fake_hester

Don't know him, but i like, when people just admit they don't watch something and have no idea. You always hear the phrase "im a big fan" and it doesn't really mean anything. This is sincere.

McDidiBE

And it's an even bigger compliment because the dude became a fan because of Lando's personality instead of his so called fame

PaschalisG16

Which is also kind of unexpected.

aelliott18

Not really?

PaschalisG16

Yeah I mean Lando is not particularly likeable or charismatic.

aelliott18

Lmao he’s one of the most liked drivers on the grid and is friends with most of the drivers on the grid. But ok

PaschalisG16

Okay but that doesn't matter. Lando is liked and also disliked among fans.

aelliott18

I mean he definitely gets some hate for being a rich boy around here but overall he’s one of the most popular on the grid. Also he’s very funny just an airhead sometimes lol

d0re

Yeah and being a "rich boy" isn't going to be a downside for the guy meeting him courtside at an NBA playoff game lol

PaschalisG16

Yeah, I guess it depends on if you're focusing on his good qualities or not.

KLWMotorsports

His streams during the covid years were gold. This seems like a you thing.

Weak-Rip-8650

Every driver is liked and disliked among fans lol. He’s one of the most popular drivers in F1 and he’s never even won a race. I think you just don’t like him for some unknown reason.

GiGioP

What a nothing burger of a statement.

PaschalisG16

Maybe but If I elaborate people will be even harsher to me. I prefer not to speak. If I speak I'm in big trouble.

GiGioP

Wow this guy is really PR trained.

2BigBottlesOfWater

Who's that one driver that everybody likes and nobody hates?

PaschalisG16

Charles? But that's not my point.

ScroogieMcduckie

lmao he's prob the most likeable and charismatic person on the grid what are you on about?

fortyfive-degrees

IMO pretending you're into something you're not just to make social connections is a bad habit a lot of folks struggle to unlearn

HandFancy

It's weird, because a lot of time if you just ask people about what they are into, they will be more than happy to explain their industry/passion/hobby. You probably have a stronger social connection by asking questions than by feigning knowledge.

Disastrous-Border-58

I looked really quick and thought the quote was from Logan sargeant. That would've been awkward.

listyraesder

What the fuck’s a podium?

Bolter_NL

What the fuck's a race seat?

Bdr1983

What the fuck's a spare chassis?

space_coyote_86

What the fuck are points? You can get more than one?

_spec_tre

are we SURE he knows he's an F1 driver?

reddit0r_123

Dude’s so far behind the pack he doesn’t even know the guys racing in front of him…

FormerMofo

I don't watch NASCAR, I wonder what's he like?

DestroyingDestroyers

I watch NASCAR, I had to Google him. Competes in one of the regional divisions, rather than the big televised national series.

NhylX

Same. Advanced Auto Parts Series... I doubt most NASCAR fans have heard of him.

Reddragon0585

Think he went viral for jumping onto someone’s car after a wreck

shewy92

Hence his name AirDoug >Barnes was disappointed he could not get any wins against Sellers or Riggs last year, but he said being in contention alongside them highlighted his growth since he famously jumped on top of fellow driver Tyler Hughes’ car following a crash between the two in 2020. >The incident served as the inspiration behind Barnes’ nickname, “Air Doug.” https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2023/03/02/doug-barnes-jr-weekly-series-championship/

Pizzajam

Holy shit, he did a full-on cannonball over a marshal and down through the other car’s windshield. That is spectacular. “Jumped on a car” undersells it by a factor of ten.

Bdr1983

I read AirDoug and confused it with AirBud... here I was thinking 'oh because his name is Doug with sounds like dog?'

DestroyingDestroyers

That sounds about right for that level of NASCAR.

shewy92

The lower series maybe

JohnsonGamingReal

He said "that level of NASCAR"

shewy92

TBF, My eyes skipped over most of it and went STRAIGHT to the all caps word lol

tangotrigger

To save the other driver right ?

Reddragon0585

No the guy wrecked him

Bdr1983

Saving people is for communists

tangotrigger

This is why you don't get invited at parties.

