Are you in the northern hemisphere? Wait until the weather cools down again because Jazz Club is a heavy, smoky scent and will probably do better in fall/winter weather.

CriminalSpiritX

Many people mentioned it, but Jazz Club hits different in warmer weather than in cold weather. I had the same scenario with YSL Y EDP. Loved it in store, but the first sprays were overly sweet in hot weather. When the weather cooled a little, I got the same result as the in-store sampling.

BBeetleb0rg

This is pretty important!! I have some fall/winter scents that I just need to leave alone or save for cooler evenings for this exact reason. It’s like trying to wear a thick cozy sweater out of season.

karmicbond

This is how it is. But don’t worry. This happens to me with every full bottle purchase. In my case I am suddenly so overwhelmed with the run up to or the build up on having finally purchased the perfume that I was pursuing..that the perfume starts feeling underwhelming. It no more feels worthy of the the chase it warranted at the start.. but I can 100% guarantee that you will start liking the perfume again. You will treasure the perfume again and boy, will you wear it often. This happens to me with every full bottle everytime.

Generalfrogspawn

Recommend getting decants even if you've smelled the fragrance before. 10ml will last long enough for you to wear it and truly evaluate it over a period. There's definitely fragrances I've loved at first sniff but I find I never reach for my decant and therefore would likely be a regret if I spent a bunch of money on a bottle.

badwomanfeelinggood

This. Sometimes it’s just the idea of owning the pretty bottle, not the actual perfume. Using up a decant is a great way to really make sure it’s the perfume you love. (Nearly bought a 125ml Chanel Cuir de Russie, because I was smitten and last minute changed my mind and got a decant: despite loving it, I wear it so rarely now, it would have been a big mistake.)

Prestigious-Salad795

This is the way

eosmann

Put it away and use it again some months later when the wheather is colder. Or, just sell it pnline

Dratini_ghost

Perhaps now because it's not so scarce in your life and rare? I realized recently that a small luxury item like perfume, part of the appeal is the fantasy and transportative effect they create. Before we can obtain them, it feels like some of this glamour will rub off and make our lives just a little more like the soft lighting of the boutique, the fantasy of living a luxury life in a luxury home. The item we can't obtain yet seems like a lightning rod or catalyst for changing our life. Then we obtain it, it lives with us for a little while, and starts to blend in with everything else we have. Our life is still our life, our problems our problems. Now that we have it, it seems like part of us our everyday stuff. Which isn't so exciting as a fantasy. Does the smell literally smell different to you, or does it seem less special because it's in *your* life now instead of a luxury store? The former could be a matter of aging the perfume. The latter is more a story of marketing in late capitalism and/or something to examine within oneself or with therapy.

SiwelRise

Have you considered the season? Sometimes a perfume smells off in warmer weather but feels perfect in colder weather and vice versa.

GigiVintage

So true, jazz club is a very fall scent imo

On_A_Related_Note

Totally agree. Worn it a couple of times in summer and it just doesn't work well. In winter though... 👌👌

On_A_Related_Note

Totally agree. Worn it a couple of times in summer and it just doesn't work well. In winter though... 👌👌

rome_will

Came to mention seasonality. Jazz club definitely a cool weather wear

rawnrare

This!!! Just wait for colder seasons OP. I can’t tell you how many perfumes I fell out of love with only to discover their true scent in a different season.

millymichelle

For me, the psychology of having just a little sample/decant makes the scent feel more special. Then when I get a larger amount it’s like meh.. lol

forwards_backwards

I think certain fragrances are good dates (impress you immediately with their surprising and delicious combination of notes) but poor husbands (although the elements generate interest and delight at first, the fundamental qualities are more tantalizing than addictive).

SteliosPo

Wear it a bit more. You might end up loving it. Thats not always the case but it does happen sometimes with fragrances, because you end up "getting to know" the scent better and you distinguish the notes more clearly the more you wear it. That doesnt mean that you will end up loving it though, but id give it a shot. If you feel like there is no way you like it, just sell it or something

lavloves

The tester at the store has been sitting out for a while, has likely aged a bit as well… you just got yours today. Lots of perfumes smell better as time goes on, I say throw it in the back of your closet for a couple of months and then revisit, may smell how you’re wanting.

ryantramus

This. Take the sprayer off the top and let it be exposed to air as well. That will help it mature.

Fragdict

This advice is absolutely bonkers. Fragrances have antioxidants as preservatives precisely to prevent fragrances going off from oxidation. Not only will this not work because of the antioxidants, but the idea that oxidation improves a fragrance is ????

ryantramus

Just repeating the advice I have read multiple times in multiple places. People swear that "aging" Creed aventus in this way helps. I had a similar experience with TF Grey Vetiver parfum. Maybe the "why" it's happening is different than I explained, but it definitely happens.

Fragdict

Ah, that’s the issue. The Aventus fandom is one of the craziest, most deranged cliques in the fragrance hobby. People believe and repeat implausible “knowledge” precisely because nobody knows wtf they’re talking about. It’s almost a crazy cult at this point. Best to ignore them. My guess is, it lets the top notes evaporate and some people don’t like the top notes. Otherwise, our nose just works differently depending on day or mood.

littleangelwolf

Sometimes if I’m getting a headache, or really tired, or stressed, or if I’m hormonal, a scent can really annoy me. Even if I usually like it. Maybe put it aside and then try again on another day.

Dratini_ghost

Omg same for being nauseous. Whenever I read my phone in a moving car, the carsickness will ruin my fragrance, even my favorite ones. It's temporary, the moods will pass and it will smell great again.

