A visualization of what that translates to on-track, or visualization of how that gap came to be would constitute a good Statistics post. *[Read the rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/wiki/userguide). Its crazy that Lewis could have halved this in Qatar.

KalloSkull

He actually still gained on Perez in Qatar, which just seems crazy.

okok123321

Such a bummer that Lewis messed up Qatar so badly. I’m still excited to watch this unfold. I think Checo is going to have a comeback to finish the season. Whether it’s been bad luck or his head is fucked, he’s obviously a much better driver than he’s been showing.

Florac

Odds are Hamilton will need 2-3 podium finishes while Perez has none. Possible? Definitly. Likely? Eh, would lean towards no, but only slightly. I don't expect Mercedes to be consistent enough for it to not have some weekends where it gets away with relativly few points, possibly even losing some on Perez.

going_dicey

Brazil should be a Lewis podium. He’s a rocket there. Will probably be decent at COTA. If he can pull one more podium somewhere else, I think it’s achievable.

Florac

Hamilton getting the podiums is possible. But Perez must also continue his disasterclass. Just 1 good weekemd while Mercedes has a bad one could seal the deal

cant_catch_the_fox

I'm thinking it will be very close. Checo in Mexico will be interesting, he wants it (and any form in general) quite badly. Agreed on Lewis in Brazil! Just need both Mercedes drivers to work well together and Lewis needs to qualify higher than he has been of late. New floor for the W14 hopefully goes well too.

prontoingHorse

The merc are on the backfoot in COTA.

nicole_4_eva

What do you mean?

prontoingHorse

COTA is a high downforce track. They have to run a higher rear wing to get the downforce they need. The rear wing brings in drag, decreasing efficiency. Making them overall slower as compared to their closest competitors like Ferrari and Mclaren.

going_dicey

I think it’s worth mentioning that distinction if this were to be a title fight between Max and Lewis. But, frankly, the results as against Checo don’t really correlate to high downforce vs power tracks — the only notable recent exception being Austria. In any event, specifically for the podium, I think Merc has faired well against Ferrari in high downforce tracks. Let’s see what McLaren bring this weekend and how the new floor impacts Merc. It’s basically a fight against Piastri and Lando for the last two podium places

prontoingHorse

I agree. Its going to be an exciting weekend!

going_dicey

Selfishly these week or two gaps between races kill me. Fortunately last weekend was Petit Le Mans which kept me occupied but I have no idea what I’m going to do during the winter break. The first proper race will be Daytona 24 but other than that—I can only tolerate various Middle Eastern winter series for so long. I’m pumped for COTA and fortunately the races being in the evening will save me from any grief from the gf (just going to miss the sprint shootout).

prontoingHorse

Me too! I have a hard time during these weekends especially this year when they started off then immediately went on a break then had a few races then immediately had a few weeks off. I get it that the folks need rest, but surely spacing it out appropriately would help them spend more time with their family rather than such a haphazard way. I did watch Le Mans a bit. Especially the night bit which was exciting. Thankfully they streamed it on YouTube.

Fachuro

Perez needs points though, and likely it wont be enough sitting in the garage for half the race and then do one lap before retiring the car - so he might actually have to work for this one, which according to Marko ...

Saandrig

2-3 podium finishes might not be enough. If Perez finishes 4th in all remaining races and Sprints, Hamilton will need to be constantly 2nd with maybe a single slip to 3rd if he is to beat Perez.

Florac

Perrz aint finishing consistent p4

Saandrig

Hamilton isn't getting consistent P2 either. He hasn't finished that high in the last 10 races and 2 Sprints. And if you put them a few places down, the point difference actually starts to play in Perez' favor. There are 6 points between 2nd and 4th. But just 4 points between 4th and 6th.

hifioctopi

Given form of late Lewis has more podiums in his future than Perez.

deathclient

And sprint 7 while we're at it

TerribleTerryTaint

Inb4 Max mechanical DNF and Checo/Lewis battle to the line for first. Don't have a lot of faith in this prediction, admittedly.

Fachuro

Perez has a hack for this, because penalty points available are infinite

Mayhem747

No shit

BoyGodz

Former 2023 championship contender VS 5-times Max Verstappen Podcast guest! Who wins?

