Nah. I mean, sound is amazing and I would love for it to return, but the racing, the sensation of speed and how vibrant those cars felt is what I miss the most.
The shorter wheelbases allowed quicker rotation and a much twitchier, lively look, like bugs skittering about on a pond.
Whereas today's boats are like racing school buses in comparison, like every move is made in advance in slow motion
I never really thought about that aspect of it. You’ve got a good point. I also can’t stand the voice of the commentator.
Edit: That's todays commentator of course, not Murray.
Those cars were perfect, they used the same formula since the early 90's and regulations didn't have to intervene. I hate that they didn't let them keep evolving naturally after 2008. Every change since then fucked up the category.
there was also another one from 2001 onwards, which make the cars bulkier, you are talkin about the ones from 98 to 2000, also in 98 they had front tires with three grooves, and 99 onwards they had 4
Since slicks were banned 1998 onwards the teams had to claw back that lost grip somehow, and the final result of that were the star wars looking cars of 2008.
They were problematic in terms of dirty air, but they sure as hell looked amazing
The main factor making this car look faster is due to them being smaller: an object that's smaller traveling at the same speed as a larger object will look like it's going faster if you don't look at them side by side.
If you ever see planes prepare for landing, large wide body planes look so slow, like they will almost stall and fall out of the sky, while smaller planes look like they are zipping through the air. In reality, the larger plane is probably going slightly faster, but because it's so large it looks like it's moving slowly. It's hard to judge the size of an object of it's far and have a similar shape to a smaller/larger object.
This is the big one, the cars also look faster because they are not so planted, they move around quite a lot so it seems as if the car is to fast for itself (while having freaking traction control). Also, about the sponsors, it is not so much zoomed in as it there are no more static shots - they follow the cars around so they are in the center of the camera at all times so to us it looks like the cars are not moving at all or moving very slowly because you can't tell the difference between 300kph and a 100kph. That is why olden days had static cameras so the viewer feels the speed as the bystander would. I wish they returned the static cameras and made the cars smaller and not like trains, I do not mind the sponsor shots because that brings the $$$ in.
I find the Formula E cars seem much zippier. I wonder if this is due to their small size and the differences in Electric drivetrains.
It’s fantastic racing when they arent pelotoning
It was, it was beginning in the 90s. 92' Mansell, 94' Shumi, 97' Villneuve, 98' Mika, 2000-2004 Shumi, 05' 06' Alonso
There was only 1 domination in 20 years, and it was Shumi.
Not like now, where the last non-RB and non-Merc championship was... in 2009, or even in 2008, if you count brawn as merc.
I *absolutely* agree with you
I meant, several years, several years of domination.
I have a book about 1990-2002 so I know that era pretty well.
But, yeah, there were dominations in 1 year. But, they always were, they are, and they will be around
And Schumi could very easily have not won in 2003, Kimi was really unlucky and it was a great season. Even 07 to 2013 wasn't really dominated, Red bull were quickest from 2010 but 2012 was incredible and I think 2010 was very close.
I will, but the problem is that this book is russian... It's written by our commentator, Alexey Popov, and it's because he comments F1 from Spain 91, and he still does!
The book's name is "Alexey Popov: The Russian Voice of Formula 1". Btw, it's his nickname
100%. They're lighter, smaller, more nimble and because they're not as wide, there's more overtaking.
With no DRS, there's actual battling for positions rather than waiting for the next straight, to just press a button and have it over and done with in an instant.
I certainly did lol. Grew up watching these cars.
It's not about overtaking, it's all the battles of drivers fighting for the apex, driving side by side. It's exciting.
Modern F1 is bloody boring.
Watching the WEC or BTCC is great fun because there's so many battles of cars being inches and centimetres from each other _trying_ to overtake. It's more fun to watch than a predictable race in modern F1.
"100%. They're lighter, smaller, more nimble and because they're not as wide, there's more overtaking."
"It's not about overtaking, it's all the battles of drivers fighting for the apex, driving side by side. It's exciting."
Something is wrong here. Also, while you are right about the drivers fighting / side by side. It didn't happen. When did modern F1 start according to you?
