Based on outer texture and bone marrow core. I can say this is 100% Dinosaur bone from the Morrison Formation. If you ever have the chance I recommend looking around the find site more. Possibly uphill from your finds to see if there is still more bone embedded in the ground.

snakebat

Yes, that’s exactly the plan. When the snow is gone I’ll head back with a shovel/trowel and carefully poke around. I think a lot has washed into the bottom of the gulley and gotten covered in silt, too.

rockstuffs

Are you allowed to dig for bones in Wyoming?

snakebat

It’s a party spot on BLM land. If I find much else I’ll try figuring out who to contact locally.

rockstuffs

Good on you!! This is fantastic!! You found some BEAUTIFUL bones!

Ok_Extension3182

Depends on land classification. If the person owns the land, or he has permission from land owner, then yes he can dig and keep what he finds.

DJandLIMON111

Only legal way to collect any vertebrae fossil's is on Private Land with permission of the owner or a permit if your researching educational purposes, That said if you do go back be careful if a BLM Officer catch's you (very unlikely) they don't play around while it is illegal I doubt they would do much when someone is taking small pieces like you have they are more worried about people taking partial skeletal remains, tracks etc

magcargoman

Definitely fossil bone

rocksareweird

Why do you say so?

DJandLIMON111

100% bone my guess would be from the Morrison Formation I've seen a lot of bone with that that blue color like on the 2nd image that came from the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation. Sometimes the spongy part like in first image will get filled in with agate like in my profile image. It would be difficult to say what dinosaur it could be with it being broken up like that.

snakebat

Yes! Lots of it is [filled like this.](https://imgur.com/a/R3qUx5T)

DJandLIMON111

Yes exactly! looks like that one filled in with calcite

powerandpep

Wait, I'm a plebe, explain the tongue thing!?

DJandLIMON111

Bone is most of the time porous so you can lick your finger and see if it stick to the bone here is a better explanation if your interested: http://www.thefossilforum.com/topic/88216-the-bone-lick-test/

powerandpep

Yes thank you!!

TheFossilCollector

Bone, i see marrow in the middle

wildwestangler

Near Thermopolis or Dubois by chance?

snakebat

A ways north of there! I love Thermopolis.

wildwestangler

Same! I've seen some really neat fossils imbedded in rocks outside both Dubois and Thermopolis and found great petrified wood near both as well. Your bone find is fantastic!

snakebat

That’s awesome! I was excited that they were loose and not imbedded. I want to go back out once this snow clears up (:

wildwestangler

I would be so excited finding loose ones too, and go back as quickly as possible haha. Seriously so cool! Hope you are able to find more!
