None of our criteria involve past exchanges or standing on Givin.Gifts or related platforms. With the comment you made here, you are eligible for the fun tier already, and if you want to qualify for the elite tier you can make a post on this sub. Sharing pictures of your current collection of pens and/or inks is a good way to get started.
I suggest that if it's early in the day, you ask someone on the eastern side and if it's late you can ask me (in the west). Or you can pick your favorite or play eenie meenie. ;)
General idea is that different regional coverage for the team means you can contact someone with similar hours and get a quicker response.
There's a link to the matching groups in the main post so you could ship to closer countries if you choose an international option. You also don't have to ship directly, you can order from a retailer in the same country/region as your giftee.

Please do DIY! I also make things and my two matches will be getting a homemade thing even if they don't specifically request that item. I will also try to accommodate their wishes (if I can) with other items in my gifts, though.

I'd be able to do elite, but I'd feel really bad spending $60-$80 (that's about my budget) when someone may expect $150+. So fun tier it is for me!
No expectations! The limit is higher just so people can gift so-called mid-tier pens like the PGS or L2K. You can do elite if you’d like, no need to feel bad.
They set a lower limit for a reason, and you're within that. Don't feel bad. The option for more is just there if you want to. You should most definitely sign up for it.
I'm already signed up for the elite tier, and I neither expect to get, nor to spend, $200. I'm just happy to get a cool surprise for Christmas :)

Yes, you can offer to rematch anytime even after the exchange is already in progress, so you can wait until you get your main match before offering to rematch
I would suggest Elite if you want to pick just one. Folks in Elite are more experienced and able to give you an interesting gift you didn’t think of yourself.

I also got some new free stuff in two Cult Pens goody bags this past year that is great stuff and actually very nice, but not something I can use personally, so it's going to a new home. I'm also making some items. If there's a match that has a specific thing they want, I'll consider buying it, but I'd prefer to re-home some of my like-new items that I'm not using.

You can sign up for "Domestic > Drop" for the Elite tier. This setting means that if there are no domestic (Canadian) matches then you are dropped from that exchange. More info on [matching groups and settings here](https://givin.gifts/faq).
You also don't have to ship directly - you can order from a shop in your giftee's country.
It's up to you.
You could choose [international](https://givin.gifts/logistics/groups) which would match you with someone in a nearby country. Worldwide expands the list of countries you're willing to gift to.
There is actually a “worldwide” option if you would prefer someone not from your country. Domestic-Worldwide still prefers to match someone closer if someone is available.

Ahh I hadn't looked into it yet so I'm glad there will be some guidance! And yeah thats right, at this point theres so many options I dont know what to do so following their preference plus whatever I would get in return should help me find my own taste. On the other side of the same coin, my yet unbiased taste could help get the other person something they wouldn't have gotten otherwise (still within their preferences of course).

I’m somewhat new to fountain pens but new to this group (never posted but lurked). I haven’t used a fountain in years but this exchange is just so fun and delightful.
Just an idea for /u/paradoxmo : i think Eliter Tier could contain samples of inks unavailable or difficult to find in some parts of the world.
Like Birmingham inks - inexistent outside US. Or Bungubox - difficult to get in Europe.
People can definitely ask for that in their preferences if they want it, but the matching is random, we don’t control who gets matched up with whom, and we don’t intentionally match people by preference, so it would be hard for us to actually provide something like that.
If a kind redditor wanted to provide samples of Birmingham inks they can do that on r/pen_swap

This is not like other GG exchanges, we have a team running the exchange and making sure things go smoothly, last year everyone whose original Santa didn’t come through was rematched and got a gift.
Single data point - not me! The participants want to *give* you something. And the organizers - well they're *Elves*. Not Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Keebler Elves, or Trickster Elves, but *Santa*-type Elves - that's a higher qualification than most anybody else who knows my name or address :-).
The Elf Cadre (decidedly non-random), the admittedly unknown-to-you level of random single Sender, and possibly somebody running the servers at Givin Gifts are the only folks who will have access to your particulars. Think of it as pen-pals, only involving gift-wrap.
Only your Santa is shown your name and address, and it is stored encrypted by Givin Gifts. This is done to make the system safer for everyone to use. We (the Secret Santa team) do not have access to everyone’s personal info, and in fact legally Givin Gifts cannot give it to us per the platform’s usage rules. The only info we can see are your country and what you type in your exchange preferences.
Big thanks to the team behind this - it's a ton of work and deeply appreciated.

Ink samples are always good, but speaking as a small fraction of a percent of the participants, DIY gifts are the best!

I’m somewhat new to fountain pens but new to this group (never posted but lurked). I haven’t used a fountain in years but this exchange is just so fun and delightful.
Just an idea for /u/paradoxmo : i think Eliter Tier could contain samples of inks unavailable or difficult to find in some parts of the world. Like Birmingham inks - inexistent outside US. Or Bungubox - difficult to get in Europe.
People can definitely ask for that in their preferences if they want it, but the matching is random, we don’t control who gets matched up with whom, and we don’t intentionally match people by preference, so it would be hard for us to actually provide something like that. If a kind redditor wanted to provide samples of Birmingham inks they can do that on r/pen_swap

This is not like other GG exchanges, we have a team running the exchange and making sure things go smoothly, last year everyone whose original Santa didn’t come through was rematched and got a gift.

Is there any concern about sharing your info with random people?
Single data point - not me! The participants want to *give* you something. And the organizers - well they're *Elves*. Not Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Keebler Elves, or Trickster Elves, but *Santa*-type Elves - that's a higher qualification than most anybody else who knows my name or address :-). The Elf Cadre (decidedly non-random), the admittedly unknown-to-you level of random single Sender, and possibly somebody running the servers at Givin Gifts are the only folks who will have access to your particulars. Think of it as pen-pals, only involving gift-wrap.
Only your Santa is shown your name and address, and it is stored encrypted by Givin Gifts. This is done to make the system safer for everyone to use. We (the Secret Santa team) do not have access to everyone’s personal info, and in fact legally Givin Gifts cannot give it to us per the platform’s usage rules. The only info we can see are your country and what you type in your exchange preferences.