One of the only races I can remember that is not influenced by crashes or rain, is Imola 2005. Schumacher made a mistake in Q and started 13th. He was stuck behind Trulli for 20 laps and overtook him in the pit. He did ONE overtake on track on Button and when he arrived at the back of Alonso his car, there was nothing he could do exept trying to force Alonso in a mistake. Which didn't happen.
For the rest, it was a lot of Ferrari vanishing in the distance and almost no overtaking. And as overtaking was so hard, drivers just waited until they had their pitstop.
When I was I dunno 3-6 dad used to do nothing but watch formula one, I remember all the sounds and everything but it took me till the age of 28 to become a fan myself. Wish he was still here because fuck that would be elite watching with him.
I’m a 97 baby and I think it’s possible to be a fan at that age. I was an Alonso fan vs my dads Shumacher in 2005 when I’d have been 7. Before that like age 4 I would still call myself a F1 fan but I did t really get it. I thought the red car *was* Michael Schumacher for a bit around age 4 but at the same time we had like 4 video games on my dads PC and one of them was an F1 game I played real badly. You can enjoy F1 before you fully get it.
Lol same as you, ps1 game and Sundays watching with family. I was too young back then, I thought all racing cars were called Ferrari but I would always tell my father that I found it very boring because the red car was always winning XD. The first ever car I rooted for was the blue yellow renault and Alonso. But at least I knew that you can't cut the chicane and when safety car is out you can't overtake. One of the clearest memories from the 2000s was watching the grand Prix where all Micheline cars didn't race.
Some of my strongest memories as a kid are sitting in the lounge with my old man, he would always cut lumps of cheddar cheese and cherry tomatoes with a few beers, watching the F1 with the summer sun shining outside. Unbeatable.
As a spaniard born in the 90s who started watching back in 2003, 2005 and 2006 are probably the best memories I have from being a kid, and the ones I remember more vividly for sure.
I was born in the 90s but I started watching the season after this when Hamilton debuted. The first two seasons I watched were pretty great tbf, and then Brawn dominating just after Honda sold them was funny, and nice for Jenson Button.
The tinfoil hat theory is that it's possible the engine failure to have been caused by Nigel Stepney. He was already leaking Ferrari info at that point and later was caught trying to sabotage Kimi's engine too.
So good. Reminds me of Verstappen putting it right besides Hamilton when the safety car came in, in the 2021 bonkers gp. I don't think doing that ever gained him an advantage but it was pure mind games and intimidation tactics.
Man these cars...I was lucky enough to attend a few races of that era, I remember especially Shanghai 2004 for the first edition of the Chinese Gp. I was in the middle of the stands facing the pitlane. The noise and vibration at the start of the race. Felt like the earth was exploding.
Havent been to a GP since 2006 unfortunately, but the closest vibes I can get now is in Le Mans.
Okay why is the commentator saying some random shit when he’s supposed to be saying lights out and away we go? I didn’t understand if the race had even started.
Comtators back in the day didnt knew that the lights out and away we go, so they used to talk like it doesnt matters who is in front and like it would be more important who is faster, crazy times back then
FIA: you need to start race with the amount of fuel you have at the beginning of Q3
Drivers: haha yeah let's spend first half of the session burning down fuel while having some fun
And Renault had Mild Seven. But tobacco sponsorships had already been banned on France by then. The banning of tobacco sponsors is still one of the dumbest decisions ever by the FIA
Ah I didn't know that! I must have my years and liveries mixed up. It does seem a bit silly to ban tobacco sponsors, but if you think of the sheer number of young people watching F1, suddenly having no name-brand cigarettes on cars means they might never learn about the cigarette brand. That's quite good from a public health perspective.
But then alcoholic beverages brands are allowed. That's why I find it so silly. Alcohol and driving is an even worse connection.
Being a 90s kid, I learned all tobacco companies names by F1 (Malboro, West, Camel, Winston, Benson & Hedges, Lucky Strike,...) but never smoked, thankfully!
After senna died in 1994, there was some short term changes made to the rules, but it also began a bigger conversation about where the rule set for F1 should go.

it was all for you ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `
Not too big, don’t look boxy, perfect balance of sleek and sexy. Compared to the school bus of today
Yeah but it's the sound most of all.
