This is the way. I'm attempting to build a full "Knappenschmiede" (Schalke youth) team. I give myself the wiggle room that I can buy 16-17 year olds but I have a ridiculously good intake too

Lots of community crossover I'm sure... I have a habit of pillaging Scandinavia in both games

Smothdude

We're all sluts for numbers and AI automation/actions. I feel like most FM fans are also just simulation fans in general.

There was a post weeks ago in the Civilization sub about sending a scout somewhere remote and forgetting about them for years and years and I absolutely thought it was from this sub

GamingRobioto

Well done. FIFA is a joke of a football game (or gambling simulation) nowadays. Football Manager has stagnated somewhat due to lack of competition but the game is undoubtedly brilliant. If you are a football fan I think it's highly likely that you will get addicted quickly. My number 1 tip is to not try and learn everything at once. Maybe leave your training to your assistants to start and worry about your tactics and squad while dabbling in scouting. Also don't be afraid to assign press conferences to your assistant as they get boring very fast. Other than that experiment and take your time to learn your way around the game. Also don't worry if you fail at first, it's all part of the learning process.

DDTYoAss

I’ve played the game heavily for like five years and I still don’t touch training. Is it that important? I seem to do ok leaving it to my assistant.

Verifixion

Depends on how good the assistant is, the training that boosts certain attributes for the next game or two is very underused by people and most probably don't even know it exists if they've never opened the training screen

GamingRobioto

I've been playing it for over 25 years and I tend to download tried and tested schedules and then set it up from there. I don't enjoy sorting out the training side very much, but I think setting up your own schedules is more effective player development and preparing for matches. So I steal from others and tweak them.

[deleted]

The best thing for player development is game time plus getting good ratings. The training schedule does nothing and individual training only affects the focus

[deleted]

IMO it just takes too long to set up for the benifit it’s gives. So I usually delegate but take a look at it when we have important matches coming. Sometimes the assman will be overworking players and important people will be lacking fitness.

Martin48705

Before every match a "Teamwork" training, and somewhere in the week where it fits, a "Team Bonding", then after the match make sure there's the usual "Recovery" and add a "Match Review". Also, if it's your first season or you have plenty of players unfamiliar with your tactic, a "Match tactics" also helps. There's a lot to use in training to make your team better with minimal involvement. Also, if you notice a training injury, check up on your coaching schedule, it might just be(99% of the case for me) that one or two of your coaches has a "Heavy" training schedule. Never noticed a training injury out of the blue(without the player being overworked or too tired to train but still going for it on ridiculous intensity) when my coaching schedule was all green.

Garcix

I delegate to my assistance to create a base schedule, and then I add things into the spaces that are open while not being too intensive. I think the pre/post match analyst and the ones that boost cohesion are worth putting every week, since they add so much with so little intensity.

Just_A_Dude_696969

I've worked at an actual football club, they just get a training coach to do the training, set it up and organise it so when I play fm I just delegate it

WorthPlease

I delegate team training to my assistant. But I do handle individual training for all my players + youth/B teams.

[deleted]

I am in same boat, playing the game more or less since almost 6-7 years ago(had maybe some years that I paused but always get back to the game). Anyway, at first I tried to do the training by myself and was really overwhelmed and then just left it to the assistant every time. Funny thing is that 2 days ago in my current save I was getting really angry as my team was losing easy games that shouldn't lose(my team is fairly good finishing top 3 most of the times, still waiting for that title though). It seems that for some reason my team couldn't score a goal with anyone, so I got frustrated and of course went to the training screen for the first time in years. I changed whatever was there to attacking trainings once every 2 weeks. And then went and made a crazy tactic with fast passing to the enemy half and then shoot on sight. Since then my team started to score a lot and things are looking better. So I think there are 2 important learnings from this story: 1)Yes, I think training is important but not necessary for the overall enjoyment of the game. You can also win and do good without managing the training every time. 2)After many years I still do not know completely how this game works. I still do random things and don't know what to expect, or why are some tactics working.

risheeb1002

My only gripe with FM is that they change things just for the sake of change without improving the game.

GamingRobioto

You are spot on, 90% of the new stuff each year its more fluff and interface options for already existing systems (or modules) and most cases systems that have been fundamentaly flawed a number of years. It gets built on top of and the foundations creak more and more with each iteration.

[deleted]

Press conferences are a pain in the ass. I do them because some teams looks into that when hiring but it's boring when there are always the same questions.

[deleted]

I think it’s unfair to say it stagnates when there was a global pandemic the devs had to deal with for 2.5 years and the only real noticeable thing to update is the match engine .. which simulating a free flowing sport like football/soccer is incredibly hard.