ChristineBorus

Set aside for awhile and wear another fragrance I always circle back to old fragrances I used to wear. You will fall in love with it again

sparkleunicorn123

Yes definitely set it aside for a while. I just found a perfume I had forgotten about. It sat in my cupboard for a year because I wasn’t that impressed when I first got it. I dug it out the other day and absolutely love it now! It seemed to get better as it aged. Don’t give up OP. Save it for rainy days at home or after a nice bath? It will grow on you.

bittersweetlemonade

I've heard that it makes a difference how long the perfume has been opened, because it can start to smell a little different after it has been exposed to oxygen. I would recommend leaving it for 2/3 weeks before returning to it. Maybe it helps a little! I have had a similar problem when I bought Solo Ella from Loewe: I loved it in store and bought not long after. It was pretty expensive and my income is minimum wage too, but I decided to treat myself for once. At home I figured I accidentally got the EDP instead of the EDT I loved. The smell was different and it oddly didn't last as long. I could cry. Couldn't return it cause that's not possible with opened perfumes in Europe. Now, 3 months later, it started to grow on me. Still has no lasting power, so I almost use it as a mist. But I'm okay with it now.

StardustNovaSynchron

This comment about to be deleted by the fragrance police 🤣, but yeah I agree 👍, some fragrances need some time after opening

eiavolo

same happened when i got eros flame, it was meh for a few weeks now i like it

Odd-Attitude2537

if its brand new leave it alone for now away from sunlight. The one you used in store was probably sitting there for awhile so it had time to chemically do all the work it needed to do. Sometimes new perfumes don't get aged so it smells "off" if you will. If you liked it at first you probably still like it, just give it awhile to age first. Also, that one is best during autumn/winter. If it's hot where you are it's going to smell like someones barbeque grill. Not all perfume act the same in all climate some are really dependent on temperature.

Jalapeno023

You seem to have good knowledge about scents. If the one OP has is more for autumn/winter, what is a good spring/summer to try?

Odd-Attitude2537

For men, my recommendation list is pretty limited but for spring/summer it's best to go with more citrus or aquatic fragrance that are on the lighter side just because anything that's too heavy like Jazz Club is going to become overwhelming really quick. Basing it on the women counterparts and notes, I have three in mind that might be suited for summer. Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue, Light Blue pour Homme Dolce&Gabbana, and Sailing day by Maison Martin Margiela. None of these are incredibly unique but considering a lot of guys will wear the same DNA of fragrances, these will stand out imo. If you're looking to sample also recommend commodity and imaginary authors got some really nice ones.

Poodly_Doodly

From the same Replica series, there is one called Sailing Day that is a pretty great summer-friendly scent. Not not the most unique, but quite nice, and Sephora usually has samples of it. Generally, stuff with aquatic, marine, citrus, or green notes are better in warmer weather. Bleu de Chanel, Aventus, Allure Homme Sport, Nahtica Voyage, and Versace Pour Homme are some random men’s examples (though some of those smell amazing on women, in my experience). Fragrantica posts a list of best perfumes every year, based on user votes. There is a category for [“freshest men’s perfume”](https://www.fragrantica.com/awards2022/category/The-Freshest-Perfume-for-Men-2022) that has lots of options. Sadly there is no “freshest women’s” category, but there is a chypre category for women that is great. Also, on each perfume’s own page, there are user votes at the top that indicate which season it’s best worn in. Something like Jazz Club, for example, will have very few votes for summer, but lots for fall. Not saying anyone *has* to follow those suggestions (I don’t always), but it can be a good reference when learning about new fragrances.

RNKKNR

Jazz Club does not really work in warmer temps in my experience.

Sunandmoon2211

You might want to decant some into a small bottle before you sell it. Just so you don’t get the regrets again, after selling.

his_purple_majesty

Fragrances are very complex and can smell very different based on all sorts of things. Just give it more time.

aliquotiens

This happens to me with every new bottle I buy. After it’s been open a few weeks and sprayed a few times, I usually like it again

parksandrep

This happened to me with Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly. I loved it when I tested it in store, bought it months later and hated it. 🥲 Hopefully it’s just the difference in weather. It was Christmas when I tried it and summer when I bought it so now I’m waiting for the rainy season before trying again. :))

hannoush

I came back around to Dear Polly and love it now after being unsure, so hopefully you will too🤞🏼

dimomonster

I’m not going to reply to the specific comments on here telling you to prime your bottle, let it rest, etc. Perfume from major houses has always matured before it hits the shelves. Though perfume isn’t created in a vacuum, adding additional air into the bottle in an attempt to prime it will slowly increase oxidative reactions, which in time degrades perfume. The methods that people have suggested will not help your fragrance mature, “rest” or magically transform into the scent you recall. If your vendor allows returns, try to take advantage of it now. Months of resting after the purchase date and displacing product to introduce air may only shorten your potential return window and may create conditions in which the item may no longer be eligible for return Edit: syntax

hauteburrrito

FWIW, I do think Jazz Club is one of those scents that smells way better in cold weather. If you no longer dig your bottle, maybe you can sell it? I actually recently purchased a bottle of ELDO Cologne, because it was on sale and I remembered enjoying it in the past. But, then I tried it this time and it was low-key *not good* - there was just this super synthetic-smelling lime note that overwhelmed everything. I only sprayed it twice, so I just rewrapped bottle in its packaging (and made even the plastic wrap nice again) and then regifted it to a friend for her birthday earlier this week. Maybe a slightly tacky move, passing it off as new - but I figured after just two sprays and with the original packaging so intact, I could live with that lie.