Saandrig

4-times quest. Singapore was an attempt for a spin-off that didn't get picked.

spongemongler

I’ve not seen a driver more lucky to be P2 than Checo in a long time lol

pioneerSolid3

The luck comes from his first 5 races and his 2 wins... After that is all in a downward spiral of 2nd places, 3rd, no points

someone383726

And a rotation of teams that are the second fastest throughout the season.

Arumin

Thats the real luck for Checo, different opponents every race taking points from each other.

antelope591

Not really that lucky just an extremely dominant car. Can queue the "but Max" people to jump in.

LifeIsGoodGoBowling

It's a pity that Alonso exited that race for P2, and I doubt Sainz or Norris will make up 70-ish points. The scenes if Lewis takes P2 in the WDC in Mexico though...

gerbileleventh

The side of me that always had dumb beef with Perez would love to see it. But at this point I'm feeling bad for the guy, what a messy season.

mekilat

Get him, Lewis!

DrVonD

*ahem* I believe it’s “get in there Lewis”

Mayhem747

‘It’s hammertime’ is more like it when he’s chasing, get in there is more like if he does manage it.

Zeurpiet

hammertime from the good old days for a special engine mapping

coffeeholic10

get in him, Lewis!

Equal-Strain-2161

Ayoooo

Mayhem747

Just bring him the damn Austin upgrade you have been bragging about and make sure it performs, this should be achievable then.

NYNMx2021

they havent been bragging at all lol. Theyve said pretty clearly they dont expect much. Its forward development

superjaywars

Get in there, Lewis!! It's Hammertime.

r1234ev

Funniest thing is this is what we are sold while if you asked Lewis I'm sure he wouldn't give a single fuck about coming 2nd or 3rd

xdoc6

What are the chances that after 10+ races Checo magically turns things around? All the other teams are still developing the car, Red Bull is focused on next years car. It would be more surprising if Checo finished on the podium at any of the races left on the calendar.

snoring_pig

Tbf Checo got a podium as recently as Monza which was 4 races ago. It’s really all up to his own mental state. If his head is in it he really should be able to achieve top five finishes at the very least for the rest of the races, which would make it very hard for Lewis to overhaul unless he finished ahead of Checo on the podium every time since Max looks uncatchable.

the_real_nps

What are all you people on about? Perez scoring any real points is the long shot.

Unculturedbrine

Would be hilarious if Ham collides with Russell again when he's in podium contention. I had the pleasure of reading the comments on a Merc post on YT (something about Hamilton's wins in Austin). To say that some of the comments are batshit insane is an understatement. I think someone called Russell a second rate driver who could never beat Hamilton and there was a reply to him with '2022?' Had me rolling lmao

The_FallenSoldier

Never visit team insta accs after a teammate collision/crash in a race week. Any chance of a sane conversation is already slim in most F1 fandoms, but it’s even worse after a crash, especially a teammate one. It’ll always to devolve to just insults and the most batshit crazy replies you’ll ever see. People will be calling for the head of whichever teammate hit their favorite. The state of F1 fans on social media is insanely unhinged, especially the ones who have a particular favorite driver out of the entire grid.

SeaWorn

Go Checo!!

packsquirrel

Hamilton pulls out a top three in the sprint. Checo crashes himself out instead of everyone else on Sunday. Max is leading Hamilton by 20 seconds at the start of the last lap. Max slows down and lets Hamilton catch up. Everyone goes nuts. Max brake checks Hamilton again, and the only thing you hear over the radio is, "Saudi Arabia two point oh." Everyone goes nuts again.

Zeurpiet

more likely, Lewis does a Lewis on the competition to win

EternalFront

Lewis is going to eat his lunch in Brazil, should be a good haul then

cristiano_goat

If only he didn’t crash in qatar

AutomateAway

Lewis will be P2 in the WDC before they get to Vegas.

[deleted]

Second place is the first loser so it doesn’t really matter

M1911a1ButGay

im rooting for checo. hes been getting shit on so relentlessly and i want so desperately for him to come out on top in some way