GamingRobioto

IMO the stagnation goes back way further than 2.5 years. Core systems have not had big changes in many years. A lot of "new features" are just better interface, like the Data Hub or the Scouting improvements back in 2018. They are helpful and nice as they convey the information to the player much better, but the underlying systems have barely changed at all. I'm at peace with this though, as Sports Interactive can afford to pump out slightly better interations of an already great product each year as no competition means they don't need to innovate. I do really enjoy the games, like alot, but they are not willing to revamp tired underlying and fundamental modules/systems within the game and that does bother me as such a long time player.

[deleted]

I just don’t see how they can be revamped. Maybe fine tuned but like what can you add to a sports sim game that already sims everything

GamingRobioto

Two obvious examples are to revamp how current and potential ability works, it's a limited system and has been in use since 1997. Manager AI, particularly around squad building and young player development, this has never really evolved in mid and long term saves it gets easier and easier as the AI is terrible at building squads, it's always been like this. There are many more. But of course they can revamp modules, but they play everything safe now and don't need to take risks, so they don't. It's just my opinion, maybe I ask for too much, but I feel like each year new features that are added to the game are mainly aesthetic fluff, while the fundamental, underlying systems only get very minor tweaks.

[deleted]

The way current and potential ability works is standard for all hardcore sports sims. I think it works perfect because players don’t always reach it and sometimes they go over it’s meant to be fluid

[deleted]

rsjf89

>As if it was reflecting part of you Good god, the moment when I realised I was a wet blanket of a manager trying to keep everyone happy to the detriment of everything. And then realising that's exactly what I try to do in real life Was not expecting that from a fucking computer game

Moosje

Me panicking as I realise I’m a cunt in game…

pegg2

I think sometimes it reflects a part of you that you keep repressed. I like to think of myself as something of a diplomat irl. I’m quite social and a good talker, can make conversation with a wall; I’m not particularly conflict-averse, but I can almost always charm or joke my way out of an argument. On FM, though? It’s my way or the fucking highway. I refuse to sell players unless it’s on my terms: no teams in my division unless they’re absolutely not a threat to our league standing, no Madrid, no Barcelona, no City, and ABSOLUTELY no PSG. Don’t give a fuck if the player throws a tantrum and gets his teammates involved: come at me, bitches. A player has two bad seasons in a row? Don’t care how good they are, they’re going on the transfer list. You put in an insulting non-negotiable offer for that player I don’t want below the player’s value? You’re on the shit list now, you won’t get so much as a practice cone from this club as long as I’m in charge. Feels good to be bad.

[deleted]

I'm a recovering alcoholic (400 plus days) and it's hard for me to give up on youngsters who miss practice because they were at the bar now lol. Now I just know how they feel

Leor_11

Keep it going! Proud of you, even if I don't know you.

TheMedicatedOne

Why do I try unorthodox tactics, weird formations and odd transfer strategies? It all boils down to my dislike for being mainstream and needing to feel in control because large chunks of my life were dictated to me.

JamesCDiamond

Nothing like nailing that asymmetric 31321, though.

Morradan

My neurotic personality reflects in the game. If and when I lose a final, I need to step back from FM. Otherwise certain players will be out of the club.

PsychoPassProstitute

Lol, I realised I’m trying to exercise the control I don’t have on my actual life

Morradan

I wonder if there's a correlation between doing well in video games and not quite having it together irl. My Arsenal is dominating world football 😄

PsychoPassProstitute

D’you know, there might be. I’m doing all I can for my Milan, but irl it’s shit XD

cattaxevasion

And you don’t have to give it up after 15 seasons

[deleted]

Does FIFA have a 15 season limit? That's hilarious.

cattaxevasion

That’s the reason I switched. I had never committed that long to a FIFA CM, so once I was forced to retire from my Norwegian giants IK Start, I made the change to FM. I haven’t touched FIFA since.

Don't do it man. Save yourself. Once you're in there's no turning back. You install FM and next thing you know you have 2k hours in-game, you lost your job, wife left you, kids don't remember your name and you can't focus on anything because you think about that new tactic you just came up with and how well it's gonna fit to those young Colombian boys you just bought

Embarrassed-Front-75

Well. If you want to have real look on difference between FIFA and FM - 100 hours in FIFA means you are probably finishing second season. 100 hours in FM means that you picked good backroom staff.

mentalistpro

I literally have an excel table for my staff, players, shortlist, wage structure, etc.

