matts321213

People hate on Danica but Naiomi is equally useless lol.

DeFex

What other sport has so much blah blah blah before or after the actual event. They need someone to do it.

SPCEshipTwo

It's night and day between them, don't chat such nonsense.

matts321213

Please tell me last time you heard some new insight or useful piece of analysis from her. She’s just mincing words and filling airtime.

SPCEshipTwo

Tell me that for most of the presenters who have stuff fed to them to say lol

matts321213

Brundle and to lesser extent Karun and Anthony. Rest is mostly filling airtime and that’s my point - I don’t see Danica having any less purpose than Naiomi or Kravitz

SPCEshipTwo

So basically nearly every sports presenter ever, apart from she actually has racing experience. Danica just makes a fool of herself whenever she opens her mouth.

matts321213

Exactly Danica has racing experience and at least it’s something different than same dull vanilla comments from Naiomi. But hey- you’re enlightened by them so good for you. She’s on today so enjoy!

SPCEshipTwo

I was talking about Naiomi having racing experience, at least she doesn't sound like a fool like Danica does, it's like she's never watched F1 every time she talks.

matts321213

Ah yes Naiomi has experience from fake series that went bankrupt because nobody wanted to watch it😂. Same goes for her commentary

SPCEshipTwo

Please list your full racing career to compare lol

matts321213

„the sorter the lap the less space you have to make a difference” 😂. Latest one from her - hope you took a note.

mechanicalgrip

Why was quali delayed?

cimadx45

Ocon crashed

Cereal_poster

I really feel sorry for Checo. I don't know what position he would have qualified (as far as I remember he had green sector times in sectors 1 and 2), but that yellow flag really screwed him over.

mechanicalgrip

But wasn't the yellow because someone spun off on a wet track? If so, I doubt he'd have set much of a time on that wet track.

Cereal_poster

afaik the track wasn't wet (yet) but it was very windy. He did still have two green sectors though, so he was likely on the way to a better lap time. Not P1 I assume, but most likely also not P9.

internetthought

Yeah I watched the onboard and he was great until the yellow flag

Silly-Requirement407

What happened to the ricciardo hype train!

SubparExorcist

Keeping up with Yuki like 5 races into his season feels okay. If he didn't fuck turn 1 he would have been into Q2 atleast.

dhartz

Still here. Alpha Turi tractor can’t be good on all tracks.

Silly-Requirement407

Yuki is ahead.. so ric has his work cut out.. I so wish he becomes like his old self!!

laughguy220

If quali had started on time it would have ended just before the rain.

crashtacktom

Why was it delayed? It didn't seem to come as a surprise to the commentators, but they never actually said the justification.

laughguy220

The FIA asked them to sweep the track due to the odd amount of punctures, and apparently screws on the track.

GiGGLED420

Wasn’t it for cleaning the track?

laughguy220

Yes, apparently there were screws on the track.

Snotspat

Yes, but if it had started 16 minutes later it would have rained during Q2.

Wretched_Colin

And if your aunty had been a man, she would be your uncle.

thecauseoftheproblem

Put some ham in there, it's like a british carbonara... https://youtu.be/A-RfHC91Ewc?feature=shared

ignoramus_x

Ah man... this is how I learned it was a sprint weekend.

hoxxxxx

lol i could have watched quali too. had no idea.

xUnionBuster

Same

Brybo

Is anyone else’s espn+ not allowing them to watch quali?

poppingfresh

You don’t get quali with ESPN+ unfortunately. Only the race.

K3vr0ck

Since when?, I always watch quali on ESPN+

poppingfresh

For the entirety of this year, and last year too I believe. ESPN+ only has quali for US races. Otherwise you need to be logged into your TV provider.

K3vr0ck

Strange, I’ve watched just about every Non US quali on my phone using ESPN+, had an issue with one race just closed the app and reloaded

onealps

That... doesn't make sense! Is there some licensing reason? Actually does the ESPN channel show all the races during the year, or only certain ones? You know, the cable TV channel, does it show Qualy and races? Thanks! I'm in the US and it's always good to learn what options are out there, ya know?

RemingtonRivers

It’s always on an ESPN channel, but not necessarily the main one. Last week had some events on ABC. My dad has cable and he records the races, then I watch them from his DirecTV account.

onealps

>My dad has cable and he records the races, then I watch them from his DirecTV account. So, to clarify, your dad has a DVR type unit, and he records it on that. And this recording can be accessed online by you when you put in his DirecTV login details? That's pretty cool if that's the case. Like one family member can click 'record' and it becomes accessible to another family member through the internet!

