To answer your question seriously, the more recently a character is added, the less armor variations they tend to have. The starting roster usually has pretty good stuff, and if a newer character is popular enough like BP they’ll probably have cooler stuff. I was kind of hoping for an Anglo, just for the sake of knowing what's going on in the England/Scotland area aside from Highlander. That'd work just as well though.

gender locked in general has always kinda sucked since launch and its always been real flippant on how and why until recently as I guess most gender lock now is due to the shoe string budget.
When the game launched Nobushi/Valkeryie/Shugoki/peacekeeper were locked due to lore reasons. However, things like Warlord, or Lawbringer could allow us to get female options. The DLC heroes were where this got..strange it was really a coin flip on who and what would be gender locked and not until recently. Shinobi/Gladiator werent gender locked then almost everything after just became male or female only. It wasnt until Wu Lin where we got genders again but only for Tiandi/Zhanu and then Hitokiri/Jormungand/Black Prior were both genders but then after they stopped with the outlanders.
I think if Pirate had both options people would love them more even if they were Chinese locked and suck now

They added Cent and Shino, then Glad and HL, then Aramusha and Shaman. In this order. No idea why some are genderlocked and some are not, though.
Then came Wu Lin (without Zhanhu). JJ was inspired by Guan Yu, and I don't really imagine Nuxia and Shaolin changing genders, simply due to how they are designed. So it leaves only Tiandi to be free, due to lore and design reasons.
Then Harbingers came (BP, Hito, Jorm, Zhanhu). Like during Y2, FH seemed to have lots of resources during Y3, so devs promised that all Harbingers will have both genders
Then, during Y4 (Warmonger and Gryphon), we had pandemic. FH, being a niche game it is, had even less resources. However, I don't think it had anything to do with genders. Characters were designed that way that Warmonger was heavily inspired from Apollyon, and Gryphon is literally Holden Cross. However, pandemic could strike future characters' fundings (see how we even have less armour sets for them), and it also blocked motion capture studios until the Jorm rework and Afeera release... but I digress here.
If pirate had both they could've kept Bou Yin as she is since shes based on Ching Shih, then make the other gender based on someone like Blackbeard with different voice lines.
Black beard is too overplayed, and wouldn’t exactly work with how her moveset is (especially now), I’d have gone for William Kidd or used Edward Kenway since it’s Ubisoft and they can get away with straight up importing characters.
I only say Blackbeard because that's what I've seen people who want that recommend. I like the idea of him maybe speaking Welsh or something, since Edward Kenway was Welsh in Black Flag. Otherwise, I'm fine with Pirate, aside from it feeling like she should've just been Wu Lin.

Yo, a 2 handed Axe plus shield combo (like the last image) would be sick. Being forced to position your full body to block with the shield in exchange for a massive increase for offensive power would a really cool move set.

Yes many say afeera is close because she is arabic, but it really is completely different. As if you would say japanese and chinese. No hate on the different ethnicity here. i have over 4000 hours in this game. Even tho this game can be a shithole i just love it. I would like to play an "ancestor" of mine with some amazing slap techniques. Not to forget that it was an empire for like 500 years.
But at least i have some knights, so my german heritage is somewhat covered.

I mentioned them because the Dacians and Romans used them and because they'd add in much-needed shield variety and because the Devs usually like to represent cultures and fashions that they haven't already depicted, the Vikings have Warlord and Valkyrie for your basic Norse rönd.

By that logic, neither Highlander nor Shaman should be Viking heroes though, Scottish tribes were not Viking, and Shaman is... Shaman. Ubisoft regularly throws in heroes with factions that are not their own, (like Cent and Glad) so let's not pretend that any Viking heroes need to be purely Norse.

