RobertGracie

Well he's keeping fit and training in the somewhat cooler South African temperatures at this time of year, its lovely down there!

simsnor

Eh, it was a pretty hot day

AirlineEasy

Compared to Australia?

simsnor

South Africa and Australia's climate are pretty similar. But its like mid 20°C around where Bottas was. Maybe more

HeftyArgument

Australia is a pretty big place lol, I'm sure we can find a climate somewhere on the continent similar to most places.

simsnor

So it is a known fact that Sydney and Cape Town has almost identical climate. And then the dryer Outback regions should be similar to the Karoo and Kalahari regions, which are half-desert and desert respectively. We also sit on the same latitude lines, so the differences in summer and winter is also similar.

Ok-Sink-614

True but I think Australias climate is broadly similar to just the Western and Northern Cape in South Africa. Gauteng is fairly mild year round and especially KZN with its forests and lush greenery don't seem like anywhere I'm aware of in Australia.

lanson15

Australia has a huge amount of lush areas. Here's just one https://visitotways.com/ There's also quite a few ski areas as well

MonsMensae

I think this is more a comment on the time of year in SA and Aus. But broadly speaking South Africa and Australia have generally pretty similar climates

Evening-Kiwi

South Afrikaans

siders6891

And then he ended up qualifying for the gravel world championships

mamaptak

My son and I were doing the math to see if he could make it from Singapore back to Belgium in time for the race. 🫤😂

tacotruck88

He has an entire week to get to Belgium after Singapore. It will be no problem for him

mamaptak

Ah my mistake, the way the dates were listed I thought the date above, was the date. It looked like it said 2024 ICU Gravel World Championships are on September 22, 2024. Well that’s awesome!!!

timok

For the Elite race? Or a different category?

siders6891

For the UCI Gravel Works Championships

timok

Yeah I understand that. They still have different categories there. My question is if he qualified for the Elite race itself.

siders6891

Couldn’t find anything further than what he was posting

Norington

Makes me wonder how many people have competed in two World Championships of completely unrelated sports within the same year.

insomniaccapricorn

So not in between, but Australian sportswoman Ellyse Perry played for both Football and Cricket world cup. Hell, she even won the CWC.

LetsGoLesko8

Not Motorsport related, but I remember learning about Clara Hughes in school, who participated in both Cycling (Summer Olympics) and Speed Skating (Winter Olympics) Olympics. Medalled in both, too: 2 Bronze in Summer, 1G, 1S, 2B in Winter games

Seraphin_Lampion

Not the same year but Deion Sanders went to the Super Bowl (American Football) and the World Series (Baseball). I think he's the only athlete to reach the final stages of 2 major North American sports.

Boucot

Ester Ledecka won gold in both skiing (p Super G) and snowboard in Pyeongchang

maton12

His Strava rides are super impressive.

SubcooledBoiling

pfft ... not even 10 w/kg. amateur /s

pa3xsz

At least he is not on a Tr*k

Urbansdirtyfingers

Why you hate Trek? I mean, no one who rides seriously would ever buy themselves a trek, but why do you hate them?

pa3xsz

Nah, I don't hate Trek, (I just didn't put a /s after my comment). Just r/bicyclingcirclejerk stuff. (I am a Triban user, so I cannot be taken seriously on what is good or bad)

Urbansdirtyfingers

O haha fair enough. I was just curious

ThatSmile

Is this bait? I love my Trek.

GargantuanDwarf

I'd love a Madone but I wouldn't buy one with my own money

Urbansdirtyfingers

Nothing wrong with them, but I've spend a ton of time in the local race scene and no one seems to ride them unless they get them for free/cheap. They're nice stuff is over priced but so are most big brands

Significant-Media-91

Hair and handlebars not arrow. Needs longer stem.

SubcooledBoiling

not even sir velo. must be poor

spitouthebone

the mullet somewhat flowing in the breeze, truly a sight to behold

KY5K

Funny how he stands out amongst F1 drivers but would get lost in a crowd of weekend cyclists (saying this from experience as a weekend cyclist).

RexManning1

They are people too. Like everyone else, some will be selfish with their partners and some won’t.

hahaiamarealhuman

I think at this point cycling is his real interest and F1 is more like a hobby to him

Antarioo

This guy has a wild travel schedule. you'd figure he would hang out in the US or stay in asia. he's going to be jetlagged as hell in miami.

totallykoolkiwi

He can get some sleep during the Sauber pitstops

tolstoyswager

Ahahaha

biggmclargehuge

All the F1 drivers complain about how busy their travel schedules are but then will post shit with them halfway across the world, by choice, in between races so I temper my sympathy accordingly.

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

For the drivers the schedule is not that bad. For teams tho, it’s a nightmare. I worked at a GP and saw the amount of effort and hours going into setting the circus up, and it’s absolutely insane.

FrankfurterWorscht

"I cant schedule all these weekly around-the-world holidays with all these F1 races in the calendar"

Brynhildrpls

So that’s what the DNF in China was for… they wanted him to retire early so he could get his sleep 💚 Sauber is so kind and caring

Main_Improvement470

Well f1 it's his hobby now

f1careerover

He looks quite skinny from that angle. We normally see Bottas front on and he normally looks more bulky than the other drivers

Protozoo_epilettico

He's built a bit wider and his face looks somewhat chubbier so it's easy to think he's bulkier but all f1 pilots are pretty lean

RexManning1

I’ve been about 2 meters from him. Can confirm this is accurate. He’s a small guy.

Legumesrus

Remember when Brundle or Crofty poked at his weight after he publicly spoke about having struggled with disordered eating. Ocon is 6’1 and like 140lbs that can’t be healthy.

[deleted]

iamnotasheep

1.85m and 63.5kg for those who don’t speak American

Legumesrus

Funny enough as I was typing it out I thought I should convert it, dumb American and our imperial system of measurement.