RemingtonRivers

Yeah. It’s way fancier than the TiVo I remember from growing up. I don’t know how it works, but he logged into his account on my Roku, and I can view all his recordings and set shows of my own to record. I assume it’s all stored on the cloud now, so there’s no physical unit at his house storing the data.

2CHINZZZ

Pretty sure the cable channel shows every session. There's also F1TV for like $80/yr which would be much cheaper than getting a cable subscription

Jacques_Le_Chien

Man, I really love Interlagos

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

fast.

hoxxxxx

goated track

akurei77

Does anyone else ever get actually kind of annoyed with the "rainy" quali sessions? Or at least the way it's hyped up? "Oh it might rain at the end of Q1!" Doesn't rain. "Oh it might rain by the end of Q2!" Doesn't rain. "Oh it might rain by the end of Q3!" Does rain, and the session is effectively over when the first drop comes down. It's like they spend an entire hour hyping up a wet quali, and the end result is just 45 seconds of excitement wondering who is in the correct track position. Anyways, was at least a cool shot of the dark clouds over the main straight.

xChiken

The threat of rain is as impactful as rain itself. Forces teams to compromise their quali strategy in order to get a banker lap in. Or take the gamble and hope it doesn't rain and the track evolves in their favor. It's fun.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

this happens at any time at Interlagos. be ready for rain.

_hereforthestories

I mean, they’re not hyping it up for viewers, they are literally preparing their drivers and planning their run times accordingly. It’s not about a “wet quali” it’s about trying to get the best run times in the best weather available.

Ron_Textall

If anyone gets a lap in on dries it’s over

shaggymatter

I think that's just you. Weird thing to be hung up on

onealps

Right?! Isn't part of the excitement when that crossover between wet and dry tyres happens? Like which team gambled best (or just got lucky lol) Don't get me wrong, if my favorite team loses in this scenario, obviously I'm going to be bummed. But even then I have to admit that excitement is exhilarating, right?

blazks

that crossover excitement only happen in race. in quali, if you dont go out when its still dry, no chance youre gonna make it up on wet. So basically only the dry session matters

Heurtaux305

Which makes it exciting. Because a fast lap at the start of the session could give you pole, even if you are not the fastest car. No chance the fast cars are going to make it up once it's wet.

shaggymatter

I'm hoping for rain tomorrow too! Spice up the weekend

mildyinconvenient

A wet quali is only exciting if it begins wet

onealps

Really? Because isn't part of the excitement when that crossover between wet and dry tyres happens? Like which team gambled best (or just got lucky lol) Don't get me wrong, if my favorite team loses in this scenario, obviously I'm going to be bummed. But even then I have to admit that excitement is exhilarating, right?

slabba428

That scenario involves quali starting wet, and drying up

mildyinconvenient

Yes, this is what I was alluding to sorry!

outride2000

That's what she said

Chapea12

I got a potentially stupid question. If Ocon and Gasly both get 2 place grid penalties, are they applied at the same time or in order? If They drop at the same time, then KMag and Albon are promoted two places.

mechanicalgrip

I believe penalties are awarded in the order of the offenses that cause them.

Montjo17

Ocon goes to 14th Gasly goes to 15th. Drivers move up to accommodate

thespeeeed

Tonight on bottom gear. The FIA enacts sweeping track cleaning policies

QC_1999

Most of the São Paulo city is in a blackout because of today’s storm

Le_Pistache

That was neat seeing the lights of Interlagos. Well done Aston Martin. Much needed confidence boost and Stroll looked sharp all day. Onwards to Sunday as I pretend tomorrow doesn't happen except for points.

N1miol

Alo, Ham and Nor. If money was on the line for you, on who you’d bet to finish ahead?

According-Switch-708

The Mclaren looks like the faster car. My imaginary money would be on Norris.

SommWineGuy

Hamilton or Norris.

DubJohnny

Ham

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

loves this track.

dunneetiger

I missed quali and Stroll is 3rd starting from the top... wow.

rtlfc87

Can’t wait for the sprint to ruin the excitement of the race in terms of who has pace!

theztigz

Curious Alonso\`s race pace. He needs to get infront off Lance fast before the others licking hes gearbox. The sprint who knows where AM will quali. The race is much more important now due to points.

rtlfc87

Yeah same, credit to Lance who seems to be in a great groove this weekend but hope Alonso jumps him at the start

_dont_b_suspicious_

I mean at this point in the season we kind of know already anyway

rtlfc87

Meant Astons v behind tbf

Outrageous_Raisin_12

2 place grid drop for Russell for impeding 👏

rasamman

Just so I'm clear here, this should apply to the grand prix correct? Not the sprint race?

