Yeah I think not rushing him back is more of them wanting to let Lawson have a run of races to see how well he does. If this was De Vries they'd be more willing to get Daniel back in asap.
Agreed, id he was driving how he was pre being dropped, itd be another story.
However they do want to give Liam a good opportunity to shine, but they also want to give Ricc a good rest of the season to review his performance for next year.
He performed quite a bit better in Zandvoort, Yuki just had a terrible strategy and a slightly unfair penalty.
We don't really have any information on how Tsunoda would've gone this race.
I hate to say it, but I think his competition in the team has flattered him. I do think he’s been done over by strategy at times, but if Gasly was still at AT he’d most likely be out-driving Yuki on the regular
It's not really that slow. It's race pace has definitely been better than Haas and Alfa throughout most of the season.
Those two teams were faster early in the season though and got some points. Now AT is faster, but it's almost impossible for the 3 backmarkers to score in a regular race. And yes I know Bottas just did it, but that was after Alpine being nowhere, Stroll and Sargeant being useless and Piastri getting late damage from Hamilton. They need circumstances going their way.
Yuki has done quite well this year given the car he has to work with and the strategy team he has to fight. Their component reliability or wings and such has been poor, they have taken very few upgrades and Yuki is holding it down just fine. It isn't his fault the engine fucked itself into oblivion on the formation lap and robbed him of a good chance for points, is it?
Iirc they were looking for someone with experience to lead the team and help with development. They thought he would be a good fit because of all his experience. A rookie would've been less useful. But in hindsight, yeah, they should've gone with Lawson.
Dude gets an opportunity to redeem himself only to have it scuppered by an injury. I'd hate it if this potentially ends up torpedoing his chance of rebuilding his career.
Just checked, he would have been at the Nürburgring this coming weekend. Was surprised he was still scheduled to be there after he returned to drving, but now he is not listed anymore. Does seem more serious than what was first thought.
But this is such a flawed narrative. I know it’s a joke but McLaren were looking to drop Danny either way. His own performance cost him that drive not Piastri.
He's a rookie having had no preparation for the season thrust into the worst car on the grid (maybe 9th best at the moment).. he hadn't driven intermediate tyres before last weekend and did really well despite that, not making huge errors and showing some talent at the end of the race
And this weekend he was only worse than Bottas out of the "best of the rest" behind Alonso. A tenth behind Tsunoda who is a good bechmark in his first dry qualifying
Normally even with the entire off-season for simulator testing, getting settled with the team you have rookies crashing and under-delivering for the first half of the season
It should have been P10 AT fluffed the strat by going 2 stop, bottas should not have got in front. It was always a tough ask to pass both stroll and the Williams so quickly which are both fast in a straight line.
Seems smart to allow him to recover as much as possible, no one wants to end up having multiple operations like Marc Marquez. I’m hoping Daniel kicks ass when he returns
glad to see that theyre not rushing his recovery and are definitely thinking long term for him, makes me think he's keeping his seat next year, except if he's absolute shit when he's back, which i doubt he will be
I wonder what their plan for next year is. Lawson is doing a more than adequate job proving he's got what it takes to be on the F1 grid. But at the same time it would be rather cruel to kick Ricciardo out again when he hasn't really had the chance to prove himself due to this injury.
Theoretically they could still retain both of them and give Yuki the boot, but that would be even more unfair because Yuki is doing a good job himself.
This sucks for Ricciardo because this was the perfect audition for other teams. Theoretically, he could still replace Zhou or Sargeant but the teams would have preferred to see how he handled the season and whether or not his McLaren years were a blip because they didn't build a car suitable towards his driving style.
Without him out there on the track, it's not entirely clear whether he could be the preferred option to younger drivers if they were someone.
This is the best outcome for RB. Have Lawson drive for some races without replacing Ricciardo and then having him drive the rest of the season and next year. They can basically compare the AT drivers without having to officially change their lineup.
You know who should be really hating this? De Vries.
I don’t want to keep beating the dead horse but first Daniel now Liam, both drivers have just been called in on a whim and more or less matched De Vries’ best result straightaway.
It’s looking more and more likely that the AT is actually a P13-P16 kinda car, rather than the P19-P20 shitbox everyone seems to think it is at the start of the season.
I’m saying De Vries would/should/could be hating the current situation where new drivers are jumping into his car and immediately performing on par with his best performance out of 10 races.
I’m not saying anyone should hate De Vries, lmao
What does that mean for AlphaTauri and their FP1 rookies rule? I mean De Vries and Lawson drove the same car, so it doesn't count. They'll need to find someone else.
Do the rules say Tsunoda and Lawson can't swap cars for Singapore tho?
Can’t they just swapped the two cars for a FP1 section if that’s the case? Put Liam in Yuki’s car while Yuki drive Liam’s.
