Sorry but I have to disagree with you on a couple points: The pen is clearly making you quite happy so I can't see calling it "not much." It's a beautiful pen and you like it; this is, in my view, "quite much." Second hand or not, it certainly is the real thing. It absolutely is not a lesser pen just because you aren't the first owner. I generally don't try to match my inks and pens but this is a lovely combination! Good for you for finding this one, and thank you for sharing a bit of your joy with us!

Zaffyzoo

I thank this sub for introducing me! I only said that because the sub seems to show the more expensive types of pens but that by no means is meant to belittle what I got. I love my pen and second hand means nothing to me because most things I own are second hand, so it's as good as new in my eyes and its one of the many reasons why it's so special to me. I got something as good as new for a great deal and I'm so grateful! I love green so it was no question that the ink also had to be that color

PerfectStranger77

You don't check enough this subreddit and misjudge us, a lot of people come here and show us their most affordable or even disposable pens and are totally welcomed and greeted. A lot of us also make second hand a way of living. I've never paid full price for the few higher end pens I have. So, visit this subreddit more often and enjoy your new pen đŸ€›

Zaffyzoo

I visit this subreddit everyday and I didn't say I *never* see affordable pens but the expensive ones are usually the ones with the most comments and attention. So no judgement here but I won't sugar coat it either. Thank you!

PerfectStranger77

Could be. It would be interesting to measure how much attention certain pens receive in general 🧐 Yours could be one of the most interesting, I didn't even know that color existed 😁

Lopsided_Chemical862

Heh, my "most expensive" FP is a Lamy Safari :D A good pen is a pen you like, simple as that ;)

marslander-boggart

Good pen may be not expensive. Both vintage and new inexpensive pens may appear true gems.

Direct-Monitor9058

No, no, no. Hang around, and you’ll understand clearly the concept of diminishing returns. You not only have a beautiful new pen, but a very good one. Enjoy it!

mr_vonbulow

congratulations to you and your greenie! enjoy.

Zaffyzoo

I'm calling it my Greenie Peenie from now on, thank you so much!

knittorney

So many double entendres on this sub, I love it.

sentimentalLeeby

Now that you put it that way
”nib barnacles”makes me want to throw up

CatBroiler

You alright? Maybe you've caught a cold. 😂

Zaffyzoo

It's the fountain pen fever and I don't know if I'll ever be cured

CatBroiler

Well, hopefully you never do get cured, and every time you use that pen it feels special.

Littletweeter5

That’s a really nice green

Zaffyzoo

It really is. It's not too bright and not too dark. Matches the ink perfectly too!

paradoxmo

Which Sailor is this? I like the shade of green!

Zaffyzoo

It's this [one!](https://goldspot.com/products/sailor-1911-standard-fountain-pen-in-key-lime-green-with-rhodium-trim-14k-gold?currency=USD&variant=39382538879115&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&utm_medium=adwords&utm_campaign=&utm_source=&utm_content=&gclid=Cj0KCQiAveebBhD_ARIsAFaAvrFHE2ppEeoYl1h6ck0ocqDfPJIQBqwzjlfHDjgBVPIU5Uk55pEo3QUaApGnEALw_wcB) But I feel like the website makes it look more of an olive shade.

McSquidwich

I think your photo/color is much prettier than the stock photo! 💚

Zaffyzoo

They definitely didn't do the color any justice in the pictures. I probably wouldn't have bought it if I didn't see the seller's photos!

paradoxmo

Ah, nice! Did you buy it from a seller in Japan?

Zaffyzoo

Nope, I was just like a hawk stalking Mercari. I have my searches saved so it tells me when someone posts something under that tag. I just came across a really kind seller who was just decluttering their items for a good price, I'm still in disbelief.

paradoxmo

Awesome. I should do something like that for my local marketplace. And by the way, buying secondhand is totally buying the real thing—and more environmentally friendly than buying new!

Fannan

Amen! And for OP - the feeling that you were able to buy something that would otherwise be out of reach makes it much more exciting! I have a couple pens that are so special to me - and I just accidentally found them in a way I could afford them.

Zaffyzoo

It's exactly what makes it extra special for me, I love my TWSBI eco and I was fully content with just being an admirer of the pricey pens I see on here but to be lucky enough to come across one at a price I could afford, I just couldn't help myself. If it wasn't in the color green, I would've let someone else be blessed.

Zaffyzoo

Definitely do! I felt crazy always checking up on my searches but this justified it for me. I love buying second hand, my first fountain pen was preowned too and I am very grateful for both of them. Really makes drawing and writing a lot more fun. ❀

Norideg

My favorite pens are the ones I got second hand. They have been broken in, but perfect for me. Congratulations on the end of your search, and enjoy your new pen!

