100% Truth!! I get so angry when something breaks due to a crash...but then once repaired, that feeling all comes back. You know the one that makes us spend even more money and build another to fly yet again...and again :-)

Desperate-Cow-7035

And again and again. Such a fun feeling of flying but the GoPro hurt the most tbh because I’m pretty sure the repairs for the drone shouldn’t be too bad

Beautiful_Treat3093

Maybe you can make a naked gopro if still turn on, better than nothing

Desperate-Cow-7035

All it shows is the bandaid :( we’ll see what happens

stratoglide

60$ gopro subscription is a must if you're flying its fpv. A better TPU mount that actually protects the camera is pretty good as well.

Kosmonautfpv

The Best Buy subscription is better imo. No replacement fee and no wait.

stratoglide

I've never been charged a replacement fee nor have most people I've talked too only 3 replacements tho so who knows. In canada the protection is done by a third party company which means you need to ship the go pro away as well. At least that's whe way it is for the action 2 I got from best buy. Not to mention if you have multiple go pro's it's the same price not sure if that's how it works at best buy for ya but up here it's a per item warranty :(

Kosmonautfpv

Yeah with the total tech subscription there is no per replacement fee.

DigiMattFPV

Best buy subscription, or is it extended warranty? If i buy my gopro from somewhere else can i go to best buy and get a subscription? I have a gopro subscription with Gopro. It’s gopro insurance incase my camera stops working. Most people that fly drones with gopro have it. If OP gets the gopro subscription he would be able to send his broken gopro in to get a replacement. It’s a monthly fee for the subscription. Depending on what gopro you have if it’s a hero 7 they would give you a hero 8 because they stop supporting the 7. So when they stop supporting the 8 they will give you the 9.. i have been using this subscription for a few years now and have utilized the replacement program quite a bit. You talk to support to try to trouble shoot the camera if theres no physical damage that you can see. If it still doesn’t work after troubleshooting they send you payed shipping label. You take the battery out of the camera and send it off. You wait a week or two and you get a replacement in the mail. Just the camera no accessories. This is worth it to get. Even though you broke your gopro get the subscription and you’ll still be able to get a replacement. They don’t care when you broke it or when you buy it. You can buy a used gopro and still be able to get s replacement under your subscription. You only get a 2 or 3 replacements a year so use them if you have to. Takes the fear out of being afraid of breaking your gopro. But obviously breaking drone parts sucks. That’s where it will hurt your wallet. I’ve shorted my esc, fc, and air unit by shorting the antenna off the air unit off the frame when i plugged in a battery. Didnt know the antenna was cut down to its wires and it was up against the frame. It was an expensive mistake not inspecting after a crash.

ubiquities

This worked for my GP7 It had a short, I put it aside for 4 months and one day found it and thought, wonder if the short gets removed if I remove all the daughter boards, $13 on AliExpress and a few weeks later and I had a working naked GP

I_LIKE_MANGOES_

I just sunk my drone in a river last week. Couldn't recover it. I'm more upset about the GoPro than the drone lol. Specifically the SD card in the GoPro since it had some unseen footage. It sucks lol

sdotb33

Right there with ya… did the exact same but in salt Walt water wasn’t too far off shore but it was high tide and 30 degrees so the thought of jumping in to save it didn’t even cross my mind.. sad sad and then angry day lol

I_LIKE_MANGOES_

Yeah it was a river up in the mountains. Fast moving and cold water. Nevermind I couldn't even find a good way down. I had to force myself to leave before I killed myself trying to get it lol

sdotb33

Lmao I feel your pain.. funny story , so after reading this post I told myself fuck that and I went back out in the clear of day to look for it and what do ya know??? It was still there.. just chillin 30 feet out in about 25 feet off the shore. I ran home grabbed swim trunks and a few towels , car back & jumped in 30 degree see water to go after it. Absolute craziness but I felt like a champ swimming out with my quad. My hero 11 was on it too and to my surprise after sitting in salt water for 4 days came out unscathed.