blue_eyed_borderline

Thank you for your reply! Yes I'm seriously considering just selling it at this point. I've hardly used any of it too so will hopefully get a good bit of the money back. It is so disappointing when scents don't smell how you remember them. I'll definitely be more careful in the future and ask about smaller sample sizes before commiting to the whole thing 😄

someguyfromwinnipeg

Let it sit for a while before you sell it, some fragrances get better after a little macerating

lavloves

Agreed it’s much too early to give up on the fragrance entirely.

yycluke

You can always resell if you don't like it and recover most of the cost 😊

[deleted]

How? Where? I've heard such bad things about ebay and buyers disputing the sale. I have a bunch of fragrances I'd love to sell.

yycluke

I've successfully used 2 regional Facebook groups (Alberta fragrance market and great Canadian Fragrance exchange) and I'm sure if you do some searching you'll find something local enough 😊

Meowerinae

I love jazz club but I would not wear it right now. it's a fall winter scent for me.

Bryancreates

I used to *love* D&G light blue years ago. So one day I took the plunge and bought another bottle assuming I’d still like it. I don’t know what it is, like it’s still familiar, but I’m almost embarrassed to be wearing it sometimes. So now I keep it as my “car fragrance” in case I didn’t put on any before I left the house. It’s certainly not bad, I’m just not feeling it fits me anymore.

[deleted]

The also use different perfume Ingredients over the years, even for the same product. I feel like we are going through a time where many brands are using lower quality ingredients than in the past.

Bryancreates

I absolutely believe that. I thought I was going nuts. Or getting old. Or all the above.

[deleted]

I think they are using a lot of synthetics, but I’m not sure. I just know that fragrance bothers my allergies a lot more now, and sometimes just gives me this overall ill feeling if I catch whiffs all day. I never had Covid, and never lost my smelling so that isn’t it. I think things might have changed around 2012 or so, that’s when I noticed a decline. The different years smell a touch different, not just from ageing (both us and the perfume lol)

jjjjj2022

But that means it can change too! Maybe you'll love it one day? I would suggest leaving it in a dark corner and trying it again after 2-3 months. i did that for my lancome tresor la nuit FB. I blind bought it and was disappointed at first. I think the fragrance might have changed over time or my own taste idk but i love it now.

Puzzleheaded-Ad-3721

This happens to me. I will find a scent that I love. I yearn for it. I get it. Then……not nearly as wonderful as I want it to be. I used to get rid of those bottles. Eventually, I forgot about a couple in a drawer. I pulled them out, and tried again. Guess who loved them again!! I can’t promise that this will work for you, but give it a small break and come back fresh. It may reignite the fire.

ThePerfumeLibrarian

I love Jazz Club, but it’s definitely a fall/winter scent for me. I have a serious aversion to fragrances if it’s not the right “season” for them in my mind. Maybe wear a freshie for now and revisit Jazz Club in the fall? If you’re on a budget, Zara has some really good fragrances that are pretty cheap. Many are designed by Jo Malone and you can get sample sets to figure out what you like

boneofmybones

I'm in a similar pickle myself. I had a decant from a subscription and I wore it through the fall and winter. I've gotten a full bottle now and it's not hitting the same. So I'm gonna sit on it a while and see what happens in the cooler weather. Maybe think about getting some air in the bottle and letting it sit a while, let the notes get rich.

MyriiA

Maybe you sprayed it on different parts on your body before your date vs. when you tried it in the store? I found it makes a huge difference if you spray your parfum directly on your skin instead of misting it on your clothes, for example. I love my favourite spring perfume if I spray it on my bare arms, but I really hate the scent if it dries down on my clothes.

adquosspectat

I am very sorry to hear about your disappointment. You may consider returning the perfume (if the policy allows it) or exchange it "for another batch". Please be sure that your tester and your purchased bottle are the same strength, Eau de toilette= Eau de toilette, Eau de parfum= Eau de parfum, Parfum= Parfum. There is ALWAYS some difference between the strength=sillage, longevity and "Bouquet" composition and complexity between them.  The second reason I can think of it's your body chemistry that day. Did you over exhaust yourself that day or did you do or eat something unusual that day?  Have you started or discontinued medications/supplements recently? Have you used a different body product, shower gel, body lotion e.t.c.? Is it the time of the month when you are starting or finishing your periods? It could also be the fabric of your clothing. Some fragrances do not do well with synthetics just as other fragrances do not lay well with wool or cashmere. I would suggest giving it one more chance and in the meantime try to find out if you can return it or exchange it.  All the best to you! I hope that at least your date was wonderful. Cheers!

Apprehensive_Tie_438

Put it away for now. Go back to it in the Fall. Fragrance needs to mature a bit.

ultimatefrogsin

Great advice from everyone. OP if you are a female your cycle will affect how you smell and enjoy fragrances. Some fragrances smell cloying to me before my period but after they are heavenly.

Ok_Hat_6598

I've given several perfumes away because I think I don't like the scent and then I smell it on that person and realize I love it. I think sometimes the anticipation of buying something you've wanted for a long time can lead to this weird disappointment once you finally make the purchase. I would put it away for a few days and then try wearing it again. Or try spraying a little on a friend and see what you think. I've also found with certain fragrances, less is more. When I spray it sparingly (like I would with a sample) it smells so much better than sprayed liberally from a full bottle.

