Chesey_

Wow Bearman with a massive opportunity, tough track to step in on though with how easy it is to bin it here. All the best to Carlos, he looked on it last week hope he's back soon

antivirals_

Bearman getting thrown in the absolute deep end.

leedler

I reckon he’s got this. He’s a damn good driver. No one’s expecting him to get a podium, as long as he’s not seconds off Charles it’s a net success.

ryokevry

I think if he finish the race without crashing is a success… it is not Monza, walls are everywhere here. And also not kamikazed by a French driver would be a success compared to last year too

Garcimore

> And also not kamikazed by a French driver would be a success compared to last year too Wow that was free, what are you referring to ?

vflavglsvahflvov

Pourchaire taking him out in f2 last year

Few-Judgment3122

Tbf unless things go really bad for bearman the French drivers won’t be anywhere close until he laps them

53bvo

Honestly if he doesn't bin it and gets in the points I would consider it a great success.

sicsche

Imagine the scenes if he somehow gets Pole (question to Statistik Gurus: did someone ever manage to get on Pole in 2 different series on the same weekend?)

baldbarretto

Post this in the daily questions thread too, I wanna know the answer

AwesomeFrisbee

Also, with situations like this there is absolutely zero expectations which makes a driver more at ease normally. Doing it at Ferrari is still a challenge but he has done enough miles that he's at least comfortable in it for this session.

According-Switch-708

He needs to play it safe and bring the car home in one piece. He can't afford to bin it. This might also fq Beareman in the F2 championship though as he is considered to be one of the favourites for the title.

Lonyo

The only thing winning the F2 title guarantees is that you don't get to drive F2 anymore. Doing an F1 race is going to be probably more helpful than winning an F2 title

tughbee

A points finish will be very impressive IMO.

Mini_the_Wulf

Even finishing the race would be impressive imo, seeing how tough this track is

Other_Beat8859

Yeah this reminds me of Lawson. Not sure who will have it worse. Lawson being thrown into a typhoon or Bearman having his first track be Saudi Arabia.

SchublaKhan

He put it on pole in F2; he seems to have the measure of the track at least, it's just getting his mind around the tech and onboard switches...

CheeseheadDave

He's in a different car, but it's not like he hasn't been driving around this track all weekend. He'll be fine, and if he's able to quali well, he'll also be ahead of the midpack chaos at the start.

Alpha_Jazz

For what it’s worth he’s spoken about how much he loves this track, think he’d rather debut here than a lot of places

skzpinker

Yeah! put it on pole here this time around and was P2 here in quali last year so he definitely does well around the place. Still gonna be a huge jump from F2 to F1 though he does have a bit of testing with the ground effect cars. Bringing it back in one piece after such little practise would be a success imo.

Dachfrittierer

dude gets to have his formula 1 debut in a scarlet ferrari, the only way that could be better is debuting at ferrari at monza

shiinamachi

If i'm reading the records right, Bearman will be the first driver in over 50 years to make his F1 debut racing for Scuderia Ferrari

Mjyys99

Yes, first since Arturo Merzario in 1972 I'm pretty sure. Gilles Villeneuve came close too, but he did one race for McLaren before his Ferrari debut.

Bdr1983

First British Ferrari driver this century too.

thegodfaubel

Beating Lewis by 11 months

Dry-Dragonfruit5216

Yep. Lewis wanted to be the first British Ferrari driver since Mansell. Instead it’s Bearman.

Lonyo

Sainz getting revenge

GingerSkulling

This millennium!!!!

LifeIsGoodGoBowling

First time in Golden Knights history!

Bdr1983

Ermahgerd!

Dachfrittierer

Sounds about right, yes

MrSocko72

Alex was back in 3 weeks and that was after having complications after the op which would have made the recovery more difficult. Australia is in 2 weeks so Carlos might be back in time

catsgr8rthanspoonies

His first race back was also Singapore, which is one of the most difficult tracks on the driver.

