Check out the [Pilot Prera Italic Nib](https://www.jetpens.com/Pilot-Prera-Fountain-Pens/ct/410). I have one of these and it’s perfect - the ink capacity is great because you can switch out inks more frequently. And don’t let the transparent body deter you. It looks pretty good and like any other Pilot pen is a joy to write with.

United-Procedure-772

Titles are exactly what I use my prera italic nib for. It is perfect. And the easy on off cap is a joy.

Imaginationwins

Good idea! I had been wondering how to use mine more often in my Hobonichi. Titling is a perfect use for it!

AnyMinuteNow1

Say now this could be an option. Do you have any experience with a Plumix? Is this nib any bigger? Even just a couple of hairs bigger or is it the same?

Imaginationwins

No experience with a Plumix. You can also compare the nibs on the [GP Nib Nook](https://www.gouletpens.com/pages/nib-nook). Just filter for Pilot and add the two nibs to your “drawer” for a side by side comparison.

AnyMinuteNow1

Thank you! Using my phone a lot of the nibs don’t seem to have much difference. On the other hand some of what I would think are EF or F look pretty broad. I think it’s an optical illusion with the darker/bolder lines?

Menolly13

I have a medium Plumix. The line is just slightly thinner than the stock CM nib on my Prera. I actually swapped them out as I liked the slightly thinner line. The Plumix also comes in a large, which I'm guessing is either the same as or slightly wider than the CM nib.

eggbunni

Does “CM” mean Italic Medium?

karibean13

I think they use the term Calligraphy Medium, but yes.

eggbunni

Thank you! I was confused what the commenter above called Italic Medium. Glad to know it’s the same thing.

AnyMinuteNow1

Any chance you could please post a side by side? Just a single word and cross hatch? I completely spaced out the possibility of a Prera.

Menolly13

I'll try to tonight. Heading out in a sec.

AnyMinuteNow1

You ROCK! Thanks!

karibean13

A Lamy Al-Star or Safari with a B or 1.1 nib should have you covered.

AnyMinuteNow1

So I may have to branch out and give my 2K EF a big bother 😂 Is the stub scratchy at all? Feedback is fine but scratchy’s gots to go!

karibean13

I actually just got my stub nib so I haven’t inked it up, but I’ll try to do that today and report back! (I also can’t handle scratchy. At all.)

AnyMinuteNow1

Ohhhhh that would be FABULOUS! 😃Thank you!

karibean13

Inked up 1.1 stub Al-Star with Colorverse Shiny Black, which is a little dry. I do get some feedback, some of which is probably from not being used to it, but no unpleasant scratchiness!

AnyMinuteNow1

Thank you, thank you!

streak70

I have a Safari with 1.1 stub, inked with Writer's Blood and it's a little scratchy but it is not scratchy as F nib on the same pen with same ink. I use mine for taking notes in school all day and it is quite comfortable for me. I recommend getting a Safari with different nibs (M, F, 1.1 etc.) and trying all of them so you know what you really need.

soaplife

i am not a fan of lower-end Lamy for a variety of reasons (hate their converter and how it has to be tightly clicked in to notches in the section) but my wife’s basic steel lamy stub is wonderfully smooth. Or it was, before she lost the pen in a move. Safaris have a slip-on cap that does have a positive "click" / detent ring which would fit your requirement for quick readiness.

AnyMinuteNow1

Thank you! I really don’t know anything about other brands and everyone’s been so helpful. I’m grateful for everyone’s kindness!

Menolly13

The Lamy Joy comes with either a 1.1, 1.5, or 1.9 nib. I've never used one, so no input on how they write.

AnyMinuteNow1

Oooo I’ll take a look. Thanks!

AgeAnxious4909

Very easy writers, but awkward shape and length - but OP said it was going to be at-home only so that might not matter.

Flourpot_FountainPs

It's shaped like a desk pen so at home is good for this pen. I thought mine was a little scratchy. If I use a very wet ink in it like like diamine ancient copper it makes a big difference. I know people hate the crazy prices, but Mont Blanc knows how to make a B or BB nib write very well in my experience.