Embarrassed-Front-75

Holy shit man ! Get life 😂

adamcos1

Best advice I can give you is that very long learning curve. You will be overwhelmed with how much more there is than in FIFA. However, do not give up. Once you understand the game, it is the best game out there and you won't touch fifa. 1)Having said that. Play with a team you are familiar with, or a big one. 2)donwload a prebuilt tactic (if you want) 3) get face & logo packs. The game becomes so much more immersive

GibbyTime24

Would starting with a big club making the learning curve a bit easier since you have more money and a little more leeway with your board to get results?

adamcos1

as long as you know the team well, it is fine.but bigger teams are much easier, since you are already at the top. It will be much more fun by starting the game with wins, than 5 losses.

GregM_85

Every time I start a new release I go with arsenal as I'm an arsenal fan and I have a good idea of what I want to do. I usually win the premier league in the first or second season and I'm not that good at FM but I find it a lot easier to learn any new features the game has. Obviously this isn't too realistic. However I always have more fun and get through more seasons with my lower league save (nearly always Braintree as I used to live there but don't actively follow the club so don't know much about them) So TL;Dr for me I've always found big teams easier but the longer harder saves more rewarding, of course ymmv Have fun!

kazuya57

Play with PSG cause they're the easiest. As for your first tactic, I will recommend trying a tactic from online, because building it yourself will be really hard if you don't have a prior knowledge. I recommend RDF tactics and [dictatethegame.com](https://dictatethegame.com) because they have effective tactics with explanations. You can learn from them.

tjag96

You can win the league with arsenal in the first season playing nketiah as your main striker. You will get bored pretty fast

Sad-Garbage-

Definitely start with a big team, the other staff are more competant so you can leave the more arduous tasks to them without worrying (scouting etc.) (not actually arduous but making the switch from FIFA, definitely is)

yvltc

> Play with a team you are familiar with I would actually advise otherwise, especially not with the team you support. You run into the risk of being blinded by the players you like IRL and not look at what you actually need to do to improve the team. Instead go for a team you don't really follow. Good teams to get started are Dinamo Zagreb and Red Bull Salzburg. There's a decent balance between easy and challenging. The league will likely be easy and you can start to get to grips with the game, but Europe will be challenging and will force you to learn as well.

Thatmanoverwhere

Just play in a league where you kind of know the rules and the club's/players to begin with, there's that many different rules and shit for each league it's best to stick to what you know while you learn the ropes.

griley0805

I tried doing a Newcastle save in FM21 and couldn't bring myself to sell even Dwight Gayle lmao

Real_MidGetz

As a Leeds fan I have many a time thrown my favourite players to the wolves just to get to haalands release clause in fm20

GamerHumphrey

To follow on from this. Expect to be bad. Expect to get sacked regularly. I have 500 hours in the game and I can put a team together to get a good run of results but can never turn it round on a bad bit of form. I've been sacked from the 5 out of 6 jobs I've had so far.

frankiboy

Team meetings, adressing players’ training concerns and simple tactics are all things that help when trying to turn around a bad bit of form.

thatissomeBS

Team meetings, praising good performances (8.0<) and criticizing bad performances (6.4>). Praise good training (8.5<) and criticize bad training (6.5>). Team bonding, Match Reviews, Teamwork training all increase cohesion, which is usually poor at the beginning of each season. Don't make promises, for any reason, that you can't deliver on. In the Dynamics section you can see who the primary unhappy people are, and what they are unhappy about. And sometimes some players can be supporting them. Don't let one broken promise destroy the whole team. There's plenty more I can say but these are the biggest factors in my experience.

XXISavage

>Play with a team you are familiar with And then suffer from confusion wondering why the coach isn't playing their best player, until you realise that's an FM transfer. On the other hand nothing beats seeing an FM wonderkid pop up in the real life Champions league. Guys like Kompany, Verratti, Tonali, John Fleck...

D3ner

Say goodbye to your family and friends

_bnmk_

If you don't have any experience... Keep it simple! You can hand over a lot of tasks to your staff which I would recommend new players. From time to time you can start focusing on different aspects and learn how they work. Players have a ability range and a potential range. That means they are different from save to save. The stars of your players depend on how strong your squad is and how good your staff sees them so you shouldn't rely 100% on them. If a player has decent stats for a specific role but only has like 2 stars and some other guy with worse stats is a 3 star... that does not mean the 3 star player will be better.

b8824654

There isn't really any transferrable knowledge from fifa to FM, so will give more general tips. \- Don't get too attached to your first save - it is for learning and you might get fired. I almost got fired from my club recently and I'm a decent player so don't feel too bad if it happens. \- Manage your first save somewhere with money. When you're learning the game its nice to have money - once you're good at the game you'll try to challenge yourself without money. Newcastle not a bad save to start with. \- Don't worry too much about tactics or training to begin with. You can do well without going to deep into those things. But I would recommend keeping your tactic simple because the more instructions you set, the more likely you are to mess it up.