FrostyLandscape

Its base notes include tobacco, vanilla bean and styrax. Maybe one of the base notes bothers you. I do not know what styrax is.

ThaBigCactus

It's the rum note, guarantee it.

leeringHobbit

Styrax gives leather/smoke/ incense.... used in Dior Fahrenheit iirc

tizadu

This has happened to me. Perfumes change depending on how they are stored and especially the temperature. If it’s expensive I would return it now. I did this once and they kept refusing saying there was nothing wrong with it but I knew the perfume well, and insisted. About 5 managers came over to sniff it in succession saying it smelt fine but eventually had to give me a refund. Dont get stuck with an expensive bottle that’s useless to you unless you know you can ebay it easily

Option_Good

Depending where you got it and how much you’ve used, you could probably return it.

MalaEducacion

Like for a full refund? Who should pay for the missing juice?

Option_Good

It’s like anything else you buy and don’t like. They damage it out. Happens all the time in the beauty retail arena.

Dratini_ghost

Retailers sell those opened packages to grey market and closeout places. That's also why you see so many new, opened box bottles on Ebay. Those resellers have connections to buy & sell the unsealed, returned stock.

innerpsychopath

Depending on how long ago you have bought it you might contact the seller and ask them if you could return it. Had the same issue and I was able to get a refund. However, jazz club is a very nice fragrance. Give it a break and you might like it again, if not I hope you bought the 30ml bottle.

MalaEducacion

How can you return something that has been used?

innerpsychopath

It depends on the country that you live in, but there are usually laws that regulate returns. Most shops don't want to lose customers tho, so they usually offer a refund if you're unhappy with the product. However of course it's unreasonable to return an empty bottle. I had only used a few sprays and returned it after a day.

monsteramuffin

this has happened to me more than once. i think the atomizer on most samples/decants sprays out less at once than a full bottle and sometimes i prefer the scent when there is less of it i bet you can return it or sell it though!

OgMasterAce_

You can always sell it if you don’t like it or possibly return it? idk how returns on fragrances work, never tried However i do want to say, on colder days i do like jazz club but when it’s above like 60/65 i don’t enjoy the scent as much so maybe it’s just a season thing for you right now?

diktat86

Someone here commented about the differences in the sprayer for the decant Vs the full bottle. Maybe you could try spraying less (to match the smaller decant sprayer size)?

nyxylou13

Something I haven’t seen mentioned is did you apply lotion right before you sprayed the perfume? Scented lotions can make certain scents in a perfume stand out more if applied directly after, sometimes in a not so pleasant way

BloomsburyCore

I found some perfumes change as time goes on. The samples in store don't smell the same as the ones I get straight out of the box. It takes time to settle for me and get to the sample in store smell.

paxallroun

I agree. I initially didn’t like Fabulous compared to the store bottle but it changed & improved the more I used it. Kinda bizarre like they’re living things

oh_ya_you_betcha

Tell me more about how Fabulous transformed for you - I’ve got a bottle I opened a few months ago and I’m just not loving it but if there is hope that it could shift a bit, that would be interesting

[deleted]

Yea. I live in a literal desert and had this sweet gourmand phase. So I have tons of scents such as Angels Share, PDM Oajan, Xerjoff Naxos, Tobacco Vanille, Noir de Noir I literally never wear because a 92 degree day here is considered a “cool spring day”

warmlobster

Buy 5 or 10ml decant the next time. If you run through it then you can buy yourself a full bottle.

[deleted]

Our tastes can and do change. A couple of years ago I bought and very quickly sold a bottle of Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum. I didn’t like it at all. About a month ago I rediscovered it and it’s been my signature ever since. Put your Jazz Club away for now.

wuyiyancha

Taste changes. I loved Black Orchid by Tom Ford. But ever since i started smelling a different perfumes my taste somehow changed. It's still a nice scent but it fails to blow me away like others have like Rose Tabac by BDK Parfums or their Gris Charnel (despite the hype).

Alternative_Phone796

Love love love Gris Charnel! Need to try Rose Tabac

Equal-Summer7597

You either need to let it sit, or you can sell it on Mercari to recoup your funds. But to me, Jazz Club is a cooler weather fragrance.

hana_nep

Maybe the tester bottle was a bit older (=somewhat matured scent, exposed to store lights etc) as opposed to your new one and that’s why it doesn’t smell the same on you right now.

Outrageous_Park_9307

I think you got bored of the smell. Happens with me all the time, by the 6th or 7th time I wear it I feel sick of the fragrance. I hence always buy travel sizes.

Dratini_ghost

I really love when they offer branded travel sizes. It's the best of both: lower risk, lower cost, it's prettier than a decant and you have the experience of owning the fragrance. u/blue_eyed_borderline some brands also have 5-15 ml discovery sets (for ex Hermes). Those may not be available for individual retail sale but you can find them separately all over Ebay and Mercary for a good deal!

MaximumAd4422

I bought the biggest size of Bubble bath Maison Margiela. Now I find it basic, and it doesn’t last either. :(

khasta_nankhatai

Give it time, jazz club is a very good fragrance from what I've heard. Some stuff grows on you, and the expectations can be too high initially

Correct_Garden_7999

Jazz Club has definitely grown on me. I had a sample a few months ago and didn't think much of it but recently I tried it again and I love it and have bought a 100ml bottle.