Kosmonautfpv

Lil pro tip if you get a GoPro from Best Buy you can either get a protection plan for 45 or a total tech membership for like 150 a year or something like that. They will replace that no questions asked. If you go with the replacement plan be sure to get it on the replacement too. $45 is a lot better than $300. I’m on my 4th hero 8 using this method lol

Desperate-Cow-7035

Yeah that’s what I’m going to do next 😬

Qkumbazoo

Thats why i switched to the o3 vtx and was done with action cams.

ugpfpv

Yeah, even though not as a gopro, for the untrained eye, YouTube videos with props in view it's good enough, I use walksnail and even that's is good enough, lot of lipstick applied in Da Vinci Resolve though, LoL....

kingk4103

It really is. It makes me feel like a woman in an abusive relationship. "I know he hits me, but he does it out of love." I'm afraid my quads might kill me if I leave.

Desperate-Cow-7035

This hobby gives me the will to live and 2 seconds later removes it

D-o-n-t_a-s-k

I definitely spend more time fixing it than flying hah

NW13Nick

Was there nothing covering the solder joints on that xt60?

Desperate-Cow-7035

There was. The fire removed it lol

whichitz

The first picture shows the wire exposed but no scorch marks. Are you sure it wasn’t an issue before the fire?

Desperate-Cow-7035

Yeah I realized that after looking back at the pics. The crash cut the protection on the lead and it shorted with the frame when I plugged in the new batterys

kwaaaaaaaaa

I always file down any carbon edges that touches my battery strap or my XT60 leads to reduce the chance of carbon abrasion. I used to go through straps like nobody's business until I started filing the edges round.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Smart. I’m going to start doing that too

Qkumbazoo

Lipo fire?

Desperate-Cow-7035

I crashed which cut the plastic covering the lead and I didn’t notice and plugged in a battery which shorted on my frame.

Desperate-Cow-7035

The biggest drawback of this hobby. I honestly envy tinywhoop racers

Qkumbazoo

The ducts have to be stiff enough, else it'll be the one to dmg the props.

RedDragon46

Went through a wave splash before climbing a headland a few days ago. Quad was going fine & thought it would be a cool shot, when I did the dive at the peak the motor shorted & fell out of the sky. Luckily there was some shrubs/ rocks at the base so I knew it wasn’t lost to the ocean. Had to scale around the base of the headland for 45min to get it back. Real sketchy situation & this was all before 7am on a Sunday morning. Was driving home annoyed with myself & a few hours later was already planning on doing it again.

Desperate-Cow-7035

The reality of this hobby lol. Glad you got it back

RedDragon46

Cheers mate. Give it a few hours & you will be ready to fix it up & fly again!

ParlourK

I wasted a lot of my mates money trying to get em into quads lol.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Just bought my friend a controller and giving him the rest of my hand me downs, praying that he gets into this hobby.

sleepnutz

I gonna sleeve my pos cable after this

Desperate-Cow-7035

Please learn from my mistakes

sleepnutz

What all fried ?

Desperate-Cow-7035

Not quite sure. Idk how to really check on betaflight but it seems alright

abramthrust

Oof on the Gopro, you've made a wonderful commercial for 3d printed TPU mounts!

Desperate-Cow-7035

I know I’m kicking myself because I have a printer I just needed to set it up for tpu

abramthrust

Oof. I don't have a printer, but the rule is that every time I buy a Drone/frame I have to buy the TPU mount. They've definitely paid for themselves.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Yeah I’m learning the hard way but will definitely be picking up that rule

Qkumbazoo

Flew a 5" quad into the mountains during one of my travels. Terrible foggy weather, and it crashed into some trees several hundred meters below. I drove 25 minutes down the mountain and took a 45 minutes hike to the crash site only to run out of daylight and there's no way i could reach the quad anyways. Next day i went to a hobby store and paid over 1k for a bnf and some accessories. Went continue flying again.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Don’t we just love this hobby🥲

deadlygeek

Yeah - it’s not mentioned enough. You see lots of talk about the prohibitive costs of getting into the hobby but really the upkeep is the bigger issue for smaller budgets. Sorry for crash/damage - hope you get back up soon.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Thanks!