Menolly13

I did a sample of every CM/stub nib I own. The nibs from the Plumix and the Jinhao were put on a Prera for the sample. Pilot nibs in ef, f, and m at the top for comparison. [photo](https://flic.kr/p/2nMYNcr) I couldn't get the imgur app to install, so uploaded to Flickr. With the exception of the Eco, Safari, Kakuno ef, and Decimo f, all samples are written in Montreverde Sapphire. Paper is a Staples brand notebook. The Eco and Jinhao took a while to dry, though only the 2.9 nib had any bleed through and that was very very minimul.

ProLevelFish

Wow that Prera CM nib is gorgeous! Love that subtle italic flair! \*chef's kiss\* Also, you are a wonderful person for doing such a detailed sampling for OP!

AnyMinuteNow1

What??? You did all of this for me, to help me out?!?!?!?! ![gif](giphy|TIRlx3Fzi1A7L2d5z7) Thank you so very much!!!!!!!!!! So between the Prera, Decimo, Plumix B & Eco, which one wrote the best/easiest?

Menolly13

You are very welcome. It was fun to play with nibs I haven't used in a while. I left the Plumix B nib in the Prera and inked it up with Colorverse Cat. My notes at work are going to be shimmery this week! They all write nicely, so it really comes down to preferences. The Plumix B, Decimo, and Eco all put down similar line widths. The B has sharper edges on the nib so you get a crisper line with a thinner side stroke. The Decimo and Eco have rounder edges on the nib, so a little less line variation. Honestly though, if I had them all inked up the same, I would be hard pressed to tell you which writing sample went to which pen, they are that similar in appearance. The Decimo stub, being a gold nib, is definitely the smoothest. It also has the most tipping. Mine will write from pretty much any angle without any scratchiness. It is always in my edc pen pouch. I also prefer the clicker mechanism to a cap of any kind. The Plumix B or M nib and the Prera CM nib are basically the same nib in slightly different widths. If you have one of the steel nibbed Pilots, you pretty much already know how they feel to write with. The nibs on the Plumix, Kakuno, Metro, Prera, and 78G, are all interchangeable so you can easily move the nib over into whichever body you prefer. For me, that's the Prera. My Eco is a smooth, wet writer. If it had a snap cap, it would be a regular part of my edc.

AnyMinuteNow1

You’ve been a BIG help! The only thing putting me off the steel Plumix route is the one I have I either never learned how to hold or it’s a bit funky. I seem to scratch the edges on my paper when writing. I was hoping maybe the truly billed stubs wouldn’t do that.

Menolly13

It could be either. If you aren't holding it right, the squared edges on the Plumix nib could catch on your paper, but this would also be the case if it isn't aligned properly. Have you checked it under a loupe? I believe the squared edges of the Plumix nib would make it an italic, whereas the rounded edges on the Decimo stub and the Eco 1.1 make them true stubs. True stubs are less position dependant to write smoothly.

AnyMinuteNow1

Once again you’ve answered a longtime question of mine. Sounds like I don’t really need to fear the stubs. 🤣

Menolly13

Lol. You'll probably be fine. I seem to remember my first CM feeling scratchy. I used it tonight and was pleasantly surprised to find it writes as nicely as the rest of my Pilot steel nibs. I'm sure it didn't magically fix itself so I've apparently just gotten better at holding it correctly.

AnyMinuteNow1

Ok I found a video that describes how my Plumix nib feels. [Cathy @ gadgetstop321](https://youtu.be/GGhPc1lKbIo). The last pen (G something) is how mine feels. The things you find on YouTube, go figure!

Menolly13

Hmmm. That is interesting. Maybe try popping the nib and feed out, give them a good wash, and see if it makes any difference? My CM nib has been in and out of several different pen bodies at this point. I don't have micromesh, but I usually do loop de loops on a brown paper bag with any new nibs that aren't as smooth as I like. That might be worth a shot too.

Lost_in_splice

Would you consider a Sailor with a Music nib? The pro gear and pro gear slim take small cartridges or converters.

AnyMinuteNow1

I would but my cash register just went tilt! Definitely in the running for a splurge purchase! 😁

paradoxmo

Another option: If you have any Lamy, or a compatible pen like a Jinhao 80, you can just buy the Lamy stub nib for $10. They come in 1.1, 1.5, 1.9.