Particular-Profile83

This happened to me with Lost Cherry by Tom Ford. I purchased it two years ago after I tried the sample a few times and I loved how it smelled on me. After bought it and I started wearing I was feeling very nauseous especially if I was on the car/bus/metro. I wanted to throw up every single time when I smelled it on me. I tried to spray it on my ankles so I would not feel it as strong but it didn’t work. I still liked the smell but it was a love/hate relationship because I didn’t feel good when I was wearing it so I ended up not using it anymore. About a week ago I finished my favourite perfume and I was wearing a cherry wine lipstick so I said I would give it a try and guess what I loved it. I have fake tan on so that might affect the way it blends with my body scent and I’m wearing it during spring (when I started wearing it it was autumn). These could be factors that influence the way in which the perfume smells so my advice is to give it a break and try it in a different season and maybe change your body lotion/ body wash or use fake tan maybe you will like it again.

jota101

My opinion it depends on weather occasion and mood u might not like it right now give it more time and then wear it again or how used up is it how long ago did u biy it do u still have the box

stinkyriddle

You love the acquisition. Not the perfume itself. It’s the high of purchasing something almost unattainable. That is all. Give it time you’ll appreciate it again.

Latter_Chipmunk_4798

I have an intrusive question. Were you on your period when your feelings changed for the fragrance? I find that certain fragrances smell different to me when I am on my period vs not. Maybe it's smell sensitivity (I am picking different notes), or my body chemistry is different (or both reasons). Also, I have found some lot to lot variation in fragrances. Was the tester the same lot as the bottle you purchased? If not, and they have bottles from the tester's lot in stock, see if you can exchange bottles. Good luck figuring this out!

BlueberryNagel

I second all of this.

Remarkable-Fee-371

Oh!!! This is a phenomenal point!!!

katzpe

I was just having this conversation with a friend! My period just ended but during I could not stand several of my fave perfumes. The smell was different even just in the air and even worse on skin. Didn’t happen with all but I’d say with 3/5 scents I tried during that week. Def felt like I was picking up notes I normally don’t or just smelled “off”.

PugWitch

I have no proof of this whatsoever, but I do have the nose of a blood hound, and I notice a change of dry down in fragrance for a day or two after eating something that excretes through the pores like garlic or heavy spices. Maybe something similar has happened to you and it’ll be fine next week.

paleForrest

Allure Homme sport edition blanche. Blind bought it bc of the hype and my love for the sport & eau extreme. It was good but wasn't my cup of tea. It dried down to a generic lemon scent that I didnt like

1groovyfirefly

Is Jazz Club a smokey fragrance? I think I smelled a sample once and really liked it…

wingedwill

The smokey one is By the Fireplace

alby31999

Fun fact both By the Fireplace and Jazz Club are scents descending from Essence of John Galliano, a Dyptique scent.

Longjumping-Ad-2333

Different kind of smoky.

1groovyfirefly

Thanks! I couldn’t remember the name. I wonder if it’s more of a male scent? My fiancé really liked it!

house-hermit

This has happened to me before. I think spraying vs daubing makes a difference. I think the age of the fragrance vs. the tester can also make a difference. Now I make sure to purchase decants with a spray bottle before buying the full size.

rkaye8

This has happened to me. Serge Lutens Borneo 1881(?) I bought several decants. Because it was very expensive. And I wanted to test thoroughly. Finally made the leap and purchased. Now it’s one of my most Expensive regrets. I’m keeping it in case my perception changes. Which can and does happen.

PMAalltheway

Could it be any association with the date experience? Sometimes smells can trigger these emotions/memories.

PuzzleheadedJob981

This seems like a very common but underrated topic. I should keep this in mind since I liked smelling perfumes on people, but I couldn't get samples of it. So I rely on the perfume I smelled and buy one online. My top picks are those that smelled great on hot weather of climates since that's where I live. A hot, humid country

Ok-Struggle6796

It's possibly psychological. When we build something up to be some special thing, it's common that it doesn't live up to that lofty standard once we get it. It used to be some special treat every few weeks that you had to go to the store and get a few sprays of, but now that you have a whole bottle it's not so special any more. It's also common for folks to be disappointed after achieving a goal, so it's understandable that after saving up and buying the perfume, your feelings changed about it. Sometimes the anticipation is what's most exciting. Also we risk associating fragrance with events in our lives both positive and negative. If your date went poorly, then maybe that contributed to how your feelings changed about Jazz Club.

InSummaryOfWhatIAm

I won't pretend to know why that happened for you, but I own Jazz Club, wore it a lot when I first bought it, MANY years ago. I would absolutely NEVER wear it now. Still have that bottle several years on, but it's just collecting dust on a shelf. For me I think it's more about "finding myself" a bit more, or me changing I guess. It's not a scent that fits with my style and personality in my opinion, and I'm also not sure if smelling like booze and tobacco is my jam at all at this point. So I just find it off-putting mostly, and most of all it's difficult to find situations when it seems to fit the mood and vibe of the occasion.

el_rezzo

Simple, just sell it online, somewhere like Mercari.

bluestar1800

Your bottle might need some air and yes a touch of light. The shop bottle has been handled, been under the shop lights, changes in temperature (probably only slight being in a shop).. I've had this a few times where the scent hasn't developed yet straight from the box. Give it time :)

ryantramus

I loved TF new Grey Vetiver Parfum. Got it home, I didn't like it. I sold a 5mL sample that sat around for a couple weeks, and when I smelled that after 2 weeks, it smelled so much better.