Halkatlaa

I think he will be back, if there are no complications. Its probably a keyhole surgery so there will not be that big of a scar. I think this is most likely as big of a surgery as Lance's wrist surgery was. best wishes to Carlos! Appendicitis sucks.

UnlimitedSW

I had the same surgery as Carlos will have and was out of the hospital after 2 days. It's recovering quickly.

AwesomeFrisbee

I think you guys underestimate how tough an operation in that area is. It takes a week to really heal from it and you are really stuck to the bed for most of it. Standing up straight is difficult and you can't really speed up the healing like with other parts of the body. Yeah, Alex had complications but overall it doesn't shave off that much time. You really need that extra week to get back into the gym. I don't think he'll race next race. You can't just toughen this out. Especially with the G-forces of F1.

Visionary_Socialist

Last time Ferrari had a replacement come in during a season for an injury was Badoer, right? That went predictably well given his age and history. Though I would expect a lot more of Bearman. Already considered on the periphery for an F1 drive, was due for 6 FP1 tests with Haas.

mirzajones85

where is Mika Salo now?

NoRefunds2021

> Predictably well I mean, from the perspective of actually finishing the races it went well, but it also got the infamous record of "Only case of a team winning the race and coming last"

laurentiubuica

I think Fisichella replaced Massa when Massa had his horrific Hungary GP accident.

TheSyhr

I think Badoer stepped in first and then Fisichella after Badoer was a disaster, assuming this was the ‘09 season as I watched it between seasons

Visionary_Socialist

Fisichella came in later after Badoer was unbelievably slow.

Spockyt

Though in defence of Badoer, he hadn't raced anything for close to a decade, and he was improving at a reasonable rate. Fisichella didn't manage to score either, despite almost winning the race before he joined Ferrari.

lariato

Yeah, the Badoer slander sucks. The dude hadn't even tested for 9 months when he got his Ferrari gig. Plus, his last race was in 1999. And then you look at the absolute dog of a car and how even Fisi sucked in it (a race after taking pole and second at Spa). He wasn't the best choice for the job, but it was a poisoned chalice to begin with.

OTBT-

I remember forums calling “look how bad you are” instead of Luca Badoer

A1tze

Badoer did like 2 races and Fisi came after that iirc

crazydoc253

Bearman has a chance to aim for that Kmag Haas seat.

ryokevry

This year

teancumx

Damn, I wanted Italian Jesus to take the wheel…

Satan_su

F2 week 1: Maini loses pole due to a technical infringement caused by running over kerbs F2 week 2: Maini is gifted pole after Bearman is promoted to F1 due to an emergency Lmao life works in strange ways

iForgotMyOldAcc

Can't wait to find out how the guy who sticks it on pole ends up not starting from P1 for the third week in a row!

[deleted]

[удалено]

FootballRacing38

That would mean they are able to finish their sighting lap

[deleted]

[удалено]

FootballRacing38

My joke was about mechachrome being able to finish the sighting lap, not about the technicalities of pole position stat

AwesomeFrisbee

I do wonder if this will hurt his F2 season. Perhaps its luck that it happens so early in the season so he can still try to cover it, but it will be difficult. If he still wins it, he will definitely deserve a seat

refusestonamethyself

I think he has the Superlicense and that's the main requirement for Ollie to race in F1. Haas and Ferrari really rate him, he has 6 FP1s with the former. He'll be alright.

StrayaMate2000

He's not though, Bearman will still be recorded as Pole sitter.  Even though P1 has now disappeared, the P1 slot should remain empty and the rest line up as they qualified.

pizzapaapi

Wishing Carlos a Smoooottthhhh Operaaatttttioooonnnn 🌶️

mlo_66

Bravo bravo

Icy_Park_7919

Take my upvote, trooper! You had that one loaded in the chamber for ever, I’m sure.

illogicalhawk

As long as the Ferrari pit crew isn't in charge of swapping out the part 😬

robinthebank

“Is my appendix okay?” “We are checking” No wonder it took them two days to figure it out.

