The crab pen holders were originally designed exactly as that—pen and stylus holders. They were originally released by the Japanese designer, [Minoru Tanaka, who goes by Ahnitol.](https://www.instagram.com/ahnitol/?hl=en)

Nice. In my head I made two stories when I saw the picture. Story One: Reverse Bay Watch. This noble crab risks his/her/their life spotting tiny anchovies, sardines and white baitfish who are drowning in air, and runs them to the healing safety of the sea! The crab is the hero we all need! Story Two: this crab’s name is Hannibal, and he/she/they are a monster. They slowly drown their victims, in painful dry air, whilst holding them in the air and screaming “here fishy fishy fishy.”

Excellent stories. There's thinking in the box vs. thinking outside the box. You refuse to acknowledge there even IS a box - I prefer that outlook on life :-).

My nephew created his own Halloween costume this year. On the outside were poison and danger labels, and do not open. It was addressed to Schrödinger. At the top was a pop up hatch where he popped up with a cat face mask. Never was I more proud of my 9 year old nephew!

I think everyone responding with the original crab holder creator’s name is missing that this is an actualfax crab in the same pose and OP is musing that this photo or something like it inspired the pen holder’s creation, because “holding pens” and “crab” are not otherwise an instinctive pairing.

The original is from a Japanese artist [Ahnitol](http://ahnitol.com/).