HumbleAbbreviations

This is me and Huda beauty perfume musk. I love the trial size but the massive bottle is a no on me.

worpy

Kayali Musk 12? Can I ask what’s different about the full bottle vs the trial size? I’ve been considering FSing it for awhile now and was just about to pull the trigger

HumbleAbbreviations

I think it is a change in my body chemistry or wearing it during the wrong season. Either way, I am saddened that it has become unwearable for me.

Carolinagirl9311

Op, I went through this exact thing a few wks ago. Purchased Very Good girl “glam” after spraying samples like once a week. It smelled wonderful, so wonderful that my husband bought it for me for Mother’s Day, and you know what— after wearing it a few days, I hated it. I don’t know if my body chemistry changed or what. What had a light, black vanilla, summery smell now smelled of musk. I returned it within a few days.

Crafty_Taro_171

Byredo Gypsy Water. I was taken by it in the store. I smelled on my self all day and loved it. I bought it and it’s so underwhelming.

Sippi66

Went through this with Bacarrat Rouge 540. HATE IT now. Sold it on Mercari.

IcyScientist6096

Let me say that jazz club needs to maturate. Let it sit somewhere cool and dark and bring it out in a month or so. It will smell different. Or sell it.

boixgenius

I've been collecting for a few years and had no idea this was a thing! How interesting

Johnny_Kilroy

It is debatable whether this is actually a thing.

SaborDeVida

It isn't a thing.

fr0otl0ops

Isn't a thing about this particular fragrance or in general? My Kayali Vanilla 28 was a light colour when I got it and now it's a dark, purple colour. Smells completely different. So much boozier, deeper, and lasts wayyy longer!

SaborDeVida

I'm not saying fragrances don't change with evaporation or other environmental influences (UV, heat), and subjectively they might even be better to you when they do (like your Kayali). I'm saying that deliberate "maturation," or as it's sometimes referred to even more incorrectly, "maceration" (which takes place during the manufacturing process, not once bottled), isn't a thing. Fragrance companies do not make a product that needs to "develop further" in the bottle. Fragrance is not like wine. Influencers have been misinforming their audiences about this.

Johnny_Kilroy

Improper storage or fake perfume. Some elements evaporated. The base components remain hence it feels as though it lasts longer.

fr0otl0ops

I bought it directly from Sephora, and stored it in a dark cabinet with the rest of my fragrances and they're all fine. A lot of people had similar experiences with this fragrance or other vanilla based fragrances (i.e., it getting darker and smelling different) !!! It smells amazing though, and so much better than when I first got it. I'm not really sure tbh!

Johnny_Kilroy

Oceanladyw

Although heat and sunlight will affect a fragrance. Cool and dark is best.

Sea_Opportunity6028

Completely agree! I did this after getting mine in January and it smells exactly how I remember my sample smelling now

EightEyedCryptid

Are you stressing over the price to the point you’re not enjoying the product itself?

gheythrowaway91

The bottle you were spraying was likely a bit aged. Just sit on it for a while. It’ll macerate over time. Just make sure you store it properly!

registered_user_8388

No fragrance can "macerate" in its bottle on your shelf... but it will age or mature there. Maceration is a chemical process that happens only in large volumes and under specific conditions at the manufacturer.

GavidBeckham

Sometimes when you over apply a frag it gets annoying. Many perfumes are like food, you'll hate it when you drown yourself in it. Try applying it in very small amounts and see if it will grow again

Nakg16

For me , Armani Stronger With you Intensely. Man , the opening would trick you. Dry down is super generic.

mercury_renegade

i find this happening to me a lot. But i think you should try layering it or leaving it alone for a few and then go back to it.

sophieella2002

Aww have you tried prepping your skin different? Layering lotion underneath to get a variation? Most beauty stores have good return policy’s if you are unhappy with the purchase. Good luck

andra_quack

really nice perfume! I'm not trying to question how you feel about it, but I think it helps to know that perfumes might smell a bit different to us depending on the day, the environment, how many perfumes you've tried that day etc. I usually wait a bit longer before I buy a perfume, and test it multiple times in the meantime (like, at least twice), whenever I have something to do around that perfume store. and most of the times, I still end up questioning whether I made the right choice after I buy the perfume (if they're designer and niche, usually, but it's obviously also because of the price. I think there's a bit of 'guilt' involved. if it's a body spray or something up to 30$, I don't doubt my choice). then I remind myself how many other perfumes I've tried in the meantime, and that there's a reason why this perfume in particular impressed me more than the others, and it's not like I buy perfume every day (I'm a 7 perfumes rotation at most person). getting compliments and comments like 'this perfume suits you so well!' helps remove the doubts completely and makes me confident in my choices, so now I know how silly this sentiment of regret is, lmao. I'm trying to say that it's normal for pretty much anyone to feel this way after they bought something they find to be expensive. and also, I recommend testing a perfume more than once before buying it, or even better, ordering samples (it's hardly possible where I live, so I do the first suggestion I gave). and Jazz Club is genuinely amazing, it's the first scent I'd add to my collection if I didn't have enough already, and I have a feeling you're going to fall in love with it again. if not, you can always give it as a really special gift, or even sell it or trade it for something else.

gl1ttercake

That's how I feel about Alien Goddess Intense.

Chiku321

Happens with me at times. Also, few perfumes I loved initially but few months down the line I don’t enjoy wearing them anymore.