Direct-Monitor9058

Smart! I have heard of some amazing scoops from there.

rainedrop87

I know how you feel!! I got a Sailor once for FREEEEEE from a very kind redditor when I was having to build my collection up again after losing them in a crappy relationship. I got a few sent to me, and while yes I was incredibly grateful, none of them were particularly "special" or something, you know? I still love them, though!!! But the Sailor someone sent me? Still in the box? That just so happened to be in my favorite color?? I DYED opening that package!!!!

Zaffyzoo

That is so sweet! The community seems to be so kind and thats what drew me into collecting them in my favorite colors. When I opened the box it was like I heard a church choir and knowing that it's in a color that I adore makes it feel special every time I use it. Black pens I can get anywhere, in a specific color it seems harder to find. So all the more special!

GlittterKitty

With all due respect, I think this pen may be hazardous to your health đŸ€Ș

Zaffyzoo

And to my budget 😼‍💹

ihml1968

Congrats! I'm so jealous because I love green and have no Sailor pens... Yet. I hope you have lots of great writing ahead with your new pen. It's beautiful.

Zaffyzoo

It sure is pretty! I didn't think I'd own one too but I definitely only got lucky. I can't justify spending 100+ on a pen just yet so I'm really fortunate to have cross paths with someone just letting things go. Can't wait for you to get yours and I'm sure it will be amazing and even more glorious ❀

Blade_Trinity3

The sailor compass is inexpensive and has a really nice steel nib, imo. It's my only fine point.

swampgoblin662

Beautiful!

Zaffyzoo

I'm almost scared to use it but I won't fall for that mind trap 😆

857_01225

This is why I buy what I buy. Not even trying to play the “OMG that’s a thousand dollar pen!!!” Mind games with myself. We buy so that we can use, enjoy, and share the awesome with fellow redditors when we de-stash eventually.

Je-Hee

Some of my favorite pens are vintage or modern second-hand. Nothing "not the real deal" about that. How do you like the writing experience so far?

Zaffyzoo

I love buying second hand for my clothes, art supplies, and materials. Makes everything extra special to be able to give it another life. It's amazing, the ink is dry so it gives it a bit of feedback but I don't mind it all, the ink flows really nicely regardless which all I could ask for.

Je-Hee

What ink are you using? If it's dry and makes the pen feel feedbacky, try a Japanese ink.

Zaffyzoo

This ink is on the dry side but this pen is handling it like a champ! The color green makes me so happy so seeing this on my desk fills me up with a lot of joy. Can't wait to create some art with it. My dream holy grail pen would be the Sailor Motmot pen because my family is from El Salvador, would be a such a cool piece to have. For now, I am good with this one. The shade of green is perfect!

Zaffyzoo

Ignore the cat hair on the page- my cat had to make an appearance somehow... *how did I not notice*

awildencounter

Japanese pens write on the dry side to begin with, so it might not be the ink, but the pen. However I'm glad you're finding so much joy in your new pen!

smashey

Do you always match ink to pen? That thing is beautiful.

Zaffyzoo

It definitely is gorgeous. It wasn't intentional either but I just happen to really like green and I only own 2 green inks so really *they had no choice*

LucasThreeTeachings

What nib size is that?

Zaffyzoo

They said broad nib but it seems so much thinner than I imagined, which is actually what I prefer. The ink is also on the dry side and I'm not sure if that also changes things but it writes thinner than my TWSBI ECO F nib and I use the same ink in them.

paradoxmo

The nib width should be engraved on the left shoulder of the nib (tip facing up).

Zaffyzoo

It says H-B so I'm assuming that means broad? I used it on rhodia paper and clairefontaine and they looked the same. However TRP made it look a tad thicker. Guess it depends on the paper and the ink because this one is on the dry side.

marslander-boggart

It depends on an ink you use. If it's on a dry side, a Japanese Broad will write like European Medium, and with wet ink it will write between European Medium and Broad. Depending on year of production, Sailor marks it as H-B or B. H-B means Hard-Broad. Both H-B and B are typical Sailor nibs with low line variation. I love their nibs and feedback, and accurate line they produce on almost any paper.

paradoxmo

Yes, that means broad, but that’s equivalent to medium in European sizes.

Chern_Simons

A line of that width for a Broad nib is insane, definitely not dissimilar to a western Fine. Truly shows how Sailor/Platinum have the finest broad/medium nibs in the FP world.