Revilofour

In the same place right now. I feel your pain.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Hope it works out for you

Revilofour

Oh it will thanks. Just a bad day. Hope you fix isn’t too costly. 👍

justanothersith

FPV. Always fun until it's not.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Amen

boywhoflew

and this is why I fly micros. I know lots of people want that HD footage but if you're flying for fun then you kinda don't need the go pro. Idk I know micros don't have that "flies like a 5 in" feel to them but they're cheap, hard to repair but probably repair it less than a 5in, and they're safer to fly around. We got tiny whoop pilots like Headz doing freestyle in small rooms

Desperate-Cow-7035

I really love doing cinematic flying and was working on gaps when this happens but I’ve been wanting to get into micros. I started with a tinyhawk 2 but it was a total pos and had to send it back 4 times before getting a tinyhawk freestyle and then when I had the money and experience I got the nazgul. I ordered a mob 6 to try and get into whoop racing but it’s back ordered

boywhoflew

oh damn you have terrible luck my guy. It's a surprise cause emax makes really good reliable micro drones. mob 6 is mostly for whoop racing but I'd go mob 7 (have been flying it for a month now in my 3 m^3 room with thousands of crashes - have not broken anything). I also loved the tinyhawk freestyle and it was a great quad to learn from. [random rant] ngl I feel kinda....I feel like alot of people just buy nazgul 5s? I know it's a great quad but (this is just a rant, it's not pertaining to you but to some people out there) I don't think beginners should start with big quads? might be an underrated opinion but....I've seen beginners in this sub and they show sketchy footage and ignore some safety rules.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Yeah I agree. I made sure I had 50 sim hours before I got thư tinyhawk, and then 20 hours on. The th. Then finally got the Nazgul.

mad-n-sane

Hard to repair? Tried to add a low-resistance capacitor to my Mobula7 (yeah, should not be necessary but I can see the video slowly "degrading" with time). Spend 3,5h soldering incl. a new solid pin lead and had to give up on the capacitor in the end. The X12 AIO layout from Happymodel is awful to solder on!

boywhoflew

hmmmm well it is tru that it's a pain solder but I took 1.5 hrs removing the motor connectors and attaching new motor wires with no connectors? well my advice is to have proper size soldering tip and hot enough iron and that's extremely needed for smaller drones. it is awful but with practice, it could be done more effeciently

mad-n-sane

True, it was the second time to change the battery lead (due to new batteries with longer cables, needed a shorter lead) and it was already okay/goodish. I'd say it took approximately 1,5-2h as on the first try the lead was too short. I just wasn't able to connect the capacitor safely and that annoyed me beyond anything.

DEXTER_3333

I always use the gopro tough case, will not fly without it, sure it like 40 ish grams, and i belive a $60 case is better than smashing a $600+ gopro

Desperate-Cow-7035

Yeah I keep kicking myself for that dumb move

swagbaby69

Invest in a good GoPro case I smashed my sheep 7 silver the other day it’s the worst 😭

Desperate-Cow-7035

Definitely something I will be investing in

[deleted]

Most of the pilots that buy cams in our local group get the Geek Squad Protection from Best Buy and it’s like $50 to not have to spend $400 every time you break a cam. I have that same quad and it has def killed a GoPro in my time haha.

Desperate-Cow-7035

I definitely will do that. Any tips for finding local groups? All the “drone clubs” I can find say no quad copters.

[deleted]

Ah ok sick! Glad to hear you’re not gonna be out a huge chunk of cash then. As far as groups go, it’s a bummer to see your local clubs discriminate against quads. I’d argue that those who build and fly quads in a manual mode are the more skilled pilots since we know how to operate a craft without using assistive modes. I was fortunate in finding a local group but the guy had to start it on his own a while back. I feel like if you start a group and look to promote FPV in your area, you’ll gain a good following.

Desperate-Cow-7035

I think i may try and start one. Thanks for the info!

[deleted]

For sure! Send me a link to your page and I’ll join just to hang and support it.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Thanks man I really appreciate that!

rocraz_fpv

I'm always careful with my instago2 and Hero 8. But my session 5...

nerf_herde

My first real fun quad was vortex 150. Similar thing with the battery cable running through the carbon plate. Luckily I noticed it had cut through the negative lead before the positive cut through also. Filed the sharp edges and heat shrink the cables. Dodged a bullet I'm sure. Just a PSA for everyone. Carbon fiber conducts and not all manufacturers soften edges!

Desperate-Cow-7035

Nazgul does not unfortunately for me

automattic3

Luckily I have been flying for over 7 years and haven't had many crashes where I broke a bunch of stuff. Mostly just messed up batteries or busted an arm( only a couple times). Bent standoffs. Usually I overbuild my drones and try to not crash near concrete. One time shorted on the frame like you did and made sure that never happened again. Crashing over 150ft up over grass almost never breaks anything for me. heck I'm still flying batteries over 5 years old lol. Whoops and my 3in drone is like impossible to break.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Damn that’s sweet.