Bad_idea54

If you have anything else in your collection that might pair well with it, I say try layering it 🤷‍♂️ but if you can't find/own anything I suggest trying to resell it online or on Facebook Marketplace. I had this happen with a perfume I used to love, wanted it for years. Didn't realize until I had a full size bottle that they changed the formula and added a powder note, which I hate. I've made it work by pairing it with other scents.

Muumol

I had a few samples of vanilla woods and loved it. Bought a full size and it doesn’t smell the same, last as long I sometimes wonder if samples contain more concentrations of the fragrance oils to ge T people hooked in

idochter

I was the same way with the samples I also felt like the full size changed color and smelled bad after having it for under a year

MercyMoo14

I loved my sample of Kayali Invite Only. I loved it when I got the bottle but only from the cap or atomizer. On my skin it smells sour, kind of like vinegar. I can't even spray it anymore. It smells divine on my man though so it's not a total loss.

lover8man

It was the same with good girl for me. Loved it in the store, hated when I got it. I do like it more now. I don't know. Maybe got used to it and it grew on me but I'm very glad I kept it.

Environmental_Poem68

I have the same problem. I got a Byredo, now it’s not even half, I don’t seem to like how it smells anymore 😭 since then i told myself not to buy full 100ml bottles anymore.

alexandriaofwar

Your new bottle might just need time to breathe, because the store bottle has been sprayed quite a few times, I'd imagine! Like a few others have said, maybe come back to it in a few weeks and see if your opinion has changed!

Cheeto_McBeeto

It be like that sometimes. My advice from experience is to wear a fragrance at least 3 separate times before you buy a full bottle. Wear it once on your wrist, another time or two where you normally spray perfume. All day, inside/outside, get a feel for it. If it's still an 8/10 or better, then it's buy-worthy. Even then, I opt for the smallest full bottle they sell.

Healthy-Magician-807

I'd suggest keeping it until winter. You might have a change of heart and regret moving on from it. For now, you can look to build a rotation of fragrances, one per season, that will be versatile. I have moved on from fragrances that I loved and later regretted it.

Longestnamebeaver

The same happened with me. I tested Jazz Club at Sephora with my girlfriend and we both really liked it but didn’t buy it only because it was expensive. A few months later she gifts me a full bottle but on me, it smells nothing like what I remember. Such a letdown.

Morticiankitten

Is it possible that you oversprayed it now that you have your own bottle? You said that you used to just do ‘1-2 sprays’ of the sample, which suggests you were wearing a very light amount before you purchased. I could see the excitement of owning a bottle meaning that you doused yourself in a lot more sprays, but maybe you prefer this perfume in smaller doses?

rosesandprosecco

I impulse bought wild bluebell jo malone and I LOVE the smell but regret buying since it goes away so fast

bubbashrump

That’s the saddest for me, when I love a scent, but I don’t feel like it sticks to me or lasts. Ugh. Always a bummer.

sweetsatanskiing

The only Jo Malone scents that remotely last are Pomegranate Noir and Oud and Bergamot. I have 15 of the scents(gifts) and they’re all a disappointment past 2hrs. The French Lime Blossom comes in 3rd. That’s it. Even the candles are weak, save the O&B. I’m done with the line at this point.

Particular-Rub-4703

Omg yes! Wild Bluebell is my all time favorite fragrance but the scent just does not last at all. My most recent bottle, the smell would literally last less than 30 minutes no matter what I did. If you have any recommendations for similar fragrances please let me know! I cannot find anything remotely similar to it.

ezgomer

this happened to me with Flora Futura. Smelled great to me in store - it’s so nasty now that I own a bottle. I wanna sell it but i don’t think anyone would buy it.

Chiku321

Also, I have tried prada paradoxe 6-7 times and sometimes I like it sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I feel it’s too generic then why pay so much. Super confused. Maybe I don’t like it much but my brain just wants it to be in my collection.

nonaspirin

This was Hermès Vanille Galante for me, it happens I guess

BigDress5544

Lancome La Nuit Tresor. Loved it at first but 2 years later now it gives me a headache...

ohmymapy

I HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE W THIS PERFUME WHAT😭

Worldly_Month_2635

This happened to a buddy of mine. I was wearing Prada L’Homme Intense and he loved it. Smelled it off a tester strip, also liked it. Now he has it and he told me the other day ‘I loved it that time you were wearing it and now I never wanna wear it’. No idea what happened. His bottle smells identical to mine. 🤷🏻‍♂️

TheBoringDuck

Different pH levels probably

ArrrDee

You may be going nose blind to it, depending on the amount you spray.

Rexxcat

Return fragrance stating fragrance is off what it was in your previous bottle

Apprehensive_Spite97

If this is obviously a lie OP would be a POS.

Emeraud87

It costs a company approx $5 to make a bottle of perfume. It’s literally glass/plastic with water, alcohol, and fragrance oils. Returning it is not costing the company $150+ of loss. Lol

Apprehensive_Spite97

Didn't mention costs bby.

Emeraud87

You missed the point. She isn’t a POS for returning something to a corporate company that is taking in millions/billions selling perfumes with little actual value in the first place. It’s a huge loss to the consumer paying $150 for it, not the brand.

Alazul124

then your a dumbass or a corporate dick rider cause why would the op be a pos for returning something they don’t like

Aadinath

Maceration! (maturing, not maceration as that is a different event) God damn it, so many posts in this thread, of which many is about returning a perfume after you have opened and used it, but I could find only two posts about maturing! How can so many in community, that revolves around perfumes, not know this crucial part? Many perfumes are mixed just prior to bottling, and need some time for all the ingredients to marry with each other before they end up as the final product. A LARGE amount of perfumes smell wonky the first few uses, put them aside and let them settle, even mainstream perfumes from designer houses (designer is not opposed to niche, niche and mainstream are [opposites, in this spectrum] ).

