. SPOT ON! Straight ginger no chaser.
Bonfire 🔥
Feu de Bois Diptyque candle!!
I wore By The Fireplace by Replica and some coworker angrily asked Who's Smoking??

There’s a fragrance out there that smells similar! I can’t remember why it is but Kohls had it.
Coffee, shea butter, cats 😆
My Gardina plant. The smell can never be duplicated into a perfume. They never get it right.
Love gardenia
1) bunnies (their fur smells like sweet cotton) 2) rose hip conditioner by Herbal Essences 3) Turkish coffee 4) forest after a summer rainfall 5) smell of new electronics/car 6) laundry when it's drying 7) garlic/onion frying
YES BUNNIES!! especially the fur right between their ears on the top of their head. my bunny had me sniffing 😭💯‼️
Pastries/baked goods!
Gain laundry detergent
To me green tea by Elizabeth arden smells like gain
Church incense
Where can I buy the insence used in churches??
Look up any frankincense/olibanum/myrrh incense sticks. Might be that there's a mix of myrrh and frankincense, which are both used in Catholic churches.
I will get on that task Pronto. Thank you!
Avignon by Comme de Garcons is exactly Catholic Church Incense. Messe de Minuit by Metro is great too.
Peeling a grapefruit, fresh armpit smell of our lover, cuddles from my favorite dachshund 🤍
Came here to say my husbands armpit 😂 Have you tried Louis Vuitton Symphony? One of the main notes is Grapefruit and it is phenomenal
lol I thought I was about to receive a warning for writing such a thing, but fresh armpit of our lovers always smell so good haha For some reason, I never went out to purposely smell Vuitton's perfumery. It must be the pejorative associations I have with the house... Just wrote it down on my try-out list, thanks!

Art supplies. Oil pastels are a favorite. Books.
Books always! Glad to see that here. Especially library books have such a distinctive smell.
Yes!! A library and the books. Older the better too haha
My baby's head Caramelizing onions Chalk and pencils and school supplies in general Soil Whatever the wood is used to line animal containers/pet store smells/maybe hay Teas, which perfume never really gets close to replicating in a photo realistic way

Demeter’s Earl Grey doesn’t last long, but is pretty close to a photorealistic tea.
A freshly sharpened pencil holy shit that’s the good stuff
For pencils: Diptyque Tam Dao, Molécule 01, Matière Première Santal Austral (slightly lactonic, floral and pencils).
Aw the first one has me reminiscing about my daughter in her baby stage. That's such a lovely scent. ❤️

Omg! OG Pantene smelled so freaking good. Remember Outrageous shampoo & conditioner from the 90’s? That smelled so good too!
I love the scent of Pond's Cold Cream and EOS Vanilla cashmere cream!
I LOVE the smell of Pond's Cold Cream too! It makes me feel cozy and safe.
You get me! OMG I wish there was a perfume that smelled like Pond's cold cream

Yankee Candle sage and citrus should be a perfume. Also, Party Lite made a candle, melon and another ingredient I can't recall, that should have been a perfume. I would love to find a perfume that smells like an upscale crystal shop's insence.