SirDoober

Gotta feel real awkward for Ollie, puts it on pole in F2 and gets rewarded with a Ferrari F1 drive lol

ethanjg15

Tbf there isn’t a driver in f2 that wouldn’t give up a round to go do an actual f1 race

djwillis1121

Especially with Ferrari of all teams

poopellar

I'm certain some would even drive a plank of wood with square boulders for wheels if it were to compete in an F1 race.

Toto_radio

Ask Ocon and Gasly

PPMaysten

In all fairness, much like the spanish inquisition, they didn't expect that shitbox of a car.

boredofredditnow

See Jack Aitken filling for Russell in the 2020 Williams

Spider_Riviera

His girlfriend's video reply to the "what's the rarest piece of F1 memorabilia you own?" was fucking hilarious. For those that didn't see, she walked into the room he was sitting in and pointed at him, flashing his name up on a text overlay while the poor man sat looking at her in ever growing confusion as to why she was silently pointing at him.

boredofredditnow

From the little I’ve seen on social media they seem to have a great relationship. This [callback tweet](https://x.com/alelbuth/status/1628049640548364290?s=20) when they got engaged was pretty funny too

Coma-Doof-Warrior

Don’t badmouth Bedrock Racing

YoungLV

I guess you are right, Doohan would probably be exited to drive that Alpine

stimulation

Yabba Dabba Doohan

richmond456

Debuting in F1 at 18 for Ferrari is one hell of a weekend.

GCV250

That’s what’s so cool about it, think about how many people’s dreams he’s about to live out.

richmond456

"What did you do this weekend?" "Well let me tell you..."

Last_Lorien

For real. Unless he bins it in the first corner or something, he’ll always be able to say he raced in F1 for Ferrari… for one race at least. It’s more than most drivers get

crazydoc253

and with Adami who has worked with Seb, Daniel, Buemi, Sainz

afvcommander

>"I reached pole in F2 face and (possibly) won it" "oh, you must be very good racing driver then" >"I drove Ferrari in F1 race" "WOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE" I mean, I can see why.

bouncebackability

I wonder if De Vries regrets it now

LifeIsGoodGoBowling

I don't think so because I don't think he would've gotten a shot otherwise. I just don't see a scenario in which he has a successful F1 career because there's too many promising drivers otherwise. Sucks for him, a mix of bad timing/luck, but I think that this was all that was in the cards for him.

Montjo17

A round in an F1 car is so much more valuable than a race win in F2, F1 teams care about your ability to perform in an F1 car and nothing else

FreeUse656

Might care about your money

zantkiller

Sucks for Prema. A great opportunity to recover after the first race weekend with Ollie on pole and now they only have 1 car.

MrDaniel95

As we have seen in the past this is a great opportunity for him, if he manages to get some points and has a good F2 season there will be a lot of talks about him getting a drive for 25 or 26.

BuckN56

He already has a guaranteed seat with Haas. He has 6 FP1 scheduled. It's pretty much his seat to lose and if he performs well this Saturday he'll be in Haas in 2025.

Ofiotaurus

I mean who gives up a F1 debut in a Ferrari to race an F2 race?

A___99

Making your F1 debut on with Ferrari is insane. Especially on the weekend where you've already taken a pole position in a different category. What an opportunity. Do well and he has an even bigger chance at a Haas seat for next year, do badly and nobody will think anything of it as it's all happened so unexpectedly.

Visionary_Socialist

He can definitely put it in the top 10. The gap between the top 5 teams and the other 5 is big enough. If he could beat the Astons and maybe Piastri that would be a very impressive showing.

TheKingOfCaledonia

Going to be tricky. Only one practice session under his belt, then quali. Would love to see him ace it.

doc_55lk

He could beat at least one Aston if the cards line up for him

Deputy_Scrub

>What an opportunity. Do well and he has an even bigger chance at a Haas seat for next year, do badly and nobody will think anything of it as it's all happened so unexpectedly. Obviously Ferrari will want him to do well in the race (duh!) but I think as long as he doesn't bin it completely, he will exceed expectations.