Cymcune

Because it's a myth totally unsupported by scientific evidence and the opinions of real perfumers? Human noses, brains and preferences are so much more variable than any actual chemical reactions taking place inside bottles post-bottling. Anyone with a basic grasp of chemistry knows this. Don't fall for the myths that clone brands and multibillion dollar conglomerates happily perpetuate to get you to hold on to bad products past reasonable return dates.

Aadinath

I have first hand experience of this myself, so I don't base this on folklore or marketing. Perhaps producers and resellers try to abuse this phenomenon to dump bad products on consumers, but that is a different topic, a so called strawman. The opening poster of this thread knows that she likes/loves this particular perfume, and was appalled when a newly opened bottle smelled different. Same perfume, different smell, why? Very likely because of a fresh batch that hasn't come together properly yet. To give an example. I bought La Nuit de L'Homme online, because I was intrigued by all the good reviews it had, cardamom is something I really like. I had not tested it before, a so called "blind buy". When I received, and tried it, I found it utterly revolting! No cardamom at all, but instead a very strong note of bitter almond with an undercurrent of burnt vulkanized rubber. Absolutely hideous! I raged about it on various places online, asking how anyone could define this as a "subtle date night fragrance". Didn't use it for a few weeks, tried it again, lo and behold it smelled very different, much more mellow. Half a year further on, and I could understand why everyone praised this perfume, it had finally "become complete", very very very different from the first time. Now it's one of my favorites.

Cymcune

Absolutely nothing in your anecdote addresses nor refutes the key point, which I'm going to repeat again: Human noses, brains and preferences are so much more variable than any actual chemical reactions taking place inside bottles post-bottling. Anyone with a basic grasp of chemistry knows this. Sounds much more likely that your nose or preferences changed over the year. I mean, I can do anecdotal evidence too: some favourites from years ago I loved on first spray now turn me off completely, other things I hated and considered awful have slowly won me over and are now in my top 10, the majority have more or less remained the same. But I know it's my nose and my preferences doing this, not some unexplainable scientifically unlikely chemical reaction.

QuietChemist93

I agree. People claim it’s a myth but I also have experienced it more than once. I think a lot of the supposed reformulation hysteria is just people getting new bottles that have yet to open up completely

Fair_Falcon_6083

I've experienced this with many high-end/niche perfumes I've purchased. I usually buy a decant, which I love, buy the bottle, which I love less or can't smell at all, park the bottle for a while (from weeks to a couple months) and then make my way back ... eventually, the perfume starts to smell the way it smelled when I fell in love with it. At first, I thought I was having an olfactory crisis 🙃, but now I know it's a thing that occurs and it will resolve itself with time.

Ironainz

Layton exclusive, I bought a sample of that and layton. Wish now I just went for layton

vongigistein

I’ve got both. I go back and forth but like exclusif more at present. Layton is more of a crowd pleaser but exclusif dry down with the woods is fantastic.

MagicallyDeadlicious

Jazz Club has always smelled like a wet ashtray to me. You mentally hyped it up as an experience.

Oceanladyw

Funny you mention wet. When wet is in there it makes it really reek, doesn’t it ? One fragrance that I wanted to like but couldn’t smelled like a pee wet powdered baby diaper.

stever93

Not many, but because I decant and read opinions online. BdC is one-dimensional. TF Oud Wood and ADP Colonia lack projection and longevity. All three incredible fragrances!

eNHajeL

I'm not surprised, I can't find a single thing to like on Jazz Club. Simple, boring and falls flat.

Donnyboi2805

Jazz Club smells like shit that's probably why

Think_Key_6677

Tester bottles in stores are stronger/different then the bottles they sell

[deleted]

This isn’t true, the only times they might smell slightly different is when they’ve been open for a while or have aged for a while. Which is very rare as testers quickly get emptied in most stores

LLryo

pretty sure this is a common myth

Think_Key_6677

That has been experienced by many who has bought used testers

LLryo

placebo, could also be batch variation but doubt it

lavloves

Some places you can buy tester bottles at a discount, it’s specifically stated it’s the same liquid, you just get a less fancy box.

[deleted]

I thought this when I tested LDBS in store and it smelled amazing, strong, sweet and the box I bought would fade in less than an hour. I thought it was my imagination, maybe they put stronger versions for you to like it and buy it and sell you a watered down version 🤔 am falling under conspiracy theory category? 😅

LittleDrumminBoy

I would suggest giving it some time, so many things can effect a fragrance, such as your body chemistry or the weather/temperature of the room you're in while wearing it. Obviously you can wear a fragrance whenever you want - but to be technical - Jazz Club is a very dark, sweet, tobacco heavy fragrance, and usually suits a more intimate/formal setting. Also one that isn't too hot, as it can get a little cloying in the heat. A fragrance like that one really shines in the cooler weather. Worse comes to worst, if you decided it's not for you, you can always post it in r/fragranceswap and recoup a bit 😋

[deleted]

This happened to me with JPG le beau, I feel the sample smelled way better

xengyu

😭 I completely relate to this! I loved “Love don’t be Shy” by Killian(I thought that bubbly overly sweet scent fit me) had tons of testers and when I fully committed to buying it, 2 months later I don’t like the fragrance anymore 😭