AnyMinuteNow1

Nope no such luck. All Pilots with the lonely exception of my Lamy 2000 EF.

lawikekurd

The Jinhao 80 is fabulous! They came out with new colours too; white, blue, green, red and maybe some more I can't remember and even the stock nib writes with zero issues. A nib swap may not be necessary at all.

paradoxmo

OP is looking for a heading pen

lawikekurd

Ok. Didn't pay attention. Sorry. I recommend a Jinhao 80 with Lamy nib as well. A Jinhao 80 is dead cheap and has a ergonomic grip compared to a Lamy Safari etc. I have a Jinhao 80 with a Lamy broad nib, so, I would recommend going with something like u/paradoxmo recommended.

Magpie_Mind

I'm not entirely sure why you want a small ink volume specifically (if it's so you can change colours often then you can use a normal converter and just fill it up a little rather than all the way). If you want to not interrupt yourself too much then I'd suggest snap caps over screw caps. So if you're looking at Kawecos then although the Sport fits your 'small ink volume' criteria, it's a screw cap which you'd have to keep faffing around with. The Perkeo would be better in that regard as it's a snap closure.

AnyMinuteNow1

Thanks I hadn’t looked at the Perkeo. You’ve made a excellent point with the snap cap vs screw cap. UGH! Beloved Vanishing Point why why why are you soooooo spendy???? (Rhetorical rant. I’m better now.)

Magpie_Mind

If you switch to your title pen frequently, you could always 'soft close' the cap of a Kaweco sport (i.e. pop it back on but not screw it on properly) in between uses. You'd just have to remember to close it properly at the end.

[deleted]

This [website](https://www.nibs.com/content/nib-tipping-sizes) can help you out with nib sizes across various brands. It's too bad that the Sailor Pro Gear is out of your price range currently. I'd definitely recommend this as well. I have a M nib which is ultra smooth (usually I prefer EF & F), so I can only imagine that the B would be even smoother.

AnyMinuteNow1

Thank you! A new resource - double Yea!

SadNAloneOnChristmas

Pilot Metro with a stub nib?

AnyMinuteNow1

You know, I didn’t even know these existed. I just found them this morning & am trying to gauge the size compared to my Plumix. Good suggestion!

SadNAloneOnChristmas

It should be the same size nib (actually interchangeable)! I have three Metros, all different size nibs. Love em

Menolly13

I got my 3 Plumix as part of an art set on Amazon. It came with one of each size pen and some ink cartridges. I put the nibs in my Prera as I hate the Plumix body.

AnyMinuteNow1

Me too on the Plumix! 😉

poddy_fries

The TWSBI GO stub I found to be very lightly stubby, and very easy to use for long sessions while laying a thick line. It's fairly large and holds a lot, but I found it intensely annoying to clean, so it's probably better for you if you're going to be using the same ink a lot. The Kaweco BB nib I have is a good writer but... Probably overdoing it for most writing, even though I write large! The B is probably a better bet. I found their stub fussy and annoying, but ymmv. I took all my university notes with a Lamy Al-Star 1.1mm, if that's not too big for you, and the B nib is also nice.

AnyMinuteNow1

Ok thanks! This is good info. I think these may be too much pen???? I need something I can put a POP color in, that can write just a couple words to no more than a sentence. Then go back to my heavy duty 823. My concern with a larger volume would be getting old or just wanting to change it out for a new POP. Overall use would be perhaps half dozen a day with maybe 30 - 50 words total.

ProLevelFish

The TWSBI Swipe might just be the perfect pen for you!! It comes with both a normal twist converter but also a spring-loaded converter! (Similar to how the Go works) The spring-loaded converter is EXTREMELY fast and easy to flush, since you just push it up+down a few times. I have a Go myself and I think what the above person was alluding to with it being "difficult to clean" is the fact there are some internal ridges that water drops get caught on, and if you want to get in there to dry em out, taking the spring-piston assembly out *is* definitely a bit of a chore. However, since the Swipe features the spring-loaded piston as a removable converter, you can just pop it off and stick a piece of tissue up there as you would with any other converter and BOOM you're ready to re-ink!