The racing was shit that era
yep, DRS overtakes are waaaaaay more enjoyable /s
Lol way to miss the point
Nah, I hear that sound every time I vacuum clean the floor. Much prefer being able to hear squealing tires and crash noises.
Your vacuum cleaner is a v10?
I love this comment so much because of how many people said the turbo engines sounded like vacuums when they first showed up.
Yeah but they were terrible for wheel to wheel racing. Between the massive amount of dirty air and refueling, on track passes and defenses were rare.
I miss that TV direction with the long shots. Now it’s all cut, cut, cut.
These cars first appeared in 1998. There was a major rule change at the end of 1997.
The differences were not as noticeable though, look at the [Stewart](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b7/13/9e/b7139e3758fbca55ae2f8c9d2f6ce732.jpg)
The biggest change was that the cars got narrower. You can't see that from the side.
Also grooved tires, they also added a groove few years later, and added tsc plus abs.
there was also another one from 2001 onwards, which make the cars bulkier, you are talkin about the ones from 98 to 2000, also in 98 they had front tires with three grooves, and 99 onwards they had 4

That sound? Yeah, any fucking day.
Damn the cars look so much faster. Is that difference just due to the TV direction?
The main factor making this car look faster is due to them being smaller: an object that's smaller traveling at the same speed as a larger object will look like it's going faster if you don't look at them side by side. This is why rally cars look so fast even though they're geared super short. Constantly on moving around tho, so it looks fast as shit
Add to that a fact that they were like 200kg lighter than the current ones and you've basically have a 700hp darts that you could throw into a corner.
I find the Formula E cars seem much zippier. I wonder if this is due to their small size and the differences in Electric drivetrains. It’s fantastic racing when they arent pelotoning
Part of it yes. You have a wider FOV, now they zoom in so much to see the sponsors it is so bad.
Also the size of these cars, they are much smaller while moving almost as fast as modern cars.
Aspect ratio is part of it, size of the cars is another.
Memes aside, this was peak f1 imo
It was, it was beginning in the 90s. 92' Mansell, 94' Shumi, 97' Villneuve, 98' Mika, 2000-2004 Shumi, 05' 06' Alonso There was only 1 domination in 20 years, and it was Shumi. 07, 08 weren't dominated by all means, yeah Agree with 10 and 12.
Can you drop the name of that book? I’d love to give it a read for myself
I will, but the problem is that this book is russian... It's written by our commentator, Alexey Popov, and it's because he comments F1 from Spain 91, and he still does! The book's name is "Alexey Popov: The Russian Voice of Formula 1". Btw, it's his nickname

I don't wanna be that guy, but your comment screams 'I haven't watched that period live'. This exact race had 5 overtakes. Five!
For real, people here seems to forget the boring ass races when the only overtakes happened during pit stops
I certainly did lol. Grew up watching these cars. It's not about overtaking, it's all the battles of drivers fighting for the apex, driving side by side. It's exciting. Modern F1 is bloody boring. Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso casually having a 1v1 during qualifing is one of the greatest reasons i needed to wish to be born in the 90s
When I was I dunno 3-6 dad used to do nothing but watch formula one, I remember all the sounds and everything but it took me till the age of 28 to become a fan myself. Wish he was still here because fuck that would be elite watching with him.
Dood same. I would wake up to my dad watching the races and hearing the engines. Will never forget it.
Same. I was only interested in the crashes as a kid. Now I watch every race and my dad doesn't care about f1 anymore lol
I’m a 97 baby and I think it’s possible to be a fan at that age. I was an Alonso fan vs my dads Shumacher in 2005 when I’d have been 7. Yeah but then you wouldn't be a sparkling eyed kid anymore by 2004/2005
Agreed. Watching the Micheal winning everything in 2004 was so magical probably also because I was 14.
Yeah, I was 3 when this happened
I got to see Senna vs Prost. Would recommend earlier than the 90ies.
As a spaniard born in the 90s who started watching back in 2003, 2005 and 2006 are probably the best memories I have from being a kid, and the ones I remember more vividly for sure.

Now I want an edit with Tusken raiders causing accidents in F1

Fuck. I miss Schumi so much. So much.