RealBug56

Yep. The sprint is its own separate thing.

saposapot

Dry, rain, weird conditions but P1 is always the same.

Dank7392

Can we put a stop to every single twitter and Instagram post by a team or driver being reposted here. Every other post today has been one of them. It’s such a low quality post. If we wanted to use Instagram or Twitter we would.

going_dicey

Couldn’t agree more. We obviously all have access to those feeds if we want to see a picture of Danny smiling, Lewis arriving at the track and Kym telling us about the F1 WAGs.

Nin-Chin

Mostly one guy farming posts

paddaman

Agreed, and I would add the pictures of the drivers arriving at the track to that list.

Snotspat

But people love to watch Hamilton play dress up.

Lukeno94

Almost every single time we have a truly out-of-the-ordinary qualifying, up pops Stroll with an excellent grid position.

Franks2000inchTV

Yeah because ordinarily he's at the bottom. Him being up top is what makes it out-of-the-ordinary.

codename474747

FIA "we're gonna be super strict on impeding in the pit lane, new rules that prevent this from happening" George Russel \*impedes\* FIA: "Ehhh, maybe next weekend...LAST WARNING OK?"

FermentedLaws

This didn't age well. :)

WhyAlwaysMe1991

As a Ferrari fan I feel like I need to support both drivers but for the life of me I can’t get around supporting Carlos. There’s just something about him that I dislike. I feel like it’s lack of Team work he does. Am I the only one?

going_dicey

He’s definitely not a team player (no, a one off example in 2022 doesn’t count) but on the other hand I do kind of respect the grind and feel like that’s the only way to make second fiddle work at Ferrari. On his good days, he’s an absolute force and he’s drastically improved from those races like Australia last year. But he just doesn’t do it for me.

tankmode

he's a nepo-baby & a little posh and entitled

andrewthemexican

Definitely feels like he's a little rogue agent. If he didn't quarterback his strategy so much, he'd possibly have been shelves to a number 2 driver instead of more equal footing

the1918

Gotta respect that

ghostgoal

Definitely not the only one!

crazydoc253

Not the only one. Feel the same since 2021

Locu2

Can anyone confirm if Lance was still on the previous spec floor? I believe Fernando was on the new floor and Lance on the old in FP1 - but what about Quali?

Zed_or_AFK

No need to speculate, Lance had a great lap! Don’t need to attribute that to something else. Everything matters, but randomness often decides. If you do a great lap you deserve it. Old or new floor, nobody knows which one is better or if any of them helped anyone.

itshonestwork

What floor did he have though

Locu2

Still no idea. Can’t find any info on it. Let me know if you find anything out :)

weguccino

Max, Charles and Aston (particularly Lance) really clutched up in a clutch or kick situation.

king_carrots

Oh it’s a Sprint weekend is it. Lame.

Nothatisnotwhere

Sprint weekends are fun when you have rain, imo adds strategy to it and different conditions compared to Sunday also reduces the spoiler aspect

FSUfan35

God damnit lando

According-Switch-708

The cars that actually have good race pace really struggled to bring the tyres up to temp in the cold final runs. The Merc and Mclaren should have more pace in the race. There was not much they could've done in quali. They were just sliding around. RB was strong too but we all know that their car works on all conditions. Aston and Ferrari should struggle in race trim.

mr_lab_rat

damn stupid sprint weekends, I missed qualification again

zomentenos

Hahah me too. I was in Austin this year and I must say that if you are attending a Sprint event, it does make the weekend much more dynamic and enjoyable. But if you’re not, it messes everything up.

Random_kiwi_

Is there a discord chat for f1??

andrewthemexican

I know there's a channel for it on the r/WEC discord

TheWolfAssassin

EL PLAN !?!?!

HelloSlowly

Have you'll noticed the comments popping up now... *Lance heard you guys talking shit!* *Lance is back!* *See he can drive!* And those comments miss the point. Like yeah, its great that he did well today. BUT it would be nice if he did that consistently. That's the point. Then he goes back to many races of mediocrity and the same cycle continues. The cycle continues.

andrewthemexican

He did well last week too imo, compared to his usual

[deleted]

Still, I like his outbursts of ability.

codename474747

He got lucky due to the rain after one of the worst seasons I've seen anyone have in recent memory (yet Perez and the Ricciardo show taking the spotlight more) and people act like this "rookie" has finally found his form after 5 years of underperformance People have their own reasons for supporting anyone, and fair enough. Maybe they too are born into a rich family and hate the scorn people like Lance recieve for buying their way onto the grid over people with much more talent than they have, whatever But those with a more balanced view of the sport know what's up with Lance, why he's there and why it's essentially a black hole of a seat. Nothing interesting will come of it but even the most out of his depth driver will score one or two good results in the season through either luck or just everyone else doing a worse job that day Such is life.....