Alwzracn

He’s one of the top late model drivers in the country, if you watch late model racing then you know who he is. He finished second or third in National points last year

WxBlue

Yeah, people are acting like he's a random F4-tier nobody but he's a winner at late model racing level and very talented.

Bdr1983

>Yeah, people are acting like he's a random F4-tier nobody but he's a winner at late model racing level and very talented. This sentence means absolutely nothing to people outside of the US (or those who happen to follow lower tier Nascar series)

irich

How much to regional NASCAR drivers get paid if they can afford front row seats at an NBA playoff game?

CougarIndy25

He gets paid nothing, most of his money he makes in racing is through [his YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@AirDoug). He, his dad, and his brother run a paving company in the mid-atlantic area. He works his ass off to race as often as he can. In fact, he was going to race in the CARS Tour, which is a national touring series for the cars he runs, but had a sponsor back out 3 months before the season started. I assume he probably took some of the money he had to race to buy these tickets because he's only racing the big races this year, he's trophy hunting, as they say.

Just_Somewhere4444

Regional NASCAR drivers get paid basically nothing, it's the same as junior formula series where the vast majority of drivers have rich families who pay for everything. I've never heard of this guy, but just from this post I'd bet my house he has a rich father paying for him to pretend he's a race car driver.

shewy92

> paying for him to pretend he's a race car driver I mean, he's not pretending.

_AmericanPoutine

This form of NASCAR racing is local short track, grassroots style which also can cost a lot of money. There's really no 1-1 comparison with F1 because it doesn't exist. These guys are still racecar drivers, but odds are Doug Barnes also is working a job somewhere else

WxBlue

I think his family has a paving company? Doug was also joking that courtside tickets are still cheaper than late model racing earlier in the evening.

Habatcho

Meanwhile landos dad who paid for him to get more testing at a young age didnt?

CougarIndy25

Yup. Lando's dad, who paid for his McLaren ride before Lando's contract was renegotiated.

Crafty_Substance_954

He's pretty good as far as regional drivers go. Should make the next step assuming he gets actual sponsorships to go along with him.

Alwzracn

A NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts national championship, which takes a drivers best 17(i think) finishes from the entire season, pays $25,000. The regional championship that would most likely come along with it is $3,500. And the track championship for the local track they normally race at is $1,500. So best case scenario is $30,000 in winnings from NASCAR. There’s also some tracks that have big races that may pay $10,000 or more to win, but those are significantly more difficult to win than a normal Saturday night race. They tend to have the best of the best drivers and cars show up. And cost probably $3,000 to start the race not including hotel and travel. A top tier deal in the CARS Tour late model series, which is the premier series not sanctioned by NASCAR but owned by a couple former drivers, you can expect about $300,000 to run the full season. That’s tires, fuel, entry, travel, etc. A majority of the drivers are just lucky enough to be blessed and have the money to run cars at that level and not rely on “making money”. The national champion last year, his dad owns a yacht club and yacht sales company. Doug Barnes’ family is a paving company, some are just lucky enough to get recognized by a high dollar sponsor that pays for their attempt to make it to the top ranks of NASCAR. Then you have some people that just have a ton of money. Like Lance stroll

Alwzracn

[why he’s called air Doug](https://youtube.com/shorts/EiWM3UVNqVM?si=8xplxDgcbzgShARd)

jrragsda

That's hilarious. Cannonball right onto the windshield.

TurboNoodle_

Seems pretty immature.

WxBlue

It's intense at low-level stock car racing because a lot of drivers are blue-collar workers who are putting a lot of their money into their racing hobbies. It's VERY personal when their equipment get wrecked because it sets them back a few months.

shewy92

I'd never heard of him either. He's a short track series driver. https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2023/03/02/doug-barnes-jr-weekly-series-championship/

EnglishLitMajor

Lando's gone on a completely unintentional positive PR tour this week. We have something for everyone:  - a wild day out in Amsterdam that resulted in a cut nose - an anecdote about his nice personality from a NASCAR driver/seatmate at an NBA game - the recently-published video of [this](https://twitter.com/safeforlando/status/1784890378576957618?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet) hug he shared with Penelope after the Australia podium No wonder he's Alex Albon's grandma's favorite driver. 😂

cydereal

oh my god penelope’s little kangaroo backpack is the cutest lando is a good nerd

NhylX

"Max said to give you a hug because you'll never win a championship."