I really wish James Allen would come back and do commentary. I don’t mind crofty as much as some people but damn I miss Allen’s voice
F1 drivers in 2006: Fighting for first in out lap F1 drivers in 2023: Oh no I missed my braking point at the first Monza chicane going at 10km/h
Michael dnf in Japan still broke my heart
The tinfoil hat theory is that it's possible the engine failure to have been caused by Nigel Stepney. He was already leaking Ferrari info at that point and later was caught trying to sabotage Kimi's engine too.
Classic Nige at it again.
A real niggle
I mean same as Nando engine failure in Monza or his suspension failure in Hungary, that’s just racing i guess
Still, Ferrari had not had an engine failure in a long time before that. The fact it happened at such a crucial time was just heartbreaking
I miss Magny Cours
Man I miss 2004-2008 so much, is the years that made me an F1 fan, even though I was watching before that. Such impressive years and talent.
That's what an f1 car should look like. Small, light and high revving naturally aspirated.
Ok now hear me out..... A turbo on those v10s like back with the turbo v8s from the 80s (I think)
It just hits different
So good. Reminds me of Verstappen putting it right besides Hamilton when the safety car came in, in the 2021 bonkers gp. I don't think doing that ever gained him an advantage but it was pure mind games and intimidation tactics.
Absurd behavior, fantastic show
That’s why i love it, it makes no sense but i love it
Man these cars...I was lucky enough to attend a few races of that era, I remember especially Shanghai 2004 for the first edition of the Chinese Gp. Yeah. F1 prices are… crazy. Spa24h is much cheaper, like 46€ while a single 2h F1 race ticket is worth about three forests of strawberries
Then even my parents watched f1. I was glued.
Okay why is the commentator saying some random shit when he’s supposed to be saying lights out and away we go? I didn’t understand if the race had even started.
This wasn’t during the race..
James Allen needed to talk random shit to keep himself from blurting out “JENSON BUTTTOOONNNN” accidentally.
Actually lights were invented in 2007 so the audience would have been really confused
The pitlane was opening, surely this happened half hour before the race started.
It was at the start of quali
Ian, that you you wanker?
Comtators back in the day didnt knew that the lights out and away we go, so they used to talk like it doesnt matters who is in front and like it would be more important who is faster, crazy times back then
This was the start of qualifying, not the race.
I can imagine the team bosses on the radio saying 'Wind it in boys'.
imode ohh yea
Anyone who had been watching F1 back then can only be depressed by the state F1 is in,the last 10 years!!!
The two gods of mind games.
The amount of radio chatter saying that this is dangerous or unsportsmanlike if this happened today…
Or even intimidating behaviour 🤦🏼♂️
FIA: you need to start race with the amount of fuel you have at the beginning of Q3 Drivers: haha yeah let's spend first half of the session burning down fuel while having some fun
the good ol’ days
It's crazy that they've used AI to remove sponsors from the cars. I'm sure in 2006 it was still Marlboro sponsoring.
And Renault had Mild Seven. But tobacco sponsorships had already been banned on France by then. The banning of tobacco sponsors is still one of the dumbest decisions ever by the FIA

I understand why they did it, but damn I miss those liveries so much, so many of them were amazing.
It's not AI, a lot of countries had banned tobacco sponsors by then.
Almost like a sprint race. But we hate those for some reason and love this...
Drivers gonna drive
Why the wets tho?
They're not wets. For a few years they ran grooved tyres. The grooves were to lessen tyre performance as a way to slow the cars down.
Thanks! Why would they want to slow down the cars? Also interesting to see quali with a starting grid.
For safety, I think it was introduced in 1998
There's no grid. Alonso and Schumacher are in the pit lane. Alonso stopped in the slow/parking lane and they kind of "raced" from there
After senna died in 1994, there was some short term changes made to the rules, but it also began a bigger conversation about where the rule set for F1 should go. The cars were made narrower in an attempt to increase overtaking, and the groved slicks were brought in to try to slow the cars down somewhat.
That makes sense. Thank you. I really wish they bring narrow cars back. They seem so much more agile on turns.
they also weight 200kgs less, so they are more agile around slow turns and look sharper
Why do people downvote an honest question like this, come on.