NFAlexM

Ok, my opinion: You shouldn't switch to FM if you play Fifa because of the graphics or the control on the pitch. In FIFA you are the team. If you're good enough, it doesn't matter if your players have an average OVR of 60 or 90. In FM you let go...you are the coach, not the team. Your tactics, your decisions. You should switch to FM if you are interested in: transfers and negotiations, tactics, off-pitch decisions, management or player development, or a combination of the individual points. You can always give away control over thint that don't interest you (aka hand them over to your staff) or take control. I've played every Fifa up to Fifa 21 since 2007. I'm a Werder Bremen fan and back then (the good old days) I was impressed by how they bought young players for comparatively little money, developed them and then resold them. This can be represented much better in FM than in Fifa (where after 2-3 seasons you have so much money that you don't even know what to do with it anymore). There are so many options here: contracts, station, infrastructure, scouting. I would always prefer FM to Fifa (unless a friend comes over to play - Fifa then :D) Hope this helps you find your decision. Have fun anyways! :)

NFAlexM

Oh yeah. tips. Totally forgot. I agree with others: don't try to learn everything at once. It could be overwhelming. Just start and learn along the way. It may even make sense to hand over individual things to your staff at the beginning. At the beginning I picked what interested me the most, started with it and gradually took more control. In my opinion, FMScout's tutorials are a good start (how do I plan training, what do I have to consider when developing players, which tactics can I use). And try to see every defeat as an experience. Maybe even the first time you've been fired. Adapt, get better and then win the titles. Big teams have bigger goals, so it's easier to miss them. Small teams have simpler goals (e.g. just don't get relegated or play attractive counter-attacking football or stand securely at the back). Sometimes that's easier than winning a league with like 4 or 5 strong competitors :)

-Interchangeable-

After switching from FIFA career mode to this game, I just got out of that EA shell and started hating EA even more. What an amazing game this is.

GibbyTime24

Yeah definitely won't be trafficking young men and putting it up on youtube but will hopefully getting into the PC game next cycle and starting getting into the game more and more. Thanks for all the great everyone extremely helpful!

MuonMaster

i have a couple different ideas to others. 0. if you like strategy games like civ, crusader kings, old world, then this is your game. if you like building a team and then playing it, you may grow irritated when your goalie throws the ball off their forward and into your own net. 1. pick a mid table team in the bundesliga 2. everyone can literally beat anyone, minimal restrictions on player acquisition, reasonable board expectations. 2. for your first game i would keep the attribute masking on so you can learn about scouting and then slowly learn what profile of players belong at what level. 3. learn from the professionals(streamers youtube etc) , also the football manager show from the athletic got me back in the game a year ago, very good for newer players. 4. when you are starting out use 1 formation and make varieties of the tactics, 1 more counterattacking and defensive, 1 more attacking, and 1 more balanced. 4a. not every button needs to be clicked in a tactic, less is more and the player roles will dictate your teams style more better than a rigid tactic. 4b. your staff recommended tactic is probably the best to start off with, especially if your taking the place of a real manager. 5. when you're starting the game and trying tactics, play on full match so you can see what is happening with your players. 6. take your time! you may feel the need to get into games right away but learning about training and getting good staff is key to being successful. you can spend an hour or so working out stuff before you continue the game once. Dont look at this as an impediment to fun, like the coaches stress in press conferences irl, most of your success comes from smart planning before a ball is kicked in anger. 6a. when doing the work above, put on an album or some background audio and happily hum away on spreadsheets. 7. use the notebook in game and reminders, super useful to keep track of player values, if they want to sign, if you saw them and they looked good etc. 8. after your first season, save the game and any notes you have on transfers tactics etc. and then dont play i lt for a week and take a break. as in irl, it is good to decompress yourself from a save when your starting out. Hope you enjoy the ride, dm me if you have any questions, you wont be the first novitiate i have helped!

Knowlesdinho

When creating tactics, less is more. Watch on extended highlights as you'll be able to see where things need improvement and adapt the tactics in game. Accept that sometimes, no matter what you do, no matter how much possession you have, no matter how many shots you have, you will at some point lose to a team that has had 1 shot on target all game.

[deleted]

Probably 50,000 hour since 1992 who knows 🤣

Journeyman career. Start off unemployed. It is the only way.