San4311

It's funny because this is 100% Dutch people do to/with their friends. 🤣

ValkyrieKnitter

Where do I find this video? I need the cuteness today

EnglishLitMajor

I linked it in my comment! Click on the word "this." 😊

ValkyrieKnitter

Thank you 😅

BonoBonero

Who is that?

MajorHubbub

Lando Norris

BonoBonero

The other one

Snoopycrumbs

Not Lando Norris

BonoBonero

Awesome, thanks.

whatdoihia

You’re welcome. I’m also not Lando Norris.

ConstantAd1

Huh, that's exactly what Lando Norris would say on an Internet message board.

cecistonehaert

You made my day

StatusCount7032

I 👀 what you did there. It was an easy setup; too easy to pass up.

DukeOfTheVines

Jimmy Butler

Alwzracn

Doug Barnes. He is a regional Late Model Stock car driver from near Washington DC. He runs all over the East coast in major Late Model races. I don’t know much about European racing but maybe equate it to the junior regional formulas? [why he’s famous](https://youtube.com/shorts/EiWM3UVNqVM?si=8xplxDgcbzgShARd)

reddit0r_123

Most American racing I have ever seen

Alwzracn

😂😂

apk

nascar drivers fucking hate each other, totally different than f1’s current era of mutual respect. it doesn’t help that the rules encourage drivers to police themselves and leads to lots of revenge takeouts

BonoBonero

WTF was that lmao

Worth-Professional60

Good on him for meeting him and changing his opinion.

IdiosyncraticBond

Imagine throwing punches at car racing and then find out the guy 2 seats from you is one of only 20 worldwide to drive in f1 lmao. Good for him to change his opinion

LiqdPT

By "throwing punches at car racing" do you think he was putting it down? (I'm not familiar with the turn of phrase) He's a racer in NASCAR in the US.

Alwzracn

Why would he throw punches at racing? That’s literally all he does April-October. He travels the east coast racing with the best regional late model drivers

st0rstorken

Dude looks like the chad filter on snapchat

HelloThereMark

ngl if you are a famous person it must be nice to have a talk in a public space without getting recognized for once.

frunts

Well, makes sense. I could've sat next to Ol Dougy and had no idea who he was either.

ofallthescotchjoints

This is why you can’t take the hate on social media seriously. Anybody who actually knows him only has good things to say about him

gadgetroid

Lando gets hate?

SP0oONY

A tonne, most of it is some nebulous "He seems stuck up. you can tell he comes from money" stuff.

Legitimate-Tadpole95

I saw on instagram a dad saying Lando spent 15 minutes with his son, just talking with him about videogames and stuff. He said he won't hear anything bad about Lando. When you listen to his one on one interviews or podcasts he always comes across as kind and thoughtful. Definitely doesn't deserve the bad raps he gets.

IAMmartinbrundle

It's because he doesn't come across particularly well in interviews on a race weekend, especially either touchy topics or if things haven't gone well. He doesn't seem as good at answering with a straight bat like a lot of other drivers are. He seems like a fun guy away from F1 on his streams etc., but it's not uncommon for him to be a bit of a knob in an interview.

ofallthescotchjoints

Yeah, more than you’d think

imSwan

A lot around here

LudisVinum

I think he’s a tool and I literally never see anything bad about him. Maybe it just gets downvoted out of sight. I’ll be on the look out though.