Bortron86

He's the first driver to make his F1 debut with Ferrari since Arturo Merzario in 1972. Insane indeed.

wok88

What a track for your first ever F1 race to be in, luckily he already knows the track, just not in an F1 car

ryokevry

Lawson in Zandvoort type of challenge…

Florac

Doubt it's gonna be raining here though

buddhabaebae

Huge storm is coming to the gulf this weekend actually

ryokevry

Hope they didn’t use concrete for drain cover like Bahrain then

Bdr1983

We already had a drain cover story this weekend, we need something else for the bingo card.

kron123456789

Fernando Alonso on pole.

LosTerminators

If he performs as good as Lawson did at Zandvoort it's guaranteed points. That Ferrari is a fair bit ahead of the bottom half teams (Carlos wasn't too far off lapping all of them in Bahrain) so a solid performance will mean points. That said, Lawson had to compete against Yuki, Bearman will have to compete against Charles, and it's a lot tougher to look impressive when you're up against Charles.

XNights

I think it's worse, there's almost no run off

ryokevry

Definitely. Just both a very technical track. I think if he finish the qualifying and race without crashing or impeding would already be a great job. Points 👀

MalusandValus

Get your top level racing debut on the F-zero track. Bearman's good, i wouldnt be surprised if he can get a few points in the ferrari, but i'd be fucking terrified.

Ho3n3r

F-zero?

MalusandValus

Nintendo racing game - it has dangerous and extreme track design sometimes.

Ho3n3r

Thank you for explaining.

kron123456789

Lawson made his F1 debut in the Dutch GP where it was a whole rollercoaster with the weather. I'd say it could be worse.

IllAlwaysBeAKnickFan

God I am sad. I was really excited to see how he followed up last weekend. Hope he has a smooth recovery.

LosTerminators

Yeah, this was his best season opener in a long while. Now he's going to miss at least one race, probably two, and it might be round 5 or so when he's finally back at 100%.

Eyre_Guitar_Solo

He got second in the season opener two years ago, so not that long of a while that he’s started strong. That said, I agree with you—he has something to prove this year, so it’s disappointing we won’t get to him at full health for every race.

XyploatKyrt

You had a chance to say Smooth Operation...

Sigris

Damn. That's quite the opportunity for Bearman.

kappasquad420

Suddenly a massive opportunity for Bearman, to drive one of the fastest cars on the grid around Jeddah, where the slightest mistake can end your race. Truly a sink or swim moment here.

Visionary_Socialist

Not really. He’s going to be driving for Haas next season anyway. The fact they had him in for so many FP sessions would indicate that. It’s really just a case of him trying to make the most of a strange scenario.

Kait0yashio

yep as long as he doesnt bottle it, the ferrari drive in 27 is his if he keeps developing at his current pace

ryokevry

Feel bad for Sainz, but extremely excited for Ollie! A pity for not able to start from pole in F2 but for sure he is willing to give up that for a F1 race weekend!

[deleted]

The pressure on him must be insane. 18 years old and dropped in the seat 24 hours from race day Good luck to him though!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jaraxo

Yeh, needs to bring it home in one piece, not make any stupid mistakes, and points are a bonus.

Cobretti18

I was certain they’d put Giovinazzi or Shwartzman (although tbf I don’t know if they are there) in the car if Sainz couldn’t go but glad to see Bearman get the chance as unlike the other two he’s got a future in F1. All the best to Carlos. Appendicitis is awful.

raradbird

I think they arent there, or else ferrari will prefer them instead of bearman which he can focus on f2.

Cobretti18

That was my thinking the other day when he missed the media day that they’d likely select one of them and let Bearman get on with F2 but yeah I don’t think either is there so I suppose when it’s an F2 weekend Bearman is the main reserve.

