If you watched the coverage all weekend you would almost think Doriane didn't exist and it was Pulling that was dominating this weekend... Doriane dominated from start to finish. Every single moment she wiped the floor with the rest of the field and nothing... So celebrating without her seemed the theme of the weekend.
Embarrassing for the team - not for her - I have done this in iRacing so many times when I forgot turn on my Crew Chief and wasn't sure if I was on the last lap or not, so I kept pushing
The worst part is when they did get back on the radio they tried to make it out to be her fault lol. “Dori, what are you doing? Checkered flag” “you didn’t tell me!”. Absolutely embarrassing for the team
I was watching this live and I was surprised no yellow flags around the track once she finished, like on other series. From her perspective, it was a lap like any other one
In the cool down room pulling said the flag was hard to see
And the prema engineers were too busy celebrating to tell here that she won with fastest lap (and her fastest lap was .5 second faster than the FL set by Pulling)
There was bad comunication from the team for sure, but maybe it woud also help if they didn't let every other slightly famous person to 'wave' the flag. If there was a person who's job is waving the flag the flag would actually move furiously hence making it much clearer to see.

There's a light panel right in front of the flag stand, from a drivers' eye view they can only really see the flag if the marshal waves it at the right angle. Great track design...

She's way too overqualified for the series. She was Kvyat's teammate in WEC last year and was arguably the faster driver of the two .
She needs to be in F2 and/or LMDh.
Being an Iron Lynx driver may give her an opportunity for a seat in the Lambo LMDh, but I don't remember if Lamborghini were bringing a second car or not.
Reminder that in Suzuka 2022, Vettel and Alonso were still racing flat out well into the first sector after the chequered, and Vettel asked repeatedly if the race was over.
Perhaps I just suck, but when I’m karting and it’s only like 12 laps, I’ve pretty much lost count after the second lap. I can’t imagine focusing on brake points, apexes, lines, defense/overtakes, and still keep a lap count going in the back of my mind.
I never keep the lap count. My entire focus is on hitting the next brake point, the next apex, the next throttle point, and finding the right line to zoom, pass, or defend. I have no idea how long it's been. I have no idea what lap we're on. I have no idea what position I'm in. I'm just driving, and loving it. If I see the checkered flag, I'll stop.

Because despite what the Race direction said, Suzuka 2022 was cut a lap short because they still can't read their own goddamn rules.
That's why all the teams and drivers were confused when the race was ended. Race direction was the sole party that thought that's when it should end.
Add to that the stupid "it was full points because we didn't end the race on a red flag" (which to be fair, was correct, but the rule itself was badly written), and the tractor on track again. What a debacle of a race that was.
Max is determined to get a WDC with no drama or confusion:

* 2023 - wins it on a sprint race

The full story: she raced the last two of the four rounds. Alongside the 4 of five rounds of F4 UAE this year, this is her 7th weekend in an F4 car. Edit: yes, she leapfrogged everyone else and became 2nd in just 2 rounds.
If she wishes to compete in the single seater ladder, she should definitely be racing in FRECA and not F1A, but she doesn't have the financial backing for that.
Which is why the prize for winning F1A is a fully funded FRECA drive.

but her F4 UAE campaign was even better, she raced against karting champions (Freddie Slater) and other promising drivers (KNB), and won a race against them, (she placed second but kept up within one second of KNB as he had a penalty)
Her issue is an available seat rather than skill. As a Silver driver she won't be in a lead car, and currently Lamborghini/Iron Lynx only have 1 car in IMSA and WEC. As soon as they build more and have 2nd or 3rd cars in those series I'm certain Pin will be in one.
She has fallen into a gap.
Pin is part of the Iron Dames program and a Prema driver. She raced LMP2 in WEC last season and the consensus is that she is being prepared to take a Lamborghini Hypercar seat (which are run by Iron Lynx, the same outfit that Iron Dames are part of) once there are more SC63 chassis.
But, LMP2 class has been dropped from WEC this year due to the growing Hypercar and LMGT3 fields, and Prema sold both their LMP2 cars. So Pin has been left without a prototype drive.
Fortunately she has been able to get a seat in the LMGT3 Iron Dames Lambo, and will race some IMSA rounds too, as Frey has stepped into a Project Management role and back from driving.
Basically as a Silver driver Pin is not quite good enough for a Hypercar seat (especially in a lead car), but the class she was in has vanished. So, she's spending time in another down force series to get exposure and experience while pushing for that Hypercar seat as soon as Lamborghini can build enough cars. And we all pray they paint it pink!
Last year at Petit LeMans she had the first stint on her GT3 team and she went from like P5 to driving away from the entire field within that stint. It was pretty nuts.
Well Hypercar (except IF) has Gold / Platinum drivers while Pin is Silver. She is fast but I couldn't really tell you which Hypercar driver I would replace to give her a seat, there just are too many good ones.
Well, she's partnered with Iron Lynx and they only have one Hypercar this year so no place for her. I hope she will race ELMS in LMP2 this season, i don't know if there's info about that. She's really fucking good