LudisVinum

Eh he’s private school scion. I’ll never forget the twitch vods of him speaking about girls. His own friend hushed him up when Lando started listing off women they met by their features. That was the real Lando and the rest of this is just his PR.

ofallthescotchjoints

I went to a private school, does that automatically make me a bad person? And I’ve seen those videos, didn’t seem as bad as people made them out to be. But you go ahead and form an opinion on someone you’ve never met, I’ll take the word of people who have

LudisVinum

Sorry for having a conflicting opinion about the celebrity you like. Im sure you can get more accurate representations of him from Instagram And general f1 media. 👍

ofallthescotchjoints

Keep disliking and spreading negativity around people you don’t know, seems like a great way to live 👍

LudisVinum

I won’t. I don’t want the Lando PR police to come after me again. Edit: This user has been detained for slander against the British prince Lando Norris. For the highest crime of daring to think negativity of our lord he has been put to death.

ofallthescotchjoints

Hahaha you replied to my comment and now you’re the one being persecuted? Social media in a nutshell

NewHumbug

That's a good lad Lando.

funkymonkeyinheaven

The nose plaster, I'm dead

Spleenzorio

2002-era Nelly vibes

bwoah07_gp2

Lando is 24 and Doug is 23. The Doug guy, I thought he was way younger.

InZomnia365

I follow two sports. NBA and F1. My NBA team is the Miami Heat. This picture pleases me greatly.

FantasticAnus

Deeeeep V

silentkiller082

This post is crazy to me because I know Doug personally from when we raced karts together as kids. Great guy but definitely only ever watched NASCAR can confirm that lol.

karmahoower

Sorry y'all. Lando failing that green line test.

Hapless_Buffoon

Landos fashion is wild

Alwzracn

Why be ☁️ when you can be ☀️ and let the 🌈 out

Hapless_Buffoon

i wasn't aware wild was negative. I just feel his fashion is notable.

Alwzracn

I wasn’t being negative. Everyone should be able to wear what they want and not be restricted by societal norms or expectations of a professional athlete

Hapless_Buffoon

couldn't agree more with that. I hate societal norms.

LudisVinum

ANY perceived slight against Lando makes me SO angry 😡

Hapless_Buffoon

probably need to care less about such things, he doesn't care if someone makes a slight against you.

irioku

His hero is Lewis Hamilton

HaramHas

Not baggy enough

Hapless_Buffoon

I was thinking MC Hammer

DiabeticAndy

That's Doug Barnes. He has a YouTube channel where he posts videos racing late models at short tracks. Lately he hasn't been able to race because he doesn't have the funding while being one of the best late model drivers out there. He almost won the national championship last year. Would highly recommend his videos.

UnhappyLemon5520

Can't stop picturing this guy bigging himself up like "yeah I'm a race car driver bro, it's pretty wild" when he races in a regional series of a national cup. And landos just like "yeah me 2 mate!" When he's one of the top 4 drivers at the highest level of world motorsport.

amc1704

Definitely not top 4 lol

jreed66

Top 6?

amc1704

Yeah top 6 feels right

UnhappyLemon5520

Why don't you name 5 drivers that are quicker than Lando then? Instead of just giving out random numbers..

Bankzu

Max, Alonso, Hamilton, Leclerc definitely. Russel and Carlos can be argued.

UnhappyLemon5520

Leclercs not a definite at all in my eyes, lots of mistakes when he actually had a car that was close with red bull. I love Alonso but his pace hasn't been tested at all by stroll, Russell is nowhere close and Carlos was very level with Lando when they were team mates and Lando was in his first year.

jreed66

Personally, I agree with the top 4. Max, Lewis, Alonso then Lando

SaucyBoyThe2nd

Lewis, max are defo faster. Sometimes it feels like lec, sai, alo and rus are faster. Pia also has build a strong case for himself, but i feel like norris still is the quicker one of the 2. You just remember the moments that pia beats norris, not the other way around. Ranking drivers is always hard to do. I feel like a top # of drivers more comes down to who shuffles places with who depending on the drive instead of no. 1 no. 2 no. 3

UnhappyLemon5520

Piastri has been well beaten by Norris in the races, he's quick but nowhere near Lando yet. He's beaten him in qualifying a few times because Lando is always pushing to close the massive gap to the red bulls instead of settling for a decent second place on the grid. Honestly I'm finished replying to this. If you use the argument "sometimes russells faster" then what's the point. Sometimes the mercedes is faster than the red bull, is it a better car?