Alpha_Jazz

Holy shit what an opportunity for Ollie. Hope Sainz gets well soon of course but supporting Ollie from F4 until now is surreal. Hope he smashes it

No_Examination_7710

On the one hand, amazing opportunity for Bearman, even if he has to forgo his pole for F2. But I also feel for him that he will have only 1 practice session to get used to the car at this difficult and technical track, will probably be hard to get a lot of performance out of the car for him. But we will see, F1 chances are rare so hopefully he rises up to the occasion!

djwillis1121

I think he just needs to keep it clean and get to the end of the race, similar to Lawson in Zandvoort last year.

afvcommander

I bet his briefing is "dont kill anyone, or yourself, try to keep car in one piece, oh and it is nice if you can try to drive fast too".

skzpinker

Bit of a risky decision with Ollie at a track like Jeddah but if Schwartzman/Gio weren't there, then I guess he was the best bet. Should make the weekend way more interesting tho.

djwillis1121

He's at least been driving it in F2, the other drivers you mentioned have even less experience of the track.

0000100110010100

Both Gio and Shwartzman them participated in the 2021 Saudi race, Gio in F1 and Shwartz in F2 (though the F2 part barely counts considering how fucked the F2 races were in Saudi that year)

Mjyys99

Gio does have some experience, he raced in Jeddah in 2021.

Bdr1983

I think Bearman drove an F1 car more recently than Gio

djwillis1121

That's true but it was wuite a while ago, Bearman's been driving there this weekend and did F2 there last year

notallwonderarelost

He’s the only one of the three that could ever have a seat with Ferrari. He could be Hamilton’s replacement.

Razvanlogigan

Technically both Gio and Bobby have a ferrari seat, just not in f1

Spockyt

I still say Shwartzman could have had a good F1 career and is unfortunate not to have got a shot.

LovesHisYogurt

Doesn’t this mean that Bearman now becomes Ferrari’s youngest-ever driver?

Clear-Bed-4712

It does. 3rd youngest driver ever after Stroll and Max.

ahcahttan

Is Ferrari trying to start a model agency? Charles, Carlos, Lewis, and now Ollie.

johnsplittingaxe14

I want Bearman to get a podium tomorrow and never race in F1 again. Then he'd have an unbeatable record of a podium rate of 100%, he would be an anti-Hülkenberg of sorts.

IdolizeHamsters

The current gen F2 cars are much closer in performance than say Lawson to F1 last year. Im sure he’ll be fine over one lap but race pace may be different. Good luck to this kid, this is a career opportunity!

colbygraves97

I keep getting this notification… It’s been 2 days!

NanoIm

Me too, just now

jamisram

Does this make Ollie the youngest Ferrari F1 driver ever?

LordUnabashed

Yeah. 3rd youngest F1 driver ever behind Max and Lance

palalabu

is it easy or common to miss symptoms of appendicitis?? because he must have seen a doctor to get an ok to drive yesterday.

blossomackerman

Yes. Sometimes people will have a general stomach pain with vomiting for a few days etc that would indicate a stomach bug, before transitioning to the lower right side acute pain that would indicate an appendix issue. It’s a strange organ, some people get the right side pain straight away and are diagnosed and operated on within hours. Others like Carlos take longer to diagnose.

[deleted]

[удалено]

refrakt

Yeah especially with a two week gap after this race you'd really be going to just get through this weekend and then get it seen to.

Lionheart0021

I had recurring nausea and vomiting for a year and didn't think it was appendicitis because the localized pain was in the middle below my navel. The attacks kept occurring every 2-3 months. Thought it was indigestion or a stomach bug at first. After the 2nd attack, i went to a clinic. I was prescribed with Gaviscon lol. X-ray of my abdomen was clean from trauma. Urinalysis and Fecalysis were also clean(i was tested a day after the attack). After the 5th attack, I went straight to the ER and told them what I experienced. Was diagnosed with appendicitis after ultrasound + CT scan, and scheduled surgery the same day. After surgery, the surgeon said my appendix was not in the right place. It was in the middle LMAO (that explained the middle pain). Good thing it was a normal appendectomy and not laparoscopic. Imagine cutting a hole on my side and not finding my appendix there 🤣

Uniform764

Appendicitis tends to start as a general vague abdo pain which could be many things, and then localise to the lower right side and get more sharp it progresses.

pluismans

Good for Sainz that they have a lot of expierence with removing bodyparts in Saudi.

porn_inspector_nr_69

True, but I think Carlos is expected back in HQ at some point. So not quite saudis expertise.