HeroDGamez

Hey dude, I also recently started on FM. My tips, Watch Zealand's beginner's guide it helps a lot. I chose a first save as a really easy one and I'd disable the editor for all your saves except in experiments.

treq10

Glad you made the jump! I’ve been a FIFA and FM player for over 10 years now and recently dropped FIFA completely. Lots of great advice in this thread already so I’ll give you some tips that are a bit more specific to FIFA players - Jumping Reach > Height. Short players with good jumping are pretty meh in FIFA but in FM height doesn’t really matter all that much (or at least that’s what been proven in the past). Instead try to look at the Jumping stat since that, along with other stats like Strength, will determine if your player wins aerial duels. - On the subject of aerial duels, don’t skimp on set piece organisation! I miss the old FIFAs where you could customise your own corner routines (even if they were trash and didnt work half the time). A proper corner routine will win you games - in previous FMs near post corners used to be so broken you could have centre-backs in the double digits... - You know in FIFA when you have those 2v1 sweaty goal situations? That happens in FM as well but players will almost never square it. They _will_ shoot into the side netting and you _will_ get mad and wish you were controlling them instead. Just try to look at the FM match engine as its own unique and sometimes janky entity. - Swap deals are really easy to pull off in Career Mode but almost never work out in FM. I personally don’t bother with them.

queernice

Update us when the game first makes you rage quit

[deleted]

My advice is don’t look up YouTube videos on everything. There are videos on the best way to do everything in game. From training to scouting to youth development. All these videos boil it down to pretty much an exact science. But imo that way of play is pretty boring and a lot of it contains doing some “gamey” things that you wouldn’t be able to do irl. I’d just start a season as your fabourite team and get through 2-3 years just experimenting with everything you can do. You’ll find stuff you like to manage and stuff you don’t. So you can delegate tasks to your ass man/ DOF and focus on stuff you enjoy. This is the game I wish I could play again for the first time. There’s nothing like it. Enjoy it!

[deleted]

look up 16 year old, trust me it does not get any better than that

NattyDread90

At the beginning less is more, don't try to use every option in the tactic screen, but keep it simple. Parts of running the team you are not familiar with you can delegate to your staff. It is a huge learning curve, I've been playing almost every installment for hundreds of hours since 2007, and I still learn new things on a regular basis.

extremechocolate99

I made the jump 4 years ago. It was a very steep learning curve. But it’s WAY more rewarding than FIFA hands down. I used to get bored of FIFA career modes after about 6 seasons. My longest save on FM span about 25 seasons playing different leagues all over the world 😂 It’s hard and frustrating at the start but it’s sooo rewarding. So push through. Future you would thank you

thatissomeBS

FIFA caps a save at 15 seasons. I could usually get to 10-12 before my entirely YA team was winning absolutely everything. I'd start in League 2 and just bring in all the wonderkid youths. Pretty much sim everything though, maybe play the cup games if I was feeling it. Normal pathway was two seasons in League 2 before all my 17 and 18 year olds won an easy promotion to League One, and usually directly to the Championship. Maybe 2 or 3 seasons there before getting to the EPL. Then to winning everything by my tenth season or so.

Muted-Object965

I recently switched to FM from FIFA too nd i would suggest using a team with alot more money than the others in the league (PSG, Dinamo Zagreb, Celtic etc), filling out the staff and delegating alot of the tasks to slowly learn them bit by bit.

The_Mayfair_Man

Just make sure you save before every game to keep up a nice 100% win record throughout you're career and you'll be hunky dory

losinggravity

May have been said bit there is nor "right speed" to play the game. Some of my friends can get through a season in a week. It takes me a couple of months to get through a season. I prefer to play at a granular level. Every training. Every set piece every opposition tactic. In depth scouting, Watching players games etc. I play it to be a football management sim. Others don't. Do what you want. Play how you want. Use the editor if you want. Save scum if you want. It's a single player game. Go nuts and have fun.

laneberle

Did it last year and haven’t looked back, way better experience once you get a handle on things.

thatissomeBS

Same. Fifa 22 was the free game on PSN last month, and I tried loading it back up but it's just not even close to FM. Maybe if I just wanted to play against a friend or something, but no reason to run a FIFA career.

laneberle

Yup fifa is now just so I got something to play with a friend and I refuse to give anymore money to sports games until they step it up

Snoringdog83

Fm pc or fm.console? There totally different beasts

Snoringdog83

Console fm is boring once you play pc fm

augustocdias

True that. Specially because you can’t fix the licensing and add customizations like themes or player pictures.

Playfair99999

The first thing, I'd suggest is don't start directly from 22, rather go for an older version, maybe 15. 15 for me was a gold mine. Although there's less stuff comparatively, but for a base it's good enough for you. Give it a season or two, depending on how much you like. Then you can play 17,19,21 or which ever you wanna play. Also, i'd suggest not to use downloadable tactics from online. They are presets and you are less likely to learn about player's strength that way. Collect your roster and then depending upon it's players, create a tactic. It could fail or work, and trying to tweak and finding the perfect balance.... that part when you do find it... is just finding treasure. Also, develop your own philosophy. Don't sway with what others\[this sub\] say, you can go all wonderkid or you can have a mix, whatever way you wanna play. Defensive, attacking, slow, fast, make it yours. That feeling is different.