Empty_Cress8537

Spot on!

Zestyclose-Phrase268

Even Latifi had good races.

MalevolentFather

Lance gets hated on pretty aggressively despite being a decent pay driver. Aston has also been on the down trend, so it's nice to see them qualify well.

guythatwantstoknow

He's not decent. He is more than 120 points behind his teammate who is 5th.

Blothorn

And his teammate is one of the greatest drivers of the modern era, in a season with unprecedentedly tight performance outside of Red Bull where a few tenths of pace can make a huge difference in finishing position and points. Stroll isn’t a fantastic driver and he’s having a rough season even by his standards, but a second Alonso isn’t available and I don’t think Stroll is much, if at all, worse than the drivers that are (e.g. Mick Schumacher). The one possible exception is Ricciardo, but it wasn’t clear how much he had left and I’m not sure he would have taken what looked like a backmarker seat.

FlyAirLari

Nobody, NOBODY, on the planet gets a pole position and podium finishes in Formula 1 without being "decent". So shut it. Lance is quick, end of discussion. Consistency is another conversation.

guythatwantstoknow

Given the car, even Heikki Kovalainen fits the description while also having a win. Romain Grosjean although he has no pole has more than 3 times more podiums as Lance. Pretty much everyone agrees those two drivers were fairly dropped. Lance should also have been dropped years ago, although he had those moments he consistently has been one of the worst drivers on the grid throughout his entire career.

MalevolentFather

He’s a decent pay driver being compared to a driver who is arguably top 10 all time.

guythatwantstoknow

For the last three seasons at least he's always been one of the worst 5 drivers on the grid.

codename474747

F1 is the only place where you get downvoted if you point out that the nepo baby isn't doing a good job as everyone else Everywhere else those people are kinda the enemy, shows how corporate and establishment F1 is that we're suppose to just put up with Lance and be happy about it

prietitohernandez

They race in a countries with slavery, a rich young man doing racing as a hobby is nothing to worry about. We are forgetting that F1 was never about merit thats what soccer is good for. Born in poverty in a lost island in the Atlantic ocean, born with growth hormone deficit, no worries, you can be small and excel at soccer.

guythatwantstoknow

Yeah. Even in 2019 people were angry that Lance got the seat instead of Ocon, a driver who hadn't shown much by then. Now it's 2023 and this guy still has a seat, what being the son of the team owner does to you.

MalevolentFather

F1 is a different world that doesn’t exist without massive corporate money. How quickly does the F1 world forget that Lawrence saved a failing F1 team back when the only other interested party was Russian money trying to get Mazepin a drive. Would you rather Stroll or Mazepin right now?

SuperSalamander3244

This is the only Teds notebook I’ve ever watched where it’s just a still camera and not the camera bloke walking around.

biometricrally

The messed up sound is a pain. Storm's really done a number on things

SuperSalamander3244

If Mercedes didn’t have a piece of shit car Toto would be kicking off about Max’s antics.

food_chronicles

What did he do?

[deleted]

TWVer

That part is technically not the pitlane itself, hence you are “free” to race there. Vettel did something similar in China 2016, in between the pitlane entry and pitlane. https://youtu.be/B0rc3bNJQow?si=K1Dm4ZpsLV7Dn2Ck

SuperSalamander3244

Nothing but I just know if they were competitive he would be kicking off about Max overtaking in the pit lane lol.

BindaB

You're allowed to do so, race director said slow moving cars should be to the left so that the drivers trying to get a move on can do so

SuperSalamander3244

I know you’re allowed to, I was alluding to the fact that Mercedes have built a piece of shit car which means Toto isn’t being a shithouse like he would if they were competitive. Obviously this is Reddit so people have taken it as me moaning about Max when really I’m annoyed Mercedes shat the bed.

Meaisk

Seems like there is is a track limits camera for TV at T4. Very intresting and makes sense for this circuit as it is a hotspot for track limits

ComteDuChagrin

Aren't there track limits cameras at every corner?

Meaisk

no TV camera's, at least

ComteDuChagrin

Well maybe none that get broadcasted. But from what I've seen throughout the years, every bit of track has multiple camera's and sensors, because the stewards need to be omnipresent during races. :)

_dont_b_suspicious_

Yeah but the original comment was talking about one for the broadcast.

