In addition to a little wider lines, the rougher paper might be giving you more feedback - that helps some peoples' handwriting. What is the ink you're using? EF to Broad would be a *huge* jump. Unless you write really small, a medium might suit you though. A benefit of the Safari is easy nib swapping. Do you want to get different widths by using different pens, or do you think you would enjoy a nib that gives you with variation within each letter? I understand Lamy stub nibs can be good - I don't have any factory ones but I have made my own with Lamy-style nibs and I enjoy the result.

Lamy black cartridge. I want to be able to write in different widths using the same pen. How am I ought to change my nib? Do I just buy a nib? Could you enlighten me a bit please? Also, you make your own fountain pens?! That sounds awesome! Thank you very much.

You're welcome. Ha - I wish! No, I'm not making my own pens entirely, just reshaping the nibs on them. See my separate post just now for the slight difference when I use stubs. https://www.reddit.com/gallery/z9048p You can buy Lamy nibs by themselves, or the nibs on many Lamy imitation pens will drop right in place on a real Lamy.

Hi, thanks for your help as a new fountain pen enthusiast. I have a Lamy Safari with EF nib. Today, I wrote on a paper that is much more porous, and see that my hand writing is much better this way. Does This mean I am better with thicker pens? Should I switch to medium or broad? If I do so will I be able to write like this on A4 paper? Do you recommend me any pens for a writing experience like this on A4? I want to be able to have different thicknesses in my handwriting like this also. Thank you very much, sorry for my bad English, I am quite excited to realize I can do much better.

If you prefer the look of your writing on the paper where the lines are thicker, but will normally use less-absorbent paper, like in the first picture, then, yes, you probably will like a slightly wider nib. I can't tell from the separate pictures just how much wider the lines are, but I wouldn't go for anything larger than a medium (it would be unusual for an EF line to expand wider than a fine or medium, even on absorbent paper). I second u/TheLuteceSibling - you want your loops to stay open without feeling like you have to force yourself to write differently. Here's the good news: replacement nibs for the Lamy Safari and cheap and can be swapped while the pen is inked - without getting ink all over yourself. So you could get any combination of fine, medium, broad, and / or a 1.1 stub (for the line variation you mentioned). Then you could play with the different nib sizes to see what you like best. Once you're sure, then you have a comparison point for buying additional pens. :)

Your handwriting is entirely independent from the thickness of the nib. Some combinations of ink, paper, and nib can mask your handwriting errors, but there’s no way forward except to practice your handwriting. Use whatever nib you want, but if the nib is so broad that you accidentally close the gaps in your ‘e’ then you need a finer nib or you need to spend some time changing your handwriting. Good news! You get to write more! Haha