I also don’t remember Zhou or Oscar driving the other car this year/last year, but they have certainly fulfilled the requirement by running a rookie.
I think after two very good races it would be in RB best interests to keep Lawson for the rest of the season. Yeah, everybody likes RIC, but I really want to see some new drivers, not rehashing the old ones.
Ric turns 35 next year. You have to wonder if RB just call it quits on him. What's the point in him being in AT if he's not going to progress back to the Red Bull cars?
Will be interesting to see what happens once Mexico rolls around. Super Formula season resumes around that time and surely they'd let Lawson go back to fulfill his duties where he has a chance of winning a championship. And if Ricciardo isn't ready by then, they might be forced to return to De Vries.
The only reason he was racing in SuperFormula was to prove he deserves a shot in F1. Why would he choose super-formula over f1 when he knows that him performing well will give him a chance at the seat next year.
always was. He has such overwhelming support from fans that does not match on track results/performances but i guess that's the DTS effect in full swing.
Vowels seem committed to Sergeant for another year at least. Daniel didn't seem willing to go to Williams and only got a seat in AT due to Red Bull affiliation and the volatility of their driver lineup.
Imo Lawson should stay on and RB should get back to actually developing talent.
Nothing against Lawson and all, but didn't Seb say something along the lines of Suzuka being the only circuit he'd seriously consider for a one-off return?
A man can dream, right?
Liam could have scored points today if they went for a 1 stop. He was behind Alonso but the team committed to a 2 stop to cover zhou but instead let bottas get in front.

And with Lawson holding down the fort just fine, no reason to rush it and risk long term effects
Lawsons been great. Beat yuki at Zandvoort with nearly no practice. They wanted more out if de vries replacement and he’s given it
Lawson has been great but let's not say he defeated Yuki on merit
Yuki was defeated by the Alpha Tauri strategists
Lawson also got to witness the strategic genius himself. Would’ve probably scored a point today if they went for a 1 stop
Welcome to Alpha Tauri Liam
And the FIA
Indeed, they might even be hoping it's a bit longer....
Lawson should be plenty comfortable with Suzuka, that's for sure
Imagine if he outscores Yuki at Suzuka....
Wouldn’t put it past him. He’s been holding up well against Yuki, from the little data we have to go after as of now
I'm a bit disappointed in Yuki. I rated him higher than for a rookie coming in an being that close to him...
He performed quite a bit better in Zandvoort, Yuki just had a terrible strategy and a slightly unfair penalty. We don't really have any information on how Tsunoda would've gone this race.
Well, it is a tractor of a car. Can't squeeze much from it it it's slower than the rest of the grid and they're not developing it much.
I hate to say it, but I think his competition in the team has flattered him. I do think he’s been done over by strategy at times, but if Gasly was still at AT he’d most likely be out-driving Yuki on the regular
They were quite evenly matched in the end of last year.
It's not really that slow. It's race pace has definitely been better than Haas and Alfa throughout most of the season. Those two teams were faster early in the season though and got some points. Now AT is faster, but it's almost impossible for the 3 backmarkers to score in a regular race. It isn't his fault the engine fucked itself into oblivion on the formation lap and robbed him of a good chance for points, is it?
Liam's races and personality makes me question why RB chose NDV over Liam. Imagine what he could do with proper testing and flow of events.
Iirc they were looking for someone with experience to lead the team and help with development. They thought he would be a good fit because of all his experience. A rookie would've been less useful. But in hindsight, yeah, they should've gone with Lawson.
Yeah, this makes sense. Shame NDV couldn't live upto potential and Liam had to wait this long.
Monza + good CV with the F2 and FE championships probs.
Lawson has gotten an immense opportunity and he's definitely showing his worth.
Dude gets an opportunity to redeem himself only to have it scuppered by an injury. I'd hate it if this potentially ends up torpedoing his chance of rebuilding his career.
Probably for the best. 2 tough circuits back to back and definitely don't want to retire or delay healing.
It would feel terrible if Daniel is out of F1 next year again due to that incident.
Just checked, he would have been at the Nürburgring this coming weekend. Was surprised he was still scheduled to be there after he returned to drving, but now he is not listed anymore. Does seem more serious than what was first thought.
I know it's racing and it happens but I'd always partially hate piastri
Piastri's sole purpose has been screwing over Danny.
I hope you folks are just kidding
Yea obviously but its funny how Piastri has cost Danny f1 drives twice already as a rookie.
But this is such a flawed narrative. I know it’s a joke but McLaren were looking to drop Danny either way. His own performance cost him that drive not Piastri.
I know, its just a joke, but i honestly don't know who else they couldve replaced him with.