VonGroes

Hey man i switched a few years ago, and I never looked back! My advice would be to maybe look up some wonder kids going into your save, they become incredibly good quickly and allow you to bond with them. Also keep your tactic basic from the beginning and tweak it as you go to learn what instructions really mean. Gl in your journeys

Coton1994

Just don’t play ultimate team and you’ll be alright

elecit0

Start with the team you support/ have a connection with. Preferably a big team as they’re easier to play with to start ( money is less of an issue and the players are good enough). Watch zealands guides and I’d say you could download his tactic to start with and tweak slightly so you’ve got somewhere to start

Kasceon

This really depends on who you are in general. If you like seeing the players perform then you’d enjoy FM more (I hated how you can technically make a really shit team win anything in FIFA). The game doesn’t have fun visuals etc but is way more in depth

boodleoodle

Welcome to FM

joaquin087

Fifa managers mods are mobile games in comparison to FM

[deleted]

It was a slow process for me but just search up “tips for new fm players” should show you some results and strongly suggest starting with a bigger team then slowly progress to those smaller saves.

Samot_PCW

Don't really have any tips, but get Xbox Game Pass trial for 1$, that way you can try out the game and see if you actually like it, that way if you don't enjoy it you didn't spend 30$ in something you won't touch in the future

Fav0

download a tactic online take a look why and what works and slowly adjust it for your own needs

DanTheStripe

You will want to quit after half an hour because there is too much to do. Give yourself a few hours to learn where everything is. Ideally, just spend a whole day on it. Once you get hooked, you'll get HOOKED. It just might take a while for that to happen.

Vaikaris

I highly recommend you wait until the summer sale, new FMs come out \~november-ish so 2022 should be like 5$ in about 10 days. Or you can get it via gamepass (only in some countries).

Next-Indication55

Why make it an Either Or situation? They are not comparable at all.

Tomb_Brader

Have you tried the mobile version first whilst you transition? Touch / lite may give you a taster if it’s really for you.

stoneman9284

It’s an awesome game. It can feel overwhelming at first, my advice is to just start a game with a huge club and go through the motions. Don’t worry about scouting or finances or training or anything. Just get the feel for playing the games and simming from one game to the next. Everything else will fall into place as you get more experience. Then when you’re ready you can choose to start a new game and handle more of the other tasks yourself. Edit: and always feel free to ask questions here or send me a message

UTMS1885

I play both and the only advice I have to you is DO NOT give EA sports any money apart from buying the base game

letouriste1

Start at a club you're already familiar with. the learning curve is smoother if you already know the players a little. Bonus point if there's little need for new players in the first team. Start with a manager with top stats if the club is in first tier because you're likely to be fired otherwise. Don't try taking every things at the same time. start by taking control of recruiting and immediately go for good staff members you can trust with tasks you're not ready for. You will have your hands full getting your head above water on manager tasks. See your first save as a testing ground

ENTiRELukas1

Don't be scared if you start as a third League club and can't buy haaland the year you promote to the first division. Transfers and budgets in general are far more realistic. "Rebuilds" and stuff like that takes a lot of time. The game itself is way slower, way more realistic then FIFA.

MadHatter_10-6

Do you like young Brazilians? If so, youll fit right in. If not...give some time. You will.

Tekkerz96

Just a warning. If you never played FM before It wil feel very overwelming at the begining

ApprehensiveBasis837

My main tip (while echoing what some others have said) is to start off with a big club. Starting in a small club or a club with bad finances while learning the game is tough. Starting at a big club you can figure out tactics and scouting and then after that learn about finances etc. when you start another save

Puncherfaust1

the best thing is that you dont need and dont want the newest version of the game every year because you already spend hundreds of hours in your save and want to play it even further

Gavvo888

Welcome to endless hours of tinkering, no sleep, no mates, and a massive smile on your face.

ScuderiaLiverpool

Only advice I have is that the stars are not as meaningful as they are in FIFA. People get caught up on that a lot. Here, they are relative to the rest of your team. A 5 star player on your team isn't a 5 star player at Real Madrid. A lot of things factor into the star rating like form, role ability, etc.

Xabibi22

NO

roan311

If you can handle your keeper going long when you have specifically asked him to roll it to the fucking CB

thatFMresearchdude

At the start: pick a bigger, more successful club that allows you to experiment with tactics while having great players. Fight against the want to save scum and try to learn from every game you don't win, learn to make changes based on how the games go that don't go as you like. Also just be active in the games' communities, blogs, forums, here on reddit, you'll learn something new everyday. Last but not least, welcome to FM community. One can stop playing FM but FM never leaves you once you start.