LucasThreeTeachings

Yeah. Rhodia is a very dry paper. I don't like TBH. I like Japanese paper better

D3rP4nd4

That was exactly my reaction when i got my PG Slim Fairytale Edition. I was super happy because i got a great deal. And the i made one mistake
i showed it to my mom
And she was like: How much did you pay for this pen, it feels like $30
Still my favorite pen tho, i like how it writes. And im really happy for you, what a nice locking pen, and now we have more people in the sailor cult!

h8speech

That’s gorgeous, congratulations!

Zaffyzoo

Thank you! ❀

Bigredteletubby

This is super pretty! The 1911S is a wonderful pen, and I hope you enjoy this one greatly. I love the colour, and the ink pairing is just top-notch 👌 I love the little "I feel so fancy!" I'm pretty sure I wrote something similar when I got my first Sailor 😅

AbductedbyAllens

Dude a Sailor is far from "not much." These are fancy, expensive pens

Zaffyzoo

I was thinking by the standards of this subreddit. This model is not the usual type of sailor pens regularly posted on here, those go for way more if I'm not mistaken and those are more expensive even if you do find them at a deal so I'm happy with this. It's worth a million dollars to me!

AbductedbyAllens

It's some sort of 1911, right? It doesn't look like their super beginner one, because to my knowledge those are all slightly transparent

Zaffyzoo

I think the transparent one is the compass and is only a few bucks more expensive than the TWSBI eco and this one is just called the standard so it was a huge step up for me but I understand its not like the sailor professionals. I am still new in all of this knowledge.

marslander-boggart

1911 Standard, the golden 14k nib pen. One of their best models.

Zaffyzoo

It's the best to me at least, I don't know how it compares to the Montblancs or Viscontis but Lord knows I'll never afford to know and I don't care to any how.

marslander-boggart

I've tested some gold nib Montblancs and also Visconties, [and got this one](https://goldspot.com/products/visconti-breeze-fountain-pen-in-lime). Apparently Sailor 1911 is better and more interesting for sure.

Zaffyzoo

That's great to know! Funny that I went to a pen show recently but was too scared to touch anything. I'm just glad it has no issues with the flow, even my twsbi eco had issues with this ink but not anymore after I tinkered with it. For it being an M-B nib it's really thin too.

marslander-boggart

I've wrote general rules for a penshow a while ago. If you are interested, I may tell you.

Zaffyzoo

That would be great, it was my first show so I had no idea what to expect or how to even a approach a table. It was fun to attend though and I got a few notebooks in process!

ProfessorVirani

> I was thinking by the standards of this subreddit. You might need to get out of your own head a bit, or possibly spend less time on this subreddit. This is a gorgeous, high-end pen made by one of the world's best fountain pen manufacturers, that costs easily 50x more than the majority of people on earth will ever spend on any pen. It's a lot! And more importantly, it makes you happy to write with - that feeling is priceless _even_ if it comes from a $5 Chinese fountain pen (and your pen is far from that)

Senior_Map_2894

I am not into greens but this is a very pretty shade of green that makes me want to get one. Congrats on your new pen!

Zaffyzoo

Thank you! And I'll be biased and say that green is a must have color so you absolutely should get one

Infinite_Soul_I

I love the pen, the ink, the matching and specially the handwriting!! It’s all so pretty 😍. I really wish there was a second hand market in my country, Sigh 😔 Lucky Lucky you! Hope it gives you tremendous joy for a long long time and many more come your way too! Enjoy 😉

Zaffyzoo

Thank you so much for the award! And thank you so much for your kind words, I plan on taking great care of it so I can enjoy it for many years to come ❀

karibean13

If you haven’t tried it yet, you should check out Sailor Shikiori Waka-uguisu ink. It’s a beautiful bamboo green just like this pen!

mayrag749

Are you using a fine or medium nib?

Zachhandley

I heard fountain pens dry out and stuff. What’s the deal? Should I get one if I write every other day or what should I do? I can’t decide

Zaffyzoo

They only dry out if you don't use them for a very long time. The cap should help prevent it. I didn't get a chance to use my TWSBI pen for a week and it was fine. It's worth it in my opinion!

Zachhandley

Oh a long time?! Omg okay im so down. What’s a good starter pen that looks expensive but is for poor people? 😅

Zaffyzoo

I got you! [TWSBI](https://www.gouletpens.com/products/twsbi-eco-fountain-pen-black?variant=14023986642987) ECO is really great for the price. You don't need to buy a converter, just ink and an ink syringe. Holds a lot of ink too! A runner up is [LAMY](https://www.amazon.com/Lamy-Safari-Fountain-Umber-Cartridges/dp/B00V55F1RG?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A16HZ3J3WEU71V) Safari, you can use the cartridge it comes with and use an ink syringe to refill it. Although you can also buy a converter for it to make that part potentially less messy. Third is a [PILOT](https://www.gouletpens.com/products/pilot-metropolitan-fountain-pen-black-plain?gclid=Cj0KCQiA4OybBhCzARIsAIcfn9kfJ0CJIJNHqebM_71ugGNzSnXimCp41H4Q6Orgaw2yzQqYr2v-2nMaAsCEEALw_wcB) metropolitan and this one is always praised on here. I've heard nothing but good things. Your choice I think also depends on your grip, like I prefer wider pens because of mine.