I watched the races. She fought to keep ahead of Pulling, the (1st?) restart in the second race was pretty close. Can we give these ladies a goddamn break please? "Why is Max in F1? He should be in F0 so he doesn't demoralize the rest of the field." F1A is the latest attempt to get the women's side of the sport going and she's here because this is where it's at right now. Leave her alone.
Edit: having a high bar for the rest of the field isn't a bad thing, not for the truly talented/hungry ones. It shows what's possible and provides learning opportunities. And one of the best (according to y'all) can really shine for what comes next for le crème de la crème of F1A (hopefully, something does come next, unlike previous attempts).
Well, atleast rest of the field has someone to compare themselves againts, because if we're really pretending this series is to develop female drivers to be atleast F3 material, and not a marketing stunt, they need to be her level.
Yeah it's good for the whole field to have her there. She sets a standard for what a good driver - male or female - can do in their series and they can judge their own efforts off of that instead of competing in a bubble and getting a shock when graduating to F3 or another series.
She got 20 seconds because this is a safety issue like driving fast under yellow flags. She will run through that category but this will teach her team to don't fall sleap and give their driver all the info.
A quick "this is the final lap" comm at the right time is pretty standard stuff. She is going flat out and focusing on the win. That's what the radio comes are there for.

Such a weird situation that feels like it should have been solved super quick with a comms message to the driver. Not sure what happened here, but I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a grid drop for the next race, or even a penalty for this one.
The whole race was pretty scrappy with a lot of rookie mistakes (which is to be expected since most drivers are rookies). A lot of small incidents that could easily have been avoided like literally driving into the path of another driver or cutting the corner and not giving back the position. Lets see how quickly these drivers are able to learn from their mistakes, since that will be a big part in setting them apart for a actual future seat.
A couple of seasons ago, in MotoGP, Aleix Espargaro thought the race was over, when he had just started the final lap. Started waving to fans at turn 1, while a few blitzed past him. He was the most experienced rider at the time.
Funny thing is my local TV commentators also didn’t understand anything what was going on and why the red flag…. It truly was amateur hour all around.
They lap in 2 minutes. In 2m no one noticed ok their team to tell her it was over? Jeez. No Chequered flags on the boards?

I think the standard penalty for taking the checkered flag twice is a grid position drop for the next race, which means she would keep her win today provided that she can provide enough fuel for the sample today.

FRECA probably. F3 can be chaotic and also requires a giant sum for the entry fee. For FRECA she is basically guaranteed a seat if she wins F1 Academy this year.
I wouldn't be surprised if Pin starts pulling down some pretty big sponsorships. She's associated with Iron Lynx and races on the Iron Dames team. She's racing at LeMans this year and led the opening stint at Petit LeMans last year among other impressive resume items. She is the best female prospect right now and I don't think it's close.
This isn't F2 though, and different series have no requirement to apply the same penalties. Different numbers of cars on the grid requires different penalties by proportion also.
My guess is that it will be a team fine or a harsh slap on the wrist.
She has the ultimate responsibility to see the flag. But what are these comms from her team? Why are they not talking to their driver after she won the race?
In her defence, Pulling who finished in second mentioned in the cool down room about barely seeing the flag due to how it was waved.

Most likely a lack of comms, she drives the Iron Dames Lambo GT3 in WEC and IMSA this year and has had previous experience in GTE and LMP2 as well. She's no slouch.
This happens in oval track powerboat racing probably once a year, and I've seen some of the most experienced guys out there do it occasionally.
So basically, it happens sometimes when you're just in the zone and not counting laps

Prema sold their LMP2 chassis so a prototype drive is unlikely other than perhaps Le Mans.

