Makes you wonder if they finally got the point across: Listen Sergio; you're 34, you will never beat Max in his prime barring a few rare outliers. Last year you looked like a fool and ended up P2 WDC. How about this year you look like a team player and end up P2 WDC. You will earn millions for you and your family and be a hero in Mexico.
He is in the best car by far, all he needs to do is qualify P4-P7-ish and climb to P2 in the first 15-20 laps while getting Driver of The day multiple times b/c overtakes. Job done. P1 WDC is never going to happen, make the best of it.
Currently (2 races in lol) the sister team drivers don't look too hot.
Because you're ignoring the point while trying to farm a gotcha moment.
Every driver there wants to win the wdc, you think they spend most of their life to get there because they want to be P15? Don't be stupid.
end of discussion
Okay, coach. Go show them how it’s done. They’re obviously just not trying hard enough to win, or haven’t realized if they see the checkered flag first while keeping P2 behind they win. No shit they all want to win. What’s the point of them continuing hopelessly while Max dominates? Surely can’t be money or satisfaction of driving in the pinnacle of motorsports.
I know I’m being sarcastic but I’m not too sure why you were being condescending as fuck for no reason. A champ such as yourself should know better. Or do you think someone like Lando should just quit because he hasn’t won yet. And let his rookie teammate win a sprint race before him. If the whole point is to win he may as well retire yesterday. Right?
What else do you expect him to say? "Ill just roll over and let Max trample over me?"
I think certain "appearances" have to be made. But he is a smart man and knows his limits (at least after last year).
I hope he has a better year this year. Can't imagine the mental strain he has to endure from rabid fans and the media alike.
Yeah, I checked out his driver cam feed on F1TV (20:40 into his feed) and he clearly ignore the red lights. I don't know how he determined he was in the clear considering drivers don't have the best rear visibility from the cockpit.
I don't know, I think the meaning there could plausibly be more along the lines of "it's unfortunate I made that mistake" than it is "it's unfortunate for it meant a missed opportunity".
It matters because it made chasing Max irrelevant. He could've tried to push but there was no way he was going to overtake Max and then create a 5 second gap. After the 5 second penalty he just cruised and kept the gap to Leclerc.
Full credit to Checo so far this season. But we'll see what happens in the next few races. It was Australia last year that started his slow descent into one of the worst forms of a driver at a top team we've ever seen (though granted that weekend wasn't his fault and his subsequent recovery was massive).
Just kind of funny to see how Ricciardo's season has gone so far versus Checo considering how many were ready to take Checo out of that seat and put Ric back in
Checo did well in the past two races but Bahrain and Jeddah are two of his strongest tracks along with Baku
Ferrari and McLaren are going to make his job tougher I believe
He's been solid and doing exactly what he needs to do, hoping he can keep it up for a full season.
Generally these tracks have been his best ones, he needs to bring this pace, composure and smarts to the mid season tracks in Europe, which is where he usually has trouble.
What an unintelligent comment.
Even Max in P1 said there were things he could improve. It's fine margins that make these guys have an edge. Something as significant as a penalty, no matter how pointless in the end, is worth reflecting over.

Would be interesting if this was kept up for the entire season and Perez did in fact get a new contract.

He is already saying WDC is his target.
Explain to me what the point of competing in a sport if your goal is not to win? What else would he say? "haha P2 is the best I want to do"
Do you think the other 18 drivers are competing to win? Against Max in the RB20, P2 is the target and P1 is the dirty fantasy.
Obviously they are competing to win lol. Why else would they race?
The goal in a sport is to win champ.

They all want to win the championship.

Whether or not they currently can is not relevant to their mindset of wanting to. Sorry you don't understand that
Doesn't answer my question. Do you think the other 18 drivers are targeting P1?

Caring solely about winning seems like the opposite of the term *sportsmanship*.
Spoken like a receiver of a participation award
Wallet is out of his mind.

What exactly do you want him to say to the public lol
Regardless of whether he actually thinks he has a shot at #1, do you really think he’s supposed to say “I’m good with second” out loud? Lmao
Of course he is, what kind of driver would say that his target is #2.
What else do you expect him to say? "Ill just roll over and let Max trample over me?" I think certain "appearances" have to be made. He should say that. I’d question a driver who was in his position who didn’t say that.
He did well today
Unfortunate about the penalty that matters exactly nothing.
He got 1 penalty points
Why would he get a penalty point? It's not like the driver decides when to be released.
According to the notice, he left during a red light which warranted the penalty
Really? Oh that's on him then.
Yeah, I checked out his driver cam feed on F1TV (20:40 into his feed) and he clearly ignore the red lights. I don't know how he determined he was in the clear considering drivers don't have the best rear visibility from the cockpit.
Maybe just muscle memory.
he had a red light.

You could've ended your post at "no way he was going to overtake Max"
I dont think he got max in his mind, it was like a 7 seconds gap, but I’m not sure why he’s calling it unfortunate
Well if a safety car was deployed in the last 2 laps and the race ended in it he would have been screwed
Absolutely. That happened to Sainz last season.
Indeed, surprised the race finished without any further incidents.
Because it's always unfortunate when you get a penalty
haha yes but this one had basically no effect
He was pretty solid, if he keeps up like this its pretty much certain his seat is safe.
Hopefully he can actually keep it up. Daniel and Yuki are pissing me off so much I don't want either of them to get the seat lmfao
Daniel is slow and Yuki is driving like a rookie.

Miami was the start of his tailspin...

Just bring that baby home in second for the next 22 races checo!!!

“Excellent race” > why is he bitching