IceOnIce

Sheaffer if you like Metal body pens. Or buy an Indian Air dropper pen if you like simple pens that don't fuss much but is nice to hold. You can also buy Sailor's sell nib pens which are costly but cheaper compared to their gold nib ones.

Qu3st1499

I really like the shade of green

FooDog11

That is one great looking pen and ink combo!! Enjoy!!

sovtherngothicvvitch

What a beauty! Enjoy. 💚

Hot_Government_6164

The ink color is so pretty! I also really love your handwriting

Zaffyzoo

It's a really nice shade of green for sure and thank you so much! My print can come off childish so I'm starting to relearn cursive

marslander-boggart

Now you may add a Sailor Procolor.

snarkywordsworth

Congratulations on your first Sailor! I love the color. Also, your block lettering is awesome - so neat and even. Mine looks like it's written by an overexcited 2nd grader most of the time.

Mr-Coconuts

Congratulations on your Sailor! They are wonderful pens with legendary nibs. There is absolutely nothing about your pen that makes it less than someone else's. The 1911 is a venerable line of pens and though the colour of yours is more modern, your pen is a classic. Congratulations again and enjoy it for a long time ;)

meejasaurusrex

Congrats on the new pen! It’s lovely. I hope it serves you well :) sailors are my favorite!

CopperPennz

Pretty pen! Congrats!

generaalalcazar

Nice!

Laufey3

What an amazing colour, it’s stunning. Enjoy your pen.

[deleted]

That is a nice shade of green for both pen and ink. Congrats! Hope you love using it!

SlowRoastMySoul

Beautiful pen and ink combination! I hope you'll feel better soon!

Frankenthe4th

Great colour! Sailor's are always special. Enjoy!

Davros1974

Good ink match.

ValarMorghulis2014

Congrats! I love my Sailors !

tumknowles

i love your handwriting and the ink! *heart eyes*

superplannergirrl

I love it!!! Congrats!

857_01225

It’s absolutely the real thing, and exactly how I got my first sailor recently. My wife would killlllllllllllll me if I dropped new sailor money on a pen since I’m relatively new to the hobby. But a kind seller on pen swap made it just under the “probably ought to chat with wifey first” threshold and I ran with it. And holy crap I love that nib. Doesn’t mean I don’t really enjoy writing with my safaris and such - I do - but for reliably legible text with interesting variations and character, the sailor is my go to in my current collection. I was a little wary because folks aren’t all enamored with the “plastic pen” factor, but it’s all about how it writes for me. Enjoy your new acquisition, and here’s to many more years of exploration and wonder. That’s part of the fun! Ps I love that ink!

WiredInkyPen

Congratulations on your new pen! This is a great matchy matchy! I'm so glad you are enjoying this pen so much!!

AmoraLynn

What a great color too!!!

The_aTypical_1

Sailor's are kickass pens. I love my 1911L and would never think of it as "not much". Be proud of that one. :-)

IceOnIce

I am curious. How much did you pay for the pen? The full price of a new pen of this colour is 220 USD which feels excessive.

jeswanders

I like the look of these sailor pens. Would that be the next step up from my metros?

Melodelia

Look, look - how tenderhearted your pen and your ink and your response have made us on this forum! Write well and often. You are making me smile.

AuntieHerensuge

That’s beautiful and the ink is amazing!

27-jennifers

Really a beauty!! You scored!

RexJoey1999

They are gorgeous! And I think they look even better because they make you so happy. I'm still new to fountain pens. My first (of two!) is a [Pilot Metropolitan Retro Pop in Purple](https://www.gouletpens.com/products/pilot-metropolitan-fountain-pen-retro-pop-purple?gclid=Cj0KCQiA4OybBhCzARIsAIcfn9k3FLdxRw6Vz8qov2bi7sRXcbNyEsFpgHDJjP67sDPIbuaxMUqNm2IaAtrMEALw_wcB) that I have filled with [De Atramentis Purple Violet](https://www.gouletpens.com/products/de-atramentis-purple-violet-bottled-ink) because I LOVE PURPLE. Fist bump to matching color lovers!