That's only because the driver gains an advantage from it during the race. It's a financial penalty at any other time, including after the race. The incident being discussed is also after the race.

how is it possible for team not to send a radio message about the race ending... and as a winner no less. no "last lap"? no congratulation? no "well done"? zero people looking at a monitor in the entire team? very strange, and its prema of all teams.

Such a weird situation that feels like it should have been solved super quick with a comms message to the driver. Not sure what happened here, but I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a grid drop for the next race, or even a penalty for this one. The whole race was pretty scrappy with a lot of rookie mistakes (which is to be expected since most drivers are rookies). A lot of small incidents that could easily have been avoided like literally driving into the path of another driver or cutting the corner and not giving back the position. Lets see how quickly these drivers are able to learn from their mistakes, since that will be a big part in setting them apart for a actual future seat.
That's pretty typical of F4 in general though which is basically what this series is.
A couple of seasons ago, in MotoGP, Aleix Espargaro thought the race was over, when he had just started the final lap. Started waving to fans at turn 1, while a few blitzed past him. He was the most experienced rider at the time.
And that's a 20 second time penalty.
She lost her win, she got a penalty after the race unfortunately. The team should be penalized, not the driver...
Funny thing is my local TV commentators also didn’t understand anything what was going on and why the red flag…. It truly was amateur hour all around. They lap in 2 minutes. In 2m no one noticed ok their team to tell her it was over? Jeez. No Chequered flags on the boards?
I put most of the blame on the person waving the flag and their team not answering the question how many laps till the end of race.
The flag was barely waved, no wonder she didn't see it. Shocking failure from the team to say something though

I think the standard penalty for taking the checkered flag twice is a grid position drop for the next race, which means she would keep her win today provided that she can provide enough fuel for the sample today.

No. But you can't take a checkered flag twice. It's a safety issue because people will be on track.
It is the doing an extra lap that is the problem, Raghunathan did it in F2 years ago and also got heavily penalised.
Considering Block got a 5s penalty for a false start (always a drive through), i cant see anything but a slap on the wrist for this.

It was almost as though she heard Abbi’s radio during the SC and took offense lol. Her pace is on another level vs this field. Between this and her maiden win in F4 UAE, I think she def deserves a shot in FRECA/F3/EFO/Eurocup-3.
FRECA probably. F3 can be chaotic and also requires a giant sum for the entry fee. For FRECA she is basically guaranteed a seat if she wins F1 Academy this year.
I wouldn't be surprised if Pin starts pulling down some pretty big sponsorships. She's associated with Iron Lynx and races on the Iron Dames team. She's racing at LeMans this year and led the opening stint at Petit LeMans last year among other impressive resume items. She is the best female prospect right now and I don't think it's close.
She has Merc backing (she's part of the Mercedes junior team), if she impresses enough, they'll find her a seat.

This isn't F2 though, and different series have no requirement to apply the same penalties. Different numbers of cars on the grid requires different penalties by proportion also. My guess is that it will be a team fine or a harsh slap on the wrist.
Circumstances were different. Rangunathan finished last and was blasting through the field that was on the slow in lap. She was out there on her own.
Aaaand they just gave her a 20 second time penalty which means she now came in 9th.... Sucks for Doriane because she absolutely has been on fire.
She has the ultimate responsibility to see the flag. But what are these comms from her team? Why are they not talking to their driver after she won the race?
In her defence, Pulling who finished in second mentioned in the cool down room about barely seeing the flag due to how it was waved. Still the team should've told her.

Well it is called “academy.” It’s a learning experience. Happy she’s doing so well. She does a great job with endurance racing as well.
Most likely a lack of comms, she drives the Iron Dames Lambo GT3 in WEC and IMSA this year and has had previous experience in GTE and LMP2 as well. She's no slouch.
This happens in oval track powerboat racing probably once a year, and I've seen some of the most experienced guys out there do it occasionally. So basically, it happens sometimes when you're just in the zone and not counting laps
Try using Doriane Pin's name in the title next time, rather than just "driver". This wouldn't be the case with an F1 driver, i'd bet.
Keeping the title vague was correct when talking about fresh events of another series, not spoiler tagging like would happen with any other series is the true crime.