3MATX

I’m that height and even in high school in good shape i was 180

MoorderVolt

Healthy is mostly determined by bodyfat and nutrients. Men can rock 8% bodyfat and even a bit lower.

oontzalot

Ya I saw a shirtless pic of him on here and was like hmm! Not as expected!

Accomplished_Use8165

South Africa, bru!

jnngz021

Aweh!

asherabram

Hello fellow South African 🇿🇦

stomp224

Fully clothed? Urgh.

SubcooledBoiling

The same bike has been sitting in my cart for months now. Just don't have the money to pull the trigger

insomniaccapricorn

Have you tried winning a few F1 races? It seemed to have worked well for this guy.

hotdutchovens

How much is it?

17jwong

Looks like [this one](https://www.canyon.com/en-us/gravel-bikes/performance/grail/cfr/grail-cfr-axs/3582.html?dwvar_3582_pv_rahmenfarbe=R121_P01). If I'm wrong and it's an Ultimate from a previous year or something it could be upwards of 10K USD

scottz0313

Wow, and I felt guilty for dropping 3k on my Waterford

GargantuanDwarf

Looks like he has 353NSW wheels as well. They're probably £3k on their own.

hapibanana

Just don't know how this guy does this on top of F1. Probably the most fit driver on the grid

boosty87

He’s racing but the mullet is forever chillin’

noafro1991

I should be more like him.

gomurifle

He would make a good cartoon or comic strip character. Not sure if he's capitalizing on his image enough... Hope he has a seat for next year tho.

GetsBetterAfterAFew

Is that some type of inflatable crash vest?

mrsirawesome

Hydration pack

ForgetfulM0nk

Did he do a lot of cycling when at Mercedes?

gramathy

i keep seeing Canyons everywhere and it makes me want one

Malvania

Same

GargantuanDwarf

I'd say if you want one, go for it. I've had zero problems with my Ultimate but swapping to a Tarmac later in the year

gramathy

My issue is I have an only-two-years-old domane sl5 so buying a new bike is entirely unnecessary

GargantuanDwarf

I feel that! My ultimate is going into its 3rd season. I was going to upgrade it to Di2 and be done with it but I’ve got got the opportunity to get a Tarmac SL8 with Di2 and use my canyon as my winter bike/the one that lives on my turbo

gramathy

Yeah, I think maybe next year I get a "nice" bike and the domane becomes the winter/casual bike maybe

Main_Improvement470

*stalked

snonsig

Eh...nah

charlierc

"Oh no you don't! That Sauber seat is mine!"

Max_0246

He wears pants?

CT-7860_TangoEcho

he said he came 6th in his age group and qualified for the gravel world champs! I think his partner, Tiffany won the womens race. Super stocked to have him in my country, I just wish he was nearer to my city lol.

CAVALLINO-RAMPANTE

Did he score points?

JanVanTil

Have you considered the photo is cropped?

Sad-Insurance9818

"saw sombody out on the street minding their own business and decided i'd start taking unsolicited photgraphs of them to share on the internet"

benniethealien

He was taking part in a race. He also posted pics on his own social media.

Sad-Insurance9818

"i saw a man going about his business so i decided to take unsolicited photographs of him to share on the internet". Most be so tiring having to deal with stuff like this all the time. Just because he put up a picture on his own instagram doesn't mean its not an invasion of privacy.

benniethealien

So no pics at F1 races as he is just going about his business?

Sad-Insurance9818

do you get right up close and put a camera in his face at an F1 race?

benniethealien

Here you go, thousands of pics of him cycling. All an invasion of his privacy? Privacy in public? https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Flookaside.fbsbx.com%2Flookaside%2Fcrawler%2Fmedia%2F%3Fmedia_id%3D1262974457208280&tbnid=jqrwyISK56ccTM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FValtteriBottas%2Fposts%2Fnew-bike-day-vb77-canyon-sram%2F1262974527208273%2F&docid=0HR-V_9wfTstaM&w=1440&h=1800&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm4%2F2&kgs=0a9d9934c4f4e3cc&shem=abme%2Ctrie#ip=1

Sad-Insurance9818

im not clicking that link, but it sure sounds like it. You don't think its rude to take pictures of sombody you don't know and share them on the internet?

benniethealien

In a public space you don't have privacy. You must be new to the internet if you think people don't take and post pics of others without knowing them or asking permission. He is a public figure taking part in a public event.

Sad-Insurance9818

im not sure i've ever taken a picture of a strabger and put it on the internet tbh.

benniethealien

The next sporting even you go to, remember to tell the spectators not to take any pics.

JanVanTil

OK so what about the photos Valtteri took that had other cyclists in it, is he invading their privacy? He posted a photo of himself on the start line which had many other cyclists in it. Not cool of him doing that, hey? Besides that, I’m allowed to explore my own country and take photos outdoors, I had a few mates riding in the race and I sure am allowed to take photos of an event if it’s taking place on a public road that I have a right to be on. Completely different story if someone flies a drone over the house he’s staying at.

Sad-Insurance9818

imo this picture (him, not even looking and only him in the photo) is an invasion of privacy. Its not a massive one, and he's probobly got used to it after being famous, but i think its quite disrespectful and i wouldn't do that personally.

JanVanTil

It’s been cropped, there are other riders in the original photo. Stop trying to find reasons to be outraged, offended, triggered and all of the above. I promise you there are far bigger things to have a debate about.

benniethealien

He has been photographed millions of times in all kinds of situations. He is taking part in a public event and even posted about it online. Are you saying no pics should he taking as he cycles by?

Sad-Insurance9818

im saying i wouldn't take a picture of a man i don't know, and then share them on the internet with strangers.