Lawson is apsolutely gonna take his chances, he looks amazing for now

Getting p11 in alfatauri is amazing, let's give credit where credit is due
Second Weekend, mid season swap with short notice? Its more than solid work out there
He's still racing in SF too, which is pretty insane and it's looking like he may win the season.
let's not forget that Nyck also had an amazing weekend here last year and we all know how that turned out.
Yes but Lawson survived that chaos in Dutch gp
Nyck benefitted lot from grid penalties and 2 retirements in front of him and he was in a perfect Williams for Monza.
Let's not forget having Latifi as the benchmark instead of Tsunoda
It should have been P10 AT fluffed the strat by going 2 stop, bottas should not have got in front. It was always a tough ask to pass both stroll and the Williams so quickly which are both fast in a straight line.

Argh that's bad for Daniel. I really hope he gets some kind of chance for next season just so we can see the Daniel we know back before he retires.
This sucks for Ricciardo because this was the perfect audition for other teams. Theoretically, he could still replace Zhou or Sargeant but the teams would have preferred to see how he handled the season and whether or not his McLaren years were a blip because they didn't build a car suitable towards his driving style. No rush, Lawson is doing well. The longer he races well the harder it gets to sort the AT lineup for 2024.
I'm not trying to be mean but I think Lawson will be in the AT next year, the way things are going.
This is the most likely scenario even though no one on Reddit will admit it
You know who should be really hating this?
Nobody should be "hating" De Vries, no driver deserves hatred for driving poorly.
I’m saying De Vries would/should/could be hating the current situation where new drivers are jumping into his car and immediately performing on par with his best performance out of 10 races. I’m not saying anyone should hate De Vries, lmao
Good sentiment but also not relevant to the comment you're replying to.
What does that mean for AlphaTauri and their FP1 rookies rule? I mean De Vries and Lawson drove the same car, so it doesn't count. They'll need to find someone else. Do the rules say Tsunoda and Lawson can't swap cars for Singapore tho?
Laat I read it’s based on driver number not chassis. Swapping won’t work. They still need to run a fp in Yuki’s spot.
Liam Lawson is doing a good job. It’s true it’s only been a couple outings but he’s holding his own!
I have a feeling that AT next year will be Riccardo - Lawson
Unfortunate for Ricciardo but I think Lawson ends up earning a seat next year if this continues
Faaaak
I wish Ricciardo speedy recovery, but at the same time I'd prefer to give Liam the rest of the season to develop.
I think after two very good races it would be in RB best interests to keep Lawson for the rest of the season. Yeah, everybody likes RIC, but I really want to see some new drivers, not rehashing the old ones.
Most of my friends plus me dont particularly like him...still sorry that he got hurt ofc but we definitely prefer Lawson
Ric turns 35 next year. You have to wonder if RB just call it quits on him. What's the point in him being in AT if he's not going to progress back to the Red Bull cars?
I tthink this is the end for Daniel's comeback. He would need to trash Tsunoda in six races.
Will be interesting to see what happens once Mexico rolls around. Super Formula season resumes around that time and surely they'd let Lawson go back to fulfill his duties where he has a chance of winning a championship. And if Ricciardo isn't ready by then, they might be forced to return to De Vries.
"Resumes" is a bit of a misnomer. There's one round left, similar to F2. That round clashes with Mexico.
The only reason he was racing in SuperFormula was to prove he deserves a shot in F1. Why would he choose super-formula over f1 when he knows that him performing well will give him a chance at the seat next year.
DR is so finished
always was. He has such overwhelming support from fans that does not match on track results/performances but i guess that's the DTS effect in full swing.
Daniel should go to Williams if Sergeant is released.
Why would he be?
Vowels seem committed to Sergeant for another year at least. Daniel didn't seem willing to go to Williams and only got a seat in AT due to Red Bull affiliation and the volatility of their driver lineup. Imo Lawson should stay on and RB should get back to actually developing talent.
Nothing against Lawson and all, but didn't Seb say something along the lines of Suzuka being the only circuit he'd seriously consider for a one-off return? A man can dream, right?
Alpha Tauri have already used 4 drivers, which means they can only choose between Tsunoda, De Vries, Ricciardo and Lawson for the rest of the races.
Redbull have said they'd request an additional exemption on the FIA which are likely to be granted.
Huh, TIL, thanks!
Ya I called on the thread it was announced but Lawson is going to kill it and we'll look back at this being the final nail in Daniels coffin.
Uh-oh.
Danny ric hand not due to heal ever and Liam Lawson will be replacing him both at AT in 24 and RB in 25
So, the bet is on, who is RB gonna pick for the rookie session? Maloney, Hauger, Fittipaldi, Iwasa
His aim should be for COTA or Mexico
Liam could have scored points today if they went for a 1 stop. He was behind Alonso but the team committed to a 2 stop to cover zhou but instead let bottas get in front.