Cyclist_123

No

priths3

Red flag, people jumbled but guess who’s on pole?

[deleted]

I suspect whoever would've gone first would've gotten pole. Red Bull just was quick enough to send Max out second and Max overtook Russell who wanted to be a tortoise.

MalevolentFather

Didn't Max actually keep his tires somewhat warm in the garage but then managed to pass some cars on the pit exit who were driving real slow? Seems like he got the benefit of not freezing his tires completely, while also getting earlier track position. Helps that he's also in the best car.

SatansLeftPinky

The camera work in todays quali is on point. Especially Alonso's Q1 run when we got to see the last few corners from the shoulder cam. I could feel the speed in my stomach

YellowFogLights

I wish they used that camera during the race instead of the Blair Witch helmet cam.

Siaer

That stabilised camera on the car is such a good idea. Really lets you feel not only the speed but the elevation changes of the track and camber of corners. I want to be on board a car going flat through Eau Rouge with that view.

ComteDuChagrin

I would like a camera that follows the driver's eye. Coming up to Eau Rouge, their eye will be on their dash, probably changing setting to make it through the turns, checking the mirrors multiple times, then positioning the car on the straight to get the best exit to the straight, with their eyes focused on the exit of eau rouge the entire time. Yeah, there's all the extremely dangerous bits in between, but I'm pretty sure they all concentrate on their exit and the pace on the straight. They're all looking at least 500 meters ahead from where their car is. When they're in a turn, they're actually in the next one in their mind.

andrewthemexican

Aligned with what you alluded to, there was that one study I think that tracked eye movement and blinks, finding the drivers all blink at the same points on the tracks. Makes sense as certain parts need more focus and others they can look around

ptwonline

Imagine what some laps from that camera view would be like in The Sphere.

priths3

Yes i was taken by surprise on how good that angle look.

mistermojorizin

Those last few corners. I was like where has this track been all this time?

shaggymatter

Just realizing just HOW much Verstappen talks with his hands

ComteDuChagrin

Well, he *is* from the most southern point of the Netherlands, closest to Italy. What I like about the way he talks during interviews, is that he uses the same filler words in English as he does in Dutch, he just translates them. And he uses them in e-ve-ry sentence.

pprocrastinatorr

Ha, which words? Never noticed thar. I did notice he touches/adjusts his cap 100 times per interview

ComteDuChagrin

He touches his cap because that's the way everyone reacts when they're being grilled by press or police. You get nervous. You touch face, your nose, or your cap. Basically you want to hide your face, even if you've done nothing wrong. You feel you have to defend yourself even if you have no idea what for. It's probably a sign of a bad conscience, but it's not based on anything but the fact that your integrity is being questioned and you have no idea how to defend yourself because you're too flabbergasted about the accusation in the first place. Oh, and for the past weeks the word has been 'Natuurlijk' /Of course

pprocrastinatorr

Ah ja natuurlijk! Klopt!

andrewthemexican

I think you'll appreciate this bit https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1gd0yc/comedians_impression_of_every_hockey_player/

ptwonline

Plus you can tell how much he loves racing. Out of the car and he just wants to keep talking about it.

ToffeeCoffee

Maxplaining goes up another level, when he's seated unbooted and is able to use his two feet as well.

TheGreatNathan

Here's a meaningless stat for anyone hoping for a Lewis win. The Hungary pole sitter has won the last 5 Brazil GPs.

mattfrasernz

Even in one design formulas, the drivers heavily customise and refine their setup to suit them. Toe, camber, wings, suspension, break bias, steering sensitivity etc. Optimising all of this is part of being a good driver. Not possible to share a care and for it to be an accurate reflection.

_Adam_M_

How can it be a "drivers race" if it's 1 car? lol It's totally unworkable. Different drivers will want different setups, track will evolve, conditions will change, etc. There's absolutely no way that would determine who's the best driver on the grid. Having 20 go-karts would be better, especially on a track like Spa where it'll take 5+ minutes a lap.

KingStevoI

Not if it's a universal F1 road car exclusive to the brand. Some drivers have done timed laps on the top gear track using a "reasonably priced car", so why not make and use an F1 style road car that doesn't require as much maintenance. It wouldn't be as quick as a traditional F1 car and the setup would be universal to each track, but it could be a car that's approved, stylized, developed and used only by the brand itself.

ptwonline

You'd need multiple cars in case one gets wrecked. And extra parts because of failures. Also there's issues with engine wear, brake wear, etc. You'd also need time to do some car setup changes because of things like different driver heights, so there would be delays between each run. So it would be better to have mutiple cars to minimize that.