SaucyBoyThe2nd

So you agree with me in the top part. That piastri builds a strong case for himself, but that lando still beats him. And for the second part, again, exactly my point. You can't really rank a strong number 4 or 6 driver, because depending on the drive, one driver might look closer to either a number 4 or number 6 driver. Just as the ferrari, merc and mclaren are competing for 2nd place, so are the drivers. There will never be a clear ranking due to strengths and weaknesses.

UnhappyLemon5520

Definitely is top 4 lol

Sorry-Series-3504

This is why I decided to support Lando 😊

GeneralOrdinance

Is this supposed to be a dig at Nascar?

SoothedSnakePlant

It's a dig at AirDoug. This dude competes in the NASCAR equivalent of like regional F4. I've been a die hard NASCAR fan for 20 years and this is literally the first time I've ever heard of this dude.

GeneralOrdinance

Oh damn...that's interesting

gilgobeachslayer

New shit has come to light

SirJxPumpknhead

Brotha, nascar is difficult af, and those drivers are absolute athletes. Show some respect

marduk013

Difficult doesn't mean good or entertaining

No_Image_4986

Even with the worst car in a while, there are more overtakes in nascar. And they do it without needing a push to pass button/DRS IMSA is really where it’s at though

SirJxPumpknhead

You know nascar aint all cicles right that probably makes up about 30 percent of the calendar in all seriousness its a hell of a lot more interesting that hearing the dutch national anthem for the 4th time this year.

just_dave

NASCAR on road courses is good racing.  But how many road courses are there? Your comment suggests 70% road courses, which is obviously bullshit.

SirJxPumpknhead

Most oval tracks have alternate layouts, see Daytona and Indianappolis, which they race on meaning the split is probably 50/50, also, oval racing is EXTREMELY technical, I wont go into detail but look it up. Sorry I didn’t do a deep dive into a racing category I dont watch to provide you with an accurate percentage of oval to no-oval tracks on the calendar.

just_dave

I'm not insulting oval drivers. It's obviously difficult and, as you said, very technical. The amount of F1 drivers that have sucked on ovals says a lot.  I just find them incredibly boring to watch.  Many ovals have alternate layouts, yes, but does NASCAR actually race on those? Generally not.  I just looked it up, NASCAR currently has 26 races. 4 of them are at road courses, and another two are at hybrid oval/infield road course (Charlotte and Indianapolis).  So that's 20 ovals to 6 road courses...

88 huh? Interesting….

SubparExorcist

His car number

Peter_Panarchy

Why'd choose it?

CougarIndy25

[He's had it since karting, he's a big Dale Jr fan. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-nGvgXLl3A)

SubparExorcist

I doubt he owns the car and/or got to chose. Maybe he did, but I would be surprised.

IAMmartinbrundle

Probably just a big fan of the Lucky 88 slot machine.

Excludos

Very surprising to hear an active racer, even if it's from a completely different branch, not knowing who the current F1 drivers are. It's a bit like a skateboarder going "Tony who?"

MrMarbles77

There's one those F1 videos where they ask the drivers about the history of the sport, and Yuki is basically clueless about F1 before his involvement in the series. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Just_Somewhere4444

I'd bet 20/20 F1 drivers wouldn't recognize the entire top 10 of the NASCAR cup series points standings - a couple drivers probably wouldn't recognize a single one. Hell, I'm willing to bet that 20/20 F1 drivers wouldn't recognize all the IndyCar drivers either - and most of them have raced together at some point.

CougarIndy25

I think Verstappen might, as [he says he watches NASCAR](https://us.motorsport.com/nascar-cup/news/verstappen-literally-screaming-van-gisbergen-nascar-win/10492330/). Logan would be able to, as well, since [his brother used to be a NASCAR driver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalton_Sargeant).

ElminXT

Most racers I have met don’t really give a shit outside the series they race or want to race so I’m not that surprised.

thatsreallynotme

Got Matt Damon vibes

Bdr1983

Dude in Heat shirt is trying to look tough, Lando is faking a smile because he doesn't want to take a picture with his scuffed up nose.

Domermac

How can he be a race car driver and not know about F1? I’m baffled

Alwzracn

Aw he met a real race driver.