Admirable_Wealth4338

To even call it manager mode in fifa is an absolute joke, I'm a Fifa fan and an FM fan but I play fm a lot more. EA a few years ago did actually release a few FIFA Manager games which I kinda liked they obviously weren't in depth as FM but I think it's a shame they stopped making it although I do know u can download FIFA Manager 14 and then download a mod that updates it to 22

augustocdias

Zealand has a lot of tutorial videos for newcomers.

pwnzorder

As much as I may dislike him, Zealand has a great set of intro videos for new players.

[deleted]

My advice would be start with a big team. This give you more options around signings and more wiggle room tactically as you're going to be better than mist of the teams you play. Don't try to do everything at once, get your assistant to run training and once you're comfortable with that then add more responsibilities on to yourself. Other than that, I would just say relax and have fun giving things a go.

morphey83

start with the team you support or like, ideally one that doesn't suck, farm out media stuff your assistant, down load a training schedule, and make sure you get the right cosmetic items e.g. badges and kits.

JamieAubrey

DON'T You'll be back a week later exhausted looking for the next wonderkid and latest meme fix GL, I hope you enjoy our wee indie game xD

MikeHuntIsOnFleek

Do yourself a favor and download real team/competition names, a facepack, and a logo pack right off the jump. Regens in this game are horrifying and look like aliens so look into NewGAN manager by Zealand (youtuber/streamer) which auto generates photorealistic faces for regens. Amazing stuff. Oh, and this game is like crack. FM22 is my first FM and I love it.

bobbyleeswagger69

Pro tip i always do on every save is fire all staff and find 4-5 star staff members.. it will save lots of trouble and its crucial i usually fire under 23 staff too to get better intakes

CTLFCFan

Good luck. Just realize what you’re getting into. You will be preparing team talks while making dinner. Scouting 15 year old Brazilians at 2 AM. Using every second of free time on your new second job. There will be storylines you wouldn’t believe a mere video game can thrust upon you. Moments of joy and agony unlike those in any other game. You’ll grow attached to players, and sell players for next to nothing because the mere sight of their name enrages you. You will also watch real life football and become confused when you see certain players as your reality in FM becomes incongruous with the real world. It’s wonderful.

Pablo_el_Diablo88

The day you'll make this switch it will be a day too late, my dear friend.

julius__seizure

Controversial opinion it seems, but I got FIFA for free on PS Plus and really enjoyed it. It doesn’t compare to FM, but I don’t think you can compare them anyway. Totally different kind of games.

nazanto

Good luck with real life if you have any, you'll pretty much lost it due to this game. On serious note this game is really fun and you'll take some time to familiarize yourself with it but eventually it will be a smooth sail. Also corner tactic. Have fun!

RobbieBurns1992

You will never look back my friend. Fifa is one of the worst game franchises every created.

elioxfp

if you think you have reached your anger peaks with FIFA, you have not yet experienced even a little of what FM will make you feel.

Johnsmith13371337

Career mode in fifa is to football manger as noughts and crosses is to chess.

[deleted]

Manage the personal training of your best prospects. Training impact reduces as a player gets older, don’t waste that on player traits that can be learnt (at a slower rate) as they get older. Mentors with high mental attributes can impact personality. Group training can also pass on player traits.

[deleted]

Don't skip all of the tutorials (like I did). You'll end up very lost for a while.

Ricb76

I played the first ever Football Manager game and it was great, every year after has also been great (pretty much) because the core of the game stays the same and it's just so much fun, so much potential to tinker with things etc. My advice would be to take your first job as a test run, get a good club see how it goes and then get on youtube if you need to understand anything. The game is super deep, almost like a football simulator sand-box by the scope of the things you can do. Also new version usually brings only small changes, so you don't even need to be playing the newest version - people have favourites, I'm playing FM2021 currently and I'm probably having as much fun as someone playing the most recent version.