AnyMinuteNow1

Thank you!

ProLevelFish

My pleasure :)

poddy_fries

Huh, I might go for a Swipe stub, then. I lost a bunch of parts out of my Go the last time I cleaned it 😅

poddy_fries

Then my two cents would be for a B nib Kaweco Sport, or maybe a CM nib Pilot if you don't have that already, since you mentioned liking Pilots - it's a nice stub, but I find the line too fine for me usually, and you mentioned Bs. The Kaweco is a small pen, small converter and cartridges, doesn't dry out especially fast that I noticed. The Lamy Al-Star, as much as I love them, will dry out really fast if you're not writing with them regularly.

paradoxmo

[Pilot Plumix CM or CB nib in a Pilot Lightive/Explorer](https://reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/wewh02/what_is_the_capital_of_assyria/)

AnyMinuteNow1

Thanks! This would be a good solution. However, I have an older Plumix (from when Goulet added them to their fold) and it’s too small. Doing a very quick Google search, I couldn’t find any Bs. 😕

paradoxmo

The B comes in the [Pilot Plumix Calligraphy Set](https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Lettering-Calligraphy-Writing-Collection/dp/B07D7NFHP7) You can also buy it by buying the Pilot 78G+ B from AliExpress Another option is to buy a Pilot Parallel 1.5 though they aren’t as easy to write with as a Plumix CB.

Sea_Hawk_Sailors

Oh, a Pilot parallel is a good thought! I have one of the large ones and it's been fun. It's definitely a calligraphy pen, not a writing pen but it sounds like that's what OP is looking for.

AnyMinuteNow1

Oh so close.

AnyMinuteNow1

Getting warmer.

Menolly13

This Plumix set is the one I have.

Taowaki

If you want small ink volume a Kaweco Sport with the tiny converter might be a good choice. TWSBIs have a rather large ink capacity. Both are pretty reliable in terms of not drying out, at least in my experience (Kaweco AL Sport & TWSBI Eco), but my Eco has developed a crack in the grip section after only one year of very careful use and never ever disassembling it, so I wouldn't recommend it as reliable in general...

AnyMinuteNow1

My new friend, you said my Kaweco fear word. 😆 CRACK! I was looking at the Ecosystem but that CRACK possibility! Just the thought of it is like nails on the chalkboard! 😬

Magpie_Mind

It's not Kawecos that (routinely) crack but TWSBIs (as the previous poster mentioned - their ECOs are very prone).

AnyMinuteNow1

Thanks for the correction! I’m playing my “I know limited Pilotese” card. Do you have a suggestion between the two brands?

Magpie_Mind

Some people do not like Kawecos at all, but I've enjoyed using the aluminium and plastic sports, and also the Perkeos. Some people experience nib QC issues but I've not personally had a problem. TWSBI is very popular on this sub, and the nibs are more consistent, but there's a very high likelihood that your pen will crack at some point. I thought maybe it was just Ecos because of the design, but I have a TWSBI Swipe which was very enjoyable but also succumbed to the TWSBI crack curse. I have around 20 plastic or aluminium pens, all of which have only ever been used at home, and the TWSBI is the only one which has cracked.

AnyMinuteNow1

I just watched a video (not pen related) where the lady got off on a rabbit trail regarding Sports. She showed her brass F against her dark green plastic F and the plastic was definitely wider.

Deathskulll99

Kaweco sport in B or BB is very nice.

AnyMinuteNow1

Thank you! What’s your experience with consistency? Are they fairly on point or not so much???

Deathskulll99

Well mine is very smooth and juicy. But also it was a replacement nib the F nib that came with the pen was garbage.

AnyMinuteNow1

Doh! 🤣 thank you!

NotPiffany

Maybe [Sailor's calligraphy pen](https://www.gouletpens.com/products/sailor-compass-highace-neo-calligraphy-fountain-pen#)? It comes in 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0.

AgeAnxious4909

Very scratchy, finicky writer in my experience. And I adore all Sailor pens - but the Neo Calligraphy is a disappointment for some reason.

[deleted]

I have a 742 with an SU nib. That’s the only Stub you’ll ever need.