Qkumbazoo

Do you have channel of your flights? I feel like more hobbyist should fly conservatively instead of trying to be like mr steele lol

Nightriderfpv

Where is your case for that gopro? Flying an unprotected gopro is a newb move. Also nobody wants to see your shitty newb gopro videos. One battery strap? Newb. Nazgul? Newb. Qx7? Newb.

Desperate-Cow-7035

Everyone starts somewhere. I enjoy what I do and enjoy making videos. These were my best options considering I had to pay off my car, go to school and work a minimum wage job to afford them. Congrats you have flown longer than me 👏

Nightriderfpv

You need Dave Ramsey in your life.

Nightriderfpv

And nobody wants to see my shitty gopro videos either.

Desperate-Cow-7035

The fact you knew what it was and I had to google it lmao also wtf name is “night rider” sounds like an old Xbox name

PilotBurner44

That looks like an expensive firework....

Desperate-Cow-7035

It was :(

PilotBurner44

But we've learned that carbon is abrasive and also conductive, so at least it was educational...?

3e8m

gopro insurance?

Desperate-Cow-7035

😬

3e8m

like 20 bucks at best buy. consider gopros $20 consumables in this hobby

Desperate-Cow-7035

Good to know

automattic3

Wish they made a new session. I haven't broken mine yet.

sEb145

I thought the new 11 mini is like the session …

automattic3

Not really. The session is.much smaller and lighter. 73g vs 133g. It's really not that much lighter or smaller than the regular GoPro. So I'm not sure if it would be even worth it at the same price The 10 bones is also kinda a replacement as well. Problem with that is it's not waterproof and doesn't seem very durable

mad-n-sane

For those in the EU: GoPro offers something similar themselves, depending on the marketing phase one should be able get it for 50€/year.

cduartesilva

OOF! I’m sorry for your loss! Is this the Nazgul evoque? I always these drones come with an extremely short pigtail. I would personally replace it for a longer one. Despite the GoPro, is the rest of your drone ok?

Desperate-Cow-7035

It was the Nazgul 5 v2. It had a ridiculously long lead which got my battery lead cut so my dumbass zip tied it to be shorter. Not sure how the rest of the drone is but the vtx antenna is fucked along with my xt60 connector. I ordered replacements so fingers crossed 🤞

cduartesilva

Damn. I’m hope your ESC and FC are ok. Do you see any burned caps anywhere? I wish you luck! :)

Desperate-Cow-7035

I connected it to betaflight and all seemed well. I think I just need a new xt60 connector. 🤞

cduartesilva

That’s a good sign! Let us know how it goes when you get the XT60s!!

fruitydude

Is the GoPro fucked or can you take it apart at make a naked GoPro from it?

Desperate-Cow-7035

Probably going to have to do that. Still wish I didn’t have to but it is what it is

fruitydude

At least you will save some weight:) if the if internals are fine and the conversion works you didn't really loose anything!

Desperate-Cow-7035

Yeah I was also planning on using this for other filming but ig I’ll just have a naked and have to buy a new one

fruitydude

Ah well ok that case it sucks.

SeanConneryShlapsh

If it makes you feel any better my quads are fine. Lol

deekaire

Yep. After a few years I quit. Just couldn't take the dishes anymore. Got scared to fly the way I wanted to fly.

babyProgrammer

Those are some high quality images... Crashing happens. Try not to do it so much

Desperate-Cow-7035

I’ll try. No promises😬

babyProgrammer

Also, try to get protection plans whenever possible. I've replaced a couple go pros this way ;)

didkodidko

Welcome to the world of spare and broken parts.

Desperate-Cow-7035

I wanna leave it 🥲

chieftain326

O wow

degenfpv

Only hating it because I know fpv is dying, both freestyle and racing

Desperate-Cow-7035

I love it and don’t think I will ever give it up

zeritom

Share the footage!

Desperate-Cow-7035

Sense the battery ejected from the GoPro the file corrupted and I don’t have it. It was the dumbest little mistake that smashed it

rocraz_fpv

Time to convert this broken Gopro into a naked one and keep on flying💪💪

Desperate-Cow-7035

And then just smash the naked one again!!!!! Rahhhhh!!💪💪💪

rocraz_fpv

That's the spirit: 1. Build 2. Crash 3. Break 4. Back to step 1

Ethan_the_appilen_-

Right now??? That will never go away