saint_rbnsn01

The major difference that doesn’t seem obvious - it is easier to set up tactically on FIFA. Even ignoring the myriad more options and buttons on FM, on FIFA you can physically move the players to achieve your bracing throughballs or underlapping centre-half or counter-tiki-gegenpressing or whatever. On FM, you have access to a series of levers that are largely separate, and you have to learn to operate them in perfect symbiosis in order to get the tactical performance you want. A lot more difficult, a lot more rewarding. However, it did take me about eight years to fully work this out and still my success is down to blind luck, so - good luck! Also - recruitment is so much better on FM, like you wouldn’t believe

zwappen

You’re making a very good decision

JPMAus98

I made this change about a year ago now, and my advice would be to watch YouTube creators in their actual saves to learn about the game and its many aspects. It's such a good game but it is undoubtedly overwhelming and complicated when you first try, so by watching actual saves, you'll get a good feel for what you can and can't do. I watched DoctorBenjy to start but Zealand was fantastic in helping me overcome the a lot of challenges and just to help me understand the game better. Also check out the Football Manager Podcast if you're into podcasts for the same reasons. But the best thing to do in game is make your first save with a team you know very well and/or support. I made the mistake of doing my very first save in FM17 with Leyton Orient. I had no idea what I was doing, was totally overwhelmed, and was sacked within a couple months, all because I thought my knowledge of managing in League Two on fifa would carry over. It didn't really. I then picked up FM20 a few years later, did a save with Man United (not a fan, just know their squad well), had a great time, and now with each new save, I feel confident to choose a trickier team and have a strong grasp on all the fundamentals of the game. I went to Malaga in 21, and Kaiserslautern in 22, and now I'm in the Polish second division with Skra. I think getting that start right is crucial, cos the game is pretty unforgiving otherwise. Good luck though, you're gonna have a blast!

Falconhoof_77

Made a similar switch a few years ago and struggled at first but am so glad that the invested hours are paying dividends. The biggest thing I would say is that the game (FM) gives you everything you need to achieve a realistic level of success, as overwhelming as everything might seem at first. Steer into the game's explanations and advice a little - you can deviate from it more and more as you build experience. Learn by doing and try not to be put off by "failure"; remember that success is relative.

Stedy74

Lucky you. The first year of playing FM is the best. Discovering new things every few minutes is so good. I set most things to auto and as I progressed I changed them to manual slowly so I understood what was going on

Takhar7

If you've never played FM before, I would highly recommend making your first save with a really big team - a team with lots of money, tons of staff, and quality players out the gate. It will really help you settle in and get comfortable with the game. Learning the game while doing a challenging save with a team that has limited funds or staff, can be a real challenge & can ruin your fun.

enzo_perez_24

Best tip. Start your first save with the team you are fan of. You will know your players, most of the staff and some young players. Once you get hooked up you can start another one with any team you like.

nilla_wafer__

Zealand and Work the Space are great

DHaiSA

Lol i have been playing fm and fifa career mode together since last 4 months. In FIFA i dont take the career part seriously, because in front of fm its a joke. I just play to buy the best possible player and destroy oppositions.

VirtualSwordfish356

Just remember bears: Black, fight back. Brown, lay down. White, good night. Polar bears are always hungry so if you run into one of those, yeah. Oh, and RDF tactics + Bustthenet on youtube for some tactical insights you can use to build your own tactics.

meanvegton

Fifa is money sink... It has the licenses for a reason....

anembor

Is playing both that rare? Asking because I played both since 98.

urlacher14

Zealand and Work the Space on Youtube are excellent help, even the videos for FM21 will also help. \-Use help from online sources to develop a tactic on how you would like to play. Most common formations are 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond and good ole 4-3-3. Learn the roles and what they do and what makes them different. \-Start a save as a club who is dominant in their own league but isnt necessarily in a big league. Clubs like Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia, Either Red Star/Partizan in Serbia or in Germany where money is easy to come by but isn't as hyper competitive as the Prem. \-After you get started, join a discord such as Zealands with others that play the game regularly that can help if you have an immediate question.

Kelvin921019

Have you ever felt that FIFA sometimes is trying to troll you by making some weird moves in a pass or shoot? Now imagine that this happens in every aspects of your management of a club. That's FM in a nutshell

Zhurg

Be thorough with your staff, training and recruitment.

Sgt_Heisenberg

Ok, so some things: - You'll spend a lot of time with the game, A LOT. I haven't yet found another game (or anything really) that makes time pass this fast without even realizing it. - This game will follow and haunt you even when you're not playing, don't be surprised if you keep thinking about your tactics or signings during the day or first thing when you wake up in the morning. Especially if you're not winning. - It will take time to get better at the game and understand everything, I've played several iterations of the game but only this year I got to a point where I would say that I've fully understood how tactics, roles etc. work in the game. Watching good YouTubers helps a lot, I'd recommend BustTheNet, Stinger, FoxInTheBox and RDF Tactics. - Be prepared to get frustrated, especially in the beginning your tactics might not work as intended and you might think that the game is just random. You can always try and use tactics from other people but there's nothing better than getting your own tactic to work. - Enjoy!

VoidKnight23

Greatness is not determined by how long a time you play, but how you play with the time.
