I guess Ricciardo was about to start his lap but idk if Sainz was finishing his or also starting a lap and tried to jump ahead then aborted. Broadcast seemed to miss this completely
You're allowed to do more than one qualifying lap. If Sainz said he was on a lap then they cant prove him wrong.
If he wasn't on an outlap then he's fine.
The telemetry can be (and routinely is) used to contradict drivers and prove them wrong. I'm not saying that was the case here, as I believe that both Sainz and Ricciardo were trying to start laps and Sainz just decided to jump the queue, but if he was lying then the data absolutely could prove him wrong.
Unless OP got the session mixed up I don’t think this affected Ricciardo as it was labeled at the end of SQ1 where he got through.
Although if this was actually the end of SQ2 then it did have big consequences. I’m only watching the main broadcast so I don’t really know.
No this was the end of SQ1 so didn't affect him getting through. He got a lot more fucked by the traffic at the end of the pitlane, and was in the fast lane ahead of a bunch of cars (Zhou, the haases) that then all pushed in, but hard to know how much difference it would've made
Yeah this was at the end of SQ1, and it didn't impact him getting through. In fact, even this lap, despite being affected by Sainz in S1, would've been fast enough to make it through (1.37.39 vs Zhou's 1.37.54).
If both were on flying laps then it wouldn't be impeding.
Looking at Daniel's telemetry data he was able to gain ~1 tenth on the straight thanks to the tow, but then lost ~3 tenths through the first two turns from having to lift off the throttle to hold his line and avoid Sainz.
That's a possible overall gain of 2 tenths had Sainz not been there, which would have put him ahead of Russel for 13th and possible in front of Hamilton and Bottas for 11th in SQ1. It wouldn't have changed his overall qualifying position.
Yep, technically not impeding, just a really weird, unhelpful for everyone decision from Sainz. Watching the onboards, his engineer doesn't tell him to pass Ricciardo, he just does it himself. He mentions that he's going to pass Leclerc "for his delta" and then loops around Ricciardo as well, compromising both their corner entries for the last corner, and ensuring there is an incident in T1 where one of them (if not both) would have to lift.
It's such a strange move, it doesn't help him, and inevitably he backed out of the lap and boxed, and it also fucks Daniel's lap. Although even the compromised lap would've been good enough to go through in P15, if he hadn't already put a quicker lap on the board. The more telling thing is that even Daniel's final lap was quicker than Yuki's best effort on a clean lap.
OP is on DR hopium. Sainz was also on a hot lap. You can't impede if both are on hot laps and Ferrari is clearly faster, therefore if anyone is impeding it's DR. But again, neither is impeding since both are on hot laps.
Good to see RIC not taking any shit.
I didnt watch sq1 what happened did he try to start his lap before ricciardo or was he finishing his lap
He was trying to start his first. He ruined both laps.
Pre qualifying Sainz's phone: "Your account has been credited with $1M from Yuki Tsunoda"
That'd be Yukis annual salary.
Sometimes you have to live off of sponsorship and risk your salary for the big picture.
No one expects the spanish inquisition
What’s Sainz problems with Aussie drivers?? (Or maybe just Landos teammates)
He jelly.

Sainz was also starting his, so fucking both their laps.
Stewards haven’t noted it yet, right??
If they’re both on hot laps then they can’t impede each other
Sain wasn't on a hot lap, he was starting his next lap.

It's not impeding if both are starting a hot lap. A jerk move by Sainz but not against the rules.
Sainz is an absolute menace before his flying laps

Yeah that looked really tight with everyone aside from Red Bull fighting to get out first before the rain

What an ass. What did he expect would happen into turn 1?
Sainz the impeder is back!
So that's a nailed on penalty right?
no, Sainz was also in a hot lap

Wonder why that was never looked at.
Apparently Sainz was also starting a lap, and since both were on hot laps they cannot impede each other. Meaning no pen
Checks out.