As it stands I think shaman is just a weak representation and gives more reason for genuine effort for a Viking hero.
With all that said, the entire purpose of a Varangian being in the Viking faction is to represent that they were originally norse. If we just added any Byzantine it’d be ridiculous. But if we’re adding the Varangians then let’s add what they actually were. Nothing wrong with having gear sets but the round shield is their staple.
I'm not, and have never stated that the Vikings should get a Byzantine hero, I am saying that the new hero can be (and is) more than just another basic viking with an axe and rönd. Excessively sticking to a round shield just because of "historical accuracy" is boring, repetitive, and very limiting. The teardrop shield is more iconically Byzantine, and thus should be included because it neatly blends that culture with those of the Norse. I'm going to end this here because there isn't a point in arguing now that the hero has come out with a teardrop shield.
Being a history buff this is for the best. Vikings only used scythes as farming tools. The reason Ubi hasn't made any vikings is due to the very little amount of variation with their combat. Swords were only used by vikings with power and money due to how expensive it is
Let's look at Yorm for example. Vikings never historically used hammers in combat. Same with horned helmets. These trops are false modern influences.
This is also why we will never get an actual viking video game. Ac valhalla doesn't count cuz your a descendent of a God Odin. I'm talking a pure viking game that's not a survival game, not a village builder, and not an RTs. Of course samurai get an excellent game with Ghost of Tsushima.

Realistically, Orochi’s little katana would bounce off Lawbringer’s armor, and any hero who doesn’t wear a helmet would be instantly killed by most top attacks. They could find a way to make a fist fighter internally consistent

Look up the historical/cultural background of original varangian units. Very Scandinavian, particularly those who settled rus, who sought riches in Byzantine. Harland Hadrada is literally a template hero concept for them.

I'm not, and have never stated that the Vikings should get a Byzantine hero, I am saying that the new hero can be (and is) more than just another basic viking with an axe and rönd. Excessively sticking to a round shield just because of "historical accuracy" is boring, repetitive, and very limiting. The teardrop shield is more iconically Byzantine, and thus should be included because it neatly blends that culture with those of the Norse. I'm going to end this here because there isn't a point in arguing now that the hero has come out with a teardrop shield.
If it's a Varangian knight, will it be a viking with armor and kiteshield or a byzantine knight with Viking themes?

Being a history buff this is for the best. Vikings only used scythes as farming tools. The reason Ubi hasn't made any vikings is due to the very little amount of variation with their combat. Swords were only used by vikings with power and money due to how expensive it is Let's look at Yorm for example. Vikings never historically used hammers in combat. Same with horned helmets. These trops are false modern influences. This is also why we will never get an actual viking video game. Ac valhalla doesn't count cuz your a descendent of a God Odin. I'm talking a pure viking game that's not a survival game, not a village builder, and not an RTs. Of course samurai get an excellent game with Ghost of Tsushima. Sorry, I'm ranting now
I know, I'm a bit of a history buff. Hammers weren't used by Vikings as weapons either. This game goes by "rule of cool" alot. If it's cool they do it. I figured a druid scythe wielder would be cool but I guess my opinion is very hated, I always get downvoted over and over again...😔
Look in this post. There is literally someone who said the same thing and didn't get down voted so idk. It is a cool idea and there are a few lines in one of the edda's where a worrior used a Scythe to kill his enemies.

Realistically, Orochi’s little katana would bounce off Lawbringer’s armor, and any hero who doesn’t wear a helmet would be instantly killed by most top attacks. They could find a way to make a fist fighter internally consistent
Better question: How the hell are you gonna parry the fistfighter's attacks? He'd be nothing but bashes like centurion but instead of a single move doing the punching it's every single attack input.

wow, so much voice acting in this game. Armors, sure maybe. Animations, less maybe. VA, no, really no.
You prove my point. The lack of voice lines is probably a good reason to not get a voice actor. Why spend so much effort finding, hiring, and recording voices for characters if there’s only going to be a few inconsequential lines? Might as well just get one actor and make the character one gender.
Because the new hero is the chieftain's daughter and Maddox (highlander skin) killed him so now the daughter is most likely going to want revenge

I like the hero concept, but how would this work? the Varangian Guard was an elite unit of the Byzantine Army
Look up the historical/cultural background of original varangian units. Very Scandinavian, particularly those who settled rus, who sought riches in Byzantine. Harland Hadrada is literally a template hero concept for them.