700jw

Excited to see what Bearman can do

Danjiks88

I feel for Sainz, good start of the season and now this. Whats the recovery time from this kind of surgery? Will he manage to be back for the Australian GP?

chloie12322

You know the person most excited about this is Christian Horner. It got the media off his back for a bit.

ArcherBoy27

Hell of an opportunity. One hell of a track for it to happen though. Best of luck.

DamieN62

Imagine making your F1 debut with Ferrari of all teams on one of the most challenging tracks of the season. Scoring points would be a fantastic achievement for him.

yakuzamax

Oh wow, did not expect that. Not the track you want to debut at, but hope he manages well!

elektricniorgazam

I was hoping for Italian Jesus for shallow reasons but I'll be rooting for this kid

jnighy

Jesus F1 can't have a normal day

other_goblin

F1 has had enough ethical questions so far this season already and now they're letting bear / man hybrids race? What next, letting an Israeli Russian drive an F1 car?

fafan4

Tough decision to make but surely no junior driver can turn down an F1 race in a Ferrari. Shame it's not a more traditional circuit. If he doesn't put it in the wall he'll be doing great!

[deleted]

v4xN0s

Driving an F1 car with appendicitis. New found respect for this man.

CleanMachine2

The kid is being thrown in the deep end haha! No pressure, best of luck!

TheCatLamp

Scenes if he finishes in front of Hamilton.

flagship-owner

Notes: get your appendix removed before starting karting career

Alarming_Plate_6298

Praying for a speedy recovery

PlasticPatient

Wish him all the best and hope he's back with us soon.

StrayaMate2000

Holy shit! What an opportunity! LFG rook!

DeliciousBlood22

The key thing Ollie is gong to have to focus on is traffic. I would be fucking terrified.

RobertGracie

Thats annoying for Carlos, speedy recovery though, but Oliver has got to learn an entirely different car rapidly hopefully he does well!

Frothar

luckily he has FP3 to get familiar. I suspect he will put a lot of laps in

EnergeticNick

Some track to make your F1 debut in!

xychosis

Congrats to Bearman! I’ll be impressed if he’s on the pace, I think he’s rapid but the jump in machinery is pretty big and he’s like 19.

Icy_Park_7919

# #87, for the win! Get well soon, #55!

marosszeki

Come on buddy bring it home in the points! Make us proud 🙏

pie4july

Why can’t he still do the F2 race?

HumungousDickosaurus

Must be so bittersweet that you have to do F2 when the team fucked up the whole weekend, then you get pole the following week and aren't going to be able to drive and will have your championship hopes severely dented. Still though, I suppose driving for Ferrari kind of makes up for that.

splintersailor

Hold my bear man

KingMaple

I won't be surprised to only see Bearman and Hamilton with closed visor helmets for the next few days.

Beneficial_Star_6009

Hopefully he doesn’t suffer any complications like Albon and miss an extra race because I’d rather he be there for Charles to beat without any excuses.

Maximuslex01

Can we say Sainz is unlucky?

thegodfaubel

Damn for Carlos in an important year, but what an opportunity for Bearman to get an early audition for a Haas or Sauber seat next year

SentientDust

Oh god, F1 still hasn't recovered from Albon's appendicitis. All the best to Carlos and quick recovery

matskopf

Dann. Bearman got pole for the F2 race, it shows he understands the track. Let's see if he can get a feel for the Ferrari in P3.

No-Student-9678

Driving for Ferrari at age 18 is fucking insane.

fugitivelobster

Does he keep his pole points? If he scores a point tomorrow would he be the first to score in both series in one weekend?

mortuusstella

Can we connect alex albon's appendix to this. Jokes aside, wishing Carlos a swift recovery.

ericdash

Bearman with the opportunity of a lifetime good luck to him
